prior to the time of the ceremony. If the honoree has not
received the Sacrament of Communion, she/he should be
enrolled to prepare to receive the sacrament before the Quince
Años ceremony. The candidate must attend and complete preparation sessions with the coordinator and must join

Dear Friends in St. Dominic.
The 2nd Sunday of Easter is also known as Divine mercy Sunday. Devotion to the Divine Mercy was
requested by our Lord Himself through St. Maria Faustina Kowalska; the Feast of Mercy holds first place.
The Lord's will with regard to its establishment was already made known in His first revelation to the saint,
as recorded in her Diary. In all, there were 14 revelations concerning the desired feast. Our Lord's explicit
desire is that this feast be celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. This Sunday is designated in the Liturgy
of the Hours and the Celebration of the Eucharist as the Octave Day of Easter. It was officially called
the Second Sunday of Easter after the liturgical reform of Vatican II. Now, by the Decree of the Congregation
for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, the name of this liturgical day has been changed to:
Second Sunday of Easter, or Divine Mercy Sunday.
The Image of The Divine Mercy represents the Risen Christ bringing mercy to the world (see Diary 49, 88,
299, 341, 570, 742). Pope John Paul II said: Jesus shows His hands and His side [to the Apostles]. He points,
that is, to the wounds of the Passion, especially the wound in His Heart, the source from which flows the
great wave of mercy poured out on humanity. From that Heart, we will see two rays of light shining from
that Heart and illuminating the world: The two rays, Jesus Himself explained to Sr. Faustina one day,
represent blood and water (Diary, 299). Blood and water! We immediately think of the testimony given by
the Evangelist John, who, when a soldier on Calvary pierced Christ's side with his spear, sees blood and water
flowing from it (see Jn 19:34). Moreover, if the blood recalls the sacrifice of the cross and the gift of the
Eucharist, the water, in Johannine symbolism, represents not only Baptism but also the gift of the Holy
Spirit" (see Jn 3:5; 4:14; 7:37-39).
This week-end’s gospel tells us that mercy comes through Christ’s wounds. The gospel seems to have a
strange focus today. We are in the Easter Season, and joy is everywhere. Spring is in the air. The days are
getting longer. Christ is Risen! So why does St John keep emphasizing Christ’s wounds in the gospel we
just heard? As soon as Jesus walks into the room where the disciples were, he shows them his hands and
his side. He shows them the wounds of his crucifixion. Thomas is not there. He returns later, and the others
excitedly tell him ---We have seen the Lord! But he replies: I won’t believe it until I see and touch the
wounds. He does see and touch the wounds, and that leads him to exclaim --My Lord and my God!
John wants to remind us that God so loved the world that he gave us his only son. Jesus died for you and for
me. Jesus has saved us. And his wounds are his identity card. They shout out to us that God’s mercy is more
powerful than death. All this is tied in with the special feast we are celebrating this week-end--- on Divine
Mercy Sunday. Mercy is when God’s love meets our brokenness. We all need God’s mercy. And we all need
to see God’s mercy. As Pope Francis, paraphrasing Pope Benedict XVI, once said, -The name of God is mercy. And the wounds of Christ, visible for all eternity, are the
vivid reminder of God’s mercy. It is not enough to know abstractly that the name of
God is mercy. We need to see it. We need to be reminded of it. So we can say that the
mercy of God comes to us through Christ’s wounds.

Queridos Amigos en San Dominic,
El segundo domingo de Pascua es también conocido como domingo de Divina Misericordia. La devoción a la Divina
Misericordia fue solicitada por el mismo Señor a través de Santa María Faustina Kowalska; la Fiesta de la Misericordia
ocupa el primer lugar. Ya se hizo la voluntad del Señor con respecto a su establecimiento conocido en su primera
revelación al santo, según consta en su diario. En total, hubo 14 revelaciones sobre la fiesta deseada. deseo explícito
de nuestro Señor es que esta fiesta se celebra el primer domingo después de Pascua. Este domingo se designa en la
Liturgia de las Horas y la celebración de la Eucaristía como el Día Octava de Pascua. Se llama oficialmente el Segundo
Domingo de Pascua después de la reforma litúrgica del Vaticano II. Ahora, por el Decreto de la Congregación para el
Culto Divino y la Disciplina de los Sacramentos, el nombre de este día litúrgico se ha cambiado a: Segundo Domingo
de Pascua o Domingo de la Divina Misericordia.
La imagen de la Divina Misericordia representa el Cristo Resucitado trayendo merced al mundo (ver Diario 49, 88, 299,
341, 570, 742). El Papa Juan Pablo II dijo: Jesús muestra sus manos y su cara [a los apóstoles]. Señala, es decir, a las
heridas de la pasión, sobre todo la herida en su corazón, la fuente de donde brota una gran ola de piedad que se derrama
sobre la humanidad. De ese corazón, veremos dos rayos de luz que brilla en ese corazón e iluminando el mundo: Los
dos rayos, Jesús mismo explicó a Hna. Faustina un día, representara la sangre y agua (Diario, 299). La sangre y el agua!
inmediatamente pensamos en el testimonio dado por el evangelista Juan, que, cuando un soldado en el Calvario
traspasado el costado de Cristo con su lanza, ve sangre y el agua que fluye de ella (ver Jn 19:34). Por otra parte, si la
sangre recuerda el sacrificio de la cruz y el don de la Eucaristía, el agua, es el simbolismo de Juan, representa no sólo
el bautismo, sino también el don del Espíritu "(Jn 3: 5; 4:14; 7: 37-39).
Este Evangelio del fin de semana nos dice que la misericordia llega a través de las heridas de Cristo. El Evangelio
parece tener un enfoque extraño hoy en día. Estamos en el tiempo de Pascua, y la alegría está en todas partes. La
primavera está en el aire. Los días son más largos. ¡Cristo ha resucitado! Entonces, ¿por qué sigue haciendo hincapié
en San Juan las heridas de Cristo en el Evangelio nos ¿Recién escuchado? Tan pronto como Jesús entra en la habitación
donde estaban los discípulos, les muestra sus manos y su lado. Él les muestra las heridas de su crucifixión. Thomas no
está allí. Se vuelve más tarde, y los demás le dicen con entusiasmo --- Hemos visto al Señor! Pero él responde: No lo
creeré hasta que lo vea y toque las heridas. El ve y toca las heridas, y que le lleva a exclamar --Mi Señor y mi Dios!
Juan quiere recordarnos que Dios amó tanto al mundo que nos dio a su único hijo. Jesús murió por ti y por mí. Jesús
nos ha salvado. Y sus heridas son su tarjeta de identidad. Gritan a nosotros que la misericordia de Dios es más fuerte
que la muerte. Todo esto está vinculado con la fiesta especial que estamos celebrando este fin de semana --- el
Domingo de la Divina Misericordia. La Divina misericordia es cuando el amor de Dios se encuentra con nuestro
quebrantamiento. Todos necesitamos la misericordia de Dios. Y todos tenemos que ver la misericordia de Dios. Como
Francisco, parafraseando el Papa Benedicto XVI, dijo una vez: --El nombre de Dios es
misericordia. Y las heridas de Cristo, visibles por toda la eternidad, son el
recordatorio vivo de la misericordia de Dios. No es suficiente saber en abstracto que
el nombre de Dios es misericordia. Tenemos que verlo. Necesitamos que se nos
recuerde de ella. Así que podemos decir que la misericordia de Dios viene a nosotros
A través de las heridas de Cristo.

UNIRSE A LA COMUNIDAD DE CREYENTES
JOINING THE COMPANY OF BELIEVERS
W
hat will help you to believe? Today’s scripture
readings tell of faith and doubt. They offer stories
“recorded to help you believe,” as the passage from
John’s Gospel (20:31) remarks today. There is an
urgency about this. On this Second Sunday of Easter
we are challenged to join the company of believers—
countless men and women who witnessed the power
of the apostles’ faith.
There is no doubt that this power comes from Jesus
Christ. The second reading, from the book of Revelation,
reports John’s mystical vision of the Son of Man, who
proclaims, “Once I was dead, but now I live” (Revelation
1:18). The Gospel gathers everyone but Thomas to see
the Risen Jesus and receive the Holy Spirit from him.
Like Thomas, we who have come along later must have
faith so that we can have life.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
We return to our reflections on the rites of marriage with a brief
consideration of reforms from the Council of Trent. When the
Protestant Reformation took hold, the fairly recent achievements
of the Church in regard to the sacrament of marriage were
reviewed with a critical, reforming eye. In general, Protestants
returned to an earlier view that marriage was a civil matter,
although some said that the civil society had to be in harmony
with Christian teaching. In the Catholic Church, the Council of
Trent took the question up in 1563, and decided to shore up its
teaching on the sacramentality of marriage. They identified
many threats to this, including secret marriages and easy
divorce. So they enacted laws that still govern our practice
today: to be valid, marriage consent must be exchanged in the
presence of a priest and two witnesses. Ever since Trent,
marriages must also be announced three weeks in advance to
the community, and recorded in a register. In some places in
the world, the “banns” are still posted in the public square. In
the United States, parishes sometimes publish the “banns” in the
bulletin.
Anyone who has ever watched a soap opera has seen the
standard scene of a minister announcing gravely, “If there
is anyone here present who sees any reason why these two
should not be married . . .” This bit of drama has no place in
the Catholic liturgy, but survives among Protestants who
broke with us before Trent edited this cliff-hanger out of
our public prayer.
¿Qué te ayudará a tener fe? Las lecturas bíblicas de
hoy hablan de la fe y de la duda. Se “escribieron…
para que ustedes crean”, como nos dice hoy el pasaje
del Evangelio de san Juan (20:31). Tiene esto una cierta
urgencia. En este Segundo Domingo de Pascua se nos
lanza un desafío a unirnos a la comunidad de creyentes –
un sinnúmero de hombres y mujeres que dan testimonio
del poder de la fe de los Apóstoles.
No hay duda que este poder viene de Jesucristo. La
segunda lectura, del libro del Apocalipsis, relata la
visión mística de Juan sobre el Hijo del Hombre, el
cual proclama: “Estuve muerto y de nuevo soy el que
vive” (Apocalipsis 1:18). El Evangelio reúne a todos
excepto a Tomás para ver a Jesús resucitado y recibir
de él el Espíritu Santo. Al igual que Tomás, los que
hemos llegado más tarde debemos tener fe para poder
tener vida.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
a Iglesia católica es universal, extendida en diversas
naciones y culturas. A través de los siglos estas
culturas han enriquecido la Tradición de la Iglesia con
muchas tradiciones y devociones que van más allá de su
cultura de origen. La fiesta de la Divina Misericordia es
un buen ejemplo. Viene de una devoción que nació en
Polonia con la Hermana Faustina Kowalska (1905-1938)
canonizada en el 2000.
La devoción a la Divina Misericordia se celebra el
Segundo Domingo de Pascua y durante todo el año

latinoamérica se ha ido extendiendo esta devoción
desde 1978 cuando fue aprobada por el Papa Paulo VI.
En todas partes se puede encontrar la imagen de la
Divina Misericordia, Jesús de pie con rayos rojos y
blanco-azules que brillan desde su corazón hacia el
mundo. Lleva el lema: Jesús, confío en ti.
La finalidad de esta devoción es recordar al pecador que
la misericordia de Dios es infinita e inagotable. Es una
misericordia que debemos imitar para que la paz
pueda reinar en nuestros corazones y en nuestra tierra.
