ABOUT SAINT IGNATIUS HIGH SCHOOL
President : Fr. William Murphy S.J.
Principal: Mr. Peter Corrigan, Jr, '69
The school was opened on September 6, 1886, by German Jesuits from Buffalo,
New York, who responded to an invitation from Bishop Richard Gilmour to provide advanced
schooling for Cleveland's Catholic young men. Known as Saint Ignatius College, it was
modeled after the German Gymnasium and French Lycee. Students were admitted after six
years of grammar school and received a bachelor’s degree after a six-year course of studies.
There was no distinction between high school and college. The first A.B. degrees were
conferred in 1894.
In 1902 high school and college departments were established, and the high school program was
extended to four years. In 1923 the college department changed its name to John Carroll
University and in 1935 was moved into new buildings in University Heights. Saint Ignatius
High School remained at the original location.

Alma Mater
Saint Ignatius Fight Song
Our famed alma mater graces
On! Ignatius with your gold and blue,
Every shrine within our hearts
You're the best team that we ever knew;
With her unforgotten faces
You've got what it takes to win this game,
And the faith that she imparts.
Honor to your name! RAH! RAH! RAH!
Years in passing cannot sever
Fight, you Wildcats of Ignatius High!
Ties of new days from the old.
(Opponent)'s team can bid this game good-bye;
We're Ignatius men forever,
As we hail the blue and gold.
On the old beam now, you blue and gold team now,
And fight to victory!

A sophomore from Rocky River Middle School, Taylor Wolf is Chris
a firstKnoth
year varsity
forward. Inspired to play
hockey by the sport’s popularity in Rocky River, Wolfy is also a baseball player at St. Ignatius. A fan of
Miami (OH), Notre Dame and the Pittsburgh Steelers, Wolf hopes to go to either Notre Dame or a small prep
school. On the ice he notes his greatest accomplishment as a goal he scored, going coast to coast adding the
game winning tally with 2 seconds left to win the game (between the two top teams in the league). Off the
ice, Wolf is a leukemia survivor with a 3.4 GPA. At St. Ignatius he has gotten involved with the West Side
Catholic Center helping to disperse clothes and food to those in need in Ohio City. Speaking about his playing
style, he said he “makes things happen.” He also said that the best part of his game was his ability to adapt to
more experienced players, stating that “I might not go great at first, but give me a couple games and I’ll be at
that level.” Wolf sees himself as a scoring threat as well as a passing threat on the ice.

Junior (2011)
5’ 10” 175 lb.
Coach’s Notes: “Steady defenseman who played a ton as a sophomore last
year. Quick skater who can cover a lot of ground when he needs to.
Excellent student, quiet and humble young man. Future leader of the
hockey program.”
Pete Bobulsky is entering his second year on the varsity roster. Bobulsky is a resident of North Royalton and
a graduate of St. Albert the Great. A BC fan, Petey was inspired to play hockey by his grandparents. He
hopes to attend Marquette University in the future. Off the ice he currently has a 3.5 GPA and serves as a
pallbearer in the St. Joseph of Arimathea Pallbearer Society, and is also involved in GSLP. He noted that his
favorite thing about St. Ignatius is the many opportunities the school provides. On the ice, Pete scored three
points last year from his spot on defense. When asked what he considers to be his playing style, he called
himself a “quick, defensive-minded player.” Bobulsky worked out regularly during the offseason in
anticipation of this season.

Coach’s Notes: “Strongest kid on the team. Started his career at defense,
but was switched to forward in the middle of last season and really took
off. Plants himself in the slot and is tough to move. Scores a lot of Phil
Esposito-style ‘garbage’ goals, especially on the power play. Also has a
nice shot and can snipe from the top of the circles in. Provides quiet
leadership in his role as a captain.”
Jacob Riemenschneider is a graduate of St. Mark grade school in Lakewood. Remo, originally inspired to
play hockey by the Mighty Ducks and The Great One, worked out throughout the offseason to prepare for his
senior season. An alternate captain, Jacob participates in the Men of Regis and the badminton club at St.
Ignatius. As for his playing style he considers himself to be a scorer and a passer for the Cats. Jacob’s
favorite thing about St. Ignatius is his team. Carrying a 3.2 GPA, Remo hopes to continue playing hockey in
the future.

Coach’s Note: “Youngster looking to contribute as a sophomore. Will
learn much about the speed of the Red North in practice as well as in
games. Has good size and has done a nice job in the weight room.”
Ray Gajkowski is a first year forward from St. Mary’s (Berea). Gajkowski is a resident of North Royalton. A
fan of Blue Jackets star Rick Nash, Raymond hopes to go to Notre Dame in the future and hopes to play sports
in college. To prepare for the upcoming season he ran and lifted. Describing himself as “physical” and a
“grinder,” he adds that his favorite thing about St. Ignatius is its athletics. Off the ice he is involved in
Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) and plays rugby. He currently has a 3.2 cumulative GPA.

Coach’s Notes: “Sophomore defenseman who has excelled in the weight
room and impressed the coaches on the ice as well. Loves to hit,
especially when he pinches at the blue line. Has a good shot. Will get a
ton of experience this year; must get used to the speed of the top teams to
be a factor.”
Andrew Steed is a graduate of Lake Ridge Academy and a resident of North Olmsted. A Red Wings fan, he
remembers his mom taking him ice skating at age four; Steed was already using a mini stick to push her keys
around on the ice. He hopes to go to Miami (OH) in the future, looking to play hockey as a club sport or in a
Division I program. Steed notes that his greatest on ice accomplishment is playing in the state final in
Bantams. His playing style often involves being a passer in the defensive zone, a “defensive zone
defenseman.” He is “physical along the boards, and in front of the net.” He adds that the best part of his
game is “pinching and covering the defensive zone.” Steed has a 3.99 GPA, and is involved with the Arrupe
Homework Club. He lifted and went to Puck Masters during the offseason to prepare for the 09-10 campaign.

Coach’s Notes: “One of the more talented players in the state for his age.
Played varsity as a freshman and contributed immediately, including a hat
trick in the first game of the season against eventual state runner-up
Toledo St. John in the Ohio Jesuit Cup. Has all the tools to become a
dominant player in the league. Has a burning desire to win and never
gives up. Future face of the program.”
Paddy Spellacy, a Lakewood resident and Lakewood Catholic Academy graduate, is a Boston College and
Washington Capitals fan. Currently involved in Sophomore Service at the school, Paddy was inspired to play
hockey by his father, who also starred at Iggy. Although not involved in other clubs currently, his intense
preparation began with NHL 10, and ended in the weight room with strength and conditioning coach Joe
Eynon. On the ice he notes his four goals against Lake Catholic as his personal high point. Paddy’s favorite
thing about St. Ignatius is his class president (Michael Abood). He holds a 3.2 GPA currently and considers
himself “very physical” as both a passer and scorer.

Coach’s Notes: “Talented and energetic player who will benefit from
playing a full year at defense. Split time between forward and defense last
year as a freshman on varsity. Should get major time this year at D, as
well as time on both PK and PP. Has good hands and is a good skater.”
Michael Abood is a graduate of Peaceful Children Montessori. “Mr. President” (he’s president of the
sophomore class in the student senate) hopes to attend the University of Michigan in the future. He notes that
his dad, an assistant coach, inspired him to play hockey. His favorite professional players are Sergei Fedorov
and Georges Laraque. A part of Team Ohio, he calls himself a “dangler,” and is a physical player who can be
both a scorer and passer. A member of the student senate and the lacrosse team, Michael is also currently
involved in Labre. He notes that he loves “the whole school in general.” He currently maintains a 3.3 GPA.

Coach’s Notes: “Experienced forward with a ton of natural ability. Scored
some big goals for the team last year in his first extended action at the
varsity level. Pretty physical player even though he’s slender. Should be a
top-line player and one of the leading scorers on the team.”
John Jeziorowski is a graduate of St. Angela Merici. A Fairview Park native, he is the team’s only professed
Phoenix Coyotes fan. Jez would like to play club or juniors in the future, and would like to attend Miami in
the future as well. During the offseason he worked on his benching with strength coach Joe Eynon. Noting
his goal at the Q in 2008 as a personal achievement from previous seasons, he also works with the
Thanksgiving food drive, Malachi House, and Labre. Off the ice he was inspired to play hockey by his
parents and notes that his greatest achievement is getting accepted college. John considers himself a goalscorer. He also noted that “I love to hit people even though I am not the strongest kid.”

Coach’s Notes: “Checking-line forward who needs to continue to make
strides in the weight room. Quick skater with a pretty good shot. Will
take the body at times. Stays within himself, which is important in his
‘grinder’ role.”
A first year varsity player, Jason Petraska is a St. William graduate from Euclid. A Blue Jackets fan (Rick
Nash is his favorite player), his dad first inspired him to play hockey. He hopes to continue playing hockey in
college, calling John Carroll and Ohio State the places he will most likely go. Involved in Labre, Pallbearers,
and the Christmas food drive, Petraska does plenty of service off the ice. He considers his greatest on ice
achievement to be a shift in which he scored both shorthanded and even strength. Off the ice he considers the
teachers to be the best part of St. Ignatius. He says his greatest accomplishments off the ice are his grades, as
he holds a 3.7 GPA. Asked about his playing style, he called himself an “all around” player. During the off

Coach’s Notes: “First-year varsity guy who is a skillful offensive player

determine how much he plays this year. Has a bright future in the
program.”
Liam Geither is a first year varsity forward from Lakewood Catholic Academy. He is a Boston College and
Buffalo Sabres fan. His favorite player is Thomas Vanek. His father originally inspired him to play hockey.
He hopes to attend Miami (OH) in the future, possibly to play lacrosse. During the offseason, Geither lifted
and played through the summer to get ready for the upcoming season. Last year he led the JV team in goals.
Liam notes that scoring a game winning shootout goal in a youth league state tournament final was his best on
ice accomplishment. Off the ice he is proud of making it into Ignatius. His favorite thing about St. Ignatius is
“meeting new people, and playing hockey.” He currently has a 3.1 GPA. Asked his playing style he said

Colton Riemenschneider is a sophomore graduate of St. Mark in Lakewood. “Butters,” as some call
him, is a fan of Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins. His brother and the movie “The Mighty
Ducks” inspired him to play hockey. During the offseason, Riemenschneider is involved in lacrosse

enjoys the campus, football games, and sophomore class president and teammate Michael Abood at
St. Ignatius. “Butters” has a 3.47 GPA and he hopes to attend Minnesota or Ohio State to hopefully
play hockey or lacrosse. On the ice he said that he “makes plays” and is a grinder, passer, and
scorer. He added that the best part of his game is being a play maker. He also termed himself as
physical on the ice.

Coach’s Note: “Sophomore who will be getting his first taste of varsity
action. Has good size and has made great strides in the weight room. Has
a good slapshot from the point. Must be strong in the D zone to crack the
lineup on a regular basis.”
Will Smith is a sophomore graduate of Lakewood Catholic Academy. A fan of Martin St. Louis and the
Fighting Irish, his father first inspired him to play hockey. He hopes to attend Miami (OH), possibly to play
hockey, in the future. He is involved with Sophomore Service and the Thanksgiving food delivery at St.
Ignatius, and he views his greatest off the ice accomplishment as getting into Ignatius and playing hockey.
Smith has a 3.0 GPA and enjoys the campus and class opportunities offered at St. Ignatius. Asked his playing
style, he called himself a “playmaker,” adding that he is also physical. Over the off-season Smith played for
Team Ohio.

Coach’s Note: “Tri-captain who scored some huge goals for us in the
stretch run last year. Is very solid on his skates. Has done a tremendous
job in the weight room. Brings lunch-pail mentality to the rink and is not
afraid to mix it up in the corners. Hustles at all times and is always
looking for ways to improve his game. Good two-way player.”
Senior captain Nolan Schade is a senior from Roxboro Middle School. Lifitng and conditioning every other
day during the offseason has prepared him to improve on his 18 point 2008-2009 season. A member of the
Badminton Club who also serves the school by participating in the Labre ministry, Schade has a 3.5 GPA.
Asked his favorite thing about St. Ignatius, he is the only student to respond “the hot dog lady.” When asked
to describe his playing style he called himself a “physical grinder in the corners on the forecheck,” adding that
he is a better passer than shooter and that the best part of his game is the speed he brings to the ice. Schade is
a resident of Cleveland Heights and a fan of the Minnesota Gophers.

Coach’s Note: “Possesses marvelous puck-handling skills and has one of
the best shots in the region. Is tougher than people give him credit for.
Comes up big in big moments. Should score a lot from the point,
especially on the power play. Can carry the puck from end to end if need
be. Must trust his teammates and be willing to give the puck up in order to
get it back. Excellent student who takes accelerated math classes.”
Sam Nader is a North Olmsted native and an alum of North Olmsted Middle School. A fan of North
Dakota and Rick Nash, Sam was inspired to play hockey by his mom, who also plays. Nicknamed Caesar for
his haircut, he hopes to play club hockey at Marquette. During the off-season he participated in Labre,
Badminton Club, and worked to improve his game by playing a lot of hockey. Asked his favorite thing about
his school, he points to the freedom that a campus like St. Ignatius allows. Sam calls himself an “offensive
defenseman” who is physical when he needs to be. A passer and a scorer, his shot is the best part of his
game.

Coach’s Notes: “Energizer bunny, has a motor that never quits. One of
the fastest skaters on the team. Should be one of our top fore-checkers and
penalty killers. Super-positive kid who has all the intangibles and should
be a future leader in the program.”
Kevin Joseph is a graduate of St. Angela Merici and a resident of Fairview Park. His favorite player is Mario
Lemieux, and he loves the University of Michigan. KJ was inspired to play hockey as he watched the 2000
state championship game. He knew a lot of players on that team, and has since been playing hockey. During
the offseason Joseph lifted with Strength and Conditioning coach Joe Eynon, went to a CSC camp with Coach
Abood, and skated with Barons Coach Tim Alexander. Asked his playing style, he called himself a play
maker with speed and strength, adding that he can “pop a few goals here or there.” His greatest
accomplishment off the ice is simply getting into St. Ignatius. On the ice his greatest accomplishment
occurred when his brother passed him the puck to score a game winning goal. At St. Ignatius he has been a
part of Labre and WSCC. He notes his favorite thing about St. Ignatius is, as he explains “the tradition putting on the Ignatius jersey and representing my school.” Joseph holds a 3.3 GPA.

Christopher Knoth
Senior (2010)
6’ 0” 190 lb.
Coach’s Note: “Arguably our best skater in terms of balance and pure
stride. Solid defensive defenseman who has a good shot, as well. Makes
hard and accurate breakout passes. Our most responsible and reliable
defensive player. Great student and very conscientious young man who
went on a summer mission trip.”
Christopher Knoth is a graduate of St. Dominic in Shaker Heights. A fan of the Lake Erie Monsters and
Philippe Dupuis, he was inspired to play when he was three after his parents asked if he wanted to play. He
might play lacrosse in college and hopes to stay on the East Coast after leaving St. Ignatius. “Tooth”
(nickname because of his missing front tooth) played a lot of lacrosse to stay in shape and lifted three days a
week with a trainer over the summer to prepare for his senior campaign. He is involved with Labre, St.
Camillus, lacrosse, and the Hispanic Honors Society at Ignatius. He is a leader in the St. Joseph of Arimathea
Pallbearer Society. His greatest on ice achievement was making varsity as a sophomore. Asked his favorite
thing about St. Ignatius, he responded “the support and closeness of the student body and all the opportunities
available (sports, service, academics).” On the ice he adds “I’m a grinder. I get in the corners and get the puck
out. I play defense and make sure no one scores or touches my goalie.” Knoth has a 3.75 GPA.

Coach’s Notes: “Very talented forward who is maturing as a player on a

by example as a captain and is not afraid to be vocal if he needs to, either.”
Michael Wells is a St. Gregory alumnus from Lyndhurst. Wellsie is a Red Wings fan as well as a North
Dakota fan. On campus he is involved in Labre and the Pallbearer Ministry. He also considers the education
to be his favorite part about St. Ignatius. Michael, when asked of his playing style, mentioned good hands,
calling himself a hard worker. Inspired by teammate Sam Nader’s snipes, Wells is known more as a sniper on
the offensive end of the ice. Over the offseason he lifted, ran, and worked out to prepare for his senior

Matt Kovesdy, a Rocky River native, is a graduate of Rocky River Middle School. A fan of Martin Brodeur,
Boston College, and Miami (OH), he was inspired to play hockey by his brother, who currently plays college
hockey. In the future he hopes to play club hockey and go to Miami (OH). This offseason he lifted and went
through many goalie sessions to get even better after a few starts in net during his freshman year. He also
played for the St. Ignatius lacrosse team this past season. At school he is involved in the Wildcat Movers, the
Arrupe Homework Club, and worked with SEP last year. He considers himself to be a butterfly style goalie.

Coach’s Notes: “Made a remarkable comeback after not making the roster
last season. Has matured both on and off the ice. Will see action in spot
starts and in relief work. Technically sound goalie. Very proud of his
turnaround.”
Josh Potts is entering his first year with the varsity team. A graduate of St. Peter Lorain, he is a fan of Notre
Dame and the New Jersey Devils. His inspiration to play comes from the now defunct Cleveland
Lumberjacks and his father. He hopes to attend Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University; he also hopes to play
hockey. During the off season he followed a simple routine – “Lift, Lift, Lift… Eat, Eat, Eat.” Off the ice he
is a member of the Flight Club and the Investment Club, he also works with Arrupe. Asked his favorite thing
about St. Ignatius, he said “the community as a whole. The teachers and the staff are great!” On the ice he
looks to his assist in his first varsity scrimmage as his greatest accomplishment so far. His style between the
pipes is the butterfly style. His credo is, “Stay up, out, and even to the puck. Be aggressive.”

After three consecutive trips to the Elite Eight of the state tournament, the 2009-10 St. Ignatius
varsity hockey team hopes to break through this year by reaching the Final Four. This year’s
edition of the varsity squad will feature a strong core of battle-tested veterans and an infusion of
young talent looking to contribute and gain experience. Leading the offensive attack will be
seniors Michael Wells, Asa Frebes, Nolan Schade, Jacob Riemenschneider, and John
Jeziorowski. Juniors Kevin Joseph and Jason Petraska, as well as sophomores Paddy Spellacy,
Liam Geither, Taylor Wolf, Colton Riemenschneider, and Ray Gajkowski, should add scoring
punch to the lineup.
On the defensive side, seniors Chris Knoth and Sam Nader anchor the blue line, with junior Pete
Bobulsky and sophomores Michael Abood, Will Smith, and Andrew Steed chipping in at the
point. Sophomore goaltender Matt Kovesdy takes over in the net, where he will be ably backed
up by junior Josh Potts.
Last year, the Wildcats won three tournaments and finished runner-up in two others on their way
to a 28-9 record and a #2 seed in the sectional tournament, all while playing one of the toughest
schedules in the Midwest. This year’s equally tough schedule features divisional home-andhome sets with archrivals St. Edward, Padua, and University School, plus two games each
against the always-tough Lake Catholic Cougars and the Walsh Jesuit Warriors. The non-league
schedule features games versus perennial regional powers Culver Military Academy, Hamilton
(Indiana) Southeastern, Toledo St. John, Gilmour, Meadville (Pa.), University of Detroit Jesuit,
Strongsville, and Sylvania Northview, among others.
The St. Ignatius coaches and players invite students, parents, alumni, and other fans to cheer
them on as they look to build on the success of the last couple years and establish a program of
lasting greatness. Wildcat home games are played at Brooklyn Ice Rink, located on Memphis
between Tiedeman and Ridge.
