They say silence is golden but with multiple
award winner Lira, that is definitely not true. She
shares her golden moments with us.
Golden SONG
All my love, the title song from my first album, will
always be special to me. This song kicked
Beoncé's Dangerously from the number 2
position of the South African billboards in 2003 –
a first time ever in South Africa. For me it was very
symbolic. All my love took back what belonged to
South Africa.
Golden POSSIBILITIES
As a child, I had a very vivid imagination. I always
imagined myself being someone else, being in
different places. Now that I am older, I realise the
power of imagination in attracting things. I
believe my imagination made the sky the limit
with endless possibilities
Golden BRAND
Growing up in the township of Daveyton, I never
thought my dreams would come true. Therefore,
I want my name, my brand, to
represent hope and possibility.
That you can be whatever you
want to be and that nobody
can dictate how you should
be.
Golden REVELATION
I can clearly remember the first time I had to
perform on my own and had to captivate a whole
audience.
It was difficult for me as far as this goes: I knew I
had the voice, I knew I was charming but I had
developed a complex about my physical
appearance.
People always said: “Look at her. She is so skinny.”
It felt like I was going to disappear on stage. My
demeanour was very apologetic and I struggled
with that for a long while. I had no presence on
stage and couldn't connect with the audience.
The turning point came when I saw a Michael
Jackson concert on TV. It was this huge stage and
when he walked up and paused, everybody just
started to scream. Without doing anything, he
was connecting with his audience. Michael
wasn't fazed about what people thought of him.
He was very comfortable with himself and his
energy was simply connecting everyone. For the
first time I understood that confidence is human
body language that connects all of us. If
somebody with confidence walks into a room,
you can feel them.
So, I went to the mirror and practised confidence.
I decided that I would like to be a dazzling
performer. I had to decide what dazzling looks
like. How does a dazzling performer talk? What
does a dazzling performer wear?
Golden MOMENT
I am so lucky. I had so many highlights in my
career and they are all so different but if I must
choose, it was performing for Nelson Mandela,
Oprah and Barack Obama.
Golden MOTTO
Speaking of Oprah, the one thing I know for sure is
if you set an intention for yourself, life will

respond. If you have decided what you want out of life, life will give
you the opportunities, the people, and the resources. Life was
destined to support you, so trust it.

GOLDEN FLIGHT
I was 28 when I left the continent for the first time. For me,
everything happened very late, but it is never too late.
What I remember about that flight was that I was looking
down, it was during the night and it was just so amazing to
see the African continent below me.
I'm still exited every time I fly and I always ask for a
window seat. I never want to be blasé about anything.
Part of this excitement is hanging out at the airport. I
like Sunglass Hut as well as getting a quick meal
from Kauai, but I visit Letsema Spa more than any
other place because I enjoy getting a quick
massage before boarding a plane. The ladies are
awesome therapists

20 YEARS

Thursday, 23 July, marked Airports
Company South Africa turning twenty.
This milestone was celebrated across all nine
airports with lots of free entertainment and a
20% discount at all stores.
At O.R. Tambo International Airport, this day was
even more special as the Oliver Reginald Tambo
Memorial exhibition, which is aimed at
honouring one of South Africa's national heroes
and extraordinary freedom fighters, was
unveiled. 2013 also marks twenty years since the
passing of Oliver Tambo.
“O.R. Tambo International Airport is honoured to
have this iconic figure that stood for education
and selfless sacrifice, as its namesake. We always
need to remind ourselves about the life and
legacy of this revered elephant of the struggle for
liberation and his ability to inspire the nation,”
says Unathi Batyashe-Fillis, manager: brand and
communication management at O.R. Tambo
International Airport.
“O.R. Tambo International Airport prides itself on
its rich history. We have a story to tell, of where
the airport has been and of O.R. Tambo, the
selfless icon after whom the airport was named”,
This permanent exhibition can be visited free of
charge at the airport's International Viewing
Deck.
