The Conejo Valley Bonsai
Society will be hosting a show of
members’ trees. The CVBS was formed twelve years
ago to provide an organization for fellow bonsai
enthusiasts in the Conejo Valley area. The club hosts
lectures, demonstrations, workshops, and nursery
trips. The club membership ranges from bonsai
beginners to professional bonsai artists.

story in timeless
tales filled with wonder, humor and wisdom that speak
to the hearts of young and old alike!
She began telling stories professionally as an Artistin-the-Schools for the Hawaii State Department of
Education, visiting elementary & middle schools
throughout the state. She now shares stories with
audiences of all ages in schools, libraries, zoos,
museums, and at festivals and other special events.

Hong Kong’s first
“directress” was
a San Francisco native and an open lesbian. Esther Eng
(1914-1970) was a true pioneer in many senses. She made
11 Cantonese language films—one in Hollywood, five in
Hong Kong, three in California, one in Hawaii and one in
New York—all for Chinese audiences before, during and
after WWII.
Golden Gate Girls is not just a biographical portrait
of Esther Eng; it is also a tribute to pioneer women
filmmakers working on both sides of the Pacific, and the
courage with which they crossed
boundaries of language, culture,
race and gender.
Taiko is a generic Japanese word for drum, sometimes spelled “daiko” when combined with
another word. Togen Daiko, was formed in April, 1996 at the Oxnard Buddhist Temple. They
play a form of Japanese American Buddhist Taiko drumming and have built most of their
own drums using wine barrels skinned with rawhide.
Togen Daiko’s performances frequently include audience participation to provide opportunity for
the audience, especially children, to experience playing the taiko. Togen Daiko players enjoy performing at
community or multi-cultural events so that they may share the art and culture of taiko drumming with the community.
