MASTERCARD MEMORIAL CUP
The MasterCard Memorial Cup, one of the
most prestigious and coveted trophies in
Canadian sport, has a rich tradition that has
shaped the way major junior hockey is played
in North America. The trophy was originally
known as the OHA Memorial Cup and was
donated by the Ontario Hockey Association
in March, 1919, in remembrance of the many
soldiers who paid the supreme sacrifice for
Canada in the First World War.
Competing for it annually are the Champions
of Canada’s three Major Junior Leagues –
Western, Ontario and Quebec – as well as
the host team. All four teams will invade
Brandon to compete in the 2010 Memorial
Cup Championship, May 14–23rd.
Hosting the 2010 MasterCard Memorial Cup
will have a substantial impact economically.
Because Brandon is so closely connected with
the region that it serves, this impact will
be spread throughout western Manitoba.
Hosting the Championship is projected to
inject between $10-15 million dollars into the
region and will require the services of close
to 600 volunteers.
Among the many benefits to hosting is,
because the MasterCard Memorial Cup is a
major sporting event, all major media outlets
will be represented. In fact, all games will be
televised nationally on Rogers Sportsnet and
RDS.
While the games will be front and center, the
Local Host Organizing Committee is excited
about the many events that have been
scheduled throughout the week. From the
Rededication Ceremony at CFB Shilo and the
Opening Banquet at the Victoria Inn to the Golf
Tournament at Clear Lake and CHL Awards at
the Westman Centennial Auditorium. As well,
fans flocking to the Keystone Centre will be
able to check a number of great exhibits
including the Manitoba Hydro Hockey Hall
of Fame, the CHL School Exhibit presented
by Manitoba Public Insurance, the Subway
Memorial Cup Village and the Molson
Canadian Hockey House. The Hockey House
will provide entertainment throughout the
week and will host two special Saturday Night
Socials – Randy Bachman (May 15th) and Tom
Cochrane (May 22nd).
The MasterCard Memorial Cup is much more
than the games itself as thousands of fans
will flock to Brandon this May.
