Italian Language School in Palermo
About us
Italian language and Culture teaching has been well-established both in Italy
and abroad for a long time. Foreign students and immigrants from all over the world
are attracted by the richness and variety of the Italian language and cultural
traditions and the opportunities that our country offers.
The need for employment and integration or the mere pleasure of learning
Italian and studying our culture in depth lead people of different origin to attend an
Italian course or have a holiday in our country.
I.L.S., Italian Language School in Palermo, results from this awareness and
the will to promote and spread the linguistic and cultural heritage of Italy and Sicily .
The school specialises in the organisation of Italian courses and services for foreign
students who live in Sicily or come here on holiday.
I.L.S. is part of Tredun S.r.l., a
leader in the education, training and
management of human resources,
specialising in the organisation and
supply of language and IT courses
through the following trademarks:
Istituto Dante Alighieri, British Institutes, Instituto Velázquez, Istituto Gamma.
I.L.S. arranges Italian exams and awards the relevant certificates through the
Istituto Dante Alighieri trademark, of which our school is the exclusive
licensee in Palermo.
Istituto Dante Alighieri, founded in Milan in 1923, has been one of the first
schools to promote the spread of the Italian language and culture and is widespread
all over Italy.
It is authorised by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (see Decreto Dir. n.
174/02 – n. 5.305/02 – L.R. 28/96 ), accredited by the Italian Ministry of Labour (see D.M. n. 166/01
– R.L. Decreto n. 14305/02 – Operatore n. 2011.912 ) and awards certificates valid for admission into
schools and universities and for public administration purposes.
The School
I.L.S. is located in the ancient Ravetto Palace in Palermo, a building of refined
beauty a short distance from the historic centre and the main tourist attractions in
town: theatres, ancient buildings, churches, museums, cinemas, night places and
shopping areas.
The school is furnished with comfortable and well-equipped classrooms and space
for social activities and relaxation. We have a conference room, computer room,
library, reception and tea corner.
The spaces of the school are shared with students who attend English, Spanish
and IT courses, thus creating an international environment which encourages
meetings and exchanges between people from all over the world and gives them the
opportunity to share interesting, enjoyable and cultural activities.
Our Staff
Our staff consists of multilingual friendly
people who provide students with full
assistance and try to fulfill their needs by
welcoming their educational suggestions
and requests and offering advice about
what to do in their free time
Our Teachers
Our teachers are graduate native Italian
speakers, qualified to teach Italian to
speakers of other languages, sensitive to
the culture of origin of each student and
ready to meet any requirements and
personal needs through a constant
interaction with the learners.
Teaching
Methodology
La
Metodologia
Didattica
Our methodology is based on the most modern theories of language teaching: a direct and equal
relationship between teachers and students, Italian-only classrooms right from the first lesson,
the employment of authentic educational materials, the use of the inductive method and the
application of the communicative approach, which focuses on the students' communication
needs without of course excluding the grammatical analysis of the language.
Our lessons are based on the use of various teaching techniques and instruments, which are
personalised according to the students' age, needs and level of language ability.
A free entry test assesses the students' basic language skills, thus allowing them to be placed on
the most suitable course level.
Teaching Materials
All the materials used during the lessons are in Italian. Our teachers mostly use authentic texts,
manuals and multimedia instruments carefully selected to stimulate students' participation and
encourage them to develop the four language skills: listening, speaking reading and writing.
The language items taught are presented in a wider context which refers to typical aspects of the
Italian culture.
Levels
Tutti i nostri corsi sono suddivisi nei 6 livelli previsti dal Quadro Comune Europeo di
Riferimento per le Lingue:
Basic
(A1–A2)
Independent
Proficient
(B1–B2)
(C1–C2)
Students are placed in the most appropriate course level after taking a free written entry test,
followed by a conversation with our Director of Studies or a senior teacher.
In accordance with the Common European Framework, levels are structured as follows:
A1: can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the
satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. Can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and
answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things
he/she has. Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is
prepared to help.
A2: can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate
relevance. Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of
information on familiar and routine matters. Can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her
background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.
B1: can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered
in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most situations likely to arise while travelling in an area
where the language is spoken. Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of
personal interest. Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly
give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.
B2: can understand the main ideas of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including
technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation. Can interact with a degree of fluency and
spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for
either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a
topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
C1: can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning. Can
express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions.
Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Can
produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of
organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.
C2:: can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read. Can summarise information from
different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent
presentation. Can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer
shades of meaning even in more complex situations.
Our Courses
Our consultants assist students in choosing the most suitable course through the
analysis of their personal needs, the evaluation of their basic language knowledge and
detailed syllabus planning.
We offer a wide range of Italian Language Courses, which suit different needs and
look at national and local historical, artistic and cultural characteristics:
Quick Courses
We arrange short Italian group courses for those students who wish to learn Italian in
a short time or choose to have a brief study holiday in Palermo. This way, those who
stay in our city only for a few days have the opportunity to learn basic words and
everyday expressions that enable them to interact easily and immediately or refresh
and improve their Italian. Students have the opportunity to attend classes for a varied
number of hours during 1, 2, 3 or more weeks.
Smart Courses
Ordering a plate of spaghetti or presenting a complex dissertation, writing a letter to a
friend or your manager, writing a simple diary page or a long complicated article,
talking about food or the greenhouse effect, speaking about your habits or the
international economy. These courses make it possible to develop all language skills
in only 50 hours, simply for the pleasure of learning and using Italian, without the
stress of a final exam!
Standard Courses
We offer our 80-hour group courses to foreign students who live in Sicily or have
more time available. These are particularly suitable for those who wish to learn Italian
in-depth by devoting considerable space to each of the four main language skills and
those learners who wish to do the necessary exam to acquire a recognised
certificate.
One to One Lessons
For those who wish to learn Italian in a personalised way and those who have
problems of time or are bound to jobs that do not leave room for them to attend a
group course, we arrange packages of individual lessons aimed at meeting the
student’s personal learning needs. Days, times and programmes are agreed
according to the student’s requirements.
Conversation Classes
We organise specific group courses for students who want to strengthen their
capacity to speak Italian on a variety of topics: work, relationships, art, politics,
economy, social problems and much more.
Preparation Courses for CILS Exams
We arrange preparation courses for CILS exams, during which students measure
themselves against all the examination units through exercises and mocks.
The CILS (Certificate of Italian as a Foreign Language), awarded by Siena
University for Foreigners and recognised by the Italian State, attests the degree of
competence achieved in Italian as a foreign language and can be used for work
placement, Italian teaching and the admission of non-EU students into Italian
universities.
Courses for Kids 5-10 Years
We arrange Italian language courses for kids aged 5-10. These courses are divided
into three different levels based on the student’s age and previous language
knowledge.
Younger students have the opportunity to learn Italian in a spontaneous and natural
way through the listening and repetition of simple words, the use of creativity and the
execution of simple commands, as well as by playing, drawing, miming, singing and
watching cartoons.
Courses for Young Leaners
We organise specific courses for young learners aged 11-13, divided into three levels
according to their age and previous language knowledge.
Students learn Italian through a stimulating approach based on games, competition,
role-playing, song listening, video watching and conversation with their teacher and
classmates on interesting and familiar themes such as family, the school, friends,
sports, free time, music, the world of Internet, fashion and many others.
Seminars on Italian Culture
Periodically and on request, we arrange seminars on key themes and features of the
Italian and Sicilian cultures, such as traditions, art, cinema, literature and cuisine.
Training for Italian Teachers
We provide training courses for teachers of Italian to speakers of other languages:
preparation and training courses for Ditals exams, refresher or in-depth seminars for
Italian teachers who work abroad and teaching practise.
