CAVE PAINTING by Candie Cooper www.candiecooper.com Age Range: 7 to 12 Grade Range: 2 to 6 Skill Level: Moderate Appropriate for These Special Events: Every Day and Rainy Days Supports Subject Area(s) of: Social Studies, Language Arts – e.g. step by step instructions, Visual Arts MATERIALS NEEDED: - 1 Elmer’s Guide-Line Tri-fold Foam Display Board, 18” x 24” - Sponges, 2-4 - Folk Art Acrylic Paint by Plaid®, 2 oz. bottles 2502 Rusted Pipe 2561 Steel Grey 2577 Toasted Vanilla 939 Butter Pecan - Elmer’s® School Glue - Sand (Activa®Scenic Sand, 1lb.) 1-2 colors - Sakura® Cray-Pas® Oil Pastels Time needed for project: 1 hr. 20 min. – 1 hr. 30 min. DIRECTIONS: 1. Paint one side of the tri-fold with shades of brown and grey with sponged to look like a cave wall. Layering colors with sponges creates a good textured effect. 20 min. 5-10 min. dry 2. After the paint has dried, sponge on Elmer’s Glue in a few patches around the tri-fold and sprinkle sand on top for a rocky, sandy texture. You can use your hands to spread the sand around. 10 min. + 10 min. dry 3. Wait ten minutes to make sure the Elmer’s Glue has dried. Knock extra sand off the board by tapping it outside on the ground or over newspaper. 5 min. 4. Use a pencil to sketch out a cave painting scene. Many cave paintings show herds of cattle or horses, people, and simple landscape elements. 10 min. 5. Go over the pencil with Cray-pas in black, red, and brown shades. They can be smeared around or left rough. 15 min.
