Material Type Life Expectancy
Polyurethane (PU) Rotationally Molded
3 or more years depending on usage
Risk of discoloration /
yellowing
The risk is low if the mannequins are painted. It is high if they are not. There are
companies who will say that their product won’t yellow or is UV Stable. They can add a UV
inhibitor which will slow down the yellowing process but it can never be stopped! This was
confirmed by an independent PU engineer. The only urethane that will not discolor if
unpainted is called “Aliphatic” and it is 2-3 times the cost of the current material being
used in the industry.
Risk of Cracking /
Breakage
While generally more durable than Fiberglass, PU, due to the fact that it is rotationally
molded, can have thin spots in certain areas. This generally is not an issue because of the
capacity of impact absorption of the material, but if dropped in the right way it can crack in
these weaker areas.
Finish types / colors available
Weight Range of MQs

Production Lead-times /
range
Lead time for tools
Cost of Molds / Tooling
Other Pros or Cons of
each material
Any and all from matte to high gloss.
15 -30 lbs.
4 - 6 weeks for standard production quantities***
*** for custom molds, lead time is from the time the mold is ready for production - for stock molds
lead time is from time of PO
Standard lead-time for Tooling: 4 weeks
Low cost compared to Blow Mold and ABS - Depending on the complexity and size of the
piece the molds range from $1000-$3000.00
PROS: Low cost tooling makes this a good material for lower quantities. For higher
quantities multiple molds can be fabricated for significantly less than either blow mold
option. Hands can have separate fingers.
CONS: Because it is painted there is a risk of chipping. Small risk of breakage from dropping.
Higher per piece cost than other options. Lower production capacity than other options,
heavier than other options.

None, if painted
Very low

Lead time for tools
Standard lead-time for Tooling: 5 weeks
Cost of Molds / Tooling
Approximately $40k for full body mold
PROS: Very durable material, can be painted so no visible seam lines.
Other Pros or Cons of
each material
CONS: Because it is painted there is a risk of chipping and scuffing due to normal wear
and tear.

Polypropylene (PP)

Other Pros or Cons of
each material
CONS: Because it is painted there is a risk of chipping and scuffing due to normal wear
and tear. In our experience this risk is higher with Polypropylene than with ABS,
as the Polypropylene material has more flex than ABS materials.

Other Pros or Cons of
each material
PROS: Extremely durable, lightweight, no paint to chip, 100 percent
recyclable, can be molded in one piece for larger bodies, very high
production capacity per mold.
