Prefabricated Sukkah for Congregation Beth Elohim
Prefabricated Sukkah
for Congregation Beth Elohim
A composition of solid and void, resulting from careful placement of plywood panels to
provide views at eye level for passersby of all heights and ages, this Sukkah creates
opportunity for light to penetrate its walls, creating interesting shadows within and on the
surrounding sidewalk. The design for this temporary structure uses a structure of plywood frames, clad
primarily with plywood paneling and natural material, in accordance with Jewish traditions pertaining to
Sukkah building. A portion of the interior wall is essentially a living green wall, clad in soil, plants, and moss.
The Sukkah is designed to be used essentially as an outdoor room by the full range of Congregation Beth
Elohim (CBE) members, including Yachad (religious school) students, families, and even small groups who
sign up to have dinner with the congregation’s new rabbi in the Sukkah, all for about one week only during
the observance of the Jewish holiday of Sukkhot.
Prefabricated in the Think Fabricate Greenpoint shop, and designed as a temporary structure to be
installed for one week during Sukkhot 2015, The Sukkah measures 7’ wide x 15’ long x 8’-6” high, and runs
parallel to the CBE sanctuary building, on Eighth Avenue at the corner of Garfield Place in Park Slope,
Brooklyn, NY.
