How to stay
comfortable
this winter
without
breaking
the bank
T
hroughout the cold days of winter, homeowners are inclined to
turn up the dial on their thermostat to maintain a warm, comfortable
home. However, homeowners may not
realize the presence of drafts and air
leaks throughout the home can lead to
temperature fluctuation and higher than
normal heating bills.
Drafts and gaps in insulation coverage
can be a major contributor to increased
utility bills, as well as inefficient performance of HVAC equipment. Conditioned air continually escapes the home,
leaving the HVAC equipment to work
overtime to compensate in an effort to
reach the thermostat’s set temperature.
Air leakage from walls, windows, ceilings and floors can account for up to 40
percent of the energy lost by your home,
potentially costing homeowners thousands of dollars annually. Plus, the U.S.
Department of Energy suggests air leakage contributes to potential moisture
problems that can affect occupant health
and the home’s durability.
Homeowners can reduce air leakage
in several ways, and the U.S. Department of Energy recommends homeowners take a comprehensive approach.
First, detect where the air leaks are
within your home. A certified HERS
Rater will be able to help you identify
such areas, as well as help assess your
ventilation needs for indoor air quality.
Once all sources of air leaks have been
identified, air sealing techniques and
materials can be applied. Caulking and
weather-stripping are two of the most
popular and common techniques that
can help address air leaks. However,
building experts will suggest considering solutions that go further in terms
of air-sealing by selecting a high-performance building material like spray foam
insulation.
Spray foam insulation, such as Icynene, works well in all climates to seal
the building and fill every gap to stop
air leakage and help reduce the strain
on HVAC equipment. As a solution
that performs effectively year-round,
spray foam insulation helps maintain a
comfortable temperature while helping
to control monthly heating and cooling
expenses.
Additionally, spray foam insulation
helps minimize random airborne moisture and pollutants from entering the
home, ideal for anyone who suffers from
seasonal allergies once the snow melts
and spring arrives. More information
on how spray foam insulation can help
homeowners minimize air leakage is
available online at www.icynene.com.

easy steps to
an organized,
dust-free workshop
Any good DIY project leaves a trail of dust, tools and various scraps around the workshop. While
the end-product is often fulfilling, the remaining cleanup never is. However, having a clean, organized
workshop you can easily maintain isn’t impossible. Here are eight workshop cleanup and organization
tips to eliminate the dust, grime and clutter that’s there, and prevent the messes yet to come.
1
Utilize ceiling space. Many projects need
all the surface area you can get, so when it
comes to storing tools or placing extra extension cords, utilize available space above. It’s a
great spot to hang wire baskets to get seldomused tools out of the way, and place hooks for
getting extension cords off the floor.
2
Choose the right tool. The best way to
remove dust is to do so at the source. The
Dremel brand’s VRT1 combines a versatile
rotary tool with a shop vacuum to cut out the
cleanup and clear dust as you work. The tool
connects to standard wet/dry vacuum hoses
and adapters, and intake ports on the tool
itself collect airborne dust and debris. It’s a
great asset for a dustless workshop, especially
with sanding, engraving and polishing jobs
or when working with dusty materials like
wood and drywall. To find other Dremel tools
for your clean and organized workshop, visit
www.Dremel.com.
3
4
Install magnetic strips. Hand tools, measuring tape and other small items have a way of
going rogue while you’re mid-project. Rather
than throwing them into a big, cluttered bin,
install a few rows of magnetic strips along
the wall of your workspace. It’s an easily visible place to store these smaller items that
often go missing.
Include a retractable vinyl window shade.
The work table often gets the brunt of the
mess from glue spills and paint to dents and
dust. Attaching a retractable vinyl window
shade to the side of your work table enables
you to pull down a protective cover over your
workspace when you need it. The best part is,
most materials can be easily wiped or scraped
off the vinyl when the project is finished, leaving a cleaner, mess-free work table.
5
Consolidate with a battery charging station.
Misplaced battery packs can delay progress
during a project. Avoid the stress and consolidate all of your battery packs into one,
central battery charging station. Create a
long tray out of wood or metal and place
with a dedicated power strip. Use this area as
the landing space for all your battery packs,
so next time a power tool runs low on juice,
you can quickly replace it and keep your projects going.
6
Create a garbage station. Running scraps
to the garbage, searching for a broom and
dustpan, and finding extra garbage bags is a
tiring and unwanted step when you’re in the
middle of a project. To keep from making
multiple trips back and forth to the garbage,
create a handy garbage station that corrals
the broom, garbage container and extra liners in one spot. Place these items on a tray
with wheels and it easily becomes a mobile
station so you can get rid of the garbage as
you go.
7
8
Cover walls with chalk paint. Sometimes an
organized workshop involves making a space
for your creative ideas. Rather than cluttered
notebooks and binders of notes, paint the
walls of your workshop in chalk paint so you
can jot down notes, measurements, timelines
and plans in an easily visible spot. This keeps
your big ideas top of mind and holds you
accountable to any deadlines you have set.
Wipe up water. Dust loves water. Water spills
around the workshop are a great way to
ensure the dust spreads and stubbornly sticks
to where it shouldn’t. To prevent dust from
clinging to every surface, ensure your workspaces are dry prior to working with dusty
materials like wood and drywall.
With a little work, the right tools and a plan in mind, an organized, dust-free workshop is right within reach.

Fight roof damage from ice dams
E
before it’s too late
ach winter, the inevitable happens
as snow falls and the temperature
inside and outside the home fluctuates — icicles form. While icicles are
considered a common sight throughout
the colder months, they can cause
thousands of dollars in damage to your
home.
While homeowners may not realize
it, icicles are the result of ice dams that
form on the roof. Ice dams can silently
wreak havoc on roofs, leaving a trail
of damage unseen until the snow and
ice has all melted away. Wet insulation,
damaged shingles, broken eaves and
downpipes, and potential mold and
mildew can be the result of ice dam
formation.
Ice dams occur when key areas of
your home’s roof space are under insulated. Warm, conditioned air penetrates
through the roof to melt snow high
on the roof. As the melted snow travels down the roof to the colder areas
around the eaves, it refreezes, creating
both an ice dam and icicles that trap
any melted water underneath. This
melted water eventually penetrates back
through the roof into the attic space to
dampen the existing insulation, which
can lead to mold and mildew problems.
While it’s tempting to climb onto the
roof and attempt to fix the problem
yourself, it is dangerous to do so, as is
trying to chip away the icicles from the
ground. Energy Star recommends taking several steps to address the chance
of ice dam formation before winter hits.
Prevent ice dams
with spray foam insulation
Start defending against ice dams
early by clearing away leaves and other
debris from the eaves before the first
snowfall. Energy Star suggests sealing your ducts as well as any air leaks
before investing in additional insulation. Once you’ve taken these initial
steps, you can help prevent ice dam formation by installing a high performance
insulation material such as spray foam
insulation. The airtight seal and high
R-value delivered by spray foam insula-
tion, such as Icynene, helps prevent
any warm air from escaping through
the roof, which leads to icicles and ice
dams.
Installed by professionals, spray foam
insulation works well in all climates to
completely seal the building and stop
air leakage. Not only does this help
reduce the risk of ice dams forming, but
also help reduces the strain on HVAC
equipment that has to work overtime to
compensate for the lost air. Spray foam
insulation both insulates and air seals
the home to help homeowners reduce
their monthly heating and cooling bills.
As a long-term solution, spray foam
insulation helps maintain a comfortable
temperature year round while helping
to control monthly heating and cooling
expenses. While air leakage can cause
bills to sky-rocket as well as lead to ice
dams occurring, a well-insulated attic
can help you get through the cold winter months comfortably. More information on how spray foam insulation can
help curb icicles and ice dams can be
found online at Icynene.com.

Warm up to luxury bathroom upgrades this winter
Back-to-school and the
holidays aren’t the only
welcome seasons that arrive
with cooler weather. Fall
and winter are also a great
time to make some luxury
upgrades to your home. With
children back in school and
holiday guests on the way,
you have the perfect window of time — and incentive — to make changes to
important rooms, such as
bathrooms.
Renovating a bathroom
pays off in multiple ways,
and the more you invest,
the greater your potential
returns. A luxury bathroom
can make a home more
appealing to buyers if you’re
planning to resell; in fact, an
upscale bathroom renovation
returns nearly 60 percent of
your investment, according
to Remodeling Magazine’s
Cost vs. Value Report. If
you’re not selling, adding
innovative, upscale improvements to your bathroom can
enhance your enjoyment of
the room, improve its usability and even help you conserve water and money.
If you’re planning to
improve a bathroom during
cooler weather, here are key
areas where you can create a
luxury effect with innovative
materials:
Fixtures
Bathroom fixtures account
for a significant portion of
a home’s total water usage,
plus they’re key elements in
the room’s overall design.
The toilet you choose for
your bathroom renovation
influences the room’s water
efficiency, and can contribute
to a streamlined, elegant
appearance. For example,
TOTO’s Vespin II 1G toilet
uses innovative Tornado
technology to deliver a powerful, high-performance
flush, using a mere 1-gallon
of water. One-piece construction and CeFiONtect nanotechnology glaze mean the
Vespin imparts an elegant
look while staying cleaner
and reducing the need for
harsh detergents, which
saves money and is better for
the environment.

es the comfort and luxury of any bathroom, making the pursuit of personal
cleanliness better in every way. Warm,
aerated water and myriad technological innovations activate at the touch
of a wireless remote, leaving you more
refreshed than you’ve ever felt after a
bathroom break. Comprised of specially
designed Washlets and water-efficient
toilets, TOTO’s new Connect System
offers a seamless appearance that conceals the Washlet’s power cord and
water supply hose.
New faucets, showerheads and tub
fillers with clean, simple lines also
impart a graceful, luxurious look to a

Natural stone imparts a rich, textured

Whatever type of flooring you choose,

score a decorating theme in the bathroom.
Overhead lighting, illumination
around the vanity area, shower lighting and night-time illumination are
key considerations when planning how
you’ll light your bathroom. Imagination
and innovation can help you create a
lighting scheme that complements your
overall design. For example, rather than
the light bars typically used above mirrors, consider sconces on either side
of the mirror paired with dimmable
recessed lighting in the ceiling above
the vanity area.
Recessed lighting is also a great way
to illuminate a shower, but it’s far from
the only option. Lights at the base of
the shower, inset into the tile work, or
even illuminated showerheads add a
touch of luxury.
The arrival of cool weather is the
perfect time to create the bathroom of
your dreams — before holiday guests
arrive. What’s more, most contractors
have more availability after summer.
You could get a better deal and see your
project accomplished in less time if you
have the work done in fall and winter.

Put your home on autopilot to save money, time and energy
Every homeowner can remember a
time when they wondered, “Did I lock
the front door this morning?” Or, “Did
I leave a light on?” Others can attest to
that feeling of dread knowing their air
conditioner is running full blast while
they’re away on a weekend trip. There’s
nothing worse than worrying about the
security of your home — or your rising
electric bill — while you’re away.
Fortunately, recent advancements in
home technology offer peace of mind
when it comes to energy efficiency,
security and time savings. Almost any
home can be put on “autopilot” without breaking the bank. Many areas of
the home can benefit from some simple
technology upgrades.
Efficiency
Heating and cooling a home accounts
for 50 percent or more of a home’s
energy bill, so it’s important to incorporate the latest technology to make it
as easy as possible to be as efficient as
possible.
“We have seen some great advance-
ments in home technology that maximize the energy efficiency of heating
and cooling products,” says Kyle
Golden, an energy efficiency expert
with Lennox, a leading provider of
home comfort solutions. “For example,
as thermostats become more advanced,
homeowners now have the ability to
optimize home comfort and energy savings.”
One example of these smart thermostats is the Lennox iComfort S30.
Homeowners can maximize energy
savings through its one-touch smart
away mode, which detects when family
members leave and return to the home
and automatically adjusts to an energyefficient setting. The iComfort S30
also is the only thermostat that offers
first-of-its-kind real-time air quality
monitoring.
Water usage also is a concern when
it comes to efficiency. Homeowners can
cut down on water bills by using home
sprinkler systems that incorporate
Wi-Fi technology. These systems allow

homeowners to start or stop sprinklers from anywhere, avoiding water
waste when heavy rains have already
saturated the lawn. Many systems now
even include wireless capabilities that
prevent sprinklers from activating during rain or freezing temperatures.
Security
Homeowners can rest easy thanks to
automated systems that ensure their
home is safe and secure. Companies
now offer products that check, open
and close garage doors directly from a
smartphone, tablet or computer. There
are also lock systems that respond only
to the fingerprints of residents of the
home. If that’s not enough, new technologies send texts or email updates
when doors are locked or unlocked,
and can remotely lock doors through
Wi-Fi. And for those who are wondering who’s there when they’re not, there
are now door bells that allow homeowners to see on their phones who’s at
their door remotely, from any location.

Time savings
Finally, kitchen appliances now
integrate technologies to streamline
the day-to-day routines of homeowners, allowing for maximum time savings. Consumers can take the hassle
out of finding the perfect cooking
setting by using a microwave that
can scan a barcode on a dish and
automatically adjusts to the correct
time and power for the particular
product. Ovens equipped with Wi-Fi
allow cooks to monitor their meals
on a mobile device and put the crock
pot to shame.
Families can also save time while
enjoying the convenience of home
automation. Wi-Fi-enabled mailboxes send text or email alerts when
mail has arrived. Parents can even
save the time it takes to beg their
child to stop playing video games by
using a tool that automatically limits the time spent on an electronic
device.
Peace of mind isn’t all about
expensive, over-the-top upgrades.
Home automation can save time
and money, and offer customized
comfort and security, often through
simple technology tweaks.

6
easy holiday décor
ideas to impress
your guests
Pettis County Showcase of Homes • 19
Whether you’re planning an extravagant party or simply hosting a few
family members, the stress of the holiday season can easily become
overwhelming. With your busy schedule and full to-do list, the key to
successful entertaining is to keep it simple.
If you’re like most people, you’re probably breaking out your traditional
holiday decorations — but why not take it up a notch this year? Here
are some easy ideas to instantly rejuvenate your home, wow your
guests and create a welcoming environment:
Restyle your shelves
If the shelves in your living or dining room are full of books and baskets
the rest of the year, take a moment to declutter. Stash those everyday
items away and replace them with elegant holiday décor like pretty
dishes, serving pieces or china you’re not already using on the dinner
table. You can also sneak in pops of color with ornaments and sprigs of
pine.
Wow your guests with new window treatments
Dressing up your windows is an easy way to give a room a fresh look,
just in time for company to arrive. Consider motorized window coverings for comfort and convenience, as well as energy savings. Your holiday budget will appreciate it year after year. Combined with timers and
sensors, your draperies and blinds will adjust automatically, while you
enjoy your company. With the myLink(tm) app from Somfy, you can
use your tablet or smartphone to control your window treatments while
at home or away. Create the perfect sunrise or sunset scenery with a
built in clock that adjusts daily, optimizing the natural light in your
home. For more information on motorization, visit somfysystems.com.
Create a cheerful greeting display
Don’t just stuff all those holiday cards in a drawer or basket — show
off your favorites in a festive way. Weave a colorful ribbon along the
banister of your staircase or a blank wall and use clips or clothespins
to string them throughout. When guests come over, they’ll love seeing
themselves featured in your display.
Balance your color palette
While bright red and green tend to be the favored holiday hues, this
color scheme isn’t for everyone. If you find yourself shying away from
these colors, opt for metallic tones like silver, gold and bronze. These
shades bring warmth and cheer to a room without taking away from
your existing décor.
Dazzle with lights
Less is more when it comes to sophisticated holiday lights. If you tend
to have more guests to your home during the holidays, it’s important to
keep your walkways and paths brightly lit, especially if you’re in an icy
climate. Spread a few strands of lights along the shrubs or smaller trees
that line the path up to your front door to guide your guests safely into
your home.
Bring warmth with a fancy fireplace
A fireplace is the finishing touch to a cozy winter living room scene.
Not only does it add warmth, it also creates an alluring and inviting
environment. An insert fireplace is a great addition to your home,
whether you want to build new or replace your current fireplace for a
more energy efficient option.
Dress your home to impress this holiday season. These décor tips will
have your guests in awe the moment they walk through the door.

Everything including the kitchen sink: 5 high-impact renovation projects for DIYers
Kitchen sink replacement
Both utilitarian and a vital design
element, the kitchen sink is one project that many DIYers hesitate to take
on. Properly mounting a traditional
sink requires precisely positioning
and securing a number of clips –
while twisting like a contortionist in
the cabinet under the sink. A firsttime DIYer could invest hours of time
and frustration in getting the placement just right.
Enter the first-of-its kind FrankeUSA Fast-In Quick Install System. The
system uses special pre-attached clips
that allow homeowners to simply
drop the sink into place from above
the countertop. Because the clips are
already in perfect position to secure
the sink to the countertop, no special
tools are required for the top-mount
installation. Once the sink is in place,
the DIYer simply presses down until
the Fast-In clips click into position.
The 18-gauge stainless steel sink is
classically styled, offering two generously sized 9-inch-deep basins and a
universal four-hole configuration for
a faucet, spray and accessories. The
sink’s narrow center divider, unique
slim-rim design and extra-deep ledges
provide ample work space, while
helping keep water in the sink and off
countertops.
The system works with laminate,
tile and solid-surface countertops.

Do-it-yourselfers are generally a
"can-do" bunch, willing to tackle just
about any home-renovation project
— except perhaps installing a new

results for kitchen projects that you
never thought you could do yourself
– even installing a new, stainless-steel
kitchen sink.

and time-consuming. Hanging them
requires accurate measuring, proficiency with a level, a keen eye and a
steady hand. But rather than hanging
new cabinets, it’s possible to upgrade
the ones you have, create a fresh look
and improve their efficiency.
If your cabinets are in good shape
but just look dated, cosmetic fixes
are easy. Paint or refinish them in a
hue that fits your design vision, and
replace older hardware with contemporary designs. It’s easy to replace doors
that are damaged or too shabby to
repair; home-improvement stores now
offer cabinet refacing materials, a variety of door styles, and tips for DIYers
who want to swap out cabinet doors.
Countertop refresh
Installing new countertops is also
a significant job that many homeowners choose to leave to professionals.
However, if you don’t have the budget
to pay someone to install new countertops for you, and don’t have the skills

to do it yourself, you can still refresh
your counters.
Laminate is one of the most common
and cheapest materials for countertops. It’s also the material that’s easiest
to make look like something expensive
and professionally installed, such as
granite, concrete or marble. You can
find a number of kits that provide all
the materials and instructions you
need to refinish laminate countertops
for a whole new look.
Beautiful backsplashes
A great backsplash creates a visual
focal point in the kitchen. It is also
functional, protecting walls from
stovetop splatters. You might think
something that looks that good
requires professional installation, but
it’s actually easy to create a beautiful
backsplash.
Depending on your design goals and
the level of difficulty you’re comfortable with, you could choose to install
ceramic or glass tile (which is moderately challenging). Or you might
opt for self-adhesive vinyl tiles that
mimic the look of tin or copper. Look
to online resources like Pinterest for
inspiration.

Superior storage
Every kitchen needs effective storage in order to function optimally.
Professional organizers and storage
designers charge a bundle to customize storage solutions for your cabinets, drawers and pantry. However,
you can get the same effect at a fraction of the cost by purchasing a selection of off-the-shelf organizers. For
example:
•Rollout organizers go easily into
lower cabinets and hold lids, bakeware and serving dishes.
• Pullout mesh drawers make it
easy to organize and access cleaning
products below the sink.
• Turntables fit easily into upper
cabinets and allow you to find spices
quickly.
• Undershelf baskets expand your
storage area and put frequently used
items at your fingertips.
• Gravity-feed can racks — like the
soup displays in the grocery store —
help keep pantries organized.
Kitchen redesign doesn’t have to be
difficult or costly. Some of the most
attractive and effective upgrades are
actually the easiest for DIYers — and
the most rewarding.

Renovating to age in place?
Focus efforts and budgets on
bathrooms and kitchens, experts say
No one relishes the prospect of having to move out
of his or her home due to
age-related health, mobility
or dexterity issues. In fact,
more than half of homeowners 60 and older say they
intend to stay in their current
homes indefinitely, according
to a recent survey by Houzz.
Fortunately for people who
want to stay put, a range
of home improvements can
make it easier to remain in
your home as you grow older.
In fact, 60 percent of those
who plan to age in place
already made renovations in
2014, and 52 percent plan
to renovate this year, Houzz
found. What’s more, if cost is
what’s holding the handful of
non-renovators back, targeting key areas like bathrooms
and kitchens can improve a
house’s long-term livability
even on a modest budget,
says Lee Saunders, founder
of Adapted Living, a California-based company specializing in aging-in-place design
work. Founded in 2007, the
company has helped thousands of homeowners redesign their houses to facilitate
aging in place.
“We’ve seen steadily
increasing demand for this
kind of design work and
products,” Saunders says.
“The growth in the industry
and availability of products
has been huge. Today, the
biggest challenge we have is
getting people to understand
they don’t have to settle for
an industrial or commercial
look in order to renovate
their homes for aging in
place.”
Chris Peterson, a regional
sales director with Saniflo,
agrees. His company makes a
number of above-floor plumbing options designed to work
in spaces where traditional
plumbing is problematic. As
the aging-in-place trend has
grown, the company has seen
increased interest in its products among older homeowners who are renovating.
“Budget is typically a consideration for these types
of projects and above-floor
plumbing is often more cost-
effective than traditional
plumbing for homeowners
who need to add or relocate
a bathroom or reconfigure a
kitchen,” Peterson says.
Homeowners can maximize the value of their renovation dollars by focusing
their aging-in-place improvements on bathrooms and
kitchens, Saunders adds.
Better function in
bathrooms
Often when people develop
mobility or dexterity issues,
they find their existing
bathrooms are not in a convenient location in the house,
or aren’t configured with

Renovating
From page 22
safety in mind. They may
need to add a bathroom in
a small space or reconfigure
the ones they have. When
renovating an existing bath
or creating a new bathroom
where one did not previously
exist, homeowners should
keep key considerations in
mind.
Multiple light sources
can help reduce glare and
shadows — two dangerous
visual effects in bathrooms,
where most home falls occur.
Flooring material should be
slip-resistant and grab bars
are essential in showers, bath
tubs and near toilets. Shower
heads should be on a slide
bar that allows the spray to
be raised or lowered depending on the needs and height
of the user. Showers and faucets should be controlled by
levers, rather than knobs, and
all showers should have thermostatic controls to reduce
the risk of burns.
Whether you’re adding a
half bath in a corner of your
master bedroom where no
bathroom existed before, or
replacing a high step-over
tub with a roll-in shower,
traditional plumbing can be
costly — especially in homes
with slab foundations and
no readily accessible belowfloor drainage. Saunders uses
the Sanigrind Pro system by
Saniflo to minimize the need
to break through concrete.
The product can handle
drainage for a shower, sink
and toilet. For more information, visit www.saniflo.com.
Creating more
usable kitchens
Kitchens are another highutility and high-risk area of
the home for seniors. Mobility and dexterity challenges
can make everyday tasks like
cooking and cleaning difficult
to achieve in an ordinary
kitchen.
Saunders recommends
seniors focus on improvements to enhance accessibility, such as installing lifts for
countertops, cabinets, cooktops and sinks. These electric
lifts allow homeowners to
adjust the height of key work
areas depending on whether
they’re sitting or standing
while using the spot.
Above-floor plumbing can
also be useful in kitchen
renovations, where homeowners and designers desire
a more open floor plan to
accommodate wheelchair
users. Above-floor plumbing
allows you to relocate a sink
or create an “island” without
the expense of extensively
replumbing the entire kitchen, Peterson notes.
To learn more about abovefloor plumbing and products
that enhance living-in-place
renovations, visit www.saniflo.com. To learn more about
adaptive living products and

Maximize fall and winter energy savings with simple tips
(MS) — By Scott McGillivray
As temperatures decrease during the fall
and winter months, energy usage and
costs tend to climb. These five energysaving tips for your home will ensure
the comfort of your family and your
wallet.
1. Adjust your thermostat. Lower the
heat on your thermostat while you are
away from home and before you go to
bed. Better yet, invest in a programmable thermostat so you don’t have to
give it a second thought.
2. Seal gaps around windows and doors.
Cracks and gaps around windows and
doors can let cold drafts into your
home. Weather-stripping or caulking
will seal these problem areas and keep
your home warmer, without having to
turn up the heat.
3. Insulate well to protect your home
from the cold. Add insulation to your
basement walls, headers or attic to
make a noticeable difference in the temperature of your home and its energy
consumption. A mineral wool product
specifically designed for thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt,
is ideal. This type of batt insulation will
also provide protection from fire, moisture and unwanted noise. Adding insulation is one of the simplest and most-cost
effective ways to increase home energy
efficiency.
4. Make use of natural sources of heat.
Pull back your curtains to let natural
light in. The sun can help to warm a
room with its rays on a bright fall or
winter day. If there are any large windows in your home that don’t receive
much sunlight, keep the curtains closed
to form a barrier from the cold.
5. Use ceiling fans to your advantage. In
the winter, set the fan to rotate clockwise. The blades will pull the air up and
around, redirecting warm air that rises
back down into the living space.
The effect can help you lower your
thermostat by two degrees in
the winter. While
cutting back on
energy may
seem more challenging as the weather
gets colder, it doesn’t have to be. There
are many no- or low-cost methods to
conserve energy that can provide consistent savings over time.

Five
tips to get a whole
new look in the
bathroom, for less
A bathroom remodel is one
of the most valuable home
improvement projects you can
undertake. According to Remodeling
Magazine’s 2015 Cost vs. Value
Report, a mid-range bathroom
remodel of $16,000 recoups 70
percent of its value at the time of
resale.
But what if you want a great
bathroom on a smaller budget? Or
crave better efficiency and function,
but aren’t willing to lose the use
of your bathroom during weeks of
renovation? Fortunately, a bathroom
can get a fresh look with improved
function and efficiency, without
the hassle and expense of a full
remodel.
Here are five easy improvements
that can rejuvenate your
bathroom — and they can each be
accomplished in just one day!

1. Replace sink faucets
Faucets are more than just a functional bathroom element — they are the “jewelry” of a bathroom. A new faucet can redefine the complete appearance of a vanity, and evoke the feeling of a whole new design for the bathroom. Manufacturers
like American Standard offer styles that fit with virtually any bath decor: classic
to contemporary, cosmopolitan to country, refined to rustic. An online search for
faucet designs will yield numerous options. A breadth of options are available at
local home improvement stores or a kitchen and bathroom showrooms.
Replacing faucets can also make your bathroom more water efficient. Older
faucets generally have a higher flow rate than newer models, so more water, and
money, goes down the drain. American Standard bathroom faucets have a flow
rate of just 1.5 gallons per minute, using 32 percent less water than standard faucets, and are WaterSense-certified for high performance and water efficiency.
2. Repaint
There’s a reason why painting is on virtually every list of “must-do” home
improvements — it’s a fast, easy and economical way to completely change how
a room looks and feels. Most bathrooms will require only a single gallon of paint
and one day to repaint. You can save money by doing the job yourself, too.
When choosing paint colors for a mini-remodel, remember that the bathroom
is an oasis of relaxation, not just a place to shower and brush your teeth. Soothing, neutral tones on the walls will help inspire this sense of calm, while providing a placid backdrop for pops of color in your accessories and linens.
3. Swap out hardware
If the faucet is the crown jewel of your bathroom, the cabinet and drawer
hardware are lovely accents to tastefully complement it. Once you’ve replaced
that tired old faucet, it’s time to look at cabinet knobs and drawer pulls. Look
for options that match the style statement made with your faucet — traditional,
transitional, contemporary, eclectic, etc.
Keep in mind that coordinating the knob finish to the faucet will create a
pleasing, cohesive look for your overall bathroom design. Popular finishes are
brushed nickel, polished chrome, oil rubbed bronze and satin brass. Swapping
hardware can be a fast, cost-effective way to underscore your remodeling theme.
4. Upgrade your shower
Sure, a single spray showerhead that’s 10 years old can be adequate to get you
clean. But a shower should be an experience – a satisfying and relaxing one.
Replacing a single spray showerhead with a multi-function model can provide
varied spray patterns for different purposes – and help create a more spa-like
experience in your bathroom.
Plus, a new showerhead can save you money in the long run, especially if your
current one is dated and inefficient. Water-saving models like the American
Standard FloWise Water Saving Showerhead use significantly less water than
traditional models. A special aerator spins a mere 1.5 gallons of water per minute to make it feel like a powerful spray.
5. Freshen the softer side
Just as new window treatments look great in the living room, they make a big
difference in bathrooms, too. Update window treatments — roman shades, miniblinds, valances, full-length sheers — whatever style works in your bathroom.
Splurge on an upscale shower curtain and throw rungs that match the window
treatments, and finish off with a luxurious set of towels.
Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to cost a bundle or take a lot of time. A few
simple updates can make all the difference, at a fraction of the cost.

Exterior lighting improves the safety and appearance of a home
When drafting a to-do list
for home improvements that
can increase home value and
appeal, several renovations
may be atop homeowners’
lists. While kitchen or bathroom remodels may be popular
renovations, homeowners also
should consider outdoor lighting schemes that can make
homes safer and more alluring.
Outdoor lighting serves various purposes. Such lighting
can draw attention to more
impressive parts of a property.
In addition, such lighting can
improve security and deter
criminals.
To get started, homeowners
should first examine the exteriors of their homes and make
note of existing lighting and
where improvements can be
made. If you’re not sure where
to begin, speak with an electrician or a landscape designer,
each of whom can offer sug-
gestions on lighting and which
options are the best fit for your
particular property.
Next, you’ll want to consider
efficiency and function. The
United States Department of
Energy suggests incorporating energy-efficient lighting,
including energy-saving LED
bulbs or fluorescent lights,
into your plans. Timers and

How to ensure your home stays warm throughout the winter
With some parts of the country
already experiencing dipping temperatures and light flurries, it makes
sense for homeowners to think about
how to keep their home comfortable
and performing optimally throughout
the colder months. Putting off winterization efforts can lead to higher
utility bills and fluctuating indoor
temperatures over the cold winter
months.
Drafts and gaps in insulation coverage can be a major contributing
factor to higher utility bills and can
hinder the performance of your furnace. Warm air continually escapes
the home due to these gaps, forcing
the furnace to work overtime to
compensate. In addition to this, the
U.S. Department of Energy suggests
air leakage contributes to potential
moisture problems that can affect
occupant health and the home’s durability.
So how can you ensure that your
home stays warm and your family
remains comfortable throughout winter? Caulking and weather-stripping
are two of the most popular and
common techniques that can help
address air leaks. Additionally, having your furnace equipment professionally maintained is another simple
measure. However, building experts
will suggest solutions that go further
in terms of air-sealing.
High performance insulation
One of the most effective methods
to eliminate air leakage and live comfortably during the colder months is
ensuring your home is insulated with
a high performance insulation solution. Traditional insulation is prone
to leaving gaps and absorbing moisture, which in turn can have a significant impact on occupants while
allowing for significant energy loss.
Replacing your home’s insulation
with a high-performance material
such as spray foam insulation, will
both insulate and air seal the home
and lead to immediate cost savings.
Insulation experts from Icynene suggest that quality spray foam insulation can noticeably reduce heating
and cooling bills, which continue
over the long-term.
Installed by professionals, spray
foam insulation, like that available
from Icynene, works well in all climates to completely seal the building, filling gaps to stop air leakage
and help reduce the strain on your
furnace (or air conditioner during
warmer months). As a long-term
solution, spray foam insulation helps
maintain a comfortable temperature
year round while helping to control
monthly heating and cooling expenses. Thanks to spray foam insulation’s
air-sealing qualities, homeowners can
reduce the size of their heating and
cooling equipment since less effort
is required to heat or cool the home,
according to InsulationSmart.com.
While air leakage can cause energy
bills to sky-rocket, a well-insulated
home and economical winterizing
can help you get through the cold
winter months. Homeowners can

the right insulation for their home on
