We discuss a variety of topics such as health & nutrition, school activities, volunteer opportunities, community events and much more. Look for fliers coming home with your child and for the reminder phone calls, we hope to see you soon! February 2013 No Toys, or Other Items from Home Please Spirit Day- Pajama Day! Students May Only Bring to School the Supplies They Need for Learning. Bringing personal property to school creates many unnecessary problems. Please remind your child NOT to bring toys, balls, cell phones, electronic games, etc. from home. Playground equipment is provided by the school. The school cannot be responsible for the replacement of personal items brought from home. It is best if students do not bring cell phones to school. Should there be some reason that a parent feels a child needs to have a cell phone with them at school; the cell phones need to be turned off and put away in backpacks during the day. If any staff member sees a student using a cell phone (even if it is not in use) during the school day they will take the phone away and put it in a safe place. The staff member will then make arrangements to return it to the parent. Erin Dilbeck our Preschool Teacher Organized a 5K Run/Walk Fundraiser for Sandy Hook Elementary School Over winter break, Erin Dilbeck our Preschool teacher here at Lansing decided to do something positive after the incident at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. It all started with an idea of a 5k Run/Walk and with a $25 donation per participant and all money raised would go towards the Sandy Hook Fund. The idea first made its way to Face book, shortly thereafter it was then picked up by Boulder Running Company. The event brought in over 200 people and raised over $6000 for the cause. A special thanks to all the teachers and staff who participated in the event Erin Dilbeck, Erin Pink, Stacy Davis, Keely Tallarico, Monica Kirkegaard, Karen Balutowski, Jan Dunn, Annie Kersten, Jodi Sonberg and Molly McMorrow. Art During the past semester students have shown their immense talents and dedication in art class. In that time we have done some great projects like; Dia de los Muertos Calaveras, Kandinski Circles, X-ray and Dot Paintings, Collage Owls, Hand Designs, Op Art Blobs, “Me” Portraits and Pattern Snakes to name a few. Students have put in a lot of effort into their work and it shows! Within the next couple of weeks, for the most part, students will be taking their projects home. I would like to hold on to some to put up around the school as well as for the district art show that is coming up. I encourage all of you to come and look at all the great work that is displayed throughout the school. Music News PE News Our K-2 students learned more music theory this month by adding another rhythm friend to our vocabulary: quarter note. We compared similarities and differences between whole note (4 beats), half note (2 beats) and now quarter note (1 beat). We practiced composing and creating new lyrics to songs by changing “Five Fat Turkeys” to “Five Fat Snowmen”. We strengthened our gross motor movement skills by dancing to “Rockin Around the Christmas Tree”. We also continued to sharpen our listening skills by playing jingle bells and rhythm sticks to A and B sections of “Sleigh Ride”. Lastly we watched/discussed a YouTube performance of a famous composer, John Williams, conducting the Boston Pops playing “Sleigh Ride”. The “whip” was everyone’s favorite part! We have been fortunate to have received some new equipment this year. Courtesy of a 5th Gear for Kids grant, we now have three portable tennis nets, with a set of thirty tennis racquets, and 3 dozen low compression tennis balls. In addition, we have also received a set of 30 gator skin balls of various sizes and colors that we will be able to use in PE as well. Information about the 5th Gear for Kids, a program for fifth grade students in Aurora, is available at http://5thgearkids.org/. 3rd graders are learning how to play the soprano recorder. We connected previous knowledge of Native American music, “The Canoe Song” to our new instrument; for example a recorder is a relative of the Native American flute. We saw/ discussed pictures of the flute family, learned how to play B and G on the recorder and what it looks like on the treble clef. Our next goal is to create an ensemble (group of musicians) to play a recurring rhythm on the drum, add xylophone e minor chords, and layer in recorders improvising on B or G. This is evolving into an instrumental piece we will add to our vocal “Canoe Song”, thus bringing children full circle into the composing/performing process. 4th and 5th graders were introduced to Colorado State Std. “Creation of Music” as well, via choreography. We learned to sing “Hot Chocolate” from the movie Polar Express. It’s got a strong, Latin feel, perfect for choreography. Next we learned how to segment the lyrics (break down into workable parts) to refine how to add movement, a bit at a time, sometimes in longer phrases, always checking for what makes sense. Then in small groups, we combined our movements as one group. We performed in class for each other and scored groups via a rubric, 3 being the best, 1 being most work needed. In evaluating ourselves and each other, we took on the role of audience ourselves and learned that visual patterns and formations truly make for a richer musical experience. February is Heart Month Take care of your heart and get some cardiovascular exercise. Jumping Rope is great cardiovascular exercise and the benefits are significant. By including physical activity into daily living children and adults can significantly reduce the onset and burden of heart Disease. Jumping rope, brisk walking, bike riding, and swimming are all aerobic exercises that are good for your heart!! Smoking is the most preventable cause of heart disease. Smoking increases the tendency of the blood to clot which can result in a stroke. Heart Facts: Did you know your heart weighs as much as a sneaker and is the size of your fist. Most heart attacks occur between the hours of 8 and 9 AM. Laughter increases your blood flow, which is good for your heart and may reduce stress. Target Grant for 3rd Grade Students Each year 3rd grade goes on a field trip and this year we decided to go venture out to the Downtown aquarium. To help fund the cost of the trip we applied for a Target Grant, which we received and this grant will fund both the bus fee and entry fee to the aquarium. The 3rd graders are excited for this opportunity and experience. During our trip to the aquarium we will be furthering our understandings around animals and their habitats. We are looking forward to our big trip in March! IN SCHOOL ON TIME EVERY DAY = SUCCESS! All children are expected to be in school on time every day, with the exception of a doctor appointment or other valid family emergency. Learning starts as soon as possible in the morning and late children miss their first class instruction. Frequent tardies cause children to delayed in that class. Parents, please help us work with your children to be in school on time every day. A frequent day tardy is unacceptable. If you would like to talk to me regarding this issue please come and see or call me. Mrs. Jan Dunn Health/Attendance Clerk 303-364-8297 Blood Drive In December Lansing’s staff participated in our second annual blood drive in honor of Ivan Martin. Sra. Jan Dunn Encargada de Asistencia/Salud 303-364-8297 Blood Drive In December Lansing’s staff participated in our second annual blood drive in honor of Ivan Martin. We were able to collect 19 donations which was a great success because one donation usually saves up to three lives. We want to thanks Children’s Hospital for coming to Lansing for the drive and we look forward to donating again next year. A Special Thank You! Rosa Huertas, Leticia Munoz and Alejandra Vazquez we appreciate all you do here at Lansing Hemos tenido suerte de haber recibido equipo nuevo este año.
