Efforts for Waste Reduction
At Lidl, we are constantly working closely with our waste service providers to achieve zero waste to landfill.
Currently, between 75%-80% of Lidl waste is diverted away from landfill.
Over the last 6 months huge efforts have been made to further reduce our waste and increase all areas of
recycling.
Average General Waste bin collections per store reduced by 6%.

Average bin weight per store has been reduced by 22%.

Cardboard
Compactors are in
place in 42 Lidl Stores.
Cardboard Balers are
in place in 101 Lidl
stores.
All compactors are
serviced & collected
by Greenstar & all
baler cardboard is
returned to the RDC.
All cardboard from the
compactors is then
recycled through
Greenstar & bales
from balers recycled
by Smurfit Kappa.
Clear & Coloured Plastic Recycling
Clear & Coloured
plastic is collected &
segregated in all Lidl
Stores
Plastic is then
returned to Lidl’s
Regional Distribution
Centres where it is
baled.
All plastic bales are
then collected and
recycled through

Store Waste & Recycling Area
All Lidl stores have a colour coded store waste segregation system in place.
This system simplifies and encourages the process of waste segregation for all store staff.
Waste categories are based around:

CAT 3 Waste –
• All CAT 3 Waste is segregated at store level and disposed of into Red Waste Bins.
• These Red Bins are collected by food waste management company FSM.
• This means that all of Lidl’s CAT 3 Waste material is diverted from the General Waste Bins.
Compost Waste –
• All Fruit & Veg and Bread & Cakes Waste is segregated at store level and disposed of into
Green Waste Bags.
• These green bags are then collected by food waste management company FSM.
• This means that all of Lidl’s Compost Waste material is diverted from the General Waste Bins
Dry Mixed Recyclable Waste –
• All Dry Mixed Recyclable Waste is collected at store level and disposed of into Clear Waste
Bags.
• These Clear Bags are disposed of in specific “DMR” waste wheelie bins located at all stores.
These bins are collected by the waste service providers.
• This means that all of Lidl’s Dry Mixed Recyclable Waste material is diverted from the General
Waste Bins.

Clear & Coloured Plastic –
• All Clear & Coloured Plastic is segregated at store level and placed into clear waste bags.
• These Clear Waste Bags are returned to Lidl’s Regional Distribution Centres and from there,
they are baled and collected by recycling company Leinster Environmental.
• This means that all of Lidl’s Clear & Coloured Plastic is diverted from the general waste bins.

Lidl Shreds and Recycles all Waste Paper and Documentation from its
RDCs and Head Office facilities.
On average, approx. 2.4 tonnes of Shredded Paper is recycled each
month.

Involvement of Staff



Lidl is a company which is constantly striving to reduce its areas of waste and increase overall
recycling volumes.
There is a huge focus put on waste segregation at both store and regional distribution centre level.
All Lidl staff play a vital role in reaching the overall goal of zero waste to landfill and optimised
generation of recyclable material.
