ID Chair Concept
Antonio Citterio and Vitra have pooled 25 years of experience in developing office chairs to create the ID Chair range
of office swivel chairs. The different models, which can be
configured according to the modular concept, lend a subtle
elegance and colourful variety to the office. They offer a
wider range of different options, allowing the users to adapt
the chairs’ functionality, comfort and aesthetics to suit their
individual requirements.
Developed by Vitra in Switzerland
Design: Antonio Citterio
The ID Chair Concept consists of three basic types:
ID Mesh, ID Soft, ID Trim and ID Air, each with different
backrests. The pleasantly soft seat padding and the
supportive backrests provide a high degree of comfort.
The chair is now available with the new “ProMatic” chair
mechanism as well as with the existing “FlowMotion”
mechanism. “ProMatic” automatically adapts to the weight
of the user. The user therefore only has to set the seat
height. ProMatic is ideal for touchdown workstations and
for conference and meeting areas of all kinds. The FlowMotion mechanism and its many functions can be set to
the exact requirements of the respective user.
ID Mesh

ID Trim Cap
ID Trim
ID Trim L
ID Air
The innovative spacer fabric fitted over
ID Mesh’s backrest is translucent and
open like a net – while also being as
comfortable as a thin cushion.
The fully upholstered, height-adjustable backrest ensures a high level of
comfort. Clear lines give ID Soft a
formal, yet discreet appearance.
ID Trim Cap gives a clear signal:
Please do not disturb! Because its cap
is sound-proof, ID Trim Cap is highly
suitable for use in micro-concentration
zones in open-plan offices.
ID Trim’s backrest provides the comfort
of an upholstered back whilst being
almost as thin as a mesh backrest. It is
therefore a good alternative to these
two construction types.
With its high backrest, ID Trim L
provides additional support for the
neck region and can also be used
as an executive chair.
ID Air’s plastic backrest supports the
back, is flexible and is perforated for
air circulation. It is also a cost-effective
solution.

Health and biomechanics
Special measurements show that use of the FlowMotion
forward-tilt function activates abdominal and back
muscles. Activating these muscles in turn stabilises the
lumbar spine. Moreover, these measurements show that
the forward-tilt action also activates the lower spine
region. This increases the supply of nutrients to the
intervertebral discs.
A study conducted by the
Institute for Biomechanics
of the Swiss Federal Institute
of Technology Zurich (ETH)
has shown that the scope
for movement offered by
ID Chair is extensively used.
This promotes healthy,
dynamic sitting.
ID Chair – one concept;
endless possibilities
The ID Chair Concept offers configuration options
for the seat, backrest, mechanism, base, armrests
and accessories. This enables companies and their
staff to define the chair that best suits them and
their requirements. At the same time, all chair
versions share a technical and visual basis. This
has a positive effect on the overall aesthetic, as
well as on maintenance and service.
The FlowMotion mechanism enables
the user to change to a forward-tilting
position by shifting his/her weight.
Sustainability and costs
The ID Chair provides
support in every position.
In constructing the ID Chair, components were kept to a
minimum and, wherever possible, lightweight, separable
materials were used. The chairs are up to 95% recyclable
and consist of up to 48% recycled materials. They have
been awarded the environmental protection labels
“Blauer Engel für emissionsarme Polstermöbel” (Blue
Angel for low-emission upholstered furniture) and
“GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality Certified”.
All ID Chairs share the same technical platform, thereby
making maintenance and servicing much more straightforward. The wear parts of the chair can be easily
replaced, the backrest and seat can be dismantled
without the need for special tools, and the seat covers
are easy to remove.
Movement activates the muscles
and reduces the strain on intervertebral discs.
Green User Agreement
The long life of the ID Chair not only has a positive impact on the environment, but is also of economic benefit
to the company. This is why Vitra goes beyond the legally
mandated warranty to offer its project customers the
Green User Agreement. Thanks to this sustainable service
agreement for project customers, companies can determine not only the purchase cost of the chair, but also all
the costs of use, i.e. the Total Cost of Ownership for the
chair’s entire useful life.
Year 1
The customer undertakes to subject the product to
proper use and maintenance. In return, Vitra agrees to
rectify or replace any manufacturing or material faults
in the ID Chair and to replace wear parts free of charge.
Year 5
Five years after signing the Green User Agreement,
a service check is performed on the ID Chairs on the
customer’s premises. This extends the agreement by
five years.
Year 10
The next service check takes place. The Green User
Agreement is extended for a further five years.
Year 15
The ID Chairs can now be returned to Vitra for professional recycling.
The FlowMotion mechanism promotes dynamic sitting.
