The BowlMor AMF U.S.
Open comes to Dallas, November 1-8. The event will be held
at AMF Showplace Garland,
a 58 lane bowling center in
Garland, TX. It has not been
hosted in the Dallas area since
1976 when it was held in Grand
Prairie at Forum Bowl. Paul
Moser defeated Jim Frazier 226195 to take that title. The event
was not held last year, so Wes
Malott will be the defending
champion after defeating Jason
Belmonte 214-156 in Columbus,
OH in 2013.
The U.S. Open title is the
chalice of titles. It has eluded
some of the greatest players
in our sport. The format is
long. The pattern is grueling.
And the field is the toughest
around. The U.S. Open is not
only a tough condition; it is
tough on the body and mental
state. Bowlers from all walks
of life bowl this event because
it is on their bucket list. Some
leave enjoying the experience

– Following the announcement
of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic
Committee (TOC) this morning, World Bowling is saddened
to announce that the sport of
bowling has not been recommended for inclusion in the
2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

What started out as the
sport’s greatest achievement
quickly turned into one of the
sport’s greatest injustices. Over
thirty years later, thanks to
some extraordinary people, the
wrong has, in at least some
ways, been righted, though the
travesty can never be masked.
July 1, 1982. What seemed
before to be an unobtainable feat was accomplished.

The DFW branch of the Amateur Bowlers Tour, or ABT as it
is known, is the new sponsor of
the Live Stream Schedule in The
Bowling News.
The ABT is a tournament
bowling club that was founded
in 1977 in Southern, CA. In the
last 38 years they have become
the largest organized club in the
country, one that has paid out
over $134,000,000, even more
than the PBA has.
The DFW branch started up
two years ago, with Regional
Director Andrew Cohen coming
onboard not long after creation.
In that short time, they have
hosted over 60 tournaments and
awarded $161,000 in prize fund
money.

The approach is unique.
We have seen it enough lately
to know there is no question
who it is. How, you ask?
It’s definitely a 21st century
approach with a twist of the
torso before the release, but
what happens at the very end
that gives it away. A hop. The
hop. And don’t worry, it’s not
going anywhere soon. More on
that later.
Shawn Maldonado is
easily the hottest bowler in the
country right now. Competing
in the PBA Southwest Region
against such familiar names
as Wes Malott, Mike Scroggins, Nathan Bohr, and fellow
Houstonian D. J. Archer, the
29-year-old Maldonado has
done something I can’t recall
hearing about in my thirty-plus
years of PBA Regional play.
Not very often, a player
wins three regionals in a
row. It’s happened a couple of
times, but that’s it. Never can
anyone remember four wins in
a row, until now. With several
clutch games in match play,
Maldo won his seventh career
regional title, the PBA Dallas
Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeons
Southwest Open on September
20.
The other three were the
three previous Southwest
Regionals on August 23,
August 30, and September 13.
That makes four, alright. But
how has he done this? In a JPA
interview last Friday prior to
the start of the PBA Tomball
Southwest Open, Maldonado
told me it’s a combination of
things. It starts with a passion
for the game.
“It really started with the
2013 PBA World Series of Bowling, the first national stops I
bowled. I knew right there that
my level of play had to change.
I wanted to get to that higher
level so bad, I was going to put
into whatever I kind of work
needed to get there. I’d always
worked out and worked on my
game, but this was different, I
worked even harder. The feelings I had were much stronger.
I always had a passion for
bowling, but now that I was on
a professional level, bowling
against the best guys in the
world, I wanted to get better
that much more. That paid off
at the following World Series of
Bowling in 2014 with finishing
ninth in the World Championships and a fifth place finish
making my first TV finals in
Japan,” Maldonado said.

covered a reward. It was the
feeling of extreme accomplishment, something he craved
and wanted to not only make
another show, but to win
against the best in the world.
“It felt great and wanted to
go back. It was like my drug,
I had to get back in that top
five category. So I worked even
harder, had my ups and downs
in the Roth/Holman Doubles
in Milwaukee, USBC Masters,
and the Tournament of Champions, but I really didn’t get
down on myself.
By that statement alone, he
has avoided a common pitfall
among tour bowlers, especially
newer players. Maldonaldo
explains further.
“I don’t get down on these
things, I just sit down and
figure out what I need to make
myself better whether it be
mentally, physically, or both. I
like to analyze what it’s going
to take to get me to that next
level.”
Although he says he didn’t
do well individually in the
Roth/Holman Doubles, but
his partner, DJ Archer sure
did. They each made another
TV finals appearance in their
young tour careers, finishing
fifth.
“DJ bowled incredible that
week, I was basically on his
back the whole time. All I
could do was get to the pocket
and hope I didn’t drive him
down,” Maldonado added.
Another confidence boost
came in the PBA Summer
Swing Badger Open. After
getting helpful advice from
Storm/Roto Grip Del Ballard,
Maldonado rolled back-to-back
240’s in the final two games
to make yet another show. He
gave Walter Ray Williams,
Jr. all he could handle before
falling 232-223.
Despite that loss, the
confidence kept building as
whatever shots needed to be
made, whatever score needed
to be posted, he would do it.
That premise started to play
out in this record winning
streak. Also keep in mind, he
is not running away with leads
deep into Sunday match play.
He trailed Nathan Bohr before
finally catching him in the
position round match to defend
his title in the PBA Greenville
Southwest Open, presented by
DV8. Maldo had to defeat Wes
Malott, Chris Barnes, and DJ
Archer before winning the PBA
Grand Hotel, Casino, & Resort
Southwest Invitational for win
#2. He got by Dino Castillo by
81 pins for the third win, the
PBA McAlester, OK Southwest
Open, presented by Columbia
300, another as defending
champion.
Before the fourth tournament, the PBA Dallas Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeons Southwest Open, Malott told him he
had bad news for Maldo.
“I kinda know what he was
going at, but thought it may
have been they couldn’t bowl
the Longview Doubles tournament anymore. That wasn’t it.
I was humming and hawing,
then said, I’m not winning
this one. “Nope,”said Malott,
“you’re finishing second at this
one, “Maldonado explained.
They traded the lead during
match play before Malott pulled
ahead by nearly 200 pins.
Then a couple of bad games
shrank the lead to 38 pins. A
big game in the next to last
match increased the lead to
138. Returning to a pair he shot
a 180 game earlier, the position
round match was a pure grind
for him, shooting 210. Malott
shot 279 and even with the
bonus pins, it was not enough
to stop the fourth win. They
did finish one-two, but not in
the order Malott had predicted.
He analyzes his own game,
but not during competition.
That happens off the lanes.
He knows his own game well
enough to possess a problemsolving method that is firing
on all cylinders right now.
And the distinctive hop after
the release? Not going away
anytime soon. He’s tried throwing without it and the carry
percentage drops. But it was
an observation during a match
with Chris Barnes that gives us
a little more insight into this
streak.

Maldonado led Saturday’s 10
games of qualifying and won
his first two matches of the 16game round robin finals before
faltering, losing his next three
games. Castillo and Malott took
turns at the top of the leader
board before Maldonado pulled
comfortably ahead of Malott
by winning 9 of his final 11
matches. Malott won the final
game position round match,
279-218, to narrow Maldonado’s
final margin of victory to
38 pins and to stay ahead of
Scroggins and Castillo.
Maldonado earned $5,000
with the victory, Malott
collected $2,800 for second,
Scroggins $2,000 for third and
Castillo $1,500 for fourth.

respects the TOC’s decision and
believes that bowling’s time
to join the Olympic Movement
will come sooner rather than
later. The process undergone
over the past few months was
valuable and tangible recommendations will be taken away
to strengthen the sport of
bowling in the future.

said “It was a great opportunity
to have been considered as
one of the final eight sports
from the initial list of 26. For
World Bowling this remains a
huge milestone in pursuing our
Olympic quest and we believe

Due to what the American
Bowling Congress (ABC)
deemed as unfit conditions,
Allison’s perfect series was not
certified. What should have
been forever recorded in the
annals of bowling history was,
in the ABC’s mind, voided.
Over the course of the past
thirty plus years, many attempts have been made to get
Allison’s 900 series recognized.
According to Andrea GageWerren, General Manager of La
Habra 300 Bowl, and the lead
person behind Allison’s 900
series ring presentation, these
attempts have been made as
recently as 2013. All of which,
though, have been to no avail;
the United States Bowling
Congress (USBC), formerly
ABC, refuses to budge.
It was recently after the
USBC’s decision to uphold
its ruling on Allison that
Gage-Werren first started
looking into personalized 900
rings for Allison. According
to Gage-Werren, though, the
USBC was not happy with that.
Eventually, after removing the
USBC logo and replacing it
with a La Habra 300 Bowl logo,
the company began designing
Allison’s ring, a process that
Gage-Werren says took several
months.
The 900 ring presented by

When asked why she felt
obligated to have this ring
designed for Allison, GageWerren said that, to her, it’s
not an obligation, but, rather,
an honor. “I just feel that he is
responsible for so much of La
Habra 300 Bowl’s history,” says

Gage-Werren, “and he continues to do so much for this
bowling alley...it was really an
honor for me to be able to give
him the ring he deserved.”
Though she admits that it
was an honor to be the one
who had the opportunity
to present Allison his ring,
Gage-Werren states that, in her
opinion, it should have been
done by the USBC over thirty
years ago. “The majority of
the bowling world supports
his (Allison’s) 900 as the first
one,” says Gage-Werren, “and
I can tell you that I am not the
first one to offer such a thing
(honoring Allison’s feat in
some way).”
While what Gage-Werren
and La Habra 300 Bowl did
for Allison does not make up
for the ABC/USBC’s decision,
there is no denying that their
amazingly generous act is a
major step in the right direction and the selfless act that
they have done is something to
be admired.

is still on display at Columbia
300’s headquarters in Hopkinsville, KY.

“I am ecstatic about the
growth in DFW. It is one of the
fastest growing branches, which
is a tribute to the DFW bowling
scene. So many pros have come
out of this area. We’re fortunate
to have wonderful GM’s that
provide their centers, and the
USBC has been very helpful too,”
said Cohen.
The ABT has two membership
levels, Standard and Gold, with
Gold providing the lowest per
squad entry fee. The tournaments handicap structure is
70% of 225, with the maximum
handicap of 52 pins.
So far this year, they have
hosted 30 tournaments, with
the next two tournaments being
held at the ITRC in Arlington on
November 1st and December 5th.
The cool thing about those
two events is that they are being
filmed and live-streamed by ReeInvent Films, which also made
the cult bowling comedy, “We’ve
Got Balls” which was released
earlier this year.
ABT also hosts several
national tournaments each year
with prize funds that range from
$30,000 - $100,000. Truly great
money for their members.
“We try to give the bowlers what they want and are
completely transparent which
they appreciate,” added Cohen.
“One added bonus is awarding a

Krueger, Director of PBA, as to
what his thoughts were on the
upcoming event. “I am very
excited to watch the event.
The PBA or USBC haven’t used
the dress lanes once a day and
bowl 3 squads in over 20+
years. If USBC uses the old
school philosophy of not revealing the pattern until practice
day, it will definitely test the
bowler’s ability. I am just
excited the U.S. Open is back!”

Rick Irvine is one very
excited coach.
After many conversations
with school administrators,
and just a little bit of luck,
Irvine has brought high school
bowling to the rapidly-growing
Frisco ISD.
He will be the Head Coach
at Centennial High School, the
first high school in Frisco to
have a bowling program.
“We have a bunch of kids
in our youth program here at
Strikz that are very talented
and deserve a place to showcase their talent,” said Irvine.
Frisco plans to have three of
their eight schools participate
in high school bowling this
year, Centennial, Heritage and
Lone Star, but student-athletes
from other schools are able to
join the teams as this is a co-op
sport.
“I’m hoping that we get
great participation and the
other schools get the bowling
bug,” he added.
“Strikz has really opened
their doors to high school
bowling and youth programs
over the last couple of years

scholarship opportunities for
them,” he added.

title and took the top prize of
$1,240 with the Mega Pot in the
Amateur Bowlers Tour tournament held September 27th at
the International Training and
Research Center in Arlington.
He managed to pull this win
out on a tough pattern (ABT #8
36 ft).
David Flores finished second
for $150. Jay Turner Jr. cashed
for $140 in third place. Nancy
Turner received $90 for fourth
and Kam Mowstowfi took last
cash in 5th place for $85.
This is our 30th tournament for 2015 tying last year’s
tournaments. Gustavo was
also the winner of the “We’ve

are fully immersed in the
DFW pro shop market again
after selling their controlling
interest to Rudy Garcia Sr. a
few years back. They made
a deal with Garcia to get two
shops back and will maintain a
“great working relationship,” as
Ballard put it.
The Ballards have rebranded their two pro shops at
Brunswick Zone Watauga and
BRC Westcreek as Ballard’s
Bowling Academy Pro Shop’s.
Chad Newman will be the
General Manager and they have
added Geoffrey Young as the
Manager at Westcreek.
“We brought Geoffrey into
the family, but still want him
to continue bowling competitively so that he is actively
involved in the sport, Chad is
the GM based out of Watauga,
but you will see him at both
shops,” Ballard added.
The Ballards decided to
sell the controlling interest to
Garcia after Del started having
health issues but now that he
is doing better and Carolyn is
working from home for Turbo
Grips, the timing was right for

add new formats and forums
for our bowlers.

venues in 2015 and beyond,

1. Tournament is a non sanctioned handicap mixed tournament. Tournament
director has the right to refuse any bowlers or entry. Tournament director has
the right to adjust any bowlers average.
2. No exempt pro bowlers will be allowed to bowl. Violation of this rule will
disqualify the individual and the team members as well. No Money will be
refunded.
3. Team maximum average is 1000. Team must consist of 3 men and 2 women,
4 men and 1 woman or vice-versa.
4. Total scratch and handicap series will determine where a team places.

5. Bowlers will use one of the following averages in this order: Current ITA
average based on 36 games as of Nov. 1st, 2015 72 game ITA average.

average or Current average as of Nov 20th 2015 with 30 games. All others will
bowl scratch. (210) Bowlers without an ITA avg. will have a max handicap of
40 for men and 60 for ladies per game.

Longview, TX - The East
Texas Open completed its tenth
year on July 26th and is hosted
by Oil Bowl in Longview, TX.
This year the Kegel Sunset
Strip lane conditions were used
for competition.
The tournament hosted 78
teams, 159 doubles, and 317
singles entries during the two
week event with bowlers from
Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas
and Oklahoma.
A prize fund of $17,000 was
paid out to our winners which
included $2,500 in added
money from Oil Bowl and Roto
Grip.

will be sold to raise money in
support of the efforts to find a
cure for breast cancer.
Pickford, who lost his
mother Valerie to breast cancer
in September 2001, and Troup,
whose grandmother died from
the disease in 2010 and whose
mother is a breast cancer survivor, are leading the Team Fish
effort to raise money as part
of the national October Breast
Cancer Awareness month
campaign. The special breast
cancer t-shirt can be ordered
through the Team Fish page on
Facebook. Orders are now being accepted. All proceeds from
the t-shirt sales will be donated
to Susan G. Komen for the Cure
through the bowling family’s
Bowl for the Cure program.

PBA’s 2014 Rookie of the
Year, Marshall Kent of Yakima,
Wash., won a pair of gold medals, a silver and a bronze, for
Team USA in the Pan American
Bowling Confederation Men’s
Championships at AMF Bolera
Paradise Lanes in San Juan,
Puerto Rico, in mid-September.
Kent won the all-events
gold medal and teamed with
fellow PBA star Sean Rash
and amateur John Janawicz
to win trios. Janawicz also
won singles and the Masters
finale. Team Colombia, with
PBA members Andres Gomez,
Jaime Gonzalez, Jaime Monroy,
Manuel Otalora and non-member Santiago Mejia, won the
team title by 61 pins over the
favored U.S. team (Bill O’Neill,
Chris Barnes, Janawicz, Kent,
Rash and Tommy Jones).
Barnes won silver in singles
and trios with O’Neill and
Jones. O’Neill and Jones won
silver in doubles with Kent
and Rash claiming the bronze
medal.
