Dear friends,
Thank you for helping us launch our first Mother Earth News Fair
in Topeka, Kansas! Your enthusiasm is the reason for this event and we
appreciate your passion and your participation.
We are excited about bringing the Fair to our own backyard right here in
the Midwest. We’re especially eager to host an event in the capital city for
the first time.
Every day we hear from folks all over the world who have great ideas for
helping to solve the sustainability puzzle, and we always look forward to
getting together at the Fairs to share ideas in pursuit of this common goal.
I would like to extend my personal thanks to the many supportive organizations that have invested their time
and effort in support of this event, and the many innovative entrepreneurs who have chosen to participate. Major
sponsors this year include Agrilicious, Botanical Interests, Capital City Nissan, Coconut Bliss, Colorado Yurt,
Cromwell Solar, Enerhealth, Envirolet, Frontier Farm Credit, Mockingbird Meadows, Nature’s Flavors, Premier 1,
Purina, Split Second Log Splitter and Theo Chocolate.
We are particularly grateful to the extraordinary individuals who are joining us as speakers, including our headliners:
Dan and Don Adams, Ed Begley, Jr., Jessi Bloom, Dan Chiras, Rosemary Gladstar, David Gumpert, Gary Nabhan,
Joel Salatin, David Schafer, and Stephanie Tourles. They represent some of the most influential and visionary minds
and we are honored to share their commitment to sustainability and conscientious lifestyles.

enough renewable energy to power

storm for pollinators, triggering the
risk of food chain collapse. The solutions to this

Heretics Unite
Joel Salatin – Polyface Farms
Mother Earth News Fair visitors
are part of an integrity living
tsunami that threatens Wall Street
and governmental orthodoxy. That’s
a good thing. Modern American
orthodoxy assumes that the Dow
Jones Industrial Average is far more
important than dancing earthworms. That exports are
more valuable than functional aquifers. That food
convenience is far more important than food
knowledge. That health comes from drugs and personal
satisfaction comes from Hollywood entertainment.
Heretics question all of these axiomatic untruths. This
hard-hitting but humorous performance by farmer,
author and entertainer Joel Salatin identifies these
outrageous orthodoxies, explains the heresy antidote,
and calls for all of us to chart a different path for
integrity living.

Creating Life in Your Soil
Dale Strickler – Star Seed
We have historically thought of soil as merely an
inert medium into which we pour water and
fertilizer to make our crops grow, and we thought
that they grew better if we did our best to kill all
the nasty fungi and bacteria that were surely out to
kill our crops. What we are now coming to realize
is that a soil with a strong, healthy microbial
population will be much more drought tolerant,
more disease resistant, and much more fertile than
than the typical cropland or garden soil. This
workshop covers methods to promote a healthy
microbial population in our soil and the benefits
that can be derived from it.

RENEWABLE ENERGY STAGE
The No-Mortgage Natural Cottage
Chris McClellan – Natural Cottage Project
Before the Industrial Revolution our ancestors
generally lived in small houses they built for
themselves from local earth, stone, straw and
wood, mainly because the materials were cheap or
free and didn’t require a great deal of specialized
skill. Today’s houses might be bigger and more
comfortable, but they’re also often toxic and
expensive. For all sorts of good reasons, basic DIY
shelter is making a comeback. With a little
guidance, almost anyone can still build their own
home with low-cost natural and scrounged
materials for under $10,000 and opt out of the
industrial building and mortgage rat race.

The Carbon Ranch
Courtney White
The idea of the carbon ranch involves the potential
for removal of carbon dioxide from the
atmosphere through plant photosynthesis and
related land-based carbon sequestration activities
that are both large and largely overlooked.
Strategies and co-benefits include: enriching soil
carbon, no-till farming with perennials, employing
climate-friendly livestock practices, conserving
natural habitat, restoring degraded watersheds and
rangelands, increasing biodiversity, lowering
agricultural emissions, and producing local food.
These strategies have been demonstrated
individually to be both practical and profitable.

Seven Steps to a Green, Healthy and
Efficient Home
Doug Garrett – Building Performance &
Comfort, Inc.
Green building and building science are a matched
set. One teaches us about materials and the other
teaches us exactly how to build with them for the
best outcome. Green building tells us how to
select the right materials to build, encourages us to
reduce our waste during construction, and sets
standards for energy efficiency. Building science
teaches us how to use applied physics to correctly
combine those healthy, sustainable materials with
the best equipment and appliances to create a
holistic, integrated house system that is right for
the climate in which it is built, incredibly healthy,
truly comfortable and maximizes our return on
your home building/remodeling investment.
