116 Volvelle VOLVELLE INSTRUCTIONS Cut on all of the solid lines Do nothing on the placeholder lines. Score and fold on all of the dashed lines. Elmer’s Glue 118 Use Elmer’s glue on all TABS. Use glue stick to laminate images or decorative paper. You will need these parts: 2A No glue goes in the shaded area 1B 2B 1A Please read this before proceeding: ! Decorating your structure directly with drawing, rubber stamps or pochoir is the easiest method, and most guaranteed to be successful. If you do decide to glue an image onto the structure, please refer to the last page of these instructions. Making sure that the printed side remains up, slide pieces 1A and 1B together so neither tab is showing. Step 1 1A 1B Step 2 Carefully turn the pieces over, making sure you don’t shift them. They should look like this... Place a yellow sticky note across the back as shown, to keep the pieces together while you illustrate them. This is what the parts should look like when they are put together. 119 VOLVELLE INSTRUCTIONS Make your image in the circle area. This will be the first image that you see. Step 3 Remove the yellow sticky paper and set these pieces aside. Put pieces 2A and 2B together as shown so no tab is showing. Put a very small line of glue on the shaded area at the top of part 2A and press the top of 2B onto it. Too much glue will give you lots of problems! This will be the second image that you see. Make your image in the inner circle Step 5 You can put words or designs around the outer edge of the circle To assemble: Step 6 Slide 1A over 2B and under 2A as shown. Step 9 To glue the structure into your book, turn it over and put a small amount of Elmer’s glue in the area indicated by the shaded spot in the example. ! Make sure that you don’t get glue in the lower area where the mechanism moves around! E s lme G r’ lu e Using Elmer’s glue, put a small dot of glue on Tab 2a, and attach it to the underside of 2b. er’s Elm lue G Step 8 This is the back side of the structure! VOLVELLE INSTRUCTIONS addendum 121 If you are going to glue an image on the structure: Step 1 Step 2 Size your image to 3½” by 3½” . If your image is rectangular, you may need to crop it. Step 4 Step 5 Step 6 tool. Click and drag the ‘handles’ on the image to crop it to size. Using the laminated Volvelle Image Positioning Template, frame your image in the circle. Trace a circle onto the front of your image in pencil. Step 3 When you click on the image, another tool bar appears. Position the circle over the artwork you want to use Trace the circle with a pencil Cut the image circle out with scissors Fold your image in half across the image. Use a ruler to draw a line along the fold line Cut on the fold line Cut the image circle out, using scissors. Fold the image in half across the image, making sure the fold is horizontal. Turn the circle over and use a ruler to draw a line on the fold line in pencil. Use scissors to cut on the pencil line. Use glue stick to laminate the two pieces onto the two halves of your structure. BE SURE all of your edges are glued down COMPLETELY!!! 1B 1A
