No. 15 Week 4 Term 4 - 27 October 2015
From the
PRINCIPAL
INSIDE THIS ISSUE:
Recent weeks has seen many students busy with exams
and other assessment tasks. We continue to pray for
those doing the HSC. Also, our next cohort of senior
students were involved, with their parents, in an excellent
‘Surviving Year 12’ Night, as well as productive Parent/
Teacher/Student Interviews, with the purpose of helping
them develop purposeful goals and establish good study
patterns for aiming towards the 2016 HSC. Years 9 and
10 have completed a battery of tests and Years 7 and 8
have their turn this week. Also, as normal during this time
of year, the Primary staff conduct various standardised
testing in order to evaluate individual progress as well as
the effectiveness of learning programs etc.
I announced Secondary House Captains recently.
We congratulate: Rachel Vaega (Sharks); lakopo Esera
(Eagles); Dominic Dela Cruz (Rams); Riley Fanning
(Lions). The other Secondary House Leaders will be
elected this week and announced soon. In addition,
we created a new leadership position–Service Vice–
Captain – and we congratulate Carmela Paje for being
appointed. We look forward to all our new student leaders
undertaking their responsibilities with humility and
energy. It’s also now the usual time to begin consideration
of Primary students for the various leadership roles, with
announcements made at their Presentation Night.
Last Friday many people were delighted by the
performances of many Primary students during our
Primary Music Assembly. It is a fantastic opportunity
for all our budding musicians to share their developing
abilities and to increase their confidence. Beginner
Band, Intermediate Band, Guitar Ensemble, Ukelele
Ensemble, RickyJ Dancers, RJ SingStars all participated
really well, making us feel very proud of their efforts and
the wonderful contributions of the staff involved: Mrs
Robertson, Mrs Vowell, Mr Bogaz, Mrs Venables, Miss
Watson and Mrs Wells . Well done everyone!

Much of our music and performing arts development
leads to praising God in great ways. The Bible encourages
such expression and exuberance:
“Let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to
the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before Him with
thanksgiving and extol Him with music and song.” (Psalm
95:1-2)
Over 150 of our students have a weekly private lesson
with one of the Peripatetic Tutors. Many of these students
will be performing this Wednesday evening in two
concurrent Peripatetic Music Concerts. We wish them
well as they demonstrate their musical progress over the
year. We also acknowledge the important benefits from
learning music and we are fortunate to have such a good
group of visiting tutors, co-ordinated by Mrs Robertson.
Our fourth annual RJ Bike Challenge is only weeks
away, so make sure your bike (and/or your child’s bike)
is ready for an enjoyable Saturday morning. This event
caters for all ages, from Kindergarten through to adults,
providing fun challenges from short, easy distances to
longer ones. Notes will be distributed shortly - make sure
you sign-up asap. House points can be earned and it’s the
final opportunity to make an impact on the Champion
House tally.
Orientation Days are coming up soon as well; we look
forward to welcoming new 2016 students - Year 7 next
week and Kindergarten in a fortnight’s time.
Best wishes

MISSION TEAM MEMBERS

DOMINIC DELA CRUZ
Having been on two Missions now, I’ve enjoyed this experience
thanks to the team I shared it with and every opportunity I was
given to serve. I can confidently say no Mission Trip is ever the
same because God creates new experiences, challenges and ties
together different people based on His will and purpose.
TIMOTHY SLADEN
I was part of the Music team for the 2015 Mission Trip. I feel like
God placed me there to use my talent for music to worship him.
I applied for Mission wanting to not do music just for once, yet
ended up doing music the whole Trip, and now especially after
it I’ve learnt God has a plan and doesn’t do anything without a
reason and knowing that just strengthens my faith knowing that
He is the designer of my life and He wouldn’t throw any challenge
at me if He didn’t think I could overcome it.
YASMYN LOLIS
I applied for Mission this year because I wanted to expand my
knowledge of who God is, not just in my life but in other people’s
lives - to know where other people stood with God and how I
could help them through my own experiences. And as a bonus,
to be hanging out with kids, growing bonds and relationships for
a week, it was just simply going to be fun!
RHIANNAH GAUCI
Mission Trip was a great opportunity to share Jesus’ love with
the people I met. Going on this Trip has taught me to make the
most of each opportunity to share the Gospel, openly and wholeheartedly. I was really touched by the stories and testimonies I
heard and witnessing the work of Paul and Erin was incredible.
Their effort and persistence to continue sharing God’s Word
through the toughest of times is amazing and through their
Christ-like attitude they impact people’s lives that they meet.
The examples they set and the experience I have gained whilst
being on Mission has given me the confidence to pursue future
opportunities like this.
perspective changes, along with the way you conduct yourself
and act. As leaders on Mission, it changes our perspective by the
situation and the circumstances of the people there and it really
humbles us to not take anything for granted.
DALYN ASSUR
When you’re a leader under the Father you lead in humility, in
love, you’ll make sure you’re serving alongside your team - not be
authoritative and use your power to your advantage or just watch
others serve. Especially on this Trip, as missionaries out on the
field, it’s all about working as a team, being one unit like the Bible
speaks of being one in the body of Christ - on Mission is one
practical example of where this ties in.
Michael O’Hare
Deputy Principal
BRITNEY OLIVE
Going into the Mission Trip I expected people to hang out with
their usual groups, segregated by grades. However, throughout
the Trip I was given a pleasant surprise because as a team we were
able to become one big group of friends where we got to know one
another really well and I am so thankful for these relationships
because after the Trip, I now have some really good friends in
other Years - and that is one of the biggest rewards from going
on Mission - becoming close friends with people you have never
even spoken to before; and I can proudly say that Mission is one
of the best things I’ve ever done!
BENJAMIN CANTRE

The transition from white socks with thin light blue
stripes to ones with navy stripes is happening this year
due to manufacturer difficulties. From 2016 only white
socks with navy stripes will be permitted.
REMINDER
The scrunchies recently displayed for sale at Lowes St
Marys were an initiative of Lowes’ Head Office. They
are not part of the Uniform Policy and have therefore
been removed from sale. The approved scrunchie
colour remains as navy.

Secondary
SEGMENTS
Years 7 and 8 are currently completing their Yearly
exams, and Years 9 and 10 did so last week. Their
manner and attitude during these exams has been
commendable – they have all worked studiously, for
extended time periods, and teachers will be able to
gain another snapshot of learning and understanding
through the process.
The Yearly exams are a sign that the term is nearly halfway through and all the “big” events at the end of the
year are drawing closer. At RJ, our culture is to work
right through to the last day, and teaching programs
are designed to provide that stability and focus. The
holiday period is a long break, and it is important
students don’t feel that the “holiday” begins a week
earlier. Students should also be in attendance right up
until the last day.
Year 12 students have a number of Study Days during
Term 4 and have certainly “plunged” into their work.
Expectations have been raised a step higher. Parents
should not take Year 12 students on vacations during
term time, as valuable schooling is missed and no
extensions can be granted for assessment tasks. Illness
and Misadventure applications must be completed
in full and verified by independent evidence, and
submitted by the student when they return to School.
BOSTES requires schools to maintain clear policies
and procedures which are fair and administered
equitably.
I have been busy these last few weeks compiling
“Footprints”, our School Yearbook, which will be
distributed at Presentation Night to each family. It
has been exciting looking back over the past twelve
months (we always delve into the end of the previous
year) and see the many different activities and events
which have occurred. This year’s book will be bigger
than before, and I think 2016 will be bigger again!
Jenny Clay
Assistant Principal/Head of Secondary
ATTENTION
Students who have received 4 Principal’s Awards,
please bring them into the office to receive a School
Plaque on Presentation Night. The cut-off date is
Friday 6 November.
STUDENT LEADERSHIP 2015/16
Last week, the following students were appointed as
new Leaders in the Secondary Section:
Isaiah’s Eagles House Captain - Iakopo Esera
David’s Rams House Captain - Dominic Dela Cruz
Daniel’s Lions House Captain - Riley Fanning
Noah’s Sharks House Captain - Rachel Vaega
Service Vice-Captain - Carmela Paje
Voting has taken place for Secondary House Leaders
and the new leaders will be announced shortly.

TRAVEL PASSES 2016
The majority of students who have bus or train
passes will automatically receive new passes for
2016 at the beginning of the New Year. There is
a 2 week grace period for these students where
their current 2015 bus or train pass is accepted
as students wait for their renewal to arrive and
be distributed at School.
For those students moving from Year 2 to
Year 3, or Year 6 to Year 7, new applications
are required. Travel Pass forms have been sent
home to current Year 2 and Year 6 students who
already have Travel Passes. Please complete the
form and return to Student Reception before
27 November 2015. Should you require an
application, please enquire at Student Reception.
Eligibility requirements vary dependent on
the age of the student, as set by the Transport
Authority. Some students who previously had
passes may not be eligible as they move into
older years at School. Parents have the option
to purchase Travel Passes for their child direct
from the relevant transport operator.

SECONDARY GRIP LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
On Friday 23 October, a group of RJ students ranging from
Years 9 to 11 attended a GRIP Leadership Conference hosted by
Western Sydney University on the Werrington South campus.
The Conference saw schools from all over Sydney’s West gather
to learn about the practical elements of leadership and how we
can contribute to our school as student leaders.
The first half of the Conference featured the session titled
‘Building a Team that Contributes’. The focus of this session was
to learn how we, as leaders, can make an impact in our schools
both as a team and as individuals. We learnt that there are three
areas where as a team we can contribute to our school; prescribed
tasks, perpetual activities and the pinnacle project. In this session,
we gained insight as to how we can overcome our reluctance to
complete the ‘boring’ and mundane tasks that are included in
the role, how to make perpetual activites (such as carnivals and
fundraisers) unique and different, and how to create and organise
successful and innovative pinnacle projects. We also learnt about
the four qualities a student leader should possess in order to make
a key contribution to their team; resilience, reliability, positive
relationships, and respect.
Then after morning tea, the students had the choice of attending
one of the two elective sessions titled ‘How to Make Your
Speeches Dynamic’ and ‘How to Make Your Events Dynamic’.
RJ students split up, and I attended the session about events.
In this session we gained insight on the struggles of student
leaders to think of new ideas and tips as to how to overcome
these struggles. We were given the task to collaborate with other
students leaders and explain the different events our school
hosts in order to brainstorm new ideas and apply them to our
school environment. This was beneficial to us because it helped
us to expand our ideas to different possibilities. In this session we
also learnt that in order to make our events dynamic, changing
promotion strategies, creating action, and creating an effect on
others are goals to strive for and can be extremely beneficial to
the success of events.
After lunch we were able to choose another elective session from
the two sessions titled ‘How to Motivate Others’ and ‘How to
Say Bye Bye to Bullying’. I attended the session on motivating
others, and gained useful insight on the four different types of
people leaders will encounter in their role (the participators,
spectators, whingers and saboteurs) and how to encourage them
to participate. We learnt that there will be five things leaders can
do to engage and motivate people; becoming familiar with people
and knowing who they are, stating your purpose, making it fun,
leading by example, and giving recognition. In this session we
also heard from various student leaders about the struggles they
have faced engaging people and motivating people to participate
in events such as carnivals or house meetings. As we shared our
struggles, we came up with solutions to combat and overcome
the issues discussed.
The day also included small 10-minute ‘Loud Noises’ segments
hosted by Andy and Rachael where we got to compete with other
schools with loud and crazy games as a refresher from the serious
tone of the Conference. These games saw students get quite
competitive and passionate for their schools and featured crazy
moments, including off-key humming, a wild round of charades
and dance-offs.
Overall, the GRIP Leadership Conference inspired RJ students
to make a contribution to our School in any way we can,
regardless of whether or not we possessed a badge. We learnt
that each individual can make a contribution as a capable leader.
Not only were we reminded of our capabilities, but we were
also provided with useful tips to overcome issues associated
with student leadership and ultimately achieve success. The
Conference featured a dynamic combination of interactive
activites, discussion, tips and games to help students network,
brainstorm ideas, and be equipped with tools to make a successful
contribution to our schools.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD
One of the special programs that we are involved in each year is
Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child.
Samaritan’s Purse is a non-profit, Christian organisation providing
emergency relief and development assistance to suffering people
around the world. Samaritan’s Purse is meeting the physical
needs of victims of war, famine, natural disaster, poverty and
disease with the aim of demonstrating God’s love and sharing
the Good News of Jesus Christ. The aid and assistance are given
without regard to the race, creed, gender, religion, or ethnicity of
the beneficiaries. Some of the additional projects that Samaritan’s
Purse operates along with Operation Christmas Child are:
Water, Sanitation & Hygiene; Health & Nutrition; Education
& Vocational Training; People at Risk; Animals & Agriculture
Livelihoods and Church Resourcing
Students in Stage 4 have received a brochure that outlines the
Operation Christmas Child Program. It is primarily run in Stage
4, but all students are encouraged to be involved. Special boxes
to pack the gifts are available at School from Mr Rowe in the
D Block staffroom. The boxes are then distributed to children
around the world. The children come from some of the poorest
countries on earth.
The process for collecting gifts to pack into a shoe box is as
follows:
1. Choose whether your box will be for a boy or girl
2. Choose an age group 2-4, 5-9 or 10-14
3. Fill the box with new gifts that fit into the following categories

ASSEMBLY
It was a joy to hear extra-curricular groups perform at Assembly
last week. We heard instrumental performances from the
Primary Guitar Ensemble, Beginner Band, Intermediate Band
and Primary Ukulele Ensemble. It was encouraging to hear the
musical talents of our students develop over the course of the
year. Our youngest singing and dancing groups, RickyJ Singers
and RickyJ Dancers, were excited to perform for us and sang
and danced beautifully. This week 1R will present our first class
item for the term looking at the ‘I Am Statements of Jesus’. Next
week (Friday 6 November) 1J will present their item. A short
Remembrance Day message will also be presented.
the students’ involvement in House meetings throughout 2015.
Leadership positions will be finalised later in the term. Captains
will be announced at the Year 6 Graduation Assembly on Friday
27 November (parents of Captains will be advised). House
Leaders will be announced at the Primary Presentation Night on
Wednesday 2 December.
DEBATING GALA DAY
Congratulations to Year 5 and Year 6 members of the debating
team who represented RJ at the IPSHA Debating Gala Day last
week. Students have worked consistently throughout the year to
develop their debating skills to reach a competitive level. Year
6 students successfully argued their topic, while Year 5 students
were out-argued by their competition.
SCHOOL UNIFORM
Parents are reminded that the jacket continues to be the outer
garment that students are expected to wear throughout the year
on cooler days. The jumper is only to be worn additional to the
jacket as needed, usually in the winter months. All students
require a hat (wide-brim or legionnaire) at School in Terms 1 and
4. A large number of students do not currently have a hat. Hats are
essential for sun protection during PE and Sport activities and for
playing in open air areas during recess and lunch. Please ensure
all uniform items are clearly labelled. The Lost Property box is
located at the base of the stage in the new Primary Courtyard.
ITEMS GOING MISSING
We have had a number of items go missing from bags in Year 3
throughout the year. The students have been reminded by their
classroom teachers, Mr Reed and myself that they are not to
access another student’s bag or tote tray at any time and that they
are not permitted to take items that do not belong to them. Please
reinforce this important message with your children. If you child
does come home with items that do not belong to them could
you please contact Mr Reed. Parents are reminded that students
should not bring large sums of money or valuable items to School.
KINDERGARTEN ORIENTATION DAYS
Kindergarten Orientation Days will be held on Wednesday
18 November (9:00-11:15am) and Thursday 19 November
(9:00-11:45am). We look forward to meeting our new 2016
Kindergarten children and their families on these days.
MUSIC PERIPATETIC CONCERTS
Music Peripatetic Concerts will be held tomorrow in A3/A4 and
B12 commencing at 6:30pm. Students involved in these Concerts
have received a note. Music tuition at RJ provides our young
students with the opportunity to develop their musical and
performance skills and we look forward to hearing the pieces
they have been busily rehearsing for the Concerts.
PRIMARY LEADERSHIP 2016
We have had a huge number of Year 5 students complete
application forms to be considered for Primary Captain and
House Leadership positions in 2016. Applications will be
reviewed (based on student responses to application questions,
effort and behaviour in class, and commitment to the Young
Leaders Program) and a number selected to interview for Primary
Captain positions. House Leaders will be voted by students, and
supported by House Coordinator recommendation based on
RJ BIKE CHALLENGE
The RJ Bike Challenge, a great community morning of bike
riding, fun activities and yummy morning tea will be held on
Saturday 21 November. Be sure to keep this morning free in your
calendar.
WAKAKIRRI
The RJ community is able to cast their vote for our Primary
performers in The People’s Choice Awards category on the
Wakakirri website:
http://www.wakakirri.com/mainsite/nsw-primary-peopleschoice-award-richard-johnson-anglican-school/. Voting closes
on 30 November. Our students performed amazingly in this
competition and our story was an uplifting, positive message in
line with the culture of our School. Use the link above and click

Debating
NEWS
The Year 5 and 6 debating teams competed in an IPSHA
Debating Gala Day hosted by St Peter’s Anglican School,
Campbelltown on 20 October. The Year 6 team debated
the topic, “Caution is killing creativity” and the Year 5
team, “Technology is stifling thinking”. The Year 6 team
won their debate and the Year 5 team narrowly lost theirs.
Both teams did a wonderful job representing RJ and
enjoyed the demands of writing rebuttal under pressure.
Congratulations to Jaeden Aldana, Butros Michael, Zack
Poucher, Melody Scoble, Jemma Askew, Ethan Bides,
Timothy Johnston, Caitlin Midgley and Jacob Bailey who
fulfilled the role of Chairperson for two debates.

Toys
‘N’ TUCKER
Page 10 - 27 October 2015
Each year Anglicare runs a ‘Toys ‘n’ Tucker’ Appeal to provide toys and food for families in need at Christmas.
Our School is supporting the Appeal again this year and we would love to have donations of any of the items listed
below. Please don’t send in glass jars or anything fragile or any chocolates.
Also, please don’t wrap presents as they must be unwrapped prior to
distribution.
This is a wonderful way to help those in need - we can make a
difference!
Cash donations can also be made – these can be left at the School Office.
For the Primary Section, donations can be left in the basket at each
classroom.
Secondary students can leave donations in the basket in Student
Reception.
The last day for donations to be received is Friday 20 November.
Thank you for your support.
DONATION IDEAS:
• Gifts for children - toys, games, books and activity sets.
• Gifts for teenagers - sporting gear, games, books and toiletry sets.
• New clothes - t-shirts, shorts and caps for all ages.
• Food - tinned ham, fish, vegetables & fruit; Christmas cakes and puddings; pasta and rice; long-life milk.
• Wrapping paper - so parents can enjoy the experience of wrapping gifts for their children.

P&F CALENDAR AND CHRISTMAS CARD FUNDRAISER
FOR PRIMARY STUDENTS
This term, the P&F are organising a Calendar and Christmas Card Fundraiser for Primary
students.
In class, Primary students will create their own Christmas themed artwork. Artworks will then be used to create lovely calendars and cards which would make great Christmas gift ideas for family and friends.
• Calendars – your child’s artwork (including name, age and School logo) is laser copied, laminated and displayed in a calendar with 12 tear off months. The artwork can be kept at the end of the year as a keep sake.
School term, public holidays and activity stickers provide opportunity for noting special occasions. Size = A4
(300mm x 210mm) Cost: $13 per calendar
• Cards – your child’s artwork (including name, age and School logo on the back of the card) is printed onto
high quality card. Cards are left blank inside for personalised messages to be added. They are packaged in
packs of 8 with red envelopes. Cost $13 per pack of 8
Orders must be returned to School by Friday 30 October. Orders should be placed in an envelope, clearly labelled with your child’s name, grade and P&F Fundraiser. Payment may be made by cash (exact money only)
or cheque made out to “Richard Johnson Anglican School P&F Association”.
Separate orders need to be placed for each child to ensure the correct artwork is printed. Items should be
received by the end of November. If you have any questions, please
contact Colette Abbott-Bailey (P&F fundraiser representative) on
0402 117 980.
Thank you for supporting our School through this P&F Fundraising
event.
Yours sincerely,
Narelle Taylor
