News Flash: Just last week, the Food
and Drug Administration issued a serious
warning. "Taking party drugs advertised
on the Internet or in muscle magazines
could kill you." The FDA has warned consumers about products containing the
drug gamma butyrolactone
(GBL) or
gamma hydroxybutyric (GHB) (which I
have reported on in the past). These
products are sold in health food stores as
sleep aids. The FDA and I want you to
know that these chemicals are associated with 122 adverse health incidents and
at least three deaths. Remember that
GHB was labeled the "date rape" drug!
Blue Nitro contains the dangerous substance GBL. Now beware ... to skirt the
FDA, manufacturers
are substituting
another chemical, 1.4 butanediol (BD),
which the FDA warns is just as dangerous as GHB. When ingested, BD can
cause serious complications
including
breathing difficulties, unconsciousness,
vomiting, seizures and death. If you mix
this drug with alcohol or other recreational drugs, you will probably be risking your
life! So if you recognize any of these
products ... stay away! This stuff is not to
be messed with! If you would like any

Instead of spending money on a drug
to help you relax, why not wash away the
turmoil of everyday life and keep your
body in tune with massage? Lots of us
who work out use massage as part of our
weekly routine to keep the body in check.
We know that stretched and relaxed muscles, as a result of massage, are able to
perform at their peak. Massage can consist of systematic stroking, rubbing and
kneading of the soft tissues of the body in
an effort to induce a state of total relaxation. Despite misconceptions, massage
is becoming more accepted as a legitimate means to relieve minor medical
conditions. Massage has been shown to
increase
and maintain
stability
and
enhance performance in all the body's
major systems. The muscular, skeletal,
circulatory, nervous and respiratory systems all can be positively affected by
massage. I have been receiving massage therapy weekly for the past 8 years.
I began to use it when I had decided to
dive into physical fitness. I noticed that,
as a result of massage, my flexibility and
overall physical as well as mental health
increased.
There are many forms of massage

being applied here in the U.S. and abroad
by trained practitioners. Here's the lowdown on some of the most popular ....
Traditional
European
massage
includes methods based on Western concepts of anatomy and physiology and soft
tissue manipulation. This type of massage was brought to the United States in
the 1850's by George and Charles Tyler,
two doctors from New York. European
massage consists of effleurage (the long
flowing or gliding strokes, usually towered the heart, tracing the outer contours
of the body), petrissage (strokes that roll
or knead the tissue), friction (circular
strokes) vibration and tapotement.
Swedish massage is by far the most
predominant example of European massage that is most common here in the
U.S. It was developed by Per Henrik Ling
in Sweden in the 1830's. Swedish massage uses a system of long gliding
strokes, kneading and friction on the
superficial layers of muscles. It is based
on circulatory stimulation and can be
quite vigorous.
Eselen massage is a modern variation
developed at the Eselen Institute in Big
Sur, California. It's focus is not so much
on relieving the muscle tension or
increasing the circulation but rather on
deeper states of relaxation. Eselen is
usually practiced with slow, rhythmic and
hypnotic movements to put the client into
a state of total relaxation.
Neuromuscular massage is a form of
deep tissue massage that utilizes finger
pressure to specific muscles. It releases
stress at trigger points and knots of muscles where tension exists. This form of
massage helps break the cycle of spasm
and pain in a muscle. Trigger point massage and myotherapy are varieties of
neuromuscular massage.
Deep tissue massage is just that. The
fibers of the muscles are stroked, poked,
or rubbed with the fingers, thumbs and
elbows. Sometimes
the strokes are
directed against the orientation of the
muscle. This type of massage can be
painful, but is ultimately therapeutic.
Sports massage is a combination of
Swedish and deep-tissue massage and
is used by athletes before an event to

energy blockages.

A biophysicist named Ida Rolf developed "Rolfing" in the 1940's and 50's.
Rolfing involves deep tissue work while
reordering the body so as to bring its
major segments into a more perfect
alignment. Rolfing involves manipulation
of the fascia, the flexible tissue that
envelops
our muscles
and muscle
groups. Rolfing usually takes place over
a series of treatments that each deal with
a particular part of the body. If it sounds
kind of painful, trust me, it is.
Other methods of Western rnassage
technique are The Alexander Technique,
Hellerwork, The Rosen Method, Trager,
Feldenkrais Method and Ortho-Bionomy.
Oriental methods of massage consist
of Accupressure
and Shiatsu. These
forms of massage use the fingers to
apply very strong pressure to specific
points on the body, similar to acupuncture
points. The goal is to achieve a balanced
flow of chi through the meridians (points
on the body). Where tension is being
centered, chi is impaired and these areas

nce again, it is time to expand our horizons with a little diversion from the
dance floor with a few items that recently
found their way to the FRESH BEATS desk.
We often travel the world and back again
only to find what we've been looking for is
right in our own back yard.
In Texas, it's never been a secret that all
one needs to do for a dose of great
music-especially the blues-is to hop on 135 and head to Austin. And when you get
there, you might try looking for a stage
where 19-year old Jake Andrews
is
appearing. Andrews picks up where great
guitar slingers of old such as Johnny
Winter and Stevie Ray Vaughn leave off
and does so with compelling conviction
and electrifying virtuosity.
The proof is in the pudding of Jake's
debut album Time to Burn. The album was
produced by Grammy winner John Porter,
whose list of credits include Taj Mahal,
The Smiths and B.B. King. Backed by
only a rhythm section or bass and drums,
Jake works a fretboard frenzy through 13
delectable musical morsels ranging from
reconstructed blues classics and soulful
ballads to crunchy modern rock. Already a
hometown hero in Austin-playing since the
age of 8 and battling it out on stage With
the likes of Buddy Guy and Albert
King-Jake is now poised to take the U.S
by storm. The debut single "Time To Burn;
is already climbing the Rock charts. And
whether you're a fan of the blues or not
there's no denying that this guy's got it ali
going on as an artist. Let this album serve

back alley serenades, embedded folk
melodies, antique popular soundtracks of

Sneak Preview To Benefit Dallas' Gay &

DALLAS - A benefit screening of the
PBS film After Stonewall: From the Riots to
the Millennium will be previewed at 8:00
p.m. on Wednesday, June 2 in Dallas'
Lakewood Theatre (Abrams Rd. and

After Stonewall will chronicle the history
of the gay movement from the Stonewall
riots to the present and is narrated by gay

those at the forefront of the gay movement
and explore how the AIDS epidemic redirected its goals. The film, a sequel to Before
Stonewall, will feature interviews with nationally known leaders and local activists in the
gay and lesbian movement.
"We are especially excited that David
Mixner and Phil Johnson, both featured in
the film will join us for the evening," said
Craig McDaniel, Center board member. Mr.
Mixner, from Washington D.C., is a well
known corporate and political strategist,

This week's Memorial Day
cover man is definitely the
stuff that memories are made
of. Originally from The Azores,
Portugal, this 27-year old single Scorpio now resides in
Houston. Along with an obvious dedication to working
out, Colin keeps in shape
with a steady regimen of
hockey, indoor rockclimbing
and dancing. And since we
are celebrating Memorial Day
this weekend, Colin is dedicating his appearance in TWT
to the memory of his greatgrandmother Miriam Solay,

of this year.

bites? Pride month can bring in a bevy of sexual opportunities for proud Virgins who know
the meaning of the word generous. But waste
not, want not cousin. Don't fritter resources on
wasteful
dalliances.
Find out if they will
respect you in the morning before you blow
the wad.
LIBRA (September 24 - October23)
Pride
month teaches you a valuable lesson on the
give and take of relationships. Proud Libras can
be very cavalier about needing companionship and in doing so can fail to balance their
personal freedom with the needs of partners.
Now you may receive a powerful lesson on
the importance of sharing. Wasn't it Sartre who
said, "In love, one plus one equals one"?
SCORPIO (October 24 - November 22) Sometimes a bolt out of the blue is just what is
needed to knock down barriers and saw
through mental blocks. Expect such a bolt in
Pride month when projects that might have
held you up or brought you down suddenly
go your way. Queer Scorps should not be
afraid to open up their closet door and air the
darn thing out. You have nothing to fear but
your chains.

GEMINI (May 22 - June 21) Friends figure
prominently in your life in Pride month. They
open up new vistas and bring you to new levels of enlightenment. Queer Twins can enter
this wonderland
naively wide eyed or they
can try to boss the course. I suggest you allow
yourself to be taken by the hand. Think of it as
a trip to the moon on gossamer wings and not
just one of those things.
CANCER (June 22 - July 23) Pink Crabs may
have the professional rug pulled out from
under them as career changes come fast and
furious. This shifting of the corporate landscape is frightening, but altogether necessary.
Begging for your tender vittles from the fat cats
is often good for the soul and gives you a cold
dose of reality for future survival. Adjust now
to rule the roost later.
LEO (July 24 - August 23) Gay Lions are in
