A Message from
Mr. Shoji Hirao
Dear Dealer,
I am very glad to be in Canada to see
and meet our valuable customers. This
is the second overseas job assignment
of my career. My first assignment was in
the US, and I’m pleased to return to the
North American market.
Since my arrival, I have learned plenty
of things about Canadian culture and
customs, and I’ve met plenty of nice
people along the way. Needless to say,
I’ve enjoyed my time here so far!
In early March we experienced a tragedy
in Northern Japan caused by an incredible
earthquake and tsunami. Due to this
unfortunate incident, we’ve lost some
employees at our Sendai Factory. We
would like to express our deepest
condolences to these victims and their
families. During this time, we received
plenty of words of encouragement from
our dealers, and we appreciate this very
much.
Thanks to the support of many, the
country of Japan is recovering, and our
Sendai factory is once again up and
running. We’re pleased to announce that

Toyo tires Expands
Toyo Tires has expanded their warehouse
space at their Richmond, B.C. head office
location. As of August 1st, 2011 they will
acquire an additional 30,000 sq. ft., increasing
the total floor space to 110,000 sq. ft.
The addition improves efficiency and customer
service for the 334 tire dealers, and 336 car
dealerships serviced by the warehouse.
“Expanding our facility shows our dealer
network that we are committed to providing
them with better stocking levels and better
service standards”, said Dave Burry, Distribution
Manager for Western Canada. The new floor
space eliminates the need for outside storage,
creating faster response times to fill customer
orders. It also provides flexibility in terms
of storage, thereby increasing efficiency by
prioritizing stock.
Toyo Tire Canada also has warehouses in
Montreal and Toronto, in order to service
both tire dealers and national accounts
across the country.

The new toyotires.ca website, which
launched in May 2010, was designed as a
resource tool not only for consumers but
for dealers as well. The Dealer Resources
section of the website includes items
such as the support site, promotional
items and apparel site and the training
site which gives dealers both advertising
and product knowledge information.
New for June 2011, Toyo Tires launched
the point of purchase booking site as a
part of the Dealer Resources section.
The point of purchase booking site
displays all of the coopable and nocharge point of purchase items such as
brochures, posters and tire stands and
enables dealers to place their orders direct with their local warehouse through
an online order form. In addition to the
standard POP items, dealers also have
the option to book event display items
such as tents, backdrops and flags. The
event items do not cost anything to
book and are ideal for dealer events such
as tent sales or seminars.
The objective of the new website is to

TALK
TECH
Welcome to Tech Talk with John!
with JOHN
I'm John, the "tech guy" over here at Toyo Tire Canada and I'll be using this column to
provide you with practical and useful information and tips about tires. First up, storing tires!
Since heat and exposure to the elements are the primary factors that influence a tire's aging process,
drivers can prolong their tire's life by minimizing their impact. Here are some tips for storing tires that will
not be used continuously:
»»
Do not store a vehicle with weight on its tires for extended periods of time. Long-term inactivity is more harmful to
tires than short weekly drives that flex the tires and help maintain oil dispersion within the rubber compounds.
»» DO NOT APPLY ANY TIRE DRESSINGS. Tire compounds are
formulated to resist ozone cracking or weather checking.
»» Keep the tires out of direct sunlight. The sun’s ultraviolet rays and radiant heat are detrimental to rubber.
»»
Place each tire in its own airtight plastic bag for storing. Avoid allowing any moisture and remove as much air as
practical. Close the bag tightly and tape it shut. This helps to reduce oil evaporation.
»» If tires are stored off the vehicle, but still installed on rims, the tire pressure should be reduced to approx 103 kPa (15 psi).
summer2011
»»
Place the tires in a cool, dry
location. It is better to place tires
in a dry basement than outdoors or in a hot garage or attic. The basement temperatures will tend to remain cooler and more stable, while out
door, garage and attic temperatures will often become hot and face daily fluctuations in temperature.
»» Keep the tires away from sources of ozone. Electric motors that use contact brushes generate ozone. Keep your tires away from the furnace, sump pump, etc.
»» Ensure that the tires are re-inflated to their correct tire pressure according to the vehicle placard prior to re-
installation or re-introduction to service.

Toyo tires puts a green foot forward with the new versado eco
As hybrids and fuel-efficient compacts
gain popularity in the market, so do
their accompanying replacement parts.
Tires have always played a significant
role in improving a car’s ability to be
more environmentally friendly. Tires that
are more fuel efficient and last longer
really complement the technology that
the manufacturer has put into the car to
reduce their CO2 emissions. Last year,
Toyo Tires' announced their Tecology
initiative, which is the use of their proprietary technology to develop eco-friendly
tires that still carry the highest standards
for comfort, safety and performance. This
year, they’ve put that initiative to action
with the release of the new Versado Eco.
5
ON TRACK
The Versado Eco is Toyo Tires’ newest
addition to their Versado luxury all-season
line and was developed specifically for
hybrids and environmentally-friendly
compacts. This eco-friendly all-season
luxury tire provides a quiet and comfortable ride, while helping lower fuel
consumption. Staying true to their
commitment to the environment, Toyo
Tires' designed the Versado Eco with
environmentally friendly material in both
the compound and carcass of the tire.
Developed with a silica-based tread
compound, the Versado Eco incorporates
a product called green powder. Green
powder, a naturally-derived material,
reacts with the silica in the compound to
disperse particles, thereby creating less
friction and further improving treadwear
and rolling resistance.
The use of green powder in the compound
is combined with current features found
on the Versado luxury performance line
that enhance performance and comfort.
Wet and dry performance is improved
through Toyo Tires' Multi-wave Sipe
technology, which allows more tread to
stay in contact with the road surface. The
Versado Eco’s quiet ride characteristics
are a result of its three pitch variation
pattern and Toyo Tires' patented Silent
Wall technology, which minimizes pattern

compound, the tread pattern is built
with a rigid rib design that improves rolling resistance and overall handling.
Traditionally, a tires’ carcass is developed
from freshly produced petroleum-derived
fibers. Until now, recycled polyester has
never been approved for use in tire
manufacturing due to strict specification
guidelines that make it necessary for
the polyester to meet requirements in
strength, adhesion to rubber, elasticity
and fatigue resistance.
Toyo Tires is one of the first manufacturers to develop a tire that utilizes recycled
polyester fibers while meeting the strict guidelines required
for tire development. They were able to incorporate recycled
polyester into the new Versado Eco through the use of an
summer2011
advanced recycling technology that chemically separates
additives and colorants from polyester products like water
bottles - an industry first. A process is
put in place whereby the material can be
purified to the extent where the quality
is equivalent to that of petroleumderived polyester. Utilizing recycled
polyester cord throughout the casing is
just another way that Toyo Tires is able
to demonstrate their commitment to
minimizing their environmental impact
during the manufacturing process.
In the future, Toyo Tires will continue
to utilize their Tecology initiative to
develop and broaden their eco-friendly
tire offering. Until then, the Versado Eco
will be an excellent option to meet the needs of environmentally-friendly hybrids and eco- friendly compacts. Starting
July 1, 2011 it will be available in nine sizes ranging from 15”
to 18”, in T, H, V and W speed ratings.

Introducing the all new
The release of Toyo Tires' latest addition to their winter passenger tire lineup
will arrive this fall. Designed specifically for Canadian winters, the Observe GSi5
was crafted to perform in snow, slush and icy conditions while maintaining
excellent wear life. It features Toyo Tires’ latest development in Total Control
Sipe Technology (TCST) and was created using a new winter compound made
partially of environmentally-friendly material.
One of the objectives when designing the
Observe GSi5 was to ensure that it helped
provide traction in all directions, particularly
in slick winter driving conditions. The
Observe GSi5’s new tread design features
Toyo Tires' Spider and Swing sipes, which
provide added traction in all directions on
both snow and ice. A shallower sipe, called
First Edge, also provides extra traction
when the tire is new. These sipes work in
conjunction to form Total Control Sipe
Technology. A feature called the Snow
Claw, which is located within the tire
grooves next to the tread block, provides
traction in deep snow while also enhancing
block rigidity and improving wet and ice
traction. To help maintain control on rutted
winter roads, the Observe GSi5 also features
the Arrow Lift Buttress design which provides added tread grip. It’s located on the
upper side of the tire, where the sidewall
meets the tread pattern.
The new silica compound of the Observe
GSi5 provides excellent flexibility at low
temperatures and features environmentallyfriendly carbonic bamboo powder and
Toyo Tires’ Microbit Technology. Carbonic
bamboo powder, which is a naturally
derived material from bamboo charcoal,
absorbs the water layer on top of the
ice, thereby providing more traction and
control. Microbit Technology features
thousands of crushed walnut shells which
are incorporated into the Observe GSi5
compound. Walnut shells are one of the
hardest natural substances in the world
and provide added control by scratching
into ice.

Toyo Tires is scheduled to release a new winter tire commercial this fall featuring the new Observe GSi5. The commercial
incorporates the Engineered for the Real World campaign, which focuses on family-oriented activities as well as Toyo Tires’ safety,
reliability and performance attributes for winter tires. The commercial, which is based on a
family winter vacation, is set to air across Canada this fall and was developed
in part with digital animation.
Toyo TireS hosts journalists in japan
2011 is an exciting year for Toyo Tires
with the launch of the new Versado Eco,
Proxes T1 Sport and Observe GSi5. With
journalists playing a pivotal role when
launching new products, we decided to
host a media trip to Japan to give them
an inside perspective on our company
and product line. The trip included both
testing and information sessions.
Japan isn’t the first place that comes to
mind when testing tires for Canadian
winters. But the Toyo Saroma Proving
ground, located on the far northern island
of Hokkaido, proved to be a worthy stage
to showcase the new Observe GSi5. The
testing track included stretches of snow,
slush and ice that incorporated turning,
slalom and braking tests. It was immediately evident to our journalists that the
tire’s new Spider Sipe, Swing Sipe and
bamboo-charcoal, silica compound were
fit even for the harshest Canadian winters.
The next portion of the trip involved a
visit to the Toyo Itami Technical Centre,
which is just a quick train ride away from
the heart of Osaka. Acting as an R&D
centre and information hub between
global sales and manufacturing
summer2011
subsidiaries, the Technical Centre was
the perfect place to educate the journalists on our product offering and
corporate background. The visit started
off with a classroom session where the
benefits of the Proxes T1 Sport, Versado
ECO, Observe GSi5, Versado LX II, and
Tourevo LS II were examined.
The next portion was an interview with
Mr. Takuji Yamamoto, General Manager
of the Tire R&D Division. Mr. Yamamoto
was diligent in describing Toyo Tires’
viewpoint in terms of technology, the
ability to react quickly to market demands
and the future of Toyo’s product line and
eco-friendly initiatives.
Plenty of information regarding Toyo
Tires was dicovered over these two
days and the trip was topped off with a
stopover at the Osaka Auto Show, where
Toyo Tires were placed on a variety of
modified vehicles. Overall the journalists
experienced a well-rounded overview of
our product, company and the culture in
which we were found!
