Vegetarian Festival 2014
One of the most popular events
on the Pattaya calendar began
on the afternoon of Tuesday,
23rd September. It is none other
than the Vegetarian Festival
which is a 10 day vegetarian
feast held at the Sawang
Boriboon Foundation in Naklua.
After the big parade, with lion
and dragon dancing, the
highlight was the cooking of the
vegetarian food in a giant steel
skillet by VIPs and invited
guests. For anyone that is a
permanent vegetarian this
festival is ‘a must’ as ideas for
meat substitution were in
abundance. However, this
annual festival is in essence
about the cleansing and
purification of the body, and is
traditionally linked to the
Chinese-Thai communities not
only in Pattaya but around the
whole country at this time of
year. Most of the stallholders
were more than happy to explain
what ingredients went into their
‘creations’ and were very precise
about how it should be eaten and
what with. The festival will go on
until Friday, 3rd October.

Open Sesame! Well, you
certainly don’t need to use
those magical words from the
famous Arabian Nights tale
about Ali Baba and the 40
Thieves to enter and enjoy a
welcome at Ali Baba Tandoori
and Curry Restaurant in South
Pattaya. This culinary treasure
house certainly woos the senses
with gastronomic delights from
one of the longest running
Indian restaurants in Pattaya
(nearly 30 years). True to the
celebrated tale, Ali Baba is
elaborately
decorated
throughout with set piece

with its cluster of alcoves and
mysterious side rooms. Even
the waiters under the helm of

Over the years Ali Baba has
maintained an exceptionally

Fatal Blow
Taken
Man Kidnapped by Wife
Dongtan police were called out
in the early hours of Saturday,
20th September to Soi 17 off
Thepprasit Road in South
Pattaya. They went to the 73
Mansion building where they
were told by residents that the
owner had been kidnapped,
when a group of men and
women came along, tied him up
and bundled him into the back
of a pickup truck then rushed
away at speed. The victim was
53 year old Mr. Tanasak, and
his 22 year old son told police
what had occurred earlier. The
gang forced themselves into the
office and began beating
Tanasak with sticks before
kidnapping him.
More
information came out that one
of the attackers was Tanasak’s
estranged wife who was having
a conflict with him over money.
UPDATE: Pattaya police
Superintendent Police Colonel
Supatee Bunkrong announced
on Sunday, 21st September, the
rescue of Tanasak, and the
arrest of two women involved
in his kidnapping. As believed,
one of the suspects was his
estranged wife Mrs. Bunnam
Yodtoglang, aged 40, from
Bangkok. The other woman is
her younger sister, Miss
Hataipan, aged 37. They were
both arrested at a house in
Buriram province.
As
suspected,
the
women
revealed that it was about the
family business. Apparently,
Tanasak had opened another
apartment block in Sriracha,
and
his
wife
ran
it
unsuccessfully and the income
decreased. Therefore, he gave
her job to his nephew, causing
friction between Tanasak and
Mrs. Bunnam. So, with advice
from her young boyfriend, they
planned revenge by kidnapping
Tanasak and taking him to
Buriram. They were arrested
after one of their friends who
did not want to get involved in

Man’s Body Found in Canal
Banglamung police were notified
on the afternoon of Monday,
22nd September that the body
of a Thai man had been found
floating in the Naklua canal.
Officers
removed
the
unidentified body aged about
40, to discover that he had
been hit on the head by a heavy
object. Nearby, police began
an investigation after traces of
blood were found at a
squatters’ camp, believing this
was the scene of the murder.
After questioning the residents,
important information was
given to them that the killer was
41 year old Mr. Porn Sonsamlee
who got into an argument with
the victim after a bout of heavy
drinking, and hit him over the
head with a bar. They also
claimed that they did not know
the identity of the victim who
had only joined the camp a few
days back.
Police revealed
they arrested Porn who had a
criminal record for murder and
drug crimes, and had a mental
disorder after being released
from a mental hospital. He now
awaits a day in court.
Garbage Spill
Nasty Smell on Beach Road
In the early hours of Sunday,
21st September, Pattaya police
were called out to Beach Road
to investigate a crash, involving
a car and a City Hall Garbage
Truck. At the scene in front of
the Tropicana Hotel officers saw
the car had smashed into the
rear of the truck leaving foul
smelling garbage all over the
road, and the Sawang Boriboon
Rescue Volunteers were
attending to the car driver who
was seriously injured after the
impact. Mr. Srawut, aged 35,
was given first aid and then
rushed to the emergency room
at Banglamung Hospital. The 2
garbage
workers
were
unharmed and stated that they
saw the car coming at them at
high speed so they managed to
jump out of the way just before
the collision. An investigation
has now been set up and police
believe that the car driver might
have fallen asleep at the wheel.
The case continues.

All That Jazz
St.
Andrews
Music
Students Workshop
The IGCSE Music students at
St. Andrews International
School had the unique
opportunity to attend a
composition workshop recently,
focusing on their current Music
compositions for their IGCSE
course. The main objective was
for students from both
campuses - St. Andrews
Sukhumvit 107 and Green Valley
- to create their own
inspirational compositions
within a certain time limit,
focusing on the areas of studies
covered in class such as:
Minimalism, 12 Bar Blues - Jazz/
Fusion and African Drumming.
Students from both schools
worked collaboratively and
benefitted greatly from various
workshops offered by Mr. M
Muller and Ms. Sian Jones the
music teachers from both
schools. Mr. Muller, Head of
Music at St. Andrews Green
Valley explained “The biggest
challenge was for the students
to make independent decisions
through project managing
various tasks in preparation for
an informal concert at the end
of the day, during which their
new skills were showcased.
These skills are extremely
valuable and reinforce the
qualities of the IB Learner
Profile.”
All the students enjoyed this
day of musical creativity
immensely and both campuses
look forward to more musical

The Lawyer A successful
lawyer parked his brand new
Porsche in front of his office,
ready to show it off to his
colleagues. As he was getting
out, a truck came down the road
and completely tore off the
driver’s door. Fortunately, a
policeman was close enough
to see the accident and pulled
Weekly Reisman
up behind the doorless
Porsche. The lawyer started
screaming hysterically about
how his precious Porsche was
completely ruined. After the
lawyer finally wound down from
his rant, the officer shook his
head in disbelief, “I can’t believe
how materialistic you lawyers
are,” he said, “You are
so focused on your possessions
that you neglect the most
important things in life.” “How
can you say such a thing?”
asked the lawyer. The officer
replied, “Don’t you even
realize that your left arm is
missing? It was severed when
the truck hit you!” “Oh, my

WATCH MOVIE ONLY 120 BAHT EVERY WEDNES-
might need to spend more money than you expected this week. Be alert to impulse
spending – rather wait to give time for urgency to pass.
THIS WEEK FOR ARIES:(Born between 21st March & 20th April) Enthusiasm for what
you believe has future possibilities will be at an all time high this week. Give and take
between you and others will seem easier, if not expected by them, until late October.
What they really think can become difficult to ascertain as they can become more
secretive. Be cautious about taking on obligations now.
THIS WEEK FOR TAURUS:(Born between 21st April & 20th May) Greater focus on
your health, fitness, diet and exercise could be wise from this week until 24th October,
especially if there has been a lot of social activity of late that has seen you overindulging.
Someone could express their opinion harshly, making you realise there may be aspects
to them that are very different to what you presumed.
THIS WEEK FOR GEMINI: (Born between 21st May & 20th June) More opportunity for
leisure, pleasure or social activity can begin to present itself from this week and for
the next month. You could also meet some interesting people but maintain caution
when it comes to instant attraction or swiftly made promises. You need to apply a
strict analytical process to details of some sort.
THIS WEEK FOR CANCER: (Born between 21st June & 22nd July) You will begin to feel
this week that you can apply a balanced approach to whatever you have considered
during September that needs a better structure established. Someone else will likely
want some sort of control but perhaps it is time they learned that you would not
necessarily bend to their wishes entirely. Stay strong.
THIS WEEK FOR LEO: (Born between 23rd July & 22nd August) You need to start
thinking about taking a more balanced approached to distractions that come your
way. You have likely been lazy on this score during September. In your mind you need
to take a yes or no approach and allow no grey shades to enter into what needs to be
established. This can save you a lot of time in the long run.
THIS WEEK FOR VIRGO: (Born between 23rd August & 22nd September) You should
start to feel happier about being able to sort things out in your mind in a practical way.
You can feel more decisive though there will be more than one stage to matters. You
THIS WEEK FOR LIBRA: (Born between 23rd September & 22nd October) Venus, your
ruling planet moves into your sign this week where it will remain until 24th October. This
should make you happy as well as give a sense of getting back to your old self if this has
not seemed to be the case of late. At the same time you will be dealing with pressure.
Battle it out with discussions to gain a fair outcome.
THIS WEEK FOR SCORPIO: (Born between 23rd October & 21st November) Mercury,
the planet of communication has moved into your sign, where it will remain for its first
stay until the 11th October. This will encourage some serious thinking about your personal
position or anything that involves you, as well as commitments attached. Not everything
is out in the open, so have patience.
THIS WEEK FOR SAGITTARIUS: (Born between 22nd November & 21st December)
Expect the unexpected this week and while you might have to quickly take advantage
of opportunity as it arises, you also need to be very cautious about being reckless.
Someone else will not be as open as you and it will be difficult to know exactly where
they stand. It is important you do not give up independence for them.
THIS WEEK FOR CAPRICORN: (Born between 22nd December & 19th January)
Consider the things you have learnt that have led to changing you as a person,
particularly when it comes to a strengthening of character. Obligations will be involved
somehow. This might include greater awareness of what you shouldn’t take on. You can
fine tune and balance this out over the next month. Go to it.
THIS WEEK FOR AQUARIUS: (Born between 20th January & 18th February) You need
to start focussing your mind on commitments this week in a serious way. There will be
more than one stage before you will get it settled. When you get an idea, you need to
find some quiet time to yourself to analyse where it could go in the long term or how you
could be affected long term. Others have greater freedom
THIS WEEK FOR PISCES: (Born between 19th February & 20th March) If you feel
someone is drifting away, it is because they have found you vague or changeable. Not
that they will be direct about it. This week you need to start to focus in a straightforward
manner on what you are realistically prepared to commit yourself to in the long term.
You could need some help later, to fill in the details.

Foreign Stock Exchange
Khun Somsak Chopaka
Siam Firm Inter Laws was
established by Khun Somsak
Chopaka an Attorney at Law
with 30 years of working
experience in domestic and
international law, for individuals
both foreign and local, domestic
entities and in-house legal
counsel
for
numerous
established
international
companies. Khun Somsak will be
giving legal advice about the
ever changing situation in
regards to Thai Law and
keeping readers up to date with
the constant changing business
and social environment here in
Thailand.
I have seen many cases of
foreigners coming to live here
and either not understanding
or caring about the legal right
to sell foreign shares here in
the Kingdom of Thailand, even
though they may own or
operate a company abroad that
is involved in this business.
Whenever they sell shares from
a foreign stock exchange here
in Thailand, upon receiving any
payment they will be charged
by a Thai court of law, as it is
against the Stock Exchange
Act. While this is the case for
illegally setting up companies or
individual parties there are legal
ways to be a part of this
business, they require you to
set up a public company with a
capital of one hundred million
baht, that runs an actual
business here in Thailand which
is then used to apply for a
permit to sell stock locally. It is
possible, though quite difficult
to gain this permit.
A lot of foreigners will choose
not to go this way as it requires
a lot of investment in time and
resources and decide to cheat
their clients by falsely claiming
that they indeed have the
aforementioned permit. They
will then ask the client to
transfer the money to a staff
account here in Thailand as per
the norm in this kind of
transaction. Most companies
that operate using the stock
market follow up the profit and
loss of shares, paying when the
shares are up whilst keeping the
invested money in the company
and also deducting the loss
when the stock market is down.
LEGAL
But there are companies which
never return a single baht back
to the investor and we call
these companies “call center
boiler rooms”.
In the past when someone is
caught operating this kind of
business they will be arrested
and charged by a prosecutor
over visa charges or operating
a business without a work
permit. When they are in court
they will only be punished by a
lax fine of only two thousand
five hundred baht for each
charge followed by being
deported out from the country.
The boss, meaning the owner
of the company, will have to pay
an increased fine of eight
thousand baht and will also be
deported. But now this has
changed; right now the penalty
for such a crime is the
aforementioned fines along
with a one year jail sentence
after which the individual will be
deported back to their home
country.
I have seen many cases of
boiler room businesses and it is
an easy way of cheating many
people from abroad especially
from Australia, America and the
United Kingdom. Nowadays
these companies will use a Thai
bank to receive money from
clients buying shares when
before they would only use a
foreign bank, the local bank
account will also usually be
under the name of a Thai
spouse or colleague of the

company owner. When a client
becomes suspicious they will
usually follow the account and
if taking the issue up with the
company owner amounts to
nothing then they will involve
the local police. If the police see
that the account in question has
an abnormal amount of
transactions
and/or
an
abnormal amount of money in
it then they will place the owner
on the suspicion of money
laundering, requiring them to
prove their innocence.
If their innocence cannot be
proven then the account in
question will be frozen by the
police, they have to prove that
the money was made in the
correct way, declare what
businesses it came from and
how the money came to be in
their account to prevent this
from happening, which is not
easy. Even so, there are still
many foreigners coming to
Thailand for sightseeing or a
short term stay that will come
to work for an illegitimate
business such as making
enough money to spend on that
length of time. Not knowing
that they are causing a lot of
trouble for other people and
that if they are arrested they
will receive severe punishment
for the crimes committed. I
have seen many serious cases
like this in the Thai court
system.

similar to what I have mentioned
above, please do not become
involved in any way. It is not
good for yourself or for the
people who are cheated out of
their life savings, some are old
or handicapped and its social
effects are staggering. If you
plan on making an investment
in the stock market make sure
you do so through a legal
broker agent, even if you have
to pay a brokers fee you will be
safe in the knowledge that
whenever you want to buy or
sell at a profit or loss you can
be sure that you are not being
cheated and that whoever you
are doing business with has the
proper license and permits.

Een schapen
farm in Pattaya
Als je net geschoren bent, valt
het misschien nog wel mee.
Anders
moet
Thailand
verschrikkelijk warm zijn. Ik
bedoel natuurlijk: als je als
schaap geboren bent. Pattaya
is sinds kort een schapenfarm
rijk. Voor ons Nederlanders niet
zo bijzonder, maar voor Aziaten
een ware attractie. En voor
kinderen uiteraard. En daar lijkt
de uitspanning eigenlijk het
meest op, een kinderboerderij.
Je mag overal in om de beesten
te aaien of voedsel te geven.
Het is aandoenlijk hoe
schaapachtig je soms wordt
aangekeken. Dat bedoel ik niet
beledigend. Tenslotte heb ik ook
vrienden die me soms menselijk
aankijken. Naast schapen zijn
er ook ezels, minipaarden,
herten
en
ganzen
te
bewonderen. Er zijn allerlei
koffieshops, viswinkeltjes en
souvenirshops. En een mislukte
molen. Van 10.00 uur tot 22.00
uur is een groot restaurant, het
Barn Steakhouse, open.
Tenslotte vielen nog twee
decoraties op. Enerzijds een
tuinmeubel waar Rietveld
jaloers op had kunnen zijn en
anderzijds
een
humoristischbedoelde strobaal,
die
bewijst
dat
de
missionarissenhouding niet is
toegepast.
De schapenfarm is als volgt te
vinden. Volg vanaf het zuiden
van Pattaya de Sukhumvit
Road en ga bij Central Pattaya
Road de fly-over op richting
Bangkok. Afslag Bang Lamung
naar links. Dan zie je links een
klein bord met schapenfarm en
op het zelfde moment aan de
rechterkant een groot bord met
dezelfde mededeling. De
schapenfarm ligt dan ook aan
de rechterzijde. Bij de eerste
U-turn draaien en daarna kan
het, gezien de bewegwijzering,
niet meer mis gaan. Door DK.
De Silverlake
Wijngaard
Toen ik eerder dit jaar het
concert van de Dutch Swing
College Band bezocht, werd ik
getroffen
door
de
uitgestrektheid
van
de
wijngaard waar een en ander
plaatsvond. Reden om even te
gaan kijken. Rijd via Sukkhumvit
richting Sattahip. Na de afslag
naar het meditatiecentrum
Yannasanwararam volgt de
afslag naar de Boeddha op de
berg, in het ThaisKhao
CheeChang geheten. Deze
afslag gaat ook naar Silverlake
Vineyard.Van de website weet
PATTAYA PEOPLE WEEKLY ISSUE 465 | SATURDAY 27TH SEPTEMBER TO SATURDAY 4TH OCTOBER 2014
ik dat er verschillende
onderdelen zijn: een resort,
een
restaurant,
een
amfitheater en natuurlijk de
wijngaard. De eerste twee
liggen links van de weg, de
laatste twee rechts. We kijken
eerst rechts en zien al gauw dat
er een mogelijkheid is een
rondrit in een soort treintje te
maken voor 70 Baht per
persoon. Het terrein is speels
aangelegd
met
veel
waterpartijen
en
veel
bloemperken,
waaronder
zonnebloemen, die ik eerder in
de wijngaard van Khao Yai
bewonderde. We zijn een
maand te vroeg, want de
druiven zijn nog niet rijp. In
iedere geval een mooi gebied
om te fotograferen.
Ons treintje stopt op ons
verzoek ook even bij het
amfitheater. Op de foto is te
zien dat dit terrein pal naast de
grote Boeddha ligt. Wie van
muziek houdt, kan ik vertellen
dat hier regelmatig concerten
worden gegeven. Aan de
overkant van de weg ligt het
begin van het Resort, kennelijk
nog niet klaar. Het restaurant
is wel gereed. Een gigantische
ruimte binnen, maar ook veel
en leuke plaatsen buiten.
Omdat ik al twintig jaar in
Thailand woon, is een wijngaard
voor mij meer bijzonder dan
welk beeld van Boeddha dan
ook.
Voor
kortstondige
bezoekers van Thailand is het
misschien beter het tochtje te
verkopen als het bezichtigen
van
het
grootste
Boeddhabeeld, zeer zeker de
moeite waard, in Thailand met
als extraatje een bezoek aan
de wijngaard. Met overigens
volop mogelijkheden te proeven
en te kopen. DK
KhaoPhraVihan
We naderen de bergruggen, die
de grens tussen Thailand en
Cambodja vormen. Boven op
zo’n berg ligt de oude Khmer
tempel, of althans de
overblijfselen ervan. De lucht
is asgrauw en in de bergen
regent het waarschijnlijk, maar
misschien hebben we geluk. Ik
ben hier twee keer eerder
geweest en merk nu dat er wel
wat veranderd is. Een groot
gebied langs de grens heet nu
Nationaal park. Ik moet 200
Baht toegang betalen, voor een
Thai is het 20 Baht. Voor de
chauffeur is het gratis. De weg
is totaal nieuw en eindigt waar
vroeger een grote markt was.
Nu
zijn
er
wat
souvenirwinkeltjes, een paar
restaurantjes en een groot wit
bezoekerscentrum.
We
beginnen te lopen. Na
ongeveer een kilometer staat
een houten huisje met een
militair ervoor. We worden naar
het loket verwezen. De
Cambodjaanse douane. Hij
vraagt geen geld, maar wil
alleen een fotokopie van mijn
paspoort maken. Per persoon
wordt ons nu 5 Baht gevraagd
en daar krijgen we een soort
visitekaartje voor. De zin ervan
ontgaat me, maar het is niet
echt duur. We lopen verder tot
de weg overgaat in een
rotsplateau. De lucht ziet
zwart, maar het is droog. We
worden belaagd door kinderen
die allemaal willen weten waar
ik vandaan kom. De meeste
hebben een paraplu bij zich en
bieden hun diensten aan. Ik wijs
iedereen en alles af. E é n
jongetje met een leuk petje
zegt niets, maar loopt gewoon
mee. Ik herken vlak voor een
trap over een riviertje het
huisje, waar je vroeger je
paspoort moest afgeven. Aan
de andere kant van de rivier
zijn weer souvenirwinkels, maar
eerst moeten we betalen om de
berg op te mogen. 200 Baht
voor mij, 30 Baht voor de Thais
in ons gezelschap. Steeds
bieden gidsen zich aan, maar ik
zeg dat ik ze niet nodig heb.
We staan aan de voet van de
eerste stenen trap. De treden
variëren in hoogte van 20
centimeter tot een halve meter.
Het jongetje, dat nog steeds
meeloopt, zegt dat deze trap
naar het eerste niveau leidt. Ik
schat dat deze trap ongeveer
300 treden heeft en moedig
begin ik de klim. Op ongeveer
een kwart moet ik stoppen. Ik
kan niet meer. Zwaar hijgend
ga ik zitten. Ik neem een foto
naar beneden en é n omhoog.
Zo kan ik later uitleggen hoe
zwaar het parcours is. Het
duurt tien minuten voor ik weer
verder kan. Ik heb nog vijf
etappes nodig voor ik het
eerste niveau bereik. Mijn
knieë n trillen, maar na tien
minuten loop ik weer verder
over een weg die langzaam
omhoog gaat. Aan het eind
weer trappen. Minder hoog als
de eerste, maar de stenen
liggen zeer onregelmatig. Het
jongetje ziet mijn probleem en
zegt dat we de trap kunnen
vermijden door een omlopende
route te nemen. Weliswaar
moeten we evenveel omhoog,
maar het gaat gemakkelijker.
Links ligt een oude baadplaats,
heel goed bewaard gebleven.
We zijn op het tweede niveau.
Hier staan resten van
tempelgebouwen.
Niet
mooi,
maar
wel
indrukwekkend. Jammer dat
het zulk grauw weer is, want
alle foto’s zullen somber zijn.
We moeten weer verder naar
het derde niveau. Slechts é n
trap met geweldig hoge treden.
Hier staan de contouren van
wat eens een enorme tempel
geweest moet zijn. Tot slot
komen we op het hoogste
niveau. Ik heb het gehaald en
ga zitten om weer enigszins op
adem te komen. Op de hoogste
niveau staat weer een tempel,
maar het mooiste is het
uitkijkpunt aan het eind van de
rots. Steil naar beneden en
daarom voor Cambodjanen
ontoegankelijk kijken we uit
over Cambodja. Wat de diepere
bedoeling is om een berg die
alleen toegankelijk is voor
Thais,
Cambodjaans
te
noemen, ontgaat mij.
Terwijl we van het uitzicht
genieten vallen de eerste
druppels en angstig vraag ik me
af, hoe ik in vredesnaam die
trappen af moet, wanneer ze
kletsnat en glad van de regen
zijn. Gelukkig kan ik me
concentreren op é n leidende
gedachte: we moeten terug,
het kan niet anders. Met mijn
verstand op nul beginnen we
de afdaling. Ik ben kleddernat,
de stenen zijn kleddernat, alles
is kleddernat. Voorzichtig neem
ik stap voor stap, soms letterlijk
op handen en voet. Men wil me
voortdurend helpen, maar ik
heb meer vertrouwen in mijn
eigen voorzichtigheid dan in de
hulp van anderen. We komen
een
gezelschap
tegen,
waartussen zich een oud
vrouwtje bevindt. Ze zijn net
boven geweest en het is me
een raadsel dat ze hiertoe in
staat was. Ik vraag naar haar
leeftijd. Ze is zeventig en dat is
hier erg oud. De laatste (op de
heenweg de eerste) lange trap
is een crime, omdat je steeds
die afstand voor je ziet, maar
uiteindelijk sta ik trots beneden
te hijgen. Ik ben erop geweest
en ik ben weer afgedaald.
Ondanks vijf bypasses en een
gecompliceerde beenbreuk.
Leuk
door
lelijkheid
Een aantal maanden geleden
zocht ik naar een Chinese
tempel, die ik jaren al bezocht.
In mijn geheugen moest hij
ergens aan de kust van Sri
Racha liggen. We vonden hem
niet. Zoiets blijft aan je knagen
tot ik op Thailandblog een
artikeltje over Bansaeng las. Dit
artikel leidde naar een website
met alle bezienswaardigheden
van Bansaeng. Het tweede item
was
de
Wihan
Thep
SathitPhraKiitiChaloem. Een
mondvol, maar het was duidelijk
dat dit de Chinese tempel was
die ik zocht. Niet in Sri Racha
dus, maar in Bansaeng of
nauwkeuriger in AngSila.
We rijden dus Sukhumvit af
naar het noorden en slaan
linksaf bij AngSila. Dit is een
lange weg die vooral bekend is
door de talrijke winkels met
stenen
beelden
en
gebruiksvoorwerpen. Wie niet
van toeristische uitstapjes
houdt, kan het zakelijk houden.
Hier moet je zijn om een stenen
keukenvijzel te kopen. Aan het
eind van de weg kom je via
enkele bochten bij zee.
Rechtsaf is de oude markt.
Recht vooruit de vismarkt.
Daartussenin een buitenverblijf
van Rama IV. Een rode villa, die
helaas
wegens
werkzaamheden vandaag
gesloten is. Omdat er niemand
werkt, lijkt me dit een blijvende
toestand. In ieder geval een
mooie tuin en een prachtig
uitzicht naar zee.
We vervolgen onze weg langs
zee naar het Zuiden en komen
al snel bij de Chinese tempel.
Zo’n tien jaar geleden was er
é n gebouw, nu zijn er velen.
Allemaal even kleurrijk. Het
grote verschil tussen Chinese
tempels hier en de gewone
Thaise zit hem niet in de
overdaad aan kleuren, maar in
de vorm. Thaise tempels
hebben allemaal een ranke
sierlijke vorm, terwijl de
Chinese tempels er vierkant en
lomp uitzien. Er is uiteraard ook
een groot verschil in de
afbeelding van Boeddha. Het
is ongelooflijk dat deze
historische figuur door het ene
land als een slanke elegante
jongeman wordt gezien en door
het andere land als een
uitgezakte dikbuikige oudere
man. Weliswaar komt deze
transformatie soms ook bij
gewone mensen voor, maar ik
geloof niet dat beide landen
voor een verschillende leeftijd
hebben gekozen. Daarnaast
moeten we ons in het ene land
bescheiden opstellen ten
opzichte van Boeddha, hij moet
altijd boven ons uit torenen, in
het andere land kan hij gewoon
in een hoek op de grond staan
of vaker zitten. Binnen de
tempel treffen we veel beelden
van monniken (?), die allemaal
vrolijk opgeschilderd zijn. Het
doet heel kinderlijk aan. Het
geheel is zo lelijk dat het
daardoor interessant is om te
zien.
We verlaten de tempel en rijden
door naar het Zuiden naar
Bansaeng. Daar is een park,
waar ik ook lang geleden
geweest ben. Het heet Wang
SaenSuk. Aan de hand van
primitieve beeldhouwwerken
worden
morele
lessen
uitgedeeld. We zien welke
straffen na de dood worden
uitgedeeld voor de diverse
zonden die je tijdens het leven
begaan hebt. Door heel
Thailand vind je dit soort
parken. Ik ben ze althans al
verschillende
keren
tegengekomen, bijvoorbeeld in
de stad Pajao of in NongKai.
Allemaal even lelijk als gruwelijk.
In Bansaeng of AngSila is nog
veel meer te zien. Ik noem maar
de Wat AngSila, een tempel uit
de Ayutthia tijd. Of de Sam Muk
berg met een schrijn van Chao
Mae Khao Sam Muk, op de berg
een panoramisch uitzicht.
Mangrove bossen met een
kolonie vleermuizen. Een
oesterfarm, de mededeling dat
er een wandelbrug is van tien
kilometer lang deed me
besluiten niet te gaan kijken.
Langs zee tussen AngSila en
Bansaeng
talloze
visrestaurantjes
en
viswinkeltjes. En natuurlijk het
Instituut voor Maritieme
wetenschappen in Ban Saeng,
veel aquaria met veel
zeedieren. Kortom het is
alleszins de moeite waar om een
dag door te brengen in deze
plaatsjes, dertig kilometer
boven Pattaya.
Wetenswaardig
heden:
Zondag 7 september werd
mr.Sopon
Petragoon
gecremeerd in de Chaimongkot
tempel aan de Pattaya Thai.Hij
was in 1985 – 1993
burgemeester van Pattaya.
Hij
heeft
zich
zeer
verdienstelijk gemaakt voor de
stad en was betrokken bij het
Oprichten van het beroemde
Alcazar cabaret theater.

of the Mirage, 32 year old Mr.

Civic driver, Miss Wichuda. As
she slowed down to turn left,
the Mirage slammed into the

Bikes For Tykes
Pattaya
Sports
Club
Charity Update
B ikes for Tykes is now a
permanent fixture during the
month of February for Rick
Bevington, at school Nos. 7&.
4 and has been for the past 9
years.
It was 2004 that Rick started
this scheme donating just 4
bicycles to deserving children.
Pattaya Sports Club came on
board a year or two later. The
numbers have now increased
and 30 bicycles will be
presented to students at school
number 7 and school number 4
this year. With the teachers
help, a number of students are
selected to receive a bicycle
based on the child coming from
a poor family, is unable to afford
a motorcycle or any other form
of transport and may,
therefore,
have
many
kilometres to walk to and from
school every day. The other
requirement is that the cycles
are awarded for achievements
in their school work, again
decided by the teachers.
Before they are presented, Rick
dismantles them to make sure
that everything is in working
order and is safe to ride. In
addition, they receive a helmet
and padlock and are urged to
be very careful and observe the
rules of the road.
Rick is searching the stores in
the City for the right models
and the right price well before
Christmas and Pattaya Sports
Club are delighted to be a
partner in this venture. PSC’s
contribution does not cover the
entire cost of these machines
for Rick’s contribution,
monetarily and physically, is
astonishing.
But everyone in Pattaya can
help to enlarge this scheme.
Many families will have
purchased cycles for their
children over the years which
they have now grown out of,
are now broken or rusty and
are lying around using up
valuable space around the
house. But what do you do
with them? Simple, let Rick have
them! Here is an example of
what can be achieved. Rick can
use the parts from one bicycle
to repair another, a little paint
and we now have a machine
that can be used for the benefit
of another student. Don’t be
concerned about how to get
them to Rick for he will pick them
up in his truck.
Ring Rick on 086 072 4109 or
call William on 086 152 2754.
Well done Rick!

Winner Peter Habgood with KPK Award.
BUNKER BOYS @ The Ranch
Monday
15th
Sept:
Pleasant
Valley
(Stableford). We played from
the blue tees and several of the
par 4’s play very long when
there’s almost no run on the
fairways, but generally the
scores were good, with Colin
Greig (7) taking first place on 36
points, one point ahead of Geoff
Parker (15) and Dave Ashman
(15) who had to be separated
on a count back for second
place. The general consensus
after the round was that the
course is in good condition and
offers better value for money
than several other local venues
at the moment, and was well
worth the visit. Near Pins: Colin
Greig, Dave Ashman, Geoff
Parker, and Steve Durey. Wed
17th Sept:
Burapha
Stableford. We normally play
the A and B courses here off
the blue tees (6,733 yards), but
today we decided to play off the
shorter white tees (6,218
yards), in deference to
passionate requests made by
some of the higher handicap
golfers. Peter Habgood (19)
came romping home six points
clear of the field with 38 points,
securing his first win in four
months (maybe that was why
he wanted to play off the
shorter tees). Ken Young (26)
and Geoff Parker (15) had to be
separated on a count back for
second place with 32 points, with
Geoff this time being the unlucky
golfer to miss out. Near Pins:
Colin Greig, John Graham, Ken
Young and Peter Habgood.
Friday
19th
Sept:
Plutaluang
Stableford.
Sponsored by KPK Foods.
The lack of familiarity with the
course or the grainy greens
might account for the
disappointing scores on the day,
which ended with Colin Greig (7)
and Geoff Cox (14) being tied
on 33 points, with Colin being
awarded first place on the count
back. Dave Ashman (15) took
third place with 31 points and
no other golfer broke the 30
point barrier, so maybe we’d
better start playing these two
nines more often. Resident
Scotsman and pro-unionist,
Colin Greig, was presented with
the KPK Foods voucher back at
The Ranch and generously
bought a round of beers to
celebrate the results of the
Scottish referendum. Near
pins: Colin Greig, Geoff Cox and
John Graham.
Phil Smedley’s hole in one at Green Valley.
THE GOLF CLUB
Monday 15 th Sept: Green
Valley Stableford. Last week
Jack Grindvold (3) took 2nd on
the podium and this week did
just the same, albeit shooting
one point better this time out.
C’mon man, you gotta be tired
of being the bridesmaid, right?
Better luck next time Jacko! Kiwi
Terry Dyer (16) was up there
again as well to tie with Jack on
36 points, but it was Owen
Walkley (13) shutting all the
lads out with a 5 stoke win for
41 big points on the day. This
was our only golf event this
week. Steve Ellison.
Growling Swans at Mountain Shadow.
Winner at Khao Kheow was Oddur Olafsson.
CAFE KRONBORG
22nd Sept: Khao Kheow B &
C Stableford. The game
today was Khao Kheow up
route 7 in 44 minutes but over
an hour on the return trip. The
course was deserted when we
arrived so we were off B1 35
minutes early under overcast
skies and steamy hot conditions
with a short shower on B4 and
5. The course was in fine dry
condition with fast greens. Back
in the clubhouse after a round
of 3 hours and 40 minutes it was
determined
that
Oddur
Olafsson (13) was the winner
by a mile with 41 points, Dave
Richardson (27) second with a
measly 30 points and Jan
Lovgreen (16) third on a count
back from Mike Winfield, both
with 29 points.
THE GROWLING SWAN
Monday,
22nd
Sept:
Mountain
Shadow
Stableford. After a few
minutes on the Practice Putting
Green we headed off to the first
tee and decided to use the Blue
Tees which meant a test for
some of us. We had 2 three balls
at the head of the field and the
first one hit off 20 minutes
ahead of schedule at 9.40 am in
excellent weather conditions
although somewhat hot and
steamy. The golf course was in
great shape and the greens
were very well prepared as
usual and with no-one ahead of
us we maintained a very good
pace, reaching the half way
mark in one hour & fifty minutes.
It had been a very enjoyable
round with excellent company
although very hot and it was
great to get into the showers
afterwards. We had 2 Divisions
– Division A for handicaps 0 to
14 & Division B for golfers on
handicaps of 15 and over with
three places in each Division.
There were also rewards for
nearest the pin the par threes
and longest first putts on the
9th & 18th greens. There were
a couple of very good scores
but many very ordinary ones so
I guess the golf course was the
winner on the day but it was no
trouble for Chris Stewart (4)
who won the A Division with a
fine 39 points with good old
Ebrahim (12) in second place
with 34 points and your writer,
Peter Blackburn (13) in third
spot after scoring 33 points. Ron
Grafton (15) was the winner in
B Division with 37 points, 4 points
ahead of John Anderson (32) in
second place with 33 points and
Steve Jones (22) took out third
spot with 27 points.
Peter
Blackburn. NTP’s: 5th - Chris
Stewart, 8th - Duangjai
Tusagad, 15th - Martin Todd, 17th
- Takeshi Hakozaki. LFP’s: 9th Ebrahim, 18th - Chris Stewart.

NTP winner K with Mam.
SIAM COUNTRY RESORT
Tuesday saw the group visit
Eastern Star, under clear skies,
with the course in generally
good order, with a small number
of greens having some patches
replaced. The gents played
from the White tees at a testing
6500+ yards, providing a good
test for all. Despite the good
golfing conditions, scores were
modest, with golfers having
difficulty putting 2 good 9s
together. Willem Lasonder (18)
& Trevor Taylor (34) led the way
with 31 points, Willem getting
the nod after signing for 19
points on the back 9, to Trev’s
16. NTPs went to K, Jonathan
& Jeff with 2. Thursday saw a
small field play Greenwood,
with the C & B combination the
allocated test of the day. The
weather was terrible, with the
rain starting after a few holes,
and continuing through most of
the day, before abating with
only 2 or 3 holes to go. The
course was very wet tee to
green, with the greens holding
up very well, considering the
amount of rain falling. No
competition was completed due
to ongoing withdrawals as the
poor weather continued.
Friday was the PSC Tournament
at Greenwood, and the
conditions could not have been
more different, as we had clear
skies, and the course had dried
out considerably. Willem got
edged from the prizes on a
countback in C flight, while Jeff
scored a NTP in A flight, but
Jim & Willem did not go home
empty handed, as both scored
a lucky draw.
Bob Watson and Patrick Poussier.
TROPICAL BERT’S
Tuesday, 16th September:
B
a
n
g
p
r
a
(Stableford). Arriving at
Bangpra it was not surprising
to see the ground soaking wet
and some of the bunkers had
water in them. So with carts not
allowed off the path we played
P.S.C. rules. The Course was
wet and in some places very
wet, still the weather was fine
and all the players thoroughly
enjoyed their day out. One of
the things I usually find is that
when the going gets tough, the
good golfers perform better
than the higher handicappers,
and so it proved on this day,
and with the scribe slowly
sinking in the West as a golfer,
the B Flight is most comforting.
So in the A Flight, 0 to 18, the
winner was Bob Watson with
39 points that meant a gross
73. Great round in very trying
conditions! In second was Brian
Parish with 36 points and in
third was Max Scott with 35
points. So to the needy, The B
Flight, and here the scores
were most modest. I really am
glad to say, I do like the B Flight.
So the winner in the B Flight
was Patrick Poussier with 34
points ahead of Derek Brook in
second with a magnificent 29
points and Nigel Perry in third
with 28 points. Near Pin: Mike
O’Brien, Max Scott, Mashi
Kaneta, Brian Parish.

P.S.C. Monthly Golf
Pattaya Sports Club 136 th
Golf Tournament
Friday, 19 th September:
Greenwood. There were 113
members signed up at
Greenwood – which was
presented in fine condition –
there were 2 no-shows! Leaving
111 – a phone call to the office
is all that is required! Checking
in was swift, with the
Greenwood office staff being
most helpful, together with
sunny weather all was set for a
fine golfing day!
With Golf Chairman Mark being
unwell it was down to the
international team of Dick
Warberg, Peter Blackburn,
Andre Van Dyk, Tom Herrington
and Nigel Cannon to take care
of registration – marking the
technical holes, and acting as
starters on both the 1st and 10th
tees. As the players returned
in a little over 4 hours it was
Peter and Nigel who checked
the cards and calculated the
results. The Low gross winner
was Paul Smith (4) with a score
of 75 gross winning on countback from Mike Allidi. Recently
returned from Australia it was
Bob Watson (4) winning ‘A’
flight, playing stroke play from
the White tees, with 73 net on
count-back from Mike Allidi.
‘B’ Flight also from the white
tees, but playing Stableford,
saw regular monthly player
Bryan Neal (14) take top spot
with 40 points. In ‘C’ Flight, from
the yellow tees, with 42 points,
the best Stableford of the day,
it was Christian Boysen (17)
who took the honours. Clive
Mullins (26) secured ‘D’ Flight
with a fine 41 points. The
Seniors were joined with the
Ladies today but it was the
Ladies who showed the way
with (Oy) Suphattra Dulkys (25)
scoring an excellent 39 points
with P.S.C. Lady Champion Yui
Bietry (8) runner-up with 33
points. The Presentation and
prize
giving
was
at
Shenanigans in Jomtien with
great freshly cooked food by
Dave of the Sportsman and
excellent service provided by
Shenanigans’ staff, those who
attended – that was fewer than
was hoped – had an enjoyable
evening which was over by
8pm. Golf Chairman – Mark
West had recovered enough be
at the Presentation and
following introduction by Nigel
- Mark expressed his
appreciation to today’s players
and the team at the course,
|
Dick, Peter, Andre, Tom and
Nigel for taking care of the
administration and to Noi
Emmerson for the selling of the
50/50 lucky tickets – he also
commented on the excellent
work that happens before the
day by Mai and P.S.C. office
staff – it does make running the
day much easier. Mark went on
to inform members of the
current situation reading the
voucher arrangements P.S.C.
had made with a number of
courses. Nigel then announced
the winners and Mark
presented the prizes. This
month there was an extra-long
putt prize – donated by Tip
Briney to celebrate his 68 th
birthday and won by Larry
PAGE 37
Deverdenne – who promptly
returned his winning back to
P.S.C. This was followed by the
lucky draw. It was time for the
50/50 draw which this month
had additional prizes with 4 x
1,000 baht vouchers kindly
donated
by
Mark
of
Shenanigans and 2 x 1,000
vouchers kindly donated by
Freddy Starbeck for his new
restaurant D’ablo. The final
ticket for the 50/50 was won
by a very happy Thai lady
Panomporn. Important! Note
the next P.S.C. Monthly is on
WEDNESDAY, 22nd October at
Treasure Hill - with the first tee
time at 9am and the
presentation is at Lewiinski’s.
