PET EXPO IS ONE MONTH AWAY!
April 18 & 19, 2015
OUR MISSION
The Allen County SPCA will promote
the prevention of cruelty to animals by
providing a safe haven for animals, an
effective and comprehensive adoption program, education and outreach
programs for the community and deep
and broad membership and volunteer
programs.
GEARING UP FOR NORTHERN INDIANA PET EXPO!
April is National Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month. To generate awareness of this important
cause, the Allen County SPCA will host the Northern Indiana Pet Expo. We are currently filling
up booth spaces with pet-loving companies along with shelters and rescues who will be offering
pet adoptions.
If you are looking to add a companion dog or cat to your household, this will be the largest place
to meet your match. Many of the rescues and shelters will be offering same-day adoptions with
the proper paperwork. There will be national entertainment, a kids area, exhibitors offering pet
services of all kinds and free education sessions featuring many pet-related topics.
Interested in a booth this year? Download the Exhibitor Booth form from the
Pet Expo website. Interested in putting your company’s name out in front of
thousands of community pet owners? Become a sponsor. Sponsor levels can be
found on the website as well. Next month’s newsletter will feature the Northern
Indiana Pet Expo in more detail. Visit www.northernindianapetexpo.org.

BARN CATS LOOKING FOR WORK
Former street cats that prefer to live outdoors are available for work
in exchange for food, water and shelter. These cats will happily guard
your barn or out-building from pesky mice, chipmunks, or vermin for
the small cost of a bowl of cat food and water set out daily.
Once the frigid temperatures rise a bit, we will be on the look-out
for places to send our barn cats. While we prefer cats to live in the
comfort of human homes, there are some cats that just don’t see life
that way. They enjoy hunting for food and exploring
the wild outdoors. Some of these Community
Cats are no longer welcome in their previous
neighborhoods. Unaltered cats multiply causing an
increase in unwanted feline population.
Cats in our Barn Cat Program have been
evaluated and sterilized by a licensed
veterinarian, vaccinated for rabies, and
microchipped. We simply provide the cats and initial supplies.
All you have to do is provide suitable shelter, dry food and
potable water daily. These cats will be available soon for a
small donation. Call us for more information or to setup a
time when we can deliver!
Ursula, a two-year-old black
and white female cat, and
Mocha, a five-year-old female
English Foxhound mix, are both
looking for their forever homes.
For more information on these
two and other cats and dogs
available for adoption, visit our
website at www.acspca.org,
or stop in to see us during
adoption hours.

We acknowledge those who recently passed and remembered the Allen County SPCA
in their memorials. We thank their friends and family who honored their memory with a
donation to the Allen County SPCA. Their dedication to our mission is the foundation for our
work here. Below are those we have received January 1 through January 31, 2015.
By the time you read this, the first Pawject Runway will be in the books. I want to thank
everyone who helped bring this event to the runway! The planning committee was so
dedicated to the event’s success, and they were a ton of fun! Our heartfelt gratitude goes out
to Misty Stephan, Bonnie Buell, Stephani McDowell, Kathy Minnich, Stephanie Fries, Jamie
Schueler, Sally Hamilton, Holli Rosiak, and Nikki Jasperson for all you did and all you gave
to make Pawject Runway so successful. I also want to thank our sponsors: Paw’s-N-Claw’s,
Pawsitively Pet Paradise, Richard and Diane Dunifon, Shaffer Multimedia, Pooprints NE
Indiana, LLC, Rub A Dub Dub Dog Grooming and Spa, Rogers Formalwear, A Party Apart,
St. Joe Center Veterinary Hospital, Pine Valley Veterinary Clinic, New Haven Pet Hospital,
Aboite Animal Hospital and Allen Veterinary Hospital along with our media sponsors 21Alive,
NBC33, K105, 95.1Best FM and Fun101! Lastly, thank you to all the creative groomers who
were brave enough to enter this first-time event! We could not have done this without you.
The proceeds of the event have been deposited in our Angel Fund which means we’ll be able
to provide even more critical medical care to pets in need. We can’t ask for more than that,
and we are forever grateful.

The most common pheromone product for dogs is Adaptil, DAP (Dog Appeasing Pheromone),
which mimics a comfort effect like a nursing mother that makes puppies calm. The most
common pheromone product for cats is Feliway, which mimics a cat’s facial pheromone.
When a cat rubs against you, the cat is actually marking you so the cat registers you as
a safety area. Studies have shown behaviors such as separation anxiety, destruction,
aggression, marking, house soiling, and excessive vocalization have decreased by just
adding a new pheromone in the home. Pheromones may not work in every case, but they
may be a beneficial start to try if your pet is displaying unwanted behaviors in the home.
Items big and small, we need them all! In addition to financial
donations to help our dogs and cats, we need the items below.

Pheromone therapy in dogs and cats
Just like people, dogs and cats can get stressed. Changes within the environment such as
moving to a new home, living as an unwanted cat outside, or even bringing a new pet can
cause stress. Through extensive research, pheromone therapy is being suggested to owners
to help lower stress levels for their pets. Pheromones are chemical compounds sensed in
dogs and cats by the vomeronasal organ in the back of the nose. Animals use pheromones
as a means of communication. Pheromones can come in sprays, diffusers, wipes, and even
collars. These are powerful scents for the animals, but they are odorless to humans.

BARN CATS LOOKING FOR WORK
Former street cats that prefer to live outdoors are available for work
in exchange for food, water and shelter. These cats will happily guard
your barn or out-building from pesky mice, chipmunks, or vermin for
the small cost of a bowl of cat food and water set out daily.
Once the frigid temperatures rise a bit, we will be on the look-out
for places to send our barn cats. While we prefer cats to live in the
comfort of human homes, there are some cats that just don’t see life
that way. They enjoy hunting for food and exploring
the wild outdoors. Some of these Community
Cats are no longer welcome in their previous
neighborhoods. Unaltered cats multiply causing an
increase in unwanted feline population.
Cats in our Barn Cat Program have been
evaluated and sterilized by a licensed
veterinarian, vaccinated for rabies, and
microchipped. We simply provide the cats and initial supplies.
All you have to do is provide suitable shelter, dry food and
potable water daily. These cats will be available soon for a
small donation. Call us for more information or to setup a
time when we can deliver!
Ursula, a two-year-old black
and white female cat, and
Mocha, a five-year-old female
English Foxhound mix, are both
looking for their forever homes.
For more information on these
two and other cats and dogs
available for adoption, visit our
website at www.acspca.org,
or stop in to see us during
adoption hours.
