In doubt about the passenger potentials of an airport? With the
Scan Of New Air Routes (SONAR)
you will receive a systematic search for new commercially viable routes. The MKmSONAR report includes
A: Theoretical Approach
A brief summary of the methodology used to perform the analysis with references to
published papers where models are explored in detail.
B: The airport under consideration
1. Description of the region, (optional) text – add your own description of the airport
considered
2. Air transport accessibility status quo, map – by average travel time minutes
3. Catchment by regions, status quo, map & table – by market shares of the airport
including attracted population, GDP or Employees per region
4. European destinations served, status quo, map – by frequency
5. Destinations served outside Europe, list – of airports
C: For each new potential route identified
1. Network sheaf, graph including successor and predecessor segments – by total
passengers
2. Estimated demand, table – total, local, transfer, business, non-business passengers
figures
3. Technical route information, table – distance, suggestion of airline, aircraft and
schedule including corresponding capacity, frequency and load factor
4. Spatial distribution of passengers, maps – for both airports connected by the route
5. Top transfer destinations, table – from-via-to airport transfer connections by frequency
6. Airport choice, graph – identified route and competing alternative routes
7. Airlines market position at the destination airport, table – market shares of airlines
serving the destination airport
8. European destinations linked by destination airport, status quo, graph – by frequency
9. Destinations served outside Europe by the destination airport, list – of airports
D: Effects on the airport under consideration
1. Estimated passenger demand of the new routes proposed, summary table – total,
local, transfer, business, non-business passengers figures
2. Estimated key figures concerning the proposed routes, summary table – passenger
and aircraft mileage and aircraft movements, fuel consumption, passenger hours saved
on a years base
3. New routes, summary table – total passengers, share of transfer and business
travellers, aircraft movements
6. Catchment by regions including identified routes, map & table – by market shares of
the airport including attracted population, GDP or employees per region
4. Change of catchment by new routes, map – change in market shares
7. Air transport accessibility including identified routes, map – by average travel time
minutes
5. Change of accessibility by new routes, map & table – by average travel time minutes
6. Conclusions and recommendations
All air traveller markets within, to and from Europe are covered by the systematic MKmSONAR investigation. This approach can be dedicated as well to investigate strategic
scenarios as well as to check passenger potentials of route specifications already in focus.

D: Effects on the airport under consideration:
On the one hand section D summaries the effects of all routes indicated by the
previous section B and on the other hand the differences to the status quo situation
pointed out in section A are displayed. A text with final conclusions concerning all new
routes detected finalises the analyses. Graphs and tables are similar to the ones
shown for section B and C. An Appendix containing some examples as advice for the
interpretation of each analyses type is attached at the end of the MKm-SONAR report.
