WORDS FROM THE
PRESIDENT
EDITOR’S NOTES
Angelika Ehlers
Isabel Weeks-Lambert
Summer finally arrived in Victoria and not a day too soon.
The sunshine and warm days have been very enjoyable.
It has even been warm enough to take the top down on
Ken’s XJS convertible.
For this month’s contributions many thanks go to
 Lois Smith for the interview with the author Bennie
 Alan Heartfield and John Wellman for telling us about
their special XJS Jags
 Dick Auchinleck for the report on the prowl
 Bennie Chisholm for the writeup on the Cowichan
Lake to Port Renfrew run
 John Fitzgeorge-Parker for the report on the Pacific
Jaguar Enthusiasts meet
 Wayne Watkins for his Coffee Klatch story
 John Gordon for the Auction Report
Our club had a very strong presence again this year at
the annual Fathers Day Picnic in Beacon Hill Park. This
was the official ninth birthday of our club, and there were
three “founding fathers” present to cut the
commemorative cake.
Of course now that it is July, our thoughts turn to the biggest event on our club’s calendar: Jaguars on the Island.
I hope you have all registered to put at least one Jaguar
on the field at Windsor Park. I also hope you have registered for the Friday reception, the Saturday banquet and
the Sunday lunch. These gatherings are always enjoyable as we greet old friends and meet new people who
share our passion for the most beautiful and exciting
marque: Jaguar.
And as always thanks for the ongoing efforts of the
editor’s helpers: Lois Smith, John Fitzgeorge-Parker,
Malcolm Baster and Jim Provan.

On a personal note, I have some exciting plans on my
horizon. After consultation with two of the founding
fathers, I came to the conclusion that it was time to sell
my XJ40 (1993 XJ6 VDP) and buy an S- Type. I found
one in Los Angeles and with the help of friends who live
there, I have purchased it. I am waiting until after JOTI,
but I plan to fly to Los Angeles and drive it up the scenic
coastal route. Julie Bailey has graciously agreed to be
my travel buddy. There seems to be a move afoot for
some club members to drive to southern Oregon to meet
us and return to Victoria in convoy. Would any of you like
to take a few days and join us? We would be travelling
the week of August 20th.

I look forward to seeing all of you at Jaguars on the
Island. This year’s event promises to be the
best yet. In the meantime, I wish you happy
motoring.
1992 Jaguar XJS Coupe
We purchased this beautiful car locally in August of
2003. We are the third owners. It was originally sold by
MCL Motor Cars (1992) in Vancouver. There were
approximately 124,000km on the car then. It had minor
scratches in the paint, but no damage to the car. A
complete repaint was done to bring the car to Concours
standards. It has scored first and second place in the
eight shows that we have entered.
This two door coupe has a 6 cylinder 4.0 litre AJ6 engine
with a 5 speed manual transmission. This is a rare car in
North America and because of this, it qualified for the
collector plates. The exterior paint is Oyster and the
interior is Doeskin.
It is a great car to drive and it rides smoothly. We have
been to Oregon, Washington and all over BC and back
with no problems at all. It was the first Jaguar we have
owned and is still our favourite.

MEET THE AUTHOR: Bennie Chisholm
By Lois Smith.
“STAINED SAND is a classic murder mystery with the
usual suspects, plus the one nobody should expect.
Walking on a beach in Hawaii, Philomela Nightingale
discovers the body of a woman she recognizes. It drags
her and her husband Brent to the fringe of drugs and
prostitution, almost ruining their holiday. To find the
perpetrator, Philomela eavesdrops and observes and in
the process becomes a suspect herself. She is
occasionally stymied, but her desire to see justice done
enables her to help Detective Kanui solve not one but two
disturbing murders.”
She is at work now on another Philomela Nightingale novel. She has a basic idea of what she wants but doesn’t try
to plot exactly. It’s not all murder and mayhem - she does
ensure that there’s humour too and Growler readers are
familiar with her deft touch. “It’s true what they say – that
the characters take over,” she says, adding that the characters in Stained Sand changed drastically over the
course of writing it. The process of publication was an eye
-opener. “It took about 14 months,” she says, noting that
she revised to incorporate suggestions from two Friesen
Press editors as well as her oldest daughter.
So Friesen Press summarizes Bennie
Chisholm’s first published novel, which
went on sale in May. “It’s not the first
novel I’ve written,” Bennie says. “It’s
actually my third, but it’s the first one to
be published.”
Bennie tries to spend some time writing every day,
although with her busy life, she does not always succeed.
While she does not in general like to discuss work in
progress, she does say that she may well revisit one or
more of her first three novels in the future. In the meantime, you can check out Stained Sand, which is available
in hard cover and paperback at Friesen Press.com
(e-books), Amazon.ca (e-books), Chapters.ca as well as
locally at Ivy’s Bookstore in Oak Bay.
Growing up in small-town Saskatchewan as the “baby” in a family with an
older brother and three older sisters,
Bennie was always an avid reader but
had no ambition to be an author. Instead, she fixed her
sights on nursing, enrolling in the five-year degree program at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. This included three years at the university hospital, and it was
during her years on the wards that Bennie began to write.
“I saw a lot of terrible things,” she says, “and so I began to
write poetry, probably as stress relief.” However, she
found she enjoyed the exercise of writing and, as time
went by, her verses became less dark and more humourous.
A NOTE ABOUT NAMES:
One of the cardinal rules of proofreading is that names
should be spelled the same throughout a document. So
when you see “Bennie” and “Benni,” one of them has to
be wrong. Well – there are exceptions to every rule!
Named for Prime Minister R.B. Bennett (“It was a prairie
joke that got away on my parents,” Bennie says.), Bennie
has always shortened her name. But when she began
submitting articles, she was taken to task by editors who
thought it inappropriate that a man named Bennie would
express feminist views. So Bennie began publishing as
“Benni” and either version is correct.
In her degree year, Bennie had to choose either teaching
or public health, and didn’t think she’d enjoy teaching.
Ironically, she went on to become Health Director at Holy
Cross Hospital in Calgary, which included teaching several classes a week. “I found I really enjoyed it after all,” she
laughs. Also at university, she met a young man wearing
a tartan jacket and playing a saxophone. “He really
caught my eye,” she says, and you know who he was!
Merritt and Bennie eventually settled in Calgary where
she became a full-time mom to their two daughters and
two sons. With a young family, it wasn’t always easy carving out time to write, but Bennie persisted. She submitted
a story to a contest and was short-listed as a finalist. “I
didn’t even realize what a coup that was,” she admits.
She submitted another story to the radio program CBC
Alberta Anthology and it was read over the air, which she
found very encouraging. The same story was subsequently published in the magazine BC Women. Over the
years, Bennie’s articles appeared in a variety of publications, including Westworld, and she also became editor of
the Clan Chisholm national newsletter. Always interested
in science fiction, Bennie enrolled at the Banff School of
Fine Arts to study under noted Canadian sci-fi writer,
Robert Sawyer. “But everything I wrote turned out to be a
mystery,” she says.

The XJS TWR Version
By Alan Heartfield. Photos by Alan Heartfield.
Besides Tom's successes, an XJS held the Cannonball
Run record for four years until a Ferrari beat it by a few
minutes. NY to LA in under 33 hours. Grace, Pace and
Space.
I have raced the car at Gimli myself, and it achieved FTD
at a slalom run that ended with a 1/4 mile dash at an airport near Minneapolis a few years ago with a top speed of
121 mph.
In the 70s and 80s Tom Walkinshaw raced modified XJS
Jaguars in Europe and Australia. In 1985 he won the European Championship. He then went on to a
successful Formula 1 career as Engineering Director for
Michael Schumacher and owner of Arrows. If you've been
to the JDHT museum you've seen Tom's XJS. My 1985
Jaguar XJS was modified when new in Tom's racing shop
to have many of the performance and safety features of
his racing cars. It has the ground effects kit, suspension
mods, upgraded brakes, engine mods, stiffer springs and
had modified shocks when I bought it 13 years ago, but I
had to replace them. It retains the excellent comfort and
wonderful ride that Jaguars are legendary for. And it is
and has been a very reliable car. It handles like a race
car, but you can drive it across country for 12 hours
straight and not have a single ache.
The XJS V12 Convertible
By John Wellman. Photos by John Wellman.
This 1989 XJS V12 convertible was purchased from the
dealer in September 1988, the first year the true convertibles were available from Jaguar and not the cabriolet or
the Hess and Eisenhart rebuild.
The car had as many extras installed as were offered at
the time, including chromed magnesium alloy wheels, the
entire stainless package, wooden steering wheel and
knob, etc.
Being a genuine Tom Walkinshaw Racing XJS (not just a
body kit) it has engine, brake, transmission and suspension mods, including 4 pot AP racing calipers, vented rear
discs, TWR intake components, TWR springs,
TWR/Speedline oversize wheels. Engine mods allow the
car to exceed 150mph. More than this I can not attest to,
since I ran out of nerve at that speed. Transmission mods
allow the engine to rev higher. The engine will break
loose even the oversized tires. It also has TWR steering
wheel, and the car is lowered compared to a stock XJS.
I have made a few mods of my own. The main fan has
been replaced with an electric unit, and there is a new
auxiliary pancake fan. This gives much better access to
the front of the engine. Cooling system filters are installed. The A/C has been retrofitted to R134. I removed
the IRS and rebuilt it 10 years ago. The car has a six disc
Kenwood CD player in the trunk which is coupled to the
original Jaguar FM/cassette unit. I have owned this car
longer than any other car in my life, and it is not only by
far the most exciting car I ever drove (including my Formula Vee), but it has also been the most reliable over the
years. I have driven it everywhere from Pittsburg to Flin
Flon, from Kingston to Victoria. And it has been a much
better crumpet magnet than my E-type ever was. Not that
that is a factor in my ownership of the car.
Since new, one set of brakes and calipers, belt replacement, and two fifteen dollar bushings on a front shock
absorber were the only repairs.
Current millage is 19,000, and we still enjoy the summer
rides. My only questions have always been “is it a XJS or
an XJ-S?” as the latter is rear insignia plate; and is it a
5.3L or 6L?"
New, this was a $140,000 car - in 1985!

Pacific Jaguar Enthusiasts Group 44 Concours d’Elegance & Slalom
June 1, 2012 – June 3, 2012
By John Fitzgeorge-Parker. Photos by Janie Jolley, Edmund Dickenson and John Fitzgeorge-Parker.
Once again the Best Western Ramada Inn at Pitt
Meadows provided comfortable accommodation for
out-of-town participants. The restaurant and banquet
facilities were closed so the Dickenson family made other
arrangements. Dinner was held Friday night at
neighbourhood Swiss Family Restaurant. Folks from
California, Nevada, Washington, Alberta & B.C. gathered
in anticipation of Saturday's Concours and to swap stories
about their Jags. The Concours coincides with the Pitt
Meadows Days Fair so some of our cars were included in
the parade leading up to the opening. All were in their
allotted place by 10am. The fairgrounds were bustling
with activity. Kiosks were opened featuring homemade
items, clothing, jewelry, jams, pictures and offering games
such as a horseshoe pitch. The stage featured bands and
entertainment. Later Mounties appeared in dress
uniforms and joined some of the Jag contestants to issue
mock parking violations! Judging the Jags must have
been difficult. The standard of preparation and attention to
detail was of a high order. Tom & Wanda Doyle,
members of the CXKJR, not only received first in class
(D01) for their beautifully prepared 1959 XK150 but were
awarded the Mayor's Cup. Some perfect scores were given. C15A Michael Hancock 1990 XJS coupe 100.000 D06
Roy & Peggy Gill 1989 Series 3 V12 10.000, S03 Jim &
Darlene Bateman 1956 XK140 10.000 Other scores included, C06 Julie Bailey first with her 1970 E-Type
99.590. The Manchesters followed Jim Bateman in
second place with 9.958. The 1962 Mark 2 is stunning.
Carole Borgens 1989 XJS convertible followed Mike
Hancock's with 99.900. What a lovely Jag set off well with
a B.C. license plate “PRRRRS”. A fabulous show of Jags.
Richmond Auto Mall displayed a beautiful XF and an
XKR. The crowd gathered when the latter was fired up.
Time to move on to the banquet held in a new facility at
the Meadows Gardens Golf Club. The fare was excellent
and to top it off included two glasses of wine! Most of the
concours pictures were taken by Edmund Dickenson. The
slalom pictures by Julie's sister. The Sunday slalom
enjoyed reasonable weather and a good time was
enjoyed by all. Most of the participants were members of
the Pacific Jaguar Enthusiasts Group. Julie (JCCV) joined
the fun and scored a respectable 46.707 to place first in
class D. Sometime member, Malcolm Reith placed first in
SPL 1 with 43.825. He drives a modified 1962 E-Type. Art
took a great picture of Charlie Manchester rounding the
chicanes at the slalom. Art sums up the weekend
best. What a super weekend it had been, sunshine for the
Concours, a new banquet facility at Meadows Gardens
Golf course, a Canadian event attracting from far away
Carolyn and Charlie Manchester (drove from Palm
Springs) and Sue and Paul Petach from California. Great
people, great cars, all of us I guess living our own
personal dreams this weekend here in Pitt Meadows,
British Columbia.

CONCOURS d' ELEGANCE
The main feature event of "Jaguars On The Island" (JOTI) is the Concours d' Elegance held at
Windsor Park, Oak Bay - the largest such event in North America
sanctioned by the Jaguar Car Club of North America (JCNA).
Under the rules of JCNA , vehicles are judged in either the 'Champion' or 'Driven' Divisions. In the
latter, the engine compartment and boot (trunk) of the cars are not judged and rules regarding
authenticity are not quite as strict as they are for the 'Champion Division'.
JOTI has an additional class, the 'Enthusiast Division', in which the vehicles are not judged but are
eligible for popular choice awards determined by votes cast by those participating in the meet.

Cowichan Lake to Port Renfrew
Run
By Benni Chisholm.
Photos by Merritt Chisholm and Marke Simmons.
Carol Bird and Marke Simmons did it again. They
organized a super impromptu run.
Barbara Wade and Jeremy Why, Dorothy Moleski and
Terry Sturgeon, John Robinson and Bill Laurie, Julie
Bailey and her sister Susan, Sherry Lemay and Nigel
Oddy, and Benni and Merritt Chisholm met at the Shell
Service Station on Spencer Road. Everyone admired
John’s newly
purchased radiant red XKR and pictures were taken. With
top down, Lois and Phil Smith joined the group on the
Malahat.
After turning onto Highway 18, the cars cruised with ease
into the hills. Clouds gathered and a Scottish mist descended, but not damply enough to deter Marke, Nigel,
and Phil from driving topless. On the other side of Cowichan Lake the road was still paved and all the bridges
were one lane. Terry led the group around corners at
speeds that only Dorothy’s white knuckles comprehend.
Jeremy and Merritt experienced a few seconds of terror
when an on-coming driver aimed his truck at their cars.
Two collisions were missed by inches. The truck driver
must have been drug-crazed, smart-assed, or
suicidal.
The mostly fun run was climaxed by a delicious lunch at
the Port Renfrew Hotel. Barbara said her half crab was
the best she’s ever eaten. John’s calamari was to die for,
and the fish chowder and chunky tomato soup eaters
joined the clean bowl club. There were no complaints
about the fish and chips or hamburgers. Needless to say
the
camaraderie
was
great.
Thanks Carol
and Marke.

TURKEY HEAD COFFEE
KLATCH - June 10th
By Wayne Watkins. Photos by Marke Simmons.
AN UNSCHEDULED COFFEE KLATCH
My plans for Sunday, June 10th were shaping up. There
were wheels to be cleaned of brake dust, rebuilding workbench to make room for the XK, cutting the grass and
much more in the way of that continuous list of chores.
What’s this – an Unscheduled Coffee Klatch! Technically
it was a free day and Lou did not have a golf game
scheduled. Good, it was to be a nice day with time for a
Jaguar run. Total count at Turkey Head was 19 JCCV
members and 11 Jaguars with one non-Jaguar. (In the
shop for minor work.) As some gravitated to the Oak Bay
Marina Coffee House discussion ensued about all things
Jaguar as well as recent exploits. Ruth and John spoke of
their trip to France. What, no Citroen T-shirt? Back out to
the Jaguar car show on the parking lot and lots of chatting
with passers-by about our cars. Then a large group of
photographers gathered – must have been a photography
club. Tripods were set up and large cameras with big
lenses emerged. Wow, maybe we should all face the
cameras and smile beside our Jaguars. Wait a minute –
the cameras are all facing Port Angeles and the sailboats!
No point in offering to smile and pose – there are lots of
people who think that Jaguars are like any other car – an
appliance! Back to our Jaguars and there was lots of discussion about our upcoming Jaguars On The Island
weekend in July (don’t miss it) and all the work to be done
to make our cars look most presentable. Then discussion
turned to items on our cars that previous JOTI judges
marked down. As we were debating the acceptance of a
certain steering wheel the owner asked “Are any of you
going to be judging?” A couple of us went silent and the
conversation immediately turned to paint colours. Then by
noon we all headed out – still time to clean wheels and do
some weeding. “A good time was had by all.”
JAGUAR COWICHAN PROWL
Sunday August 26th
In August we will prowl the back roads and byways of the
Cowichan Valley. Departures will commence from the
south end of the Valleyview Mall’s parking lot at 1:00 PM.
Instructions will be issued which will allow you to follow
easily a scenic route around the valley. Along with these
instructions will be a number of multiple-choice questions
to be answered. Some of these will concern things you will
see as you progress along the route, and others will concern automotive, mostly Jaguar, trivia. The run will end at
our acreage near Cobble Hill, where we will enjoy some
refreshments and mark our answer sheets. Small prizes
will be awarded to the winners.
We will plan to meet in the south end parking lot of the
Valleyview Mall at 12:45 PM on Sunday, August 26. The
Mall is near midway between Mill Bay and Duncan, on the
northeast corner of the intersection of the Trans
Canada Highway and Cowichan Bay Road. Please bring a
pen and clipboard, and lawn chairs. As we need to know
how many instruction sheets to print and how much refreshment we will need, please let us know before
August 22 if we may expect the pleasure of your
company. Phone 250 743-1791 or e-mail
[email protected]
Please also phone or e-mail if you need further
information.

Garage Tour and Barbeque
About 35 club members gathered at Dick and Linda

on display in the "boathouse" workshop and the upper

games room and relax in the home theatre to watch a
slide show of various Victoria Jaguar Club events. At
