WITH HALLOWEEN APPROACHING,
IT SEEMS LIKE A GREAT TIME TO THINK ABOUT SUGAR.
Today, sugar has replaced fat as a hot topic in health
news and certainly in the nutrition world. Newer
research suggests that sugar is far more harmful
to our health than previously thought. However,
back in the 1980s, most of the diet and weight
loss recommendations were for low fat diets. As
a result, the food industry reformulated many of
their products in order to provide all sorts of low
fat cookies, crackers, cereals, sauces/dressings, etc.
The problem was - fat tastes really good. However,
now we want low fat products that are still tasty.
So, sugar and sodium were increased in many low
fat products to keep them flavorful. Unfortunately,
it’s not just low fat products, but many convenience
foods/processed foods that are loaded with sugar as
well. Consequently, most of us are consuming a great
deal of sugar on a daily basis – sometimes knowingly
in desserts and sugary beverages, but many times
unknowingly in savory foods. The average American is
consuming about 88 grams (22 teaspoons) of added
sugar a day and our children are consuming far more!
So, how much sugar is ok? The American Heart
Association recommendations are: Women 24
grams/day (6 teaspoons) and Men 36 grams/
day (9 teaspoons). A can (12 oz) of regular soda
contains approximately 38 grams of sugar or 9 1/2
teaspoons. One regular soda exceeds the daily sugar
recommendations for both men and women, so
eliminating soda and sugary drinks is one of the best
ways to cut back on sugar. A couple of important
points to remember are: These recommendations are
for added sugar, not sugar naturally found in fruit,
unflavored milk and plain yogurt and added sugar
includes all types of sugar (remember from last SCOPE
there are many different names for sugar). To get a
list of all the various names for sugar, just Google it.
Be on the look out for how much sugar is in foods you
wouldn’t expect, such as BBQ sauce, spaghetti sauce,
soup, yogurt, salad dressings, or granola bars.
Now, to get through Halloween without going
overboard try these suggestions:
•Don’t buy candy early. If you do, keep it out of sight.
Store in some inconvenient place so you’re not
constantly tempted.
•Enjoy one piece. Eat it mindfully verses just
shoveling it in.
•Don’t buy your favorite types of candy.
•Give away any left over candy and don’t sneak any
from your kids!
