MARIE Curie’s annual Great
Daffodil Appeal launches on
Friday 28th February and the
charity is asking local people
to make a donation and wear
a daffodil pin to support the
cause.
Running throughout March,
the appeal is Marie Curie’s
biggest fund-raiser and is vital
in helping Marie Curie nurses
provide free, hands-on nursing
care to people with terminal
illnesses, both in their own
home or one of the charity’s
nine hospices.
Fund-raisers in the Inverness
area have already been in action
to raise money for the cause.
Paula Dick, chairperson
of Marie Curie’s Inverness
fund-raising group, and Susan
Maclennan, Inverness Marie
Curie nurse, recently completed
a life-changing 360km cycle
through Vietnam, raising over
£3500 for the appeal.
Starting in Vietnam’s largest
city, Ho Chi Minh, they made
their way through the paddy
fields in the south of the country
before crossing into Cambodia
and finishing at the UNESCO
world heritage site of Angkor
Wat.
“It was quite an awesome
and inspiring experience,” said
Paula. “I met a truly wonderful
bunch of new friends and it has
certainly focused me on not just
my own personal goals, but how
important these challenges are
to Marie Curie in fund-raising
for the nurses.
“I am already considering my
next challenge and feel inspired
and determined to get more
people involved.”
Marie Curie Highland is also
running a Sahara Trek, starting
in November. Seven Highland
business women, the “Desert
Divas”, have put themselves
forward and will be pushing
their personal, physical and
emotional boundaries for the
Great Daffodil Appeal.
Research shows around 63
per cent of people would like
to die at home if they had a
terminal illness, with a sizeable
minority opting for hospice
care.
But more than 50 per cent
of cancer deaths still occur in
hospital, the place people say
they would least like to be.
The funds raised by the
appeal help those with terminal
illnesses spend their final weeks,
days or hours with the people
and things they love close by.
“We need everyone in the
Highlands to get behind the
appeal by donating and wearing
one of our daffodil pins during
March,” said Vonnie Carson,
community fund-raiser for
Marie Curie Highland.
“Every penny you can give
is vital in helping Marie Curie
nurses provide more care to
people with terminal illnesses
in their own homes as well as
emotional support for their
families.”
There are many Great Daffodil
Appeal events to get involved
in locally, including collections
at the Eastgate Centre on 1st
March from 10am to 4pm,
Morrisons in Inverness on 7th
and 8th March from 10am to
6pm, Tesco at Inverness Retail
Park on 21st and 22nd March
from 10am to 6pm, and Tesco at
Inshes on 28th and 29th March
from 10am to 6pm.
As well as local volunteer
collectors, Marie Curie will be
supported by the Lions Clubs
of the British Isles and Ireland
in March, with hundreds of
collections being held by Lions
Club members across the
country on behalf of the charity.
Daffodil pins can be picked
up from Marie Curie volunteer
collectors, local stores and
Marie Curie Shops.
