A Little History About MSU & The State Of Mississippi
Dr. Roy Ruby, Vice President for Student Affairs Emeritus
and Dean of the College of Education Emeritus
Roy Ruby was reared in Yazoo City and Belzoni, Miss.
An alumnus of Mississippi State University, he earned
a bachelor’s degree in 1961 and a master’s in 1966, both
in political science. He also holds a doctorate in higher
education and student personnel from the University
of Mississippi. He worked for Mississippi State for 40
years, including over 17 years as vice president for
student affairs and three years as dean of the College
of Education. For one and a half years, he was both
vice president and dean simultaneously. Ruby retired
from MSU in 2004. In 2008, at the request of the board
of trustees, he served as interim president for several
months.
Ruby has been married to Patricia Randle from Canton,
Mississippi, for 50 years. They are the parents of two

is a special agent with the FBI stationed in Jackson,

in today’s job market? What do employers really look

The Starkville/MSU Symphony Orchestra will perform Wolfgang
Amadeus Mozart’s Much Mozart.
The program will open with Mozart’s last symphony, the 41st, which
is nicknamed The Jupiter. It was called this after the fact based on the
strength and power of the finale fugato movement. It was considered
a colossal work worthy of the largest planet. The second half of the
program will be the Requiem, Mozart’s last work. He died before
completing all the movements, but the work was completed from
sketches by his students. Commissioned by a “mysterious stranger,”
the work was performed for the first time in memory of the composer.
The SSO will be joined by singers from the MSU Choral Department,
the MUW Choral Department under the direction of Dr. Phillip
Stockton, and the Starkville-MSU Symphony Chorus under the
direction of Dr. Doug Browning. Dr. Gary Packwood, Director of
Choral Activities at MSU will conduct the mass choir of over 250
singers and the orchestra as well as four MSU faculty members, Dr.
Tara Warfield, soprano, Dr. Jeanette Fontaine, Mezzo Soprano, Peter
Infanger, Bass, and Ryan Landis, Tenor who will perform as soloists
for the Requiem.
The Starkville Symphony continues to provide orchestra concerts that
are free.

proof
February 27 & 28 / 7:30 pm / McComas Hall Main Stage
The Department of Communication and Theatre MSU will produce
David Auburn’s Proof. Winner of the 2001 Pulitzer Prize, Proof
tackles the line between genius and mental illness as a daughter deals
with the death of her Mathematician father. “Proof is…a play about
scientists whose scenic matters less than their humanity…All four
[characters]—whether loving, hating, encouraging or impeding one
another—are intensely alive, complex, funny, human,” John Simon,
New York. For tickets, visit www.comm.msstate.edu/theatre/.
cotton district
662-323-5132
thecottondistrict.net
The most photographed area in the community and a model for
“New Urbanism,” this district was formerly a collection of row houses
and shanties associated with the neighborhood cotton mill. This district
is now filled with award-winning, brightly colored buildings evocative of
Savannah, Charleston and New Orleans.
downtown starkville
662-323-3322
www.starkville.org
The city’s earliest identity as “Boardtown” disappeared with the
sawmill and boardwalks, but Starkville has kept the flavor and
character of its “boomtown” years around since the turn of the 20th
century. Well-preserved churches and the 1925 Hotel Chester (on the
National Register of Historic Places) add character and charm.
nash street historic district
MSU scholars and staff members built this neighborhood, Starkville’s
earliest subdivision, in Tudor-Revival, bungalow and craftsman styles,
dating from the 1930s and 1940s.
greensboro street historic district
The cotton-hauling wagons that negotiated “Greensboro Road” to
the Tombigbee River were gone by the time Starkville’s prosperous
merchants and professionals made Greensboro Street the address of
choice for their Victorian, Tudor-Revival, bungalow and craftsman
homes from the 1860s through the 1930s.
overstreet historic district
These houses, built close to downtown and to Overstreet School (circa
1894), form Starkville’s largest historic district. Homes range from
ornate Queen Anne to mid- 20th century craftsman and bungalow
styles. An occasional cook’s house or smoke house can be seen behind
the main houses and are reminders of another era. The district is
bordered by Washington Street to the west, Wood Street to the south,
South Montgomery to the east, and Hogan Street to the north.
noxubee national wildlife refuge
www.fws.gov/noxubee
The 48,000-acre Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge, located 13 miles
south of Starkville, is home to bald eagles, as well as alligators, redcockaded woodpeckers, bobcats, and wild turkeys. Both hunting and
fishing are allowed, and birdwatchers, hikers and photographers can
enjoy numerous nature trails and observation points there, as well.
other outdoor recreational opportunities
Near Starkville are the John W. Starr Memorial Forest, an 8,200-acre
natural woodlands park, and the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway,
which offers 1,000 miles of shoreline and 110,000 acres of land and
water for fishing, boating, skiing, camping, hiking, and swimming.
In addition, Starkville has a Parks and Recreation Department which
maintains six public parks within the city limits (662-323-2294,
www.cityofstarkville.org/index.aspx). Starkville in Motion promotes
bike trails, hiking trails, sidewalks, and more within the city (www.

Dudy Noble Field, Polk-Dement Stadium
Dudy Noble Field was built in 1967 and is one of the premier
venues in college baseball. Over the years Dudy Noble has
been nicknamed “The Dude”. Adjacent to The Dude is the

students in the 1960’s, has transformed into college baseball’s
largest tailgate. Sports Illustrated dubbed Left Field Lounge
as, “#1 place to watch college baseball.”

HAIL STATE
MAROON AND WHITE
Hail dear ’ole State!
Fight for that victory today.
Hit that line and tote that ball,
Cross the goal before you fall!
And then we’ll yell, yell, yell, yell!
For dear ’ole State we’ll yell like
H-E-L-L!
Fight for Mis-sis-sip-pi State,
Win that game today!
In the heart of Mississippi
Made by none but God’s own hands
Stately in her nat’ral splendor
Our Alma Mater proudly stands.
State College of Mississippi,
Fondest mem’ries cling to thee.
Life shall hoard thy spirit ever,
Loyal sons we’ll always be.
Chorus:
Maroon & White! Maroon & White!
Of thee with joy we sing.
Thy colors bright, our souls delight,
With praise our voices ring.
Tho’ our life some pow’r may vanquish,
Loyalty can’t be o’er run;
Honors true on thee we lavish
Until the setting of the sun;
Live Maroon and White forever,
Ne’er can evil mar thy fame,
Nothing us from thee can sever,
Alma Mater we acclaim.

WHO ARE THE ALUMNI DELEGATES?
The Alumni Delegates program is an organization that serves as a liaison between Mississippi State University students and alumni.
Their purpose is to improve the understanding of the role of the Alumni Association by educating and involving students in activities
and events of the Association. Student involvement will help foster lifelong relationships while continuing to maintain the Alumni
Association’s mission. Alumni Delegates are today’s student leaders preparing to be tomorrow’s alumni leaders. Thirty-nine students
