Solo, officially named as Surakarta, has emerged as the new
shopping center in Indonesia. With its motto as The Spirit of
Java, Solo offers numerous Javanese ethnical stuffs to every

Klewer Market
This place is another center for shopping Batik in Indonesia after Beringharjo Market. It also

Triwindu Market
It is another market which offers various antique goods for
tourists. If you want to find stuffs from the past, this is the right

market in certain occasion, as it is located in very strategic

Gedhe Market
Commonly known as “Pasar Gedhe” by local people, in
English literally translated into “Big Market”, it is indeed
the biggest market in Solo. The building was a

front of Solo city hall, this market mainly offers traditional
cuisines of Solo and other original stuffs of Solo. It has

The airport in Solo named Adi Soemarmo International Airport. There are several direct flights
from Jakarta few times a day by some local airline companies, takes about one hour. There is

Yogyakarta–Surabaya train line and most trains stop at Solo Balapan, the main train station.

BATAM
Shopping is the main factor for visitors who come to
Batam since it has distinguished characteristics with
another shopping place in Indonesia. The whole island
is a duty free zone, making the prices become relatively
low. The shopping scene may not be as good as in
Singapore or Hong Kong, because the two islands has
transformed into a mega metropolitan city. Batam
however, seems rather like the two islands back in the
old days, where everything was a lot unsophisticated.
Athough it is just an island city, it has numerous shopping center spreads all over the area with
their own characters and stuffs to sell, which will indulgently satisfy your shopping desire.
As the duty free zone, electronic items like cameras and cellular phones are very much cheap in
Batam. But you may find it difficult to pass the Customs at the Immigration if you carried out
bigger electronic appliances. Other mostly demanded items in Batam are clothing, perfumes,
leather goods and confectionaries. In Nagoya or at the ferry terminal you can shop for items like
cigarettes, alcoholic drinks, perfumes, chocolate as well as local handicrafts from all over the
Indonesian archipelago.
Modern Shopping Malls
Shopping malls available mostly in the larger part of
Batam, such as in Nagoya, Waterfront City and
Batam Centre. And the selection is quite many. The
Diamond City Mall, Lucky Plaza, Centre Point,
Batam Centre Mall, Robinson & Ramayana, and the
newly built Megamall (Hypermart) is some of the
places you could visit. There is also the Ralph
Lauren shop which comes with extremely low prices.
The items are all genuine, because it is an
authorized outlet of Ralph Lauren. You can bargain in many of those shopping places above, so
bargaining skill will be very useful although language will often be a challenge.
Arts and Crafts
You may also want to check out the galleries and local
decorating or souvenir shops. You may encounter some
fabulous arts and crafts at a bargain prices. Items like
paintings, wood carvings, pottery, etchings and intricately
fashioned jewellery from many part of Indonesia could be
found in these shops. The quality is nonetheless excellent.

Batam is also well known as the right place to find good
quality second hand goods, like vehicles, electronics,
kidstoys, kitchen utensils, furnitures, clothes, etc. There are
some places known as second hand goods market, such as
Sekenan Aviari, Pasar Rakyat, Plaza Sentosa Perdana,
Bengkong Seken, Tanjung Sengkuang, and Lucky Plaza.
There are many banks in Nagoya, and you can easily find a money exchange counter or a cash
machine which accept Visa or MasterCard. Singapore dollars are as welcome as Indonesian

Flights every Friday and Sunday, RM76 one-way from Johor Bahru before taxes.
Flights depart Batam at 1100 while on return flights, they depart Johor Bahru at 13.15.
By Ferry/Boat
Ferries connect Johor Baru with Batam Centre. There are virtually hourly departures
between 07.50 and 18.40 from Johor Baru to Batam, and between 07.50 and 17.20 from
Batam to Johor Baru.
Tickets cost RM60/95 one-way/return before taxes to/from Johor Baru.

