Fostering: A Fairy Tale Ending
Once upon a time there was a brother and sister named Hansel and Gretel.
While they didn’t meet a wicked witch or get a lot of candy, they did
encounter some life-changing events. They lost their home due to their
family’s financial situation and ended up moving North (from Kentucky).
Luckily the shelter moved them to One by One, where we could take time to
find the right “furever” home for this dazzling duo. After a few weeks at one of
the adoption centers, Hansel and Gretel moved in with a foster mom—Kathy.
The two siblings settled into the new foster home in record time—these Maine
Coons were amazing! They greeted the foster mom at the door, made friends
with the other cats and two dogs, and spent as much time as possible warming their way into the foster mom’s heart.
While we thought we were going to have to physically remove the pair from
the foster mom’s “over loving” grip, she joyfully (well, joyfully and tearily) handed them to their new mom and
human brother earlier this year. Like all fairy tales, Hansel and Gretel’s tale ends happily. They found a forever
home with a huge sunroom, lots of birdies to watch and a view of water.
One by One has many cats and kittens like Hansel and Gretel. Foster homes are critical to helping
them experience a fairy tale ending!
We’re Looking For Fosters For Our Feline Friends
Do you have a spare room and big heart? Are you experiencing empty nest syndrome? Well, fostering may be for you.
These “kids” will not talk back (usually) and they rarely ask you for money to go “hang” with their friends. What they
will ask for is love, some minor grooming (more than minor if your feline friend is long-haired) and the basics like food,
water and a cozy place to sleep 22 out of 24 hours a day. You need to bring your fosters to adoption events - and
hopefully hang around so you can tell potential adopters all about your feline friends, and to vet appointments (as
needed). And maybe you will end up a “foster failure” and adopt your first foster . . . It happens to the best of us you
know . . . But this is one “failure” you’ll be proud to talk about.

To Declaw or Not Delcaw: There’s No Question!
One by One has a no declaw policy for
all cats and kittens that are adopted.
We have many reasons for this policy, all of which are listed on our website. But, this first
reason should be enough - declawing has a name: AMPUTATION. And, it’s amputation
repeated 10 times!
Declawing can result in many complications - physical and behavioral - including excruciating
pain, nerve damage, and personality change (outgoing cats become withdrawn and introverted,
litter box problems can arise, etc.). A cat relies on its claws as its primary means of defense,
and removing the claws may make a cat feel defenseless and in constant stress.
Other facts:
•
Cats use claws for balance, to jump and to climb. Declawing forces cats to walk in an
unnatural way.
•
Many other countries have banned declawing or labeled it inhumane.
You can have nice furniture even if your cats have claws. Use scratch posts, have kitty spa days
to trim nails (but avoid nail polish, since cats typically do not appreciate too much pawicuring),
use cat trees with carpet and sisal to keep the nails naturally trimmed. It takes a little patience
and a little work, but your cat will thank you!

Kittens Here, There, Everywhere
It has been a very busy kitten season! (Reminder - if you know of feral cats that have not been
spayed or neutered, please try to change that.)
We have kittens of all ages - although this season’s “crop” has been mainly male. All kittens are
listed online (http://1by1catrescue.org/our-cats/available-cats and on our Facebook
(facebook.com/1by1catrescue) page. If you’re interested in adopting any of this cuddly critters,
visit an adoption center (Wyomissing PetSmart, Temple PetSmart, or Exeter Petco) or our website
to complete an Adoption Application.
Fluff & Big Eyes, Spot, Fievel, Star & Yuki . About 15 weeks old. Fluff (left) & Big Eyes (middle) are
brothers who would love to stay together. Spot is their little sister. Fievel is a cute little guy born in foster
care. Star (orange & white female) and Yuki (black & white male) are best buddies looking for a home
together.
Jigsaw & Minstrel, Patch, Jessie & James. Pictured left to right: Minstrel (gray female) & brother
Jigsaw are a bonded pair. Patch is a high energy calico looking for kitty playmate and high energy family.
Jesse & James are 14 week old brothers (there’s 2 cats in picture on right!).
Lincoln & Noodles, Ernie & Verna, Jed. Pictured left to right: Siblings Lincoln (male) & Noodles
(female), need to be adopted together. Ernie & Verna have a brother (Bert) not pictured - all 3 are active
and adorable. Jed had a lot of Clampett siblings who were all lucky enough to find home; he’s about 6
months old now and is a sweet boy looking for a kitty playmate.

HAPPY MAIL...Their Lives Are Now Complete.
(we mean the humans’ lives, of course!)
“Garth” was adopted in 2009 and has been a delight to
his adopted mommy. She says he is “sweet, and loves to
be loved on.” He walks on a harness and leash so he
can safely explore the outside courtyard. He looks quite
content, doesn’t he?
Baxter & Chloe were adopted from One by
One in 2004 (original names were Nadia and
Mikey). They are now happily spoiled (they
even have their own blanket!)
Jethro and Chester (formerly known as Peter &
Pettigrew) are eating and playing like crazy! It’s good
they have a few (or many!) toys to keep them busy.

Bali (formerly known as Dante) is growing up
to be a handsome (and really loved) little
boy. His mom reports the fur around his
neck has grown in, she’s says he is GORGEOUS and she’s VERY in love with him!
“I Vant To Be ALONE”
Not all cats like to share attention with others. There are various reasons including past events - maybe they were bullied by other cats or people in their previous home. At One by One, we observe each
of our cats and kittens so we know what type of home would be perfect for them. Since we have found
the cliché “cats are like potato chips, you can’t have just one” to be pretty true, it sometimes means
these “solocats” sometimes wait pretty long to find their “furever” home.
CALLISTO is a shy guy who
has been with One by One
for over 8 years.
He’s looking for a home
without children, dogs, or
cats. He’d love a cushy bed
and snuggly human!
STARGAZER loves people but does
not like other cats.
FILIGRY is a darling
Persian mix looking
for a home without
children, dogs or cats.
She LOVES
humans, and is
looking for a lap to
call her own.
PASADENA is a large male LAP cat that begs
to be picked up and hugged. Best as only cat,
so he can have ALL of the attention!
BRANDY is a gorgeous
Ragdoll that has been with One
by One since 2009. He has had
a LOT of human-caused trouble and needs a home with no
men, no cats, and no dogs.
BOO is a beautiful
female, good with dogs
and cats. Her family
moved & left her at a
kill shelter.
JAXX is an 11 year old
declawed male who loves
kids and men but does
not like other cats.

I want to help save the lives of stray and unwanted cats who have
no place to go. One by One is a 501(c)(3) non-profit
organization and your donations are tax deductible!
Thank
you!
If you need for us to send you a receipt, please check this box! Every life that enters One by One has meaning and deserves to be saved. We are only able to provide for our animals
through voluntary efforts and your donations. Our funds are used to keep our cats healthy– spay/neuters, dental work, vaccines, vet visits, and medications prove to be very costly, yet necessary, expenses.
Please continue to support our no-kill mission, where our goal is to adopt out every cat who enters our organization one by
one (or two by two, whenever possible). Donations to all non-profit organizations across the world have decreased due to
the troubled economy. We are no exception, our funds are desperately low. Please help in any way possible. We really
appreciate your contributions. Thank you!
Please spay/neuter your pets!!
