August certainly seems to be the month for looking after your nearest and dearest
as we celebrate the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit and mothers everywhere in
Thailand. For our four legged loved ones there is plenty of useful advice on the looking
after of pets in this tropical climate, through to their training and transportation in and
out of the country. Read about the indigenous breeds that do well in the heat and
the good work carried out by local organisations who help with Pattaya’s stray cats
and dogs.
We also welcome our new restaurant critic Terrence Collins known to many of you
as the owner of Bravothai lifestyle company with his award winning projects The
Vineyard and Amaya Hill. A passionate “Foodie” Terrence reviews “Gaggan” in
Bangkok and Chez Yvette (on the “Darkside”) in our Dining in Detail feature.
Bon Appetit !

| COVER STORY
It’s an inescapable fact. We all have one. Whether we call her
Moeder, Madre, Matka, Eomeoni or dear old Mum … Mother’s
Day is the day on which we show our gratitude to the woman
who gave birth to us. The concept of honoring motherhood and
fertility is not exactly a new idea. In fact, it’s older than the classical civilizations of Greece and Rome. The Church of England
hijacked the concept of honoring mom in the 16th century and
called it ‘Mother Sunday’.
Puritans, seeking religious freedom didn’t bother importing the
Mothering Day tradition to North America when they first fled
England in 1620.The notion of an American mother’s day failed
to catch on until the state of West Virginia officially recognized
Mothers Day in 1912. and 2 years later, President Woodrow Wilson signed legislation proclaiming that the second Sunday in
May would henceforth be the American holiday of Mothers Day.
Thailand’s Wan Mae
To this day variations of the Mother’s Day holiday are celebrated
on different dates and in different ways in over 70 nations across
the globe. That includes the Land of Smiles, where the Thai people have their own way of celebrating Wan Mae. 1n 1950, Thailand followed suit and introduced Wan Mae as a national holiday
on April 15, 1950. From the date of its inauguration until 1975,
the on again, off again Thai holiday was celebrated on the second Sunday of the month of April. However, in 1976, government
ministers rescheduled Wan Mae to August 12
so that the holiday would coincide with Queen Sirikit’s birthday
which coincidentally also fell on August 12. Thus Mother’s Day
was combined with the Queen’s birthday because Thailand’s
reigning Queen is the symbolic mother of all Thai people.
Her Majesty the Queen Mother
From the end of July one can’t help but notice that the facades of
66
PATTAYA TRADER
many homes and businesses have been adorned with an image
of Kuhn Rajawongse Sirikit Kitiyakara. To most foreigners, that
name is not a familiar one. But Kuhn Sirikit is revered and very
well known by each and every Thai citizen as Her Majesty, Queen
Sirikit, the Queen Consort of Bhumibol Adulyadej, His Majesty
KingRama IX of Thailand. The reason for the sudden appearance
of her portrait is the Thai national holiday of Wan Mae, or Mothers
Day. It is celebrated on the Queen’s birthday, which this year, falls
on Wednesday, August 12.
Born in 1932, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit is the world’s longing
reigning royal consort. She has been the King’s constant companion and has presided over the Kingdom of Thailand for no
less than 65 years! As a young Queen, she grew in popularity due
to her beauty, poise and grace. Today she is recognized for her
decades of tireless charity work and for her efforts to improve the
quality of life in Thailand’s most rural areas. She is also renowned
for her role in single handedly reviving the Thai nation’s many
traditional arts and handicrafts.
Celebrating Wan Mae
Traditionally Thai Mother’s Day begins with the offering of alms to
monks at a local temple and then praying for the health and prosperity of both your mother and the Queen Mother. The traditional
Mother’s day gift in Thailand is the Dòk Má-lí or the Jasmine flower as it represents purity, gentleness, and motherhood. Today
Mother’s Day gifts include everything from humble heartfelt wishes expressing respect, love, and gratitude to designer handbags
and expensive jewelry. After temple and the presentation of gifts,
family activities ensue and mom’s favorite foods are cheerfully
consumed. The evening meal is often followed by a candle lighting ceremony and a lively fireworks display concludes the festivities in many areas. Out of respect for Her Majesty, most venues
across Thailand will not be serving or selling alcohol.

By Brian S.
Over the centuries, the creature we know as a dog
has become more acutely attuned to the emotions of
humans than any other species of domesticated animal. Whilst most dog enthusiasts are well aware of
the many benefits of sharing one’s life with a canine
companion, many are unaware of health advantages
that go hand in hand with the human-animal bond.
Studies have shown that the dog ownership is directly
linked to:
• Reducing the risk of depression
• Lowering blood pressure levels
• Elevating serotonin and dopamine levels, both of
which are known to calm and relax
• Lowering the risk of a heart attack
• 30 per cent fewer visits to a doctor for pet owners
over the age of 65
Thailand & Dogs
The word in Thailand for a dog is “Maa”. Despite the
fact that there are so many stray dogs living rough on
the streets that divide and split the Land of Smiles,
Thailand is actually a very pet friendly nation. Most
Thais extend the same affection to their domestic
dogs as Westerners do. However in general Thai people believe that it is far crueler to collect, cage, and euthanize homeless animals for the transgression of not
having a caretaker. The Buddhist philosophy that so
many Thais hold dear, dictates that it’s better for one’s
karma to simply let them live peacefully on the streets.
Although the majority of wayward dogs are left to
fend for themselves, many are kindly fed leftovers by
non-owners and shopkeepers. Others are attended to
by monks at a local temple, making it the nearest thing
to an animal inn or dog hotel. In addition, there are also
a number of foreign and Thai operated animal shelters
all doing good work in regard to providing shelter, sustenance, medical attention, and ultimately, a friendly
long-term home for as many soi dogs as possible.
Thai Breeds
If you are seeking a furry friend and already reside within the Kingdom of Thailand, it’s recommended that a dog native to Siam be
selected. Thai breeds, of which there are but two (not counting mongrels), are considered best as they are already acclimated to the
climate and when taken care of, are much better suited to a life in the tropics. The Thai Ridgeback or Maa Thai Lang An, is so named
because of the bristly ridge of hair that runs the length of its back. Curiously, the ridge points in the opposing direction to which the
rest of the animal’s very short, smooth coat faces. The Thai Ridgeback is a muscular and medium sized animal. This very agile dog’s
other characteristics include sharp ears and a wrinkled brow on its wedge shaped head. Its coat colors include blue, black, redbrown, fawn and white. The Ridgeback is considered to be loyal, highly intelligent, energetic, and it makes a great family pet when
properly socialized. It’s naturally protective instincts also make the Thai Ridgeback one of; if not the best watchdogs one can keep.
Because the Ridgeback can be somewhat strong minded, and it retains a great deal of if its natural hunting ability, this breed is not
recommended for a first time dog owner.
The other dog thought to be native to Thailand is the Bangkaew Dog or Maa Thai Bang-Kaew. Medium of build and slightly square in
profile, the Bangkaew’s appearance is similar to that of the Spitz or an Akita. The dogs covering consists of a double coat of under
and outer fur that grows longer as it approaches the back, chest and neck, forming a lion-like ruff that is primarily white with patches
of red, gray, brown or black placed in a wide variety of patterns. Other distinguishing features include erect triangular ears and a tail
that curls up and over its back. Like the Ridgeback, the Bangkaew is intelligent, athletic, alert and very protective. As such, it makes
an excellent guardian or watchdog. When properly socialized the Bangkaew is not aggressive, but it can appear so when in the presence of strangers or other dogs. The animal’s dominant and headstrong nature definitely requires the firm hand of an experienced
dog owner.
Importing the Family Pet
If you are relocating to Thailand it is possible to import the family dog. To do so, one needs to obtain an “Identity and Health Certificate” in the country from the nation of origin, and it must be compiled and signed by a registered veterinarian before arriving in Bang-
22
22

Issue 178 | AUGUST 2015
kok. In addition, the animal will need to be vaccinated for Rabies
15 days before departure, as well as for Leptospirosis, Hepatitis,
and Parvovirus 21 days before departure. Valid health and vaccination certificates for all of the above must be presented upon
arrival in Thailand. After which, the dog will be quarantined for
a minimum of 30 days for observation and testing for disease if
any symptoms are present during the quarantine. Prior to making any travel plans it’s recommended that you check with your
local veterinarian as well as the Thai Embassy in your country to
ensure that you are fully apprised of all pertinent local and international regulations and requirements.
Health & Safety
In regard to a dog’s health most of the same rules from the animal’s home country apply in the tropics. Make sure your pet’s
vaccinations are always up to date, especially Rabies as that
disease is very common in Thailand. It is carried by rats, bats
and stray soi dogs, as well as a host of other small animals.
Bathe your dog at regular intervals with a medicated pet shampoo to rid the skin of ticks and other parasites, all of which thrive
in the tropics. Pay particular attention to the animal’s ears in order to prevent ear infections, which can be fairly commonplace.
There have been reports of dogs dying after being bitten by venomous snakes or eaten by pythons, but the odds of that actually
happening are slim. There are plenty of Thai veterinarian clinics
around town, but finding a good one is sometimes difficult.
Keeping Cool
Unlike humans a dog’s body temperature cannot be cooled
down by a light breeze evaporating perspiration, because a
dog doesn’t sweat. Since a dog’s only means of cooling down
is panting, it will heat up much faster than its two legged master during any sort of physical exertion. Dog doctors claim that
an adult dog’s normal body temperature is 38.9C. Brain damage occurs when the body temperature rises to 41C, and death
occurs at approximately 42C. What this means to the average
Pattaya pet owner is that if your pooch overexerts itself under a
withering tropical sun it could become seriously dehydrated. This
in turn, can lead to heat exhaustion or worse, heatstroke, both of
which can be potentially fatal if ignored or left untreated.
Like all other maladies, prevention is the best medicine. Therefore, don’t leave your dog in a parked car. A car, even under the
shade and with the windows wide open, can reach temperatures
of 66C in no time. Likewise, never leave your dog outdoors without a source of shade and plenty of fresh water to drink. Avoid
exercising your dog when the sun is at or near its zenith. Instead,
do so early in the morning or evening when temperatures are
several degrees cooler. You may also want to invest in a canine
‘cooling vest’ or ‘cool bed’. Another easy solution is a ‘cool collar’ made from a tube of durable fabric that’s large enough to fit
ice cubes into. When worn around a dog’s neck the melting ice
seeps through the material and cools down the animal’s chest
and neck. If fabric, a buckle, and instructions are provided, one
of Pattaya’s sidewalk seamstresses can stitch one together for a
few baht while you wait.
In the tropics, it may seem logical to shave or give a long haired
dog a buzz cut, but it isn’t. Mother Nature is way smarter than
we are and a dog’s top or ‘guard’ coat is there for a reason.
Unless it’s matted, the top coat allows excess body heat to escape whilst deflecting the sun’s harmful rays – thus preventing
the sun’s heat from reaching the skin. Believe it or not it actually
keeps the dog cooler! When shorn or shaved the animal is exposed to the full force of the sun’s ferocity. And that’s never a
good thing.
Exporting the Family Pet
If you’ve acquired a pet during your stay in Thailand and wish to
take it back to your home country, you must begin preparations
www.pattayatrader.com
for international pet travel early. Thai law requires that you obtain an “International Health Certificate” and an “Export License”
from the Thai Department of Livestock Development before departing. It is also vital that you contact the consulate or embassy
of the country of the pet’s ultimate destination to ascertain its
regulation in regard to importing an animal from Thailand.
In addition, to a properly filled out pet import form , many Western countries require that pets be microchipped, have an appropriate microchip card, health certificate, as well as proof that the
pet has received up to date booster vaccinations, and a booklet
in which all of the appropriate official Thai stamps and signatures
indicating this to be so are present. Depending on the country,
you might also be required to present a blood test confirming
that the animal does not have Rabies. Often nations will only
accept the results of a blood test conducted in a laboratory approved by the country of import. Because the rules and regulations governing the import of pets vary from nation to nation, it’s
imperative to contact the authorities of the country of import and
export before making any travel arrangements.
Air Travel
If your international travel plans include the family pet, after first
obtaining all of the necessary documentation and dealing with
the airlines, you’ll need to prepare your pet for travel. You may
need a transport box that meets International Air Transportation
Association (IATA) requirements, an airline approved water feeder, and some absorbent puppy pads. Make sure that the size of
the travel crate is appropriate for your dog and that it’s ventilated
properly on all sides. Begin training your dog well in advance
of the departure date to accustom it to being inside the crate.
Situate the crate where the dog normally sleeps and place the
dog’s favorite blanket or toys inside along with some treats. The
dog should be allowed to enter of its own free will and gradually
increase the length of time it spends inside. The day before travel, bathe and groom your dog, and carefully check for fleas and
ticks. For obvious reasons, keep the dog’s final feeding small.
Place a puppy pad in the bottom of the crate and cover that with
the dog’s favorite blanket or pillow. If you include one of your
unwashed t-shirts, its scent will provide a small measure of additional comfort during the journey. Remove the wheels, install the
water feeder, and then leave a small amount of food and a sensibly sized rawhide chew. Make sure the door is securely locked
and your pet is good to go.

| TRAVEL & ATTRACTIONS
By John Borthwick
English is a Sworn Language:
The Night Train to Chiang Mai
Ride the rails from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, Thailand’s most
popular — and best fun — train journey.
Train travel. Suspended in the rocking, rattling belly of the iron
beast, with Thailand scrolling past your window — bridges,
backyards, paddies, hills and the clang of level-crossing bells
— there’s nothing like it.
I want to go to Chiang Mai. I could fly cheaply — no frills-no
thrills class — or take the bus, but it’s been years since I’ve
done the 750 km journey on the rattler, so I head to Bangkok’s
Hualamphong station.
Its grand, Italianate iron hoop of a roof (one hundred years
old now), one of Rama V’s projects to modernise Siam, arcs
above the waiting hall and platforms. Below it, hundreds of
Thais patiently await (while snacking constantly) their rot fai
departures to all points of the Kingdom’s compass from Nong
Khai to Hat Yai.
And there’s my ride — Special Express 13, the famous night
train to Chiang Mai — ready to rock. (Quite literally so, on
Thailand’s narrow-gauge line). I’m travelling in the popular,
air-conditioned second class; my reserved sleeper seat is in
a compartment with two upper and lower bunks. At 19.45 we
pull out of Hualamphong, just slightly behind schedule.
As I look down the corridor, I see mostly foreign faces,
including tourist families with kids. My fellow passengers in the
compartment are a polite, mid-30’s Swedish couple — Victor
and Inge — and a Thai man, Lek. He has the upper bunk,
while I’ve paid a little more (at 881 baht) for the lower one. Two
Danish friends join the Swedes and they settle in for a game of
poker on the lower bunk.
There’s plenty of laughter and banter swapped in a transScandy mash-up of Svensk-Dansk. But every now and
then, on a bum card, someone yelps in distinct English, “Oh,
28
28
PATTAYA TRADER
Issue 178 | AUGUST 2015
TRAVEL & ATTRACTIONS
#@$%&*-it!” Or similar. “Why do you speak
in Swedish-Danish but swear in English?”
I ask, amused. Victor explains, “We have
young children and we don’t want them
to learn swearing, so by habit we do it in
English, which they don’t yet understand.”
And why not — Chinese as a shouted
language, English as a sworn language?
Before boarding I enquired if the train had a
restaurant car? No. So I load up on snack
food and drinks. Just to be sure, once on
board I ask again. “No restaurant. But you
can order dinner and breakfast served in
your compartment,” is the answer.
We roll north past Don Mueang and
Ayutthaya, and begin our serious trundle
through rural Thailand. An impressively decorated inspector in military uniform checks our tickets, followed by the catering staff who
take our meal orders from a set menu. My vegetarian choice (190 baht) turns out to be filling but bland: “Monk food, I think,” jokes
Lek. “No spices, no meat, no fun.”
“And we can’t smoke or drink on Thai trains anymore,” he adds, “So I think I’ll go to the restaurant.” “The restaurant! Where?” I blurt.
He explains that there is certainly a restaurant car but the caterers often stay silent on its existence or at least its whereabouts —
“Because maybe they make more on selling the delivered meals?”
Our carriage, an ex-Japan Railways vehicle, is tired but clean, and has toilets and a washroom at the end of the car. Around 9 pm a
Railways of Thailand attendant makes up our bunks with a mattress, pillow, fresh sheets and blanket. It has long been dark outside
and Thailand’s temples, jungles and plains now slide by unnoticed, along with towns like Lopburi and Nakhon Sawan.
The poker game reaches its happy, expletive undeleted conclusion; we’ve all swapped travel tales; Lek has returned, having found
not only the restaurant but also, somehow, a brief dose of fun with nicotine and alcohol. I’ve read a chapter, written a diary page and
edited my photos. The restaurant is closed (with the staff now asleep on the tables). There’s only one thing left to do.
I stretch out to sleep, mentally ticking off trainspotter songs ... Love In Vain, Mystery Train, City of New Orleans and an obscure
Kingston Trio number, Fast Freight ... Clickety clack, clickety clack, the wheels are saying to the railroad track / Well, if you go, you
can't come back, if you go, you can't come back ...
Morning breaks with sunlight on the savannah and the temple cheddis of Den Chai. We make a long stop at Lampang where a
handsome, painted statue of a rooster stands on the platform looking in our window.
We glide on, with teak forests, rivers and tapioca fields flickering
past, and the blue ranges of northern Thailand rising in the
distance. Breakfast (a much tastier omelette) has come and gone
by Lamphun, and with Chiang Mai soon on the horizon — we’re
running ten minutes early — we scramble to pack and bid our
farewells.
A gauntlet of eager taxis and trishaws awaits us. From the
platform I take a look back to see what kind of humanity our
train has carried. It could be re-named the Farang Express. The
passengers are predominantly foreign, both Western and Asian
— backpackers, budget travellers, adventurers, families, all keen
to see “the real Thailand” and to meet real Thais. Ironically, the
Thais mostly seem to have taken the plane or the bus.
Train Travel Tips
- There are eight Bangkok-Chiang Mai departures daily, of
different durations, price and classes.
- Book in advance if possible, especially if travelling near
public holidays, at a station or through an agent (who will
add a fee).
- Go for the lower bunk; the upper is slightly smaller and,
near the A/C vent, is colder.
- Prefer a compartment in the middle of the carriage.

STRAY ANIMALS AND SOI DOGS
There are just so many stray dogs in Thailand and Pattaya is no exception.
According to Pattaya City Hall there are over 10 000 stray dogs here with more
arriving every day as most of them will breed twice a year if not sterilized.
make sure your dogs have all been vaccinated
before you walk them
Many stray dogs are sick with diseases such as Distemper and Parvo virus so
make sure your dogs have all been vaccinated before you walk them. Distemper
is spread by the wind or breathing, so only a sniff can infect you dog if it is not
vaccinated and there is no real cure for both these diseases - you can only hope
and pray.
There are many great charities helping with stray animals such as:
FACEBOOK Goh-m Buddhabless
(Telephone M Buddha Bless 083-990-3444)
Often they find that they can re-house pedigree dogs pretty quickly as people like
to pick up a pedigree dog for free but of course the stray mongrels are harder to
find homes for. Unfortunately when people suffer from economic hardship they
“opt out” of looking after their pets and leave them around Pattaya for someone
else to “take care of” Or the dogs are just old and sick and the owner does not
want to pay the bills - rather preferring to get a new dog. It’s like getting a new car
and much more fun to play with - why care about the old one?
Anyone who wants to

Anyone who wants to spay and neuter
a dog or cat can do it for a fix price of
2000 thb by mentioning PAC PATTAYA
TRADER However please ensure that
you are able to touch the animal so
that it can be safely brought to the vet.
The clinic can also pick up a dog or cat
anywhere in the Greater Pattaya area
for a very small fee.
The 2000 thb price includes the cost
of sterilisation, the vet’s treatment and
a stay in the clinic for the animal for 8
days recovery .To bring an animal in
for this procedure please make sure
that it has been fully vaccinated and is
healthy because animals can often get
sick when being brought into a strange
environment. Also please, no pregnant
animals - no clinic in Thailand will allow
for sterilisation of a pregnant animal..
However a new animal law that most people do not know of but is soon to be
enforced, carries a sentence of 2 years in prison and/or a 20,000 thb fine for
dumping a pet - and the same goes for any other animal cruelty against pets.
Pattaya Animal Coalition is working with Watchdog Thailand on Eastern Seaboard
to catch and bring to justice a few cases per month of people abusing dogs. Also
Pattaya Animal Coalition is helping around 1500 dogs and cats in two different
shelters on the outskirts of Pattaya, but please do not contact them to take in any
more as they have no space left. Often Pattaya City police catch dogs and bring
them to the shelters but in future the goal would be to have them neutered and
spayed to avoid further animal suffering.

Dog Training
my life (and not just with dog training).
An online dog training course …….Designed
for people who want a better relationship
with their dog but are uncertain as to how to
achieve it.
Rebecca Roper is a paid consultant to the
SPCA. Her on-line training course has been
endorsed by the Association of Pet Dog
Trainers of New Zealand. She is also a full
member Pet Professional Guild.
When I was introduced to dog training 17 yrs ago it was very
much based on antiquated militaristic methods. Choker
chains, shock collars, forcing submission (and worse) were
all used to get our ‘best friend’ to behave. For some reason,
humans think they need to dominate other species and bandy
about names like ‘Alpha Dog’ or ‘Pack Leader’. Unfortunately,
the dogs who ‘submit’ to their owner are actually fearful
or anxious. They are afraid of the consequences of doing
something their owner deems inappropriate. As a result, they
just stop trying. It’s a sad sight to see.
This is why I’ve created an online dog training course so I
can show others how to train with positive reinforcement.
Designed for people who want a better relationship with their
dog but are uncertain as to how to achieve it. It’s for those
who can’t attend a training course but want professional help
and is easy to follow while still challenging you to understand
your dog better. - Plus it’s very affordable!
It may seem quicker to get a “Sit” by pushing your dog’s
bottom down, or pull their lead towards you to get them to
“Come” but what are they really learning? Did they choose
to sit, or to come to you? No.What happens to your recall
if your dog is not on a lead? Will your dog make the wrong
choice and ignore you? Do you then go after your dog and
punish him for not coming? Using force and physical or
verbal punishment is not training. In fact, the more forceful
you are with your dog the more fearful he will most likely
become and even aggressive. Fear aggression is the main
type of all canine aggression.
Rather than trying to rule over our dogs, why don’t we think
about teamwork? If we can give them clear direction and
great motivation they will work very hard for us. I’ve been
competing in dog sports for 15 years and it’s very apparent
just how rewarding great teamwork can be. I love seeing my
dogs perform well but mostly, I enjoy the bond with my dogs.
Dogs are extremely intelligent creatures. Understanding your
dog will help with better communication, it will build a great
relationship and a lifelong bond.
I’m a ‘crossover trainer’. That is someone who started out
using ‘old-school, dominance based training’ and then
changed to positive reinforcement, force free methods.I was
never that keen on using force and felt early on that there
must be a better way of training. I’ve been a force free trainer
for nearly 12 years after learning clicker training first hand
from a world renowned clicker expert (Kay Laurence U.K.).
Dogs (or any animal) will learn longer-lasting behaviour
through positive reinforcement. It made a huge impact on
If your dog really, truly understands the basic behavioural
cues (sit, down, stay, heel and come) then a lot of behavioural
problems go away. It’s also important to teach your dog
impulse control. Yes, this can be taught and my course can
show you how.
As a trainer for my local SPCA I see a variety of dogs with a
range of issues and behavioural problems. They come with
little or no history so it’s important that choice and rewards
are used to build their trust. It never ceases to amaze me how
quickly dogs learn with the opportunity to have a choice, and
how quickly they learn with positive reinforcement.

| LOCATION SPOTLIGHT
By Rhiannon Caldwell
Welcome Town is a new shopping complex just off Pattaya Klang Road, directly behind the Index Living Mall, a diverse shopping
center with an array of products and services. Amongst these are a few bakeries that open as early as 9:00 am but mostly everything
opens up around 11:00 am and then stays open until 9:00 or 10:00 in the evening. On Saturdays, and Sundays for special events
there is also an outdoor market space available, as well as a stage for live performances.
The Hippie Festival was recently held at Welcome Town and the market made of bamboo tents, and the stage made of the same
material was put to great use. The stalls here being able to accommodate many different types of items and with specialty vendors
during such events.
A Pet a Long Way from Home
Some noteable unique businesses that reside in Welcome town are The Cat Cafe and The Party Shop. The Cat Cafe is a delightful
cafe serving coffee, milk, and bakery items. What makes it special
are the feline friends that you will meet inside. There are resident cats
at the Cat Cafe that are friendly and socialized, and there are places
for the furballs to play. If you are a perpetual traveller you know just
how hard it is to have a pet. Just because we travel does not mean
we don’t love animals. The Cat Cafe provides kitties for playing and
petting to people that may not have any other opportunity to spend
time with animals. Grab your favorite cuppa joe and pet a cat at the
Cat Cafe.
Quick! Distract the Children!
The Party Shop relocated recently to Welcome Town. Here you will be
able to find a wide variety of costumes and accessories for playing
dress up, school productions, Halloween, costume parties and just for
no reason at all. There are also party favors and little goodies.
Right next door is Kids Castle with an indoor, outdoor play area.
Having these types of kid friendly activities venues make it easier
when you are having to handle adult business, such as visiting the real
estate agent Colliers International have a branch here. Or you might be
renting a mailbox from Siam Secure Box Rental or looking at the latest
CCTV for home security at the security camera shop. For those chores
that have to be done but can take a lot of time, having entertainment
options nearby can make those days so much easier.
If you have older kids, there is a also a place called Nads which is a
gaming store, with accessories for video games and right next door to
that is an internet cafe. Two more alternatives for killing time when you
have the teenagers in tow and are trying to get things done.
Retail Therapy
For beach bunnies there is a fabulous little bathing suit shop
where you can buy a custom suit by purchasing tops and bottoms
separately. There are also cute beach accessories, cover ups etc.
The colors in the shop just jump right out at you and the selection is
vast. Purli Bikini is definitely on my list of places to check out when
it’s time to buy another new bathing suit.

For motorcycle maniacs there is Road Runner Accessories. They
sell endless accessories to modify big bikes like Ducati. Upgrade
the exhaust, change the handlebars, or get a new set of wheels. Or
simply check out the modded bikes they have in their showroom.
From novice to expert these bikes will have something to impress
anyone.
Health & Beauty
It is quite easy to make a day out of Welcome Town, If all the
shopping just gets too much one can always go for a massage.
Choose from either Thai, Foot, or Oil and pay only 200-300 baht.
Her Massage is clean and the therapists are skilled. Nothing funny
going on in this place just nice relaxing massage therapy.
Sis Style is a full service hair salon, offering everything from cut,
and blowdry, to color and styling services. There is Mira Clinic for
hair and skin, and Aman which is a place specializing in Clean
Food, and Lean Food. That movement is running strong, high
protien and vegetables and very low carbs.
There are a handful of places to grab a bite to eat. From bakeries with pies and croissants, to a Thai pub, or Japanese barbecue.
There are quite a few choices. The Borbaimai Cafe & Bakery, Tres Bon Cafe, Loaf Bakery & Cafe, and of course the aforementioned
Cat Cafe. For late night eats Koko Shabu BBQ, the Thai Pub, or Usagi Japanese food.
I saw some oddities that I did not investigate too deeply. Such as one shop was filled with bales of hay haphazardly stacked in what
could have been some kind of order. The stage looks to have eroded underneath, not sure what that is about but I get the feeling
there may be lights underneath. The little market stalls also provide late night food some nights of the week. They are tastefully done
with uniform white roofs and bamboo framing with two teepee style tents near to the center.
Overall Welcome Town is friendly for families, couple, and singles, there is a little something for everyone there. There are quite a few
things that are necessary mixed in with pure entertainment. The staff that I encountered had a pretty high level of English, and I was
greeted with no Russian as I am sometimes mistaken for a Russian but when I answer back in Thai with a heavy American accent
there is usually a laugh.

AUGUST BARGAIN HUNTER ARTICLE
Welcome to Pattaya Bargain Hunter, my name is Belinda and before living in Pattaya I was a buyer in London’s West End. An
important part of my job was to look out for items of quality, value and with that certain special something. Now I look out for
bargains in and around Pattaya to share with you. If you see any bargains around town that you would like to share let me know
at [email protected] and I will be happy to go check them out for inclusion on my page.
Since living in Thailand I no longer feel the need to rush to the
shops for the “First Day of Sale”. The queue around the block for
the Harrods January sale is a distant memory and the need to be
the first to get the one off designer special no longer such a “need”.
Don’t get me wrong there is still plenty of good shopping to be
found in Pattaya and Bangkok but due to the lack of seasonal
variations in our climate it kind of takes the pressure off when
buying clothes over here. That’s why I prefer rummaging round in
August when the Final reductions and Final sale rails are out in
the stores. “Guess” for example in both Central Festival and Royal
Garden will start with 30% off signs and then go through to 70%
which on a recent purchase of a really unique jacket goes a long
way from the original price of 7,990 baht to 2,397. Likewise a great
handbag or purse doesn’t have to be picke. d up during full price
season – unless it’s a “must have” impulse or occasion purchase. Far better to wait for the absolute best possible price . The
same with shoes where often it’s the larger /non Thai sizes that are left at the end of the Sale. Yes August is a great for mopping
up the best of the sales and in Central the other day I even saw my first 80% off and when the shops finally declare “Buy one
Sale item get another Free” – Well that’s just like taking “candy from a baby”!
I also think this year has been particularly good for finding home wares and interior design bargains – maybe it’s a knock on
effect from the fall in condo sales around town but fewer home purchases = fewer homewares purchases = great bargains for
those of us already here and cruising the many stores around town. Again there is a great opportunity for rummaging in the
“bins” often at the front of the stores or at the end of gondolas. However be warned when the lure of the excellent discount is
great it’s always important to ask yourself “Do I really need this?” “Do I have
space/ as place for this” when I bring it back to my home and even as we can
all be repeat purchase shoppers “Have I already got something quite similar
already”?
Mother’s Day at The Hilton
If you are celebrating Mother’s Day in Thailand the Hilton Pattaya is organising

The Edge restaurant on the 14th floor overlooks Pattaya bay and offers a
wide selection of dishes where guests can look forward to chilled and grilled
seafood, salad bars and live cooking stations with Western and Asian dishes.
In the evening, you can also savor an array of imported meats and seafood,
such as oysters, prawn, lobster, and beef sirloin. Available from 6 p.m. to
10.30 p.m. at 1,200 Baht per person.
The Viper Bar – Bottom of Soi 4 Pratumnak opposite
Asia Pattaya Hotel

Teaching English - Exams
students’ level, as then you’ll largely be testing their reading
skills, which isn’t what you’d planned on. They aren’t perfect;
you are effectively giving the answer rather than seeing if students can come up with it but they are popular.
Gap-fill
Similar to multiple-choice but without any options, the only
real obstacle is being aware of more than one possible answer. Students shouldn’t miss out on a point just because
they’ve come up with an answer you hadn’t anticipated. This
is a good way to check tenses as, if you’re feeling generous,
you can give the base form of the verb in brackets as a clue
(1). If there’s only one possible answer, try to leave it out (2).
Example 1: Yesterday, James ___________ a new car (buy)
Example 2: He _________ gone to Bangkok.
Types of Tests
Checking that students actually understand what you’re
teaching them is an important part of the job. There are all
kinds of ways to do this (speaking tests, project work), but
the overwhelming favourite is by written exam.
Schools like such exams as they’re simple to mark and easy
to grade. Tests rarely give you a completely accurate guide
of what a student can do, but they’re not a bad benchmark.
Remember that just because a student scores high or low,
they aren’t necessarily good or bad at English. Some students prefer the tension of an exam (and knowing you’re facing one does tend to lead to more revision), while others may
be able to communicate well but freeze when faced with an
academic test. Either way, sooner or later (probably sooner)
you’ll be asked to write such a test.
There are several ‘musts’ when it comes to creating an exam.
Firstly, only test students on what they are expected to know.
A school once gave students an English test showing Big
Ben, the White House, the Statue of Liberty and the Pyramids. The question asked which one of these was in Egypt.
Now that would be great for a general knowledge test, but it
doesn’t actually test the students’ English ability.
Matching
Students are given two groups of words or sentences and
have to put them together. This could be a simple vocabulary
test (apple/banana, cow/pig) or it could be used for far more
complex patterns.
Example:
a) She is interested 1) of spiders
b) Gary is frightened
2) in the supernatural
Transformation
You give students a sentence and they then have to change
it based on given instructions.
Example 1: Is the giraffe on the left or right _________ (tall,
comparative)?
Example 2: If it’s sunny at the weekend I _______ the park
(First Conditional)
Comprehension questions
After a reading passage or listening exercise, students are
asked questions to check understanding. Think about whether you want closed questions that are simple to mark or ones
that invite a more open answer.
Secondly, think about what kind of questions you want.
Some formats are easy to produce but don’t fully test students, while others are tricky to make but simple to mark.
Thirdly, bear in mind how long the test will last. If you create the perfect 200-question exam but only give students 30
minutes to complete it, you’re not going to get a true picture
of what your class can do. Similarly, if your test includes a
large text that needs to be read, that’s going to eat up a considerable amount of time too. For exams, it’s better to have
several easy-to-digest chunks of comprehension texts rather
than one long one.
Lastly, consider how you’re going to mark the test. If there
are open questions, then you’ll need to come up with some
marking scheme. Or if some questions are far easier or less
complex than others, you may need to weight the marks.
These are the main ways of testing students (if you want to
impress your boss, refer to them as elicitation techniques).
Multiple choice questions
These are popular as they are easy to mark, something worth
considering if you have 500 or so students to test. Multiple-choice tests sound simple enough, but you need to be
sure there is only one possible answer. It’s also worth checking that you haven’t made the question too complex for the

Part of the IB Learner Profile is that we are ‘Caring’ and ‘Principled’; though our

our students have organised as fun and enjoyable activities for each other, but with
an underlying cause – to help others.

seeds over the cream, and garnish with a fresh sliver of mango.
Phulay Sunset
When one imagines paradise, the sun sinking into exotically beautiful
Phulay Bay in the luxury resort town of Krabi, Thailand is as apt a
match as one could hope for. Therefore, if tart and tasty with a trace
of gingery spice is what tantalizes your taste buds, this cocktail, who’s
very name is synonymous with paradise, will more than suffice.
Traditionally, the Thai population celebrates its national holidays
and other important events over a few bottles of Thai beer or a
shared bottle of Sangsom – Thailand’s brown sugarcane rum
that is colloquially known as “Thai whiskey”. As far as a cocktail
goes here in the Land of Smiles, Sangsom and Nám Soh-daa
(soda water) or Sangsom and Coke is about as audacious as any
mixed drink ever gets for the majority of Thai drinkers. Despite
Thailand’s burgeoning wine industry, when asked which wines
goes best with Thailand’s famous cuisine, one of Siam’s most
notable chefs’ curtly retorted that, “No wine goes with Thai food.”
In the absence of a world class Chonburi Chardonnay or a premium
Phuket Pinot Noir all one is left with is Chang Beiyr, (Elephant Beer)
Siam’s national brew or the aforementioned Sangsom Thai whiskey.
Because both of these beverages lack the stature necessary to stand
tall on a world stage, Thailand has literally been left scratching in the
grit in regard to having a world famous cocktail that it can call its
own. If you doubt this to be factual, just venture into a bar located
anywhere in the world that isn’t Thailand and order a Sangsom and
Nám Soh-daa. I’ll wager that the only thing you get in return for your
most earnest effort is an odd look form the staff. However, if you
were to repeat the procedure and order say, a Singapore Sling, White
Russian, Blue Hawaii, or Long Island Ice Tea, your order will likely be
cheerfully filled with alacrity, and without any questioning glances.
Thankfully, the craze devoted to creating colorful cocktails to
compliment a particular cuisine that’s currently sweeping the
planet has sparked an interest amongst nationalistic bartenders and
mixologists. To rectify Thailand’s need for a truly Thai adult beverage,
indigenous cocktail chemists have more than risen to the challenge.
They’ve combined traditional Thai flavors with spirits imported from
the Western world. To their credit, several Siamese themed cocktails
were carefully crafted, any of which, with a bit of luck, could take the
global spirits scene by storm. A few of the contenders vying for the
title of being Thailand’s number one “Totally Thai” cocktail are:
Mango Sticky Rice
If your desire is to imbibe something sinfully sweet with an ever
so gentle kick, this refreshingly fruity cocktail inspired by what is
arguably Thailand’s favorite dessert will meet, if not exceed your
wildest expectations. Be advised that this drink is so good that
you may find yourself later explaining, “But officer, I only had one
drink … err, ahhh … twenty times.”
2 oz. Rice Vodka
2 oz. Malibu Rum
1 oz. Vanilla Syrup
1/2 Whole Fresh Mango
1/2 oz. Fresh Lime Juice
Pinch of Black Sesame Seeds for Garnish
Coconut Cream for Garnish
Begin by setting one of the fresh mango slices aside to use as a garnish.
Then using a blender, blend the first five ingredients until smooth.
Upon completion, pour the results into a martini glass and top with a
splash or two of coconut cream. Then drizzle a smattering of sesame

PATTAYA TRADER
3 oz. Vodka
2 oz. Orange Juice
2 oz. Coconut Cream
Old Ginger to Taste
4 gm. Fresh Orange, pureed
2 gm. Fresh Pineapple, pureed
1 oz. Fresh Lime Juice
1 oz. Simple Syrup
Orange/Pineapple Wedge for Garnish
Muddle (which is bartender speak for lightly mashing something
in the bottom of a glass) the ginger in a glass. Mix the remaining
ingredients separately, and then thoroughly stir in the ginger. Strain
the combined components into a champagne flute and garnish with a
fresh orange or pineapple wedge.
Thai Basil Mojito
The Cuban cocktail, Mojito is said to have been devised in the 16th
century from a native Caribbean Indian remedy that was used to
combat any number of tropical maladies. This ancient medicine
was comprised of a crude form of rum that was literally called “fire
water” by the Indians. The medicinal concoction was a combination
of the fire water with sugar cane juice, lime juice and mint … which
as it happens, are all flavors that perfectly compliment the signature
flavors of Thai cuisine. By substituting palm sugar for cane sugar
and slipping some fresh Thai basil into the recipe, any bartender
can give this modern day tropical treat a distinctly Thai twist.
1 ½ oz. White Rum
3/4 oz. Fresh Lime Juice
1/2 oz. Palm Sugar
Soda Water to Suit
1.5 Fresh Mint Leafs
1.5 Fresh Thai basil Leafs
Muddle the mint and Thai basil leaves in a rock glass just enough
to release their aromatic oils. Next, add the required amount
of rum, lime juice and palm sugar, and mix thoroughly. Fill the
glasses remaining space glass to the brim with ice and soda water,
give the whole a quick stir and it’s bottoms up.
Tom Yam Siam
Nothing says Thailand more than its signature dish of Tom Yam.
The fragrance and flavors that the lemon grass and kaffir lime
leafs impart is what makes this clear soup decidedly delicious.
In case you were wondering, those herbs also blend extremely
well with the sweetness of the locally grown tropical lychee fruit,
and the coconut essence already within the Malibu Rum, both of
which are key components of this Asian aperitif.
2 oz. Vodka
1oz. Malibu Rum
3/4 oz. Simple Syrup
1/2 oz. Lime Juice
3 pieces of Lychee, canned in syrup
3 pieces of Lemongrass
1 piece of Kaffir Lime Leaf
3 thin slices of Red Chili Pepper
Combine the first five ingredients, and pour over ice into a
rock glass. Before serving, garnish the beverage with slivers of
lemongrass and kaffir lime leafs, along with enough fresh red chili
pepper slices to achieve the proper amount of heat that you or
your fellow drinkers desire.

Gaggan, voted best the restaurant in Asia, will leave you Gagging for more !
I was not surprised to read that one of my favorite restaurants
in Bangkok: Gaggan had been awarded the “Top Spot”,
coming first in “Asia’s Top 50 Restaurants” list and voted
10th best restaurant in the whole world at the “San Pellegrino
World’s Best Restaurant Awards” held in London earlier this
year.
The 37 year old owner and head chef: Gaggan Anand who
trained at the famous Ferran Adria’s Michelin star restaurant
El Bulli in Spain, has created a workspace that can only be
described as more of a science lab than a kitchen. Molecular
cooking is the name of the game at this restaurant.
With 22 chefs and 18 “front of house” hosting a maximum
of 60 covers per night and creating what I like to describe as
“Showtime Theatre”, there are so many twists & surprises,
you simply cannot describe your evening here as just “Going
out for dinner”. Definitely not the norm, this restaurant should
be enjoyed with friends “who love food” or “foodies” as we
like to be called and certainly reserved for special occasions.
Living in Bangkok or Pattaya how lucky we are to have the
best restaurant in Asia (10th in the entire world) right here on
our doorstep and you don’t even have to be a fan of Indian
food to eat here. This is not your “Chicken Madras and five
pints of lager joint” the chefs are constantly changing the
menu to ensure you are always surprised by their newest
creations.
The restaurant itself is very cozy in what I would describe as
“quaint wooden Thai house style” with a colonial feel and the
option of dining upstairs or downstairs. The bright and cheery
atmosphere is important, as you really eat with your eyes first
in this establishment.

OK now to the food, we all opted for the 17 course tasting
menu - don’t worry the portions are small but its crazy to think
some dishes take 24 hours to prepare and are gone in just
60 seconds! We started with a trio of taste ticklers (amuse
bouche) consisting of white chocolate balls filled with cilantro
and other herbs and spices, then covered with silver leaf and
a scientifically recreated “egg” using yoghurt. A twist on the
egg on a spoon idea -maybe this was a childhood memory for
Gaggan from his school sports day?
The following dish was a real show stopper, an edible “plastic
bag” of nuts made with translucent rice paper.Trying to
convince your Thai partner that it’s safe to eat a plastic bag
can be a little difficult. However once tried they are game for
any other oddities to follow, such as the deconstructed Bhajis
that resemble a bird nest or the Foie Gras hot dogs, where the
bread is made entirely from onion powder which just melts
in your mouth in seconds, leaving you with a mouth full of
smooth, silky pâté.
The cocktails should also be mentioned at this stage, The
Mango cocktail is simply To die For containing large chunks
of mango served from a tall smoking glass which looks as
if it has come straight from a mad scientist’s laboratory. As
does the coconut concoction they also served, sorry I forget
the exact names of this cocktails but I did have a few - the
service staff were very attentive!
If you are lucky enough to be served by the hilarious Khun
Ae (ask for him by name) you're certainly in for a night to
remember. Last but not least my favorite cocktail “The Drunk
Samurai” a potent blend of Japanese liqueurs and Sake but
be warned, it comes in sorbet form with Ikura (salmon roe)
and Japanese pepper.

FOOD & DRINK
Back to the food and next we enjoyed a simple dish of extremely
fresh oysters and wasabi. That certainly woke up the taste
buds ! This was no doubt to prepare us for what followed: the
best soup I have ever tasted, consisting of an egg yolk cooked
at precisely 62 centigrade, asparagus, morels and artichokes,
finished with a slice of truffle and chili air, and if that wasn’t
enough it was served ina real stone rock.
In fact all seventeen courses were presented on an array of
different plates varying from little baskets, rocks, spoons and
what only can be described as a miniature version of the kind of
scales street vendors use to carry their wares around Bangkok.
Attention to detail in this restaurant is a feast for the eyes and
makes the whole dining experience completely memorable.
Another favorite of mine was the lamb sliders, OMG I never
knew burgers could be so delicious, if they opened a fast food
chain serving these sliders all the major fast food chains would go out of business in no time. These were presented on the
street vendors scales previously mentioned.
Obviously with seventeen courses and nearly as many
cocktails, I cannot describe all the dishes, flavors and
ingredients, but there was a particularly lovely fish with
Indian mustard powder that I was very impressed with, a
dish of “Iberian pork belly” and a lamb chop covered with
a glass pleasure dome that once removed released a most
delightful aroma.
“Her indoors”/the wife cannot and will not eat any lamb so
instead the kitchen prepared for her a Tandoori king prawn
which was also very good - I know because I stole a little
taster!
Now it was time for dessert. Yes you’ve guessed it this
was no simple affair consisting of three dessert courses
but again, do not worry they are not big portions, more
little tasters. We started with the delightfully named “Poor
Man’s Porridge” which was a concoction of Jasmine rice
ice- cream and pistachio crisps, finished off with a dose of
rose room freshener. Sounds strange and I suppose it was a bit but it reminded me of my dear old mother’s rice pudding back
in the UK when I was a youngster.
Then a dessert with a dash of Indian flare, “Masala Chai”, an ice sorbet of saffron and cardamom, a great combination of
flavors that also cleansed the palate for the finale. Simply named “The Magnum” and served by a chef at the table on a
chopping board, this is just an explosion of different kinds of chocolate flavors, temperatures and textures -no doubt inspired
by the famous ice cream of the same name. Undoubtedly, more than enough chocolate to keep any “Chocoholic” happy.
All in all, I can honestly say that this was one of my most memorable dining experiences ever. I really cannot recommend
visiting this restaurant highly enough, so much so that when people ask me what is on my bucket list I say going on holiday
to the Maldives and having dinner at Gaggan - these two things, in my opinion should be done at least once in one’s lifetime.
The restaurant is hidden down a little
side street on Soi Langsuan, Ploenchit
Road but has a large sign post on the
main road, so easy enough to find.

Chez Yvette, a hidden gem that shines
bright on the dark side.
Hidden away down a quiet side road of the Soi Nerb Plerb Wan section of chicken crossroads lies the Holland Tulip Resort,
home to the family run French restaurant named Chez Yvette. Upon entering e you are warmly greeted by enthusiastic and
friendly staff, our waitress for the night Khun YaYa, being a real asset to the restaurant.
Our drinks order was quickly taken and a sliced loaf of warm bread with tomato salsa brought to the table in no time, allowing
us to wet our appetite as we browsed the small but exciting menu, where there was certainly something for everyone.
We started by ordering my old favorite pan seared foie gras with black cherries and caramelized gala apple whilst my “better
half” chose the Italian cold cuts, a selection of chorizo, coppa, mortadella and Parma ham. My foie gras was cooked to
perfection and just melted in the mouth, the cherries and apple complimented the richness of the dish and left you wanting
more. The cold cuts were good quality and beautifully presented on a slate chopping board.
For our second course another two favorites jumped out, the imported rabbit leg in mustard sauce and Tournedos Rossini.
This steak served on a slice of toast, covered in rich Madeira sauce and topped with a slice of foie gras, came with a small
side salad and delicious helping of dauphinoise potato cooked in a small ramekin dish.
The proprietor Jeremy aims to treat all his guests as if they are members of his own family. He reminisced about his childhood
growing up in Nice, South of France, telling us how his family would get together to sit around the kitchen table whilst his
grandmother Yvette (whom the restaurant is named after), served dish after dish of wonderful home cooking which has
actually become the back bone of his menu, - how special is that? When you eat in Chez Yvette you are enjoying a slice of
history with old family recipes passed down through the decades.
Back to the food, my rabbit was once again a large portion, not skinny like the Thai rabbits, no sir and the mustard sauce was

just perfect, so much so, that I think grandma Yvette would have been very proud of her grandson Jeremy and his lovely
restaurant. Fettuccini was recommended as the perfect accompaniment to this dish the pasta soaking up all the wonderfully
creamy mustard sauce.
We were both full to the brim, so we waited a while before ordering desert and over a few glasses of wine, got to know the
staff, who really made the effort to welcome and take care of all Jeremy's guests. It is very refreshing to meet someone who
has been in Thailand so long (approx 20 years) and is still so enthusiastic about what he is doing here.
It’s easy to see that the restaurant is a labor of love and its the ideal venue for families to just relax and spend time together,
whilst eating great food and drinking wine at the same time, of course.
So finally we got around to ordering desserts from two small blackboards on painters’ easel - yet another nice touch.
For a lone chocoholic they can serve a single chocolate lava cake, but for a group they have created an island lava cake
which serves six. We opted for The Rhum Baba and Tiramisu. The Rhum Baba came with a syringe full of Capt Morgan’s
rum and a serving of vanilla ice cream while the Tiramisu was as good as you will find anywhere.A night cap of Don Papa,
interesting Filipino rum with the proprietor and staff completed the night off perfectly.
The whole bill came to 3,200 THB including all drinks and two carafes of wine, so exceptional value for money considering
the ambience, service and quality of food.

The 2015/16 UK Premier League
The much-awaited UK premier league football season kicks off in earnest on 8th August 2015 and
the early season fixtures make for an exciting start. The very first match on that auspicious Saturday
is between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspurs at 12:45pm UK time. This is followed
by Bournemouth vs. Aston Villa, Everton vs. Watford and Leicester vs. Sunderland all sporting a
3pm local time kick off. At the same time Norwich face off against Crystal Palace and Chelsea
plays Swansea. The first Sunday matches of the season take place at 1:30pm local time on the
following day and feature battles between Arsenal and West Ham and at the same time Newcastle
vs. Southampton, with a later 4pm start for Stoke vs. Liverpool.
The latter match comes hot on the heels of Liverpool’s Asia tour which included a mid July visit to Bangkok where they took
on the Thai All Stars to win 4-0. Such was the popularity of the event that evening rush hour traffic came to a virtual standstill
across the city while huge crowds gathered at Rajamangala stadium. Even though Thai nationals were undoubtedly rooting
football shirts, full kits and other souvenirs. Clubs have been
capitalizing on their specific branding and have been building
out their marketing opportunities accordingly. The worldwide
market for football related items has continued to grow and it
contributes to making UK Football one of the most lucrative
sports on the planet.
for the Thai All Stars, there were no shortage of Thai Liverpool
fans also. Indeed Thai’s seem to be as football mad as the
Brits and apart from some games where the Thai National
team is playing, their dedication to British football seems to
be unstoppable.
You can see this in the amount of dedication there is to
the acquisition of football paraphernalia including original

The second week of the 2015/16 season sees Arsenal
defending its position in its second match of the season this
time against Crystal Palace. This match is on Sunday the 16th
August with a 1:30pm UK kick off time and follows Arsenal’s
win against West Bromwich Albion on the final day of the last
season on the 24th May. In that match, Theo Walcott scored
a hat trick in the first half and Jack Wilshere scored a goal
from 20 yards to give Arsenal a 4-0 lead at half time. Albion’s
Gareth McAuley scored a goal in the second half.
Both Walcott and Wilshere were returning to top form after
time off in the previous year for knee and ankle injuries. After
scoring they both celebrated with Declan Lynch, Arsenal's
physiotherapist who has been credited with their recovery.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said "Theo had a great
game today. He was on fire and moved well. Jack Wilshere as
well.” He added, “I wanted to pick a team to win this game”.

Meanwhile, following the match, West
Bromwich Albion's head coach Tony
Pulis said, "We looked like a team
who have played against Liverpool,
Manchester United and Chelsea in the
last few weeks. We've had a tough runin. I think the performance [in our prior
match] against Chelsea took a lot out of
the players. Maybe I should have rested
a couple, because they looked jaded.
It was a disappointment because we'd
done so well. We hadn't reached the
standards you need. But we were better
in the second half."
Also on the final day of the last season,
Aston Villa struggled against Burnley with
the game ending 0-1. Danny Ings was
the sole goal scorer and it was his early
goal, (just six minutes into the match) that
stood its ground. Villa failed to equalize
making it their eighth home defeat of the
season.
As for the upcoming season, there
has been plenty of pre season activity
during the summer including Manchester United’s signing of mid=fielder Bastian Schweinsteiger from Germany’s Bundesliga
champions Bayern Munich for £14.4 million. This was based on a three-year contract. The club also acquired Morgan
Schneiderlin from Southampton on a four-year contract worth around £25 million. The Schneiderlin signing features an option
for a further one year extension. The new acquisitions following an earlier £40 million summer splurge for defender Matteo
Darmian and forward Memphis Depay.
Schweinsteiger said, "I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at
Bayern Munich. It has been an incredible journey and I didn't
take the decision to leave lightly.” He added, "Manchester
United is the only club that I would have left Munich for. I feel
ready for this new and exciting challenge in what I regard as
the most competitive league in the world”. Schneiderlin said,
"Once I learned that United were interested in signing me, it
was a very easy decision to make.” He further commented,
“I have enjoyed seven very happy years with Southampton
and it's a club that will always be in my heart. But the chance
to be part of this squad to help this great club be successful
was too good to miss." The new season sees Manchester
United facing off with Southampton on Sunday September
20th 2015 with a 4pm UK time kick off.
the season between West Bromwich Albion and Manchester
City on Monday 10th August starts at 8pm UK time. - that’s a
start time of 2am in Thailand. For weekday matches that take
place after the end of British summer time, such as the Jan
13th 2016 fixture of Tottenham vs. Leicester the start time will
be even later in Thailand - 3am!
Still, these later times only affect weekday matches of which
there are relatively few. Most of the action takes place on
Saturdays with a mid afternoon kick off in the UK. It means
that a vast majority of the fixtures can be enjoyed here in your
favourite pub or bar starting at 9pm or 10pm, and finishing
while the night is still young!
With kick-off times in mind, it is evident that match times are
quite important to worldwide fans but especially so for fans
in Thailand.
At the start of the UK Premier League season, the time
difference between the UK and Thailand is six hours,
which means that the majority of matches screened live
on Saturdays with a 3pm UK kick off can be enjoyed quite
conveniently at 9pm by both foreign tourists and Thais alike.
Bars and restaurants in Pattaya and Bangkok, not previously
considered as sports bars, have become quite adept at
adding live streams of UK football matches on large LCD
screens dotted around their establishments. Patrons can
enjoy a pre kick off meal and then soak up some of the best
draught beers on tap whilst enjoying the match.
After 25th October 2015 the time difference between the
UK and Thailand increases to seven hours due to the end
of British summer time. This does not affect the Saturday
games much but there are some weekday games that kick
off late in the UK, which makes watching them an all-night
affair in Thailand. For example, the first weekday match of

From
Battledore &
Shuttlecock
to Badminton
The History
of the Sport
If you were to ask a passing stranger what he or she knew about the topic of Battledore and Shuttlecock, the most likely response
would be either, “Battle-what and shuttle-who?” or the always popular, “Huh?” To clarify things, let me explain that Battledore and
Shuttlecock was an ancient racket game from which the modern day sport of badminton was developed. The children’s game that
has since grown up to become a full fledged competitive sport was devised, some say by the Greeks, around two millennia ago. Over
the past two-thousand or so years, its rules have undergone a number of revisions and it has had more than a few regional names.
The Name Game
In the early days Medieval European peasants played ‘Battledore and Shuttlecock’. By the 17th century the French courtesans
amused themselves with the same game, but called it Jeu de Volant or the ‘Flying Game’. Meanwhile, the natives indigenous to the
sub-continent of India enjoyed a very similar game which went by the name of ‘Poona’. When Poona was transplanted by British
army officers back to Jolly Old England, the game was civilized by renaming it ‘Lawn Tennis with Shuttlecocks’. Evidently Poona’s
anglicized name was found unsuitable by some, as the first English book ever published on the subject in 1860, was titled Badminton
Battledore – a New Game. Still not satisfied, at some point the English book’s title was truncated. The result of the reduction in
syllables became the name of the game the world now knows as ‘Badminton’ … Unless of course you reside in the Land of Smiles
where the good people of Thailand only know and enjoy a racket and shuttlecock sport whose name in Thai is Bàet-mí dtan.
In case you’re wondering, the word “battledore” stems from the early 15th century, Middle English word of “batyldore”. I’m told that
it was a wooden paddle-like utensil used by washer women to beat what passed for clothes in medieval times, clean! The origin of
the word “shuttlecock” is unclear. Apparently it has no meaning, other than that of being the object which was long ago struck back
and forth by a pair of battledores or shuttled to and fro today by twin rackets.
Badminton’s Beginnings
Despite being credited with conceiving the game, no one really knows what title the ancient Greek’s bestowed upon their creation.
Those who study this sort of thing, swear that the sport migrated to the east – not west. Apparently, it first turned up in what the
Greeks referred to as the Indus Region or what you and I now know as modern day India. Overtime, the game migrated even further
east along the ancient trade route called the ‘Silk Road’ to the Asian nations of China, Japan and to the land that would in the future
become Siam.
Indian Improvements
As a result of the Third Anglo- Maratha War (I never heard of it either) between the Marathas and the British, the city of Poona, which
is now pronounced “Pune” and is the ninth largest city in all of India was seized and garrisoned by the British Army in 1817. It is to
this city that modern badminton can trace its roots. To pass time, British officers posted to the garrison there learned to play a fastpaced local game which they called ‘Poona’. Poona was remarkably similar in every respect to Battledore and Shuttlecock except for
the fact that the shuttlecock had to be hit over a net or a string. When the officer’s wives played Poona as a popular outdoor social
pastime, the game was often referred to by the much gentler name of “Hit and Scream”. No one knows for sure, but it was said that
in 1873, the first rules for the game using a net were written by the officers who played the game named after the Indian city in which
they served. Upon their return to England in the 1870s, the soldiers brought both the rules and the equipment necessary to play the
game home with them.
English Refinements
Hit and Scream, played under the rules that prevailed in British India rapidly became one of England’s favorite outdoor pastimes. An
English magazine article described it as “Battledore and shuttlecock played with sides, across a string suspended some five feet from
the ground.” As the game grew in popularity, a slim volume titled “Lawn Tennis, Croquet, Racquets, etc.” was published in which ten
pages were devoted to, “Lawn tennis played with shuttlecocks instead of balls.” When the game was in its infancy, a version called

‘Ball Badminton’ was played using balls of wool instead of a shuttlecock. Evidently, the heavier woolen balls performed better under
windy or wet conditions. The game was played both indoors and outdoors on a court curiously shaped like an hourglass. The playing
field’s unusual shape was attributed to the fact that the game was often played in spacious Victorian salons whose large double
doors opened inwards at the center on both sides of the playing surface. The rectangular shaped badminton court did not become
official until 1901.
Credit for the sport’s official name of ‘Badminton’ goes to the Duke of Beaufort who is said to have officially introduced the game
of Poona to English aristocracy in the early 1870’s. Rumor has it that during a lawn party at his country estate, whose name just so
happened to be ‘Badminton’, the imported game of Poona was a huge success. Following that, the British elite, who so enjoyed
the game, henceforth always referred to Poona as “The Badminton Game”. Therefore, today’s sport was named after the location of
the grounds on which the party game was first played by England’s ruling class. As The Badminton Game grew in stature, English
Badminton clubs were formed and the rules of the game were standardized. In 1893, the disparate British clubs were amalgamated
into the Badminton Association of England, and a uniform set of rules that governed all badminton clubs was established. Then in
1899, the first All England Championships were held and a world class sport was born.
Going Global
As England’s top players moved off the lawns and out of the fashionable salons onto competitive courts, the sport now officially known
as Badminton spread to other countries around the globe. This unexpected phenomenon spawned the need for an international
badminton organization. In 1934 the International Badminton Federation, which is now known as the Badminton World Federation
(BWF) was established in Kent, England to organize international competitions and to develop and regulate the sport globally. The
BWF now presides over numerous international competitions. Most notable being the Thomas Cup, instituted by Sir George Thomas
in 1939 for the top men’s single player, and the Uber Cup created by Betty Uber, one of England’s top female players, in 1956 for the
best women’s singles player. The BWF is also responsible for badminton’s annual World Championship games in which more than
150 member nations compete for the title of world champion.
The Olympics first showcased badminton in both the 1972, and 1988 Olympic Games, but only as a demonstration sport. Badminton
didn’t officially compete for the coveted gold, silver and bronze medals until the XXV Olympiad held in Barcelona, Spain in 1992.
Since then, all but seven of the 61 total medals awarded for badminton were won by Asian nations. Just as professional footballers
and baseball players have been doing for decades, today’s top badminton athletes also compete for top honors, prize money,
television contracts and the always lucrative product endorsements.
Asian Ancestry
Regardless of what one calls it, badminton’s history is both colorful and cosmopolitan.
Despite being spawned in the classical Mediterranean world, and having a net added in India, and the fact that its rules were finalized
by the British, Asia was the continent that truly embraced the peculiarly named game of Battledore and Shuttlecock as its own.
Today China and Japan currently dominate the international badminton scene. In fact, fifteen out of the top ten ranked men’s
and women’s competitors are from Asian nations: seven from China, three from Japan, two from Taiwan, two from South Korea,
and one from Thailand. The remaining five male and female players that make up 2015’s top twenty athletes are of European or
Indian extraction. Because of this, it’s not unusual for matches held in any of the above mentioned Asian countries to draw crowds
numbering 15,000 fans or greater. Spectators in excess of the aforementioned 15K figure are expected to flock to Jakarta Indonesia
to see for themselves the most prestigious tournament in all of badminton – the BWF World Championship, held this year on August
10 to 16. During which, the entire Kingdom of Thailand will be cheering for Khun Ratchanok Intanon, the youngest player ever to win
the BWF women’s singles championship. She did so at the tender young age of eighteen, just two years ago in 2013. She’s also this
year’s third highest ranked female player.
Rules & Description
Since its inception, Battledore and Shuttlecock, a rustic game played by two individuals in which a projectile (shuttlecock), made
form some light material such as a cork trimmed with feathers, was hit back and forth with a primitive bat (battledore), made
from parchment or animal gut strung across a wooden frame, as many times as possible without allowing it to fall to the ground,
has changed dramatically. In case you’re wondering, a volley of 2,117 hits is the record for the most consecutive Battledore and
Shuttlecock hits. This feat was allegedly accomplished by members of the Somerset family back in 1830.
The modern rules of Badminton dictate that each game be played until one side reaches 21 points. However, if the game is tied at 20
or 21 all, play must continue until one side wins by a minimum of two points. If the score remains tied up to a maximum of 30 points,
after that it’s possible to win the game by a minimum of just one point. A single point is earned at the end of each volley regardless
of whether the scoring side served or received (an older set of rules only allowed the serving side to score). The side that serves is
determined by a cast or spinning of the shuttlecock. The side to which the shuttlecock points is allowed to either choose option ‘A’ –
whether they wish to serve or receive, or option ‘B’ – which side of the court they wish to play on. The opponent is left with whatever
option was not chosen. A match is the best of three games.
Just about anyone can pick up a lightweight badminton racket and hit a shuttlecock back and forth on or off a court, and with or
without a net. Despite being a simple and easy game to play, badminton is a bit deceptive as it is the fastest of all the racket sports.
When powerfully struck the shuttlecock has been clocked at speeds of up to 200 miles per hour, and a single player can expect to
run approximately one mile during a three game match. Ten years ago I purchased a badminton set comprised of three shuttlecocks
and two rackets from Big C for the unbelievable low price of 150 baht! For four years it accompanied me to the pool nearly every day,
and the game was played in various ways by just about every person in the complex who spent time poolside. In terms of value for
money, that cheap set of badminton equipment was probably the best investment I ever made in the Land of Smiles.

As soon as I got 6 bait fish I put out
two float rigs and two bottom rigs and
then continued to fish for small
fish. Something hit a bottom rig only for a
second. On reeling in I found that
the bait was gone. Later I got another hit
and the rod stayed bent over and in
no time I had a 1 kg queen fish (bpla sala)
in the net. Not much of a fight, big
rod and 20 lb braid did not give the fish
much of a chance. However I got
my chance when something hit my small
2-6 lb ugly stick with 6 lb braid.
Like lightening the fish moved across tide
and went around one of the other
lines. Luckily the small rod was easy to
weave around the other rod and
it was game on. More line was stripped
off and I was glad I always have
my drag on a light setting. Finally a 1 kg
queen fish went into the net, now
that was FUN!
I lost a 3 or 4 kg queen fish, he
went twice round another line and while
sorting the problem I left the
clicker on. This makes the drag setting
harder and when I finally got it all
sorted out, the wire trace snapped. I had
bought some 10 lb uncoated wire
and liked the limpness of it. I was thinking
of using it for queen fish but now I will stick with the 20lb. 30lb wire as it just looks and feels too thick, but if I lose too many more
fish I might upgrade.
I finally caught another 1 kg queen fish on the light rod. I lost a couple of bottom rigs to something with sharp teeth. An eight inch
barracuda about 3 oz has teeth that will zip through 12lb line. So I have made up a string of 7 medium shiny hooks on 20 lb trace line
on a four foot length of 30 lb fluorocarbon. I have tested this rig at Koh Krok and caught a lot of small bait fish and I am hoping that
it will work for all sizes of fish at Koh Man Wichia. I’ll let you know how it turns out.
I met Stefan out at Koh Man Wichia aboard his boat La Bocca, named after his Italian restaurant in Jomtien. He regularly fishes the
outer islands for predatory fish, Spanish mackerel, long fin cavalla, trevally and queen fish. Stefan likes to jig for fish on the drift, using
20 lb braid and a small metal jig. It does produce fish however I prefer to anchor up and take a more relaxed style.
Scott’s guys aboard captain Deang’s boat have had a mixed result,. One trip producing three queen fish and the next eighteen. This
last trip was done in windy conditions with a big swell running.
Swell is easy to spot on a windless day, every few minutes five or so big waves crash onshore. About ten metres out it is a big mound
of water and safe to go through. Swell like a tsumai goes from top to bottom of the sea, lifting everything in its path. Fishing the
bottom is difficult as your gear is raised up and visibility down to feet. Divers cannot see anything and the fish cannot see your bait.
If you are anchored up and using a long trace it will tend to tangle as the swell lifts the lead up giving it a chance to wrap around the
main line.
If you want any info on tackle shops, want to share your photo’s of fish.
It’s [email protected] or SMS 0808356945. Have fun, Roger

It took a break last year due to the political situation but the Bangkok International Auto
Salon bounced back this year and it was a big, brash and in your face as ever before.
This is a new concept, in fact it’s just the third edition, following on from shows in 2012 and 2013, but it’s already found its place on
the crowded Thai auto show calendar by offering its own unique blueprint as the biggest modified car show in ASEAN.
The show, organized by Thai media giant Inspire Entertainment, is modeled straight off the world famous Tokyo Auto Salon. That
means around a dozen show stopping cars from the Japanese ‘Salon’ are shipped over to compliment the best tuned and customized
road and race cars that Thailand has to offer and as readers will be all to aware we have one of the most vibrant scenes for car
modification in the world, barely a car on the roads of Pattaya come without some sort of bodykit, decal ornamentation or a massive
air intake.
Crucially, the big car manufacturers have jumped onto the new concept.
Market leaders Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mazda and Isuzu had official
booths and they all showcased racing cars alongside the ‘optional
extra’ kits that resonate with the market.
Toyota gave a debut to the ‘TRD’ version of the New Hilux Revo, which
debuted a couple of months ago, alongside the muscular 86 that it runs
in Thailand Super Series’ headlining ‘Super Car’ category, in fact the car
on show was the famous no ‘39’ of Nattavude Charoensukhawatana,
the 2013 Super Car champion and one of Thailand’s top stars for the
last couple of decades.
Mazda showed off its stable of racecars, led out by the two brand new
turbodiesel Mazda2 machines that race in TSS’s hotly competitive
Super Production category. These ultra-efficient cars are at the start of
their development phase but Mazda has high ambitions to take racing
on a new path. Alongside the two small cars was a stunning RX-8 that
the official Mazda team, Innovation Motorsports, ran at the Bangsaen
Thailand Speed Festival at the end of last year. Alongside them were
road cars with new ‘Racing Series’ body kits inspired by the heroics of
the team on track and a new CX-5 ‘Concept’.
Thailand Super Series is thinking big these days so it was no surprise
that its booth was packed out with menace – and muscle. Leading

drift star turned circuit racer is the joint Super Car championship leader
after the first round thanks to two consistent drives and he’s another
aiming for the title. Not to be missed was the high-tech Audi R8 LMS Cup
of Henk Kiks, the B-Quik Racing machine dazzling in its customary yellow
and black colours, while the booth was wrapped up by the first car to be
built for the series’ new ‘Racing Academy’ that aims to teach drivers the
art of racing.
One of the booths to attract an awful lot of attention was Liberty Walk, the
famous Japanese manufacturer of extreme body styling kits showed off its
over-the-top wares for the Ferrari 458 Italia and Nissan GT-R.
Thailand’s long tradition of racecar building wasn’t to be left out either,
Rotary Revolution, the famous Bangkok modifier of ‘rotary’ powered
Mazdas presented the first of a new breed of RX-7 racecars that it is
building this year. The car on display was finished in a stunning pink and at
least six more are planned. This company is, literally, creating a ‘revolution’
in the racing world and the new programme is all set to become one of the
biggest motorsport stories of the year.
Everything associated with the show was at the extreme end of the
scale with one car after another offering lavish tuning and customization
concepts while visitors were well entertained by a range of activities
including of the course the always-popular sexy car wash.

Porsche star is headed for Pattaya
M
otorsport has always been very popular in Pattaya. For the last three decades Thailand’s main racetrack, Bira International
Circuit, has been the hub of motorsport here, and it’s just inland from the city. It’s no exaggeration to say that Pattaya is the
hub of Thai motorsport. But in the last few years the popularity of the sport has exploded and it’s growing in appeal.
You know that’s motorsport is on an upward curve when a company like Dunkin’ Donuts decides to splash its name all over a racing
car – and is then happy to say it’s getting value from the association.
And that’s exactly the case here. In fact a flashy recent mall launch
signaled the arrival of Dunkin Donuts as the title sponsor of Painkiller
Racing’s #60 Porsche 997 GT3 Cup in Thailand Super Series this
year and the striking black and pink car was an immediate hit with
passing shoppers.
This year driver Paul Kanjanapas has been stepping up the gears;
he’s undertaking a full season in Super Car Class 2-GTM with the
team’s #60 Porsche 997 GT3 Cup. Certainly in the ‘quick gentleman
driver’ category, Paul has been making steady progress with his
career and that trend has continued into this year as he scored
championship points in both races at the first round of the season.
The Porsche is also wearing new colours this year, a striking blend
of pink and black. That’s because Dunkin’ Donuts, which has been
supporting Paul’s racing for a few years now, has stepped up it’s
involvement to take over as the team’s title sponsor.
During the team’s official preview, Nadim Salhani, CEO of MudMan
Group, which operates the Dunkin’ Donuts brand in Thailand, was
present. He explained that it had been logical for them to raise their
support for Painkiller Racing in Super Car Class 2-GTM this year
as they already had a growing working relationship. “We’ve been
doing a lot of work with Paul at Muang Thong Thani and he has
been very supportive of the Dunkin’ brand at Impact,” he said.
So when the opportunity to title sponsor the #60 Porsche in Super
Car Class 2-GTM arose it clearly presented an opportunity to be
explored. “So we thought number one, that it’s good to continue
the relationship, and number two, it’s interesting to get a new
channel of business for us,” said Nadim.

“It’s an untapped channel of business for us, so when we started the racing, I think it’s the third or fourth year now, we found out we
get a lot of PR out of this, so it’s interesting to us, it’s well spent marketing funds for us,” he added.
The promotional opportunities offered by the TSS platform, Thailand’s biggest, most professional and most glamorous motorsport
championship, fits very well with the direction being taken by Dunkin’ Donuts. That’s one of constant evolution, explained Nadim.
“Definitely, that’s what we’ve been trying to do for the last six years,
to keep upgrading the brand,” he said. “So this is a channel of
business where you have a specific market segment and it’s related
to new projects coming up in the future and we will upgrade and
have some new products so it fits everything that we’re trying to do
for the future.”
It also fits well with the company’s operations locally. “We’ve been
in Pattaya for a while and we’re expanding because there are a
lot of new projects in Pattaya and it’s really happening,” he said.
“Everything fits together with these races in Pattaya and as we
do the PR we’re hoping the customer will eventually come to our
stores.”
So expect to see the pink-and-black #60 Porsche 997 GT3 Cup
commanding plenty of attention both on and off the track this year
and ahead of the high profile visit by Thailand Super Series to Bira
Circuit in September, expect to see the car making a splash in the
heart of Pattaya.

Information supplied By GE Power Conversion
The marine industry is rapidly evolving. New technology means
that vessels are more efficient and the need to keep up with the
demands of globalisation has meant that we’re seeing faster
and larger ships at sea. Naval marine and offshore industries are
becoming more efficient safer and cleaner.
Here are five facts about the marine industry that have been
shaped by these recent trends. 1. The world’s fastest ship is powered by jet engines Francisco,
the world’s fastest ship, uses a modified jet engine which was
originally developed for the first C-5 transport plane, to enable the
aircraft to carry heavy cargo across the Pacific Ocean. Through
research and development the TF39 engine has been adapted
for marine use, with the modified LM2500 engines producing
up to 34 megawatts of power each. Using these engines, the
Francisco ferry can travel as fast as 58.1 knots, or 67 miles per
hour, carrying up to 1,000 passengers and 150 cars
4. The world’s leading shipbuilders are concentrated in Asia From container ships and carriers, through to drill ships, and
offshore supply vessels, demand for larger, more complex ships
is driving strong competition. The race for new developments
and efficiency is led by the world’s largest shipbuilding countries,
China and Korea, with Japan continuing to build its position.
South Korea has some of the world’s biggest shipyards, including
several specialising in the production of all-electric vessels. 2. The largest ship in the world will not actually sail… for 25 years Once complete, the Shell Prelude will be a staggering 488m long
and will displace 600,000 metric tons of water, or as much as six
aircraft carriers. This ship will be fixed in place above the Prelude
gas field off the cost of Australia for a projected 25 years..
5. The USS Zumwalt can produce enough power for 78,000
homes To put it into context, early naval destroyers were able
to produce between three and four kilowatts of electricity. The
Zumwalt is able to produce an incredible 78,000 kilowatts –
enough to meet the power needs of 78,000 homes. Its all-electric
system provides power that is able to propel the ship, power the
radars and computer systems and provide a surplus to drive all
the weapons systems.
3. Over 90% of the world’s trade is carried by sea While the
shipping industry emits far less carbon dioxide per ton for each
mile travelled compared to trucking, as global trade continues
to increase, enhancing the efficiency and reducing the carbon
footprint of these ships will be essential. 60

CEA RACING BY EARL BROWN
Pattaya City has lots to offer with beaches, restaurants and endless activities to while away your time, but did you know
that Pattaya is home to one of the most successful racing teams in Thailand?
CEA Racing was formed in 2010, up until then the team was known as TR Motorsports. During this time CEA (Cranes
And Equipment Asia) were a minor sponsor however after seeing how the team operated at the highest level, CEA
decided to expand their interest in the racing team and become the main Team Sponsor from 2010 onwards and the
team was duly renamed CEA Racing.
History
So who is the guy behind the wheel that makes the
magic happen?
Thomas (Rain Master) Raldorf is CEA Racings’
#1 driver with over 34 years driving experience,
born in Denmark this portly likeable guy began
his racing life on two wheels, it was only when a
friend asked if he would like to try out his Go Kart
when Thomas realised four wheels was better than
two! Having won several Karting Championships
in Denmark Thomas’s work took him abroad and
to Thailand. He began karting around the Kingdom
and it wasn’t long until his winning mentality in
Denmark followed him here resulting in multiple
Thai Kart Championships.
Thomas quickly established his first team in
2000, “The Scandinavian Racing Team”, the
team comprised of Thomas and three fellow
Scandinavians. In 2002 Thomas changed the
name of the team to TR-Motorsport. His exploits
on the track were soon noticed by the racing world
resulting in him securing a major sponsorship

deal with The Pizza Company. From
2002-2009 The ‘Pizza Company
Racing Team’ was one of the most
dominant and successful racing
teams in South East Asia with Thomas
collecting multiple drivers and team
championship titles.
As the contract with The Pizza
Company began to run down into its
final months, Kevin Fisher: Managing
Director and founder of CEA seized
the opportunity to take over main
sponsorship duties. A new car was
acquired along with a striking new,
blue livery replete with the now famous
CEA logo and CEA Racing was born!
Present
Although the team has changed hands
the winning continues with Thomas
collecting a massive 42 trophies over
five years and firmly putting CEA
Racing on the map as one of the leading teams in Thailand. The 2014 season was one of mixed emotions although CEA Racing
won the Team championship they narrowly missed out on the drivers’ title. This was due to some unfortunate mechanical
failures during the early races of the season. For the 2015 season Thomas and the team have entered not one but two hi profile
championships. The newly renamed Grand Prix Racing League is the teams’ native championship and their main priority after
coming so close the previous year. The team is also competing in the Thailand Super Series, after being invited as guests to
race in several single TSS events. The team felt they could mount a serious challenge to the other drivers and hopefully come
back with some silverware! Both championships are heavily supported and races can be seen on the following media, GPI
Channel, True Sport 3, Thai National TV Channels 3,5,7,9, Speed Channel, Grand Prix Channel many races are also available
online.
Races are held all over Thailand including the new Formula One grade track at Buriram, The Chang International Circuit
as it is now known has state of the art facilities and has been a good hunting ground for CEA Racing with them winning
several trophies in both 2014 and 2015. A track closer to home is the Bira International circuit which is only a 25 minute
drive from central Pattaya, this tight twisty circuit produces some of the most exciting racing, a great spectacle for the fans
who can get up close to the action and come along to the pits to
meet the drivers and have photos with the cars. But the race all the
teams look forward to is the Festival of Speed week at Bang Saen
held in November. Bang Saen is a tight and twisty street circuit, not
dissimilar to Monaco or Macau as the track is so narrow crashes are
frequent and makes for an exciting spectacle. It is the biggest single
race event in Thailand attracting drivers from around the world to
compete with attendances reaching over 250,000 for the five days.
CEA Racing won both races last year and hope to repeat that feat
this year.
Now half way through the 2015 season in both championships it
appears CEA racing are well on course for even more success, the
team are currently leading both championships with just two races
to go. However this is Motorsport and the team will not be having
any premature celebrations until Thomas passes the chequered flag
and the title is confirmed.
You can keep up to date with all the news and info about the team
on their dedicated Facebook page

I
ts Mother’s Day this August.and in Thailand Mother’s Day is celebrated on the Queen’s birthday. Now we all have mothers but we
are not all mothers and some of us are mothers to four legged babies. I know that some of you think us mothers of fur babies are
a little crazy and we are but that doesn’t take anything away from the love we have for our pets.
Let me tell you how I came to be the mother of my four legged trouble maker. I was housesitting/dogsitting for a deployed military
family. While I was looking after their two big dogs, my friend asked me, since I was already dog sitting in a huge house, if I could take
his little dogs as well. Being a sucker for animals I of course agreed.
The dynamic was crazy. I had three young male dogs all tearing up the house and then there was Chibby. She was still fat from
being severely over fed by her original owner (22 pounds -when she was rescued, she now weighs 10) and she was the oldest of all
the dogs. The other dogs were good sports and allowed her to believe she was the alpha dog. They would lay on their backs and
let her chew on their jowls. It was pretty darn cute. She used to get worn out though as the boy dogs liked to wrestle all night long.
Chibby on the other hand liked to cuddle. I used to let her up in the bed with me and she would get under the covers and cuddle up
for warmth. A month of that was all it took. When my friend returned he stayed with me for a while but Chibby no longer listened to
him. When he gave her a command, no matter what it was she would look to me for confirmation. If I told her ok, she would, if I told
her no she would not. Poor Jose, he looked at me and said, “What have you done to my dog?”
I just laughed and said I hadn’t done anything, other than cuddle with her. Then the day came and we parted ways. I went to a new
home and left Chibby behind with her owner. This lasted all of three days. At the end of the third day I was contemplating going to
bed again and already in tears. I had cried myself to sleep the two previous nights and this night I just couldn’t do it. Instead I picked
up the phone and called Jose. He was immediately concerned at the distress in my voice. I told him that I missed Chibby so severely
that I couldn’t sleep, he said that she missed me too and he knew it was bad because his little piggy dog named Chibby which means
“Chubby One”, would not eat. Within the hour he brought her to me, with her food, her bed and all her toys and wished us luck. That
was five years ago this month.
Moving is a pain no matter what, now add to the move the fact that the largest ocean in the world has to be crossed and that the new
destination is a foreign country. In addition to the new location being a foreign country my starting point was Hawaii. For those who
do not know, Hawaii is certified worldwide as a rabies free state. There are strict conditions for quarantining animals coming into the
island even from the best of countries - returning with my pet to Hawaii from a third world nation with a reputation for having rabies
would be near impossible, so the decision to bring my pet to Thailand was a very serious one.
It was March 2012 and I was planning my exodus to Thailand. When I say planning what I mean is that I was frantically selling
everything I owned and trying to get copies of my birth certificate so that I could get a hold of my very first passport. Like most
Americans I had done virtually no international travel. The occasional weekend in Mexico prior to 9/11 doesn’t really count. In the
madness I began researching what one has to do to import an animal to Thailand. It is not terribly difficult, however bringing an animal

back to Hawaii from Thailand could present an issue.
The decision I made was near impossible but I decided I had to leave Chibby behind in America while I moved to Thailand. I had a
TEFL course booked, a month of accommodations, and not a clue as to how things were going to go once I hit the Land of Smiles.
With heavy heart I left my little one behind with a friend and embarked on my international journey.
After six months in the Kingdom I found I had settled in wonderfully. I had rented a house in the country with a huge yard and set
about saving money for the journey home to pick up Chibby. I was working as a teacher and during the break between school years
my plan was to travel back to Hawaii for a month to visit friends and family, and most importantly bring my fur baby back to Thailand
with me.
I returned to Thailand with Chibby in May of 2013. It was so good to have my little one back . It turned out there were just too many
fleas and ticks near the river though and our time there was short lived. Now it is 2015, Chibby is 10 years old, she has been in
Thailand for a little over 2 years and now we reside in Pattaya.
Pattaya as a whole is pretty pet friendly. There are many programs in place to help keep the soi dogs under control. With such a large
percentage of the population in Pattaya being farang for so many decades there are no shortage of things to take care of your pet.
You will find many hotels that are dog friendly, dog hotels for your pet if you don’t find a pet friendly option, dog food stores, 24 hour
emergency care hospitals, numerous vets and clinics, and even a designer clothing store for dogs in Central Festival.
Travelling with my dog in Thailand is not impossible but some modes of transport are more difficult than others. Taking her on the
bus is hit or miss, I always have to tip the driver and not even that works every time. She is able to ride the train, although only in the
cars that have fans, live animals are not allowed in the air conditioning. She gets issued her own train ticket though which is pretty
adorable. Taxi cabs are no issue, and she loves to ride on my motorbike with me.
For those times that I just can not take her with me I use Border Jack Dog Resort in Pattaya. The hotel is extremely reasonably priced
, I can take her bed, select air conditioned room or fan, which changes depending on the time of year. My little one gets cold easily
so I really only opt for the AC room in April or May. The staff at Border Jack are obvious animal lovers. They offer obedience classes
and have two parks for different size dogs, plus a swimming pool for exercise. After using swimming to help Chibby shed over half
her body weight the pool alone is worth a visit for your pet.

or those readers who don’t know, I am an Australian,
and I don’t say that with any supercilious intent.
Australians are no better or worse than any other
nationality. We do, however, have a self deprecating
sense of humour which is perhaps, unique. We can put ourselves
down in the most humorous ways. Culturally speaking, apart from
ourselves, there are three other nationalities we Aussies love to stir
up; New Zealanders, the English and Americans.
The Kiwis, our poor cousins from across the Tasman Sea, give
as good as they get so, like the rest of the world, I’ll ignore them for
the time being. The English, or Pommies as they are affectionately
known, are more aloof and snobbish, providing us with even more
reasons – and ammunition – for verbal jousts. No Australian can
call himself an Aussie unless he has an extensive repertoire of
‘Pommie jokes’
Today though, it is the Septic’s turn to take the spotlight and,
knowing them to be a sensitive and easily offended lot, I have to be
careful what I write. (‘Septic’ is short for ‘septic
tank’,
the rhyming slang for ‘Yank’ which was used as a
term of endearment by Australians during World
War II.)
I confess to feeling sorry for Americans at
times. Whatever goes wrong in the world, they
always seem to get the blame. Beer prices
go up? Blame Americans. Car won’t start?
Burn the American flag. It rains on your
wedding day? Picket the US Embassy. If I
was them I’d be pretty tired of that global
attitude by now. But I don’t want to talk
about the American political situation,
or any political situation for that matter.
Politics is an institution run by lunatics
and supported by fools. Not this fool.
I want to talk about the American in
Pattaya; you know, the one you hear
coming twenty minutes before he
arrives.
I should point out that
I have many great American
friends here in Pattaya and
I hope to still be able to say
that after they read this. My
first exposure to socializing
with Americans was at the
(gone but not forgotten)
Alamo Bar in Soi 8 and
it was a great lot of fun.
I have written several
stories based upon the
characters who once
loitered in the Alamo.
Mostly American expats,
they accepted this little
Aussie (‘little’ in terms of global
significance rather than physical size)
into their fold and I am not exaggerating
when I say their conversations have left me in
tears with laughter on many occasions. They loved
Pattaya and few wanted to return to their native land;
some because their appearance on US soil would initiate
legal proceedings involving decades of unpaid alimony and others
because they simply forgot how to get there.
Tequila Reef, a great restaurant/bar at the Beach Road end of
Soi 7, served the best Mexican food in Pattaya and mind-blowing

frozen margaritas. On many evenings my American friends could
be found at ‘the Reef’. I recall drinking with them on one occasion
when, to my amazement, they allowed me to get a word in. Being
a born diplomat, I exercised all my tact in reminding them that
Australia is one of the few countries with which America has
never exchanged a shot in anger. America has fought wars with
all her neighbours, England, most of Europe and almost every
country in Asia, but never with Australia. Noting their nods of
agreement, I explained to my captivated audience the reason was
simple. Although the US is only 25% larger in area than Australia,
in terms of population we have around 22 million people while the
US population has passed 300 million. Should a war ever break
out between our two nations, we Aussies don’t have enough human
resources to guard 300 million prisoners.
My companions took it very well, saying I had made a fine
joke. Dropping my smile, I replied that it wasn’t meant to be a
joke. At that, they too dropped their smiles but, in the interests
of international friendship, kindly allowed me to buy a round
of margaritas for everyone. They even stationed several of their
buddies at the front door to make sure I was not disturbed while
making the order. What a nice bunch of guys.
Observing these friends over the years, it fascinates me
the way Americans introduce themselves to other people.
Personally, I say my first name, shake hands and
it’s over and done with, but Americans can’t
seem to keep it simple.
“Hi!
I’m Billy-RayBob from Whogivesaratsbum,
Arkanseethegrassgrow, but you
can call me Chuck.”
It’s as if it is compulsory
to give your hometown and state
as an extension of your name
because there is a one in 300 million
chance some guy listening could be
your neighbour. Attempting to learn
the real reason behind this quirky
behaviour, I mentioned that I hadn’t
realized Americans were so conscious
of geography. To illustrate, I referred to
a report which stated that, when shown
a globe of the earth, 30% of American
high school students could not point to the
Pacific Ocean. That cost me a round of frozen
daiquiris. (Mental Note: Must learn to keep
my mouth shut.)
But there was one truly positive result of ha
ving watched these guys at play. Many of
them are fanatical golfers and after listening to
their exploits over the years, I have invented a new
sport which I call ‘Pattaya Golf’ (Patent Pending).
For one all-inclusive fee the sportsman will get
transport to and from the course, club hire, buggy hire,
caddy hire and all the booze he can drink. Each buggy
will be equipped with a bottomless icebox and, once the
game begins, the caddy will drive to the first tee, tee off,
drive to wherever the ball lands, hit it again, then again,
drive to the green and putt the ball into the hole. All this
while the sportsman sits in the shade of the buggy’s canopy
saving himself from dehydration. After 18 holes, the caddy
hands her scorecard to the competitor so that, if still capable
of reading, he can find out if he won or not. I think this game will
catch on with all the serious American golfers in town, but don’t
try to steal my idea. Like every American, I happen to know a very
good lawyer.

Back to the roots.
A look at why traditional models of finance are increasingly inadequate at explaining
stock market movement and why the fledgling discipline of behavioural finance may
hold some of the answers.
History seems to move in cycles and economics is no
exception. In 1759, at the dawn of the industrial revolution, Adam Smith published his seminal treatise “The
Theory of Moral Sentiments”, he ushered in a new period in the history of economics, often referred to as
the classical era, and produced a compelling account
of human decision-making, which probably makes him
the first behavioural economist.
A century later, the tide has turned. Neo-classical economists had assumed intellectual supremacy and severed all ties with the social sciences. In an attempt to
emulate the success and splendours of the natural sciences, they developed an elaborate theoretical framework based on the rationality of human behavior, which
enjoyed considerable popularity well into the second
half of the 20th century. At the core of this model is
the so-called Efficient Market Hypothesis, which posits
that human beings are perfectly rational, maximise utility and act on the basis of full and complete informationa model of man often referred to as homo economics.
and crashes should not occur. However as the bumps
and lurches of the 1980’s 90’s and the fin-de-siècle
period show, (Black Monday of 1987, Asian crisis of
1997, Russian summer of 1998 and the bear market of
2001 to 2003), markets are not always efficient; nor are
people always rational. You may test yourself: Have
you ever wondered why today many people eat fast
food, defer saving for retirement and watch popular
movies, although most are determined to eat healthily,
invest wisely and read a Dostoevsky novel tomorrow?
The trouble with “homo economicus” is that, in a nut-
As we know today, if the majority of investors were
completely rational, irrational behavioural patterns on
the stock market should cancel each other out. Bubbles

shell, he does not exist.
Today we have gone back to neo-classical models to make
more accurate decisions about people’s decisions and how
they affect markets. This revatilised approach is commonly
known as behavioural economics or, when applied to stock
markets, behavioural finance.
On a microeconomic level, behavioural finance explains the
biases and decision making errors of individual investors that
distinguish them from rational actors. These departures from
rational behavior, whether occasional or regular, may be due
to a variety of factors, such as incomplete information, limited
cognitive skills or stress. Prospect Theory developed by Nobel laureates Kanheman and Tversky, points out that investors are risk averse when considering profits but tend to be
risk takers when faced with losses, which goes a long way to
explaining why investors tend to cut their profits and let run
their losses, instead of vice versa.
On a macroeconomic level, behavioural finance can shed
light on market anomalies, such as stock or sector mispricing
as well as well as market bubbles.
Interestingly one of the most persistent stock market anomalies is due to a calendar effect. It is encapsulated in the old
adage “sell in May and go away but buy back on St. Leger
day” What the saying in effect suggests is that positive stock
market returns are usually a bit like the tourist market here
concentrated in the months from November to April, whereas
the period from May to October often exhibits poor or negative returns. As recent research on the Irish stock market,
which is one of the oldest in the world, has shown, the excess
returns that can be earned by following this strategy are statistically significant.
www.pattayatrader.com
Even though trends are likely to persist in the future, it will
be difficult for private investors to remain completely rational
in their trading decisions, and to consistently capatilise on
market inefficiencies. In this context, computer based investment programmes, which follow a disciplined trading strategy
stand a better chance of long term success.
Maybe it is one of the ironies of behavioural finance that it
teaches us not how irrationally other investors behave, but
how biased we all are in our investment decisions.

he speed at which the world develops nowadays is truly breathtaking. You can see innovations happen daily in pretty much
every single industry around the world, paradigm shifting inventions and discoveries have almost become a daily (and rather
common) happening… and keep in mind this is just the beginning of the revolution!.
We have discussed the internet (how devices are integrating into our lives thanks to the power of the internet) many times before in
this section of the magazine. However, given that it is one of the biggest technological advancements of our time (and considering
the fact it will impact and change all aspects of day to day life) it would be better if you just get used to us talking about it.
The gadgets we’ll be looking at today are the perfect example of how one device at the time, we will fully integrate with our physical
environment through the wireless via the almighty and omnipresent power of the internet.
The coolest part of this?
It will happen before we even realise.
Given that this month we are focusing on Mother's Day and Pet Care, it seemed appropriate that we choose some of this year's best
upcoming gadgets that in one way or another fall under the category of house, child and animal care.
Luckily for us, our technologically driven world has nothing but new gadgets and applications to surprise us with, let's see some of
the most interestingly “wearable” internet devices:
Smart Pacifier Blue Maestro
Pre-order right now before they hit the markets officially later
this year)from the official website www.bluemaestro.com/
pacifi-smart-pacifier at a cost of around 36 USD not including
shipping.
Sproutling baby monitor
Well ….Mommies everywhere, tell me how awesome it would
be to constantly be monitoring your child's temperature without
having to do anything?! By using Blue Maestro's smart pacifier,
you'll be able to check a baby’s temperature and transmits the
data to an app on your iOS or Android smart-phone or tablet.
Not only will this free app create records for your child's
temperature but as more and more medical services start
integrating with mobile technology you’ll soon be able to share
this data with a medical professional directly from the app, in real
time. That's right, this means your phone will alert you when your
child needs to see a doctor because the pacifier told it that the
baby was running a fever. That's really cool, isn’t it?
So yeah thanks for this lovely device Blue Maestro which you can
purchase online exclusively

I'm not a parent myself, so I will not even begin to attempt to
understand the difficulties and changes to their lives a couple
face once their newborn child arrives. One thing I can certainly
say I have noticed from seeing my friends go through this
wonderful experience is this:
Your sleeping habits and routine will be the first thing to go!
However lets face it, now you have about a thousand more things
to do that you never befrore even considered, it's completely
understandable that you’re overwhelmed! It's during these
moments that this wonderful gadget could become your best
ally. By automatically monitoring your child's life signals and
environmental factors(including body temperature, breathing
patterns, heart rates, room humidity, temperature and noise
levels) this device will alert you if anything is wrong (you baby's
heart rate increases suddenly) so that you can drop anything that
you are doing and go check on your precious one.
The Sproutling system is made up of a smart band that
comfortably fits around your child's ankle and a software app
that collects, stores and processes all the data gathered by this
band. By using the information about your child's heart rate,
breathing patterns, sleeping habits and skin temperature the app
will 'learn' how your baby behaves. This will allow this very smart
application to start making predictions i.e it will know which
times of the day your kid wakes up/ wants to go to sleep, when
he is likely to be hungry or if he has woken up in a bad mood. All
of this great information will allow you, the parent, to better plan
your routine and accommodate the little time available to you for
Issue 178 | AUGUST 2015
the things you care about.
Let me just list some of the best ways this little smart band & mobile
software device help you with the most important job in the world, being
a good parent:
• Emergency alerts: If the heart rate of your child changes dramatically
you'll be alerted immediately so you can drop anything that you
are doing and go check on your bundle of joy.
• Make sure you don't get too loud: Thanks to it's sound sensors, the
Sproutling baby monitor will alert you if the noise levels are becoming
too loud for your baby - you wouldn’t like to wake him up from his nap
would you?
• Check on your baby anywhere: The information is constantly delivered
to the app so you can check on your baby wherever you are, whenever
you want. As extreme as it sounds, tell me its not comforting as a new
parent to be able to check the healthy and happy heart rate of your
most precious human 24/7. • Sleeping patterns predictions: So after some weeks collecting data, the app
will become good enough to start predicting when your kid will wake
up/ be hungry. This is perfect for parents as it will give them a good estimate of
the amount of time they have to well... do all the things they used to before the
baby came along.
• Mood Prediction: Know if she's calm, fussy, or angry before you walk into
the room.
• Charges wirelessly: Yes because when you are a parent you don’t even have
time to go find the charger and plug it into the wall socket. Well worry not! The
band actually charges wirelessly so all you have to do is place it on top of its
charging mat and you are done! The band will be ready for another day of
hard work before you even finish bathing you baby. **NOTE: This product has been so popular the first batch to have hit the market
have already sold out. You can join the waiting list and be alerted when the
product will be available again by going to their website: www.sproutling.com/
Motorola's Scout 5000 A Pet Viewer device soon due to hit the market this year
Ok, we are going for the dog lovers this
time. What if I told you the communications
giant Motorola has come out with a device
(well, they have announced that they will
be releasing the device in the upcoming
months) that will allow you to track, talk and
even see where your dog is and what it's
doing. Goes without saying, you can access
all of this multimedia information from your
mobile phone, wherever you are!
Just picture this: You are on your holiday
thousands of miles away from home and
you beloved mutt. It's 11PM and you are
about to head off to bed after an arduous
day of walking around touristic attractions,
and there's nothing more you'd love to do
that be able to wish Fido a good night...
Luckily for you it's 2015! All you have to do
is pull your smart phone out of your bag- take a quick look at your Facebook news feed, and head straight to Motorola Scout 5000's
application. With a couple of quick clicks you can record and send a
message to the Scout 5000 hardware (which hangs comfortably on
your pet's collar) this wonderful piece of equipment (which includes
microphone, speakers and video camera all packed into a compact
rectangular 'box') will play your message so that you can share your
true feelings with your pet, regardless of your location.
The coolest feature of the Scout 5000 is it's ability to live stream video
directly from the camera hanging from your pet's collar. What does
this mean? Well, basically, with a single tab on you mobile phone
screen, you will be able to instantly see the world through your dog's
eyes (in HD!). It has never been so easy to track, comfort and relate to
your beloved pet, regardless of geographical location (not to mention
the countless hours you will spend checking out the world from your
pet's perspective).
