Junior School
What a busy term we have had so far! I believe our Olympic Day
was a great success, as was Book Week. Our students enjoyed all
the planned activities. Dressing up as a book character is always
a favourite part of the week. Thank you to the Book Week and
Olympic Day Committees for all their hard work.
Thanks also to Leone Shapter for organising a Science Week
performance. The students enjoyed watching the Drones in action.
Congratulations to Julie Foley and Ryan Stott for preparing our
Junior Band so well, as I hear the Showcase was brilliant this year.
A big thank you to Craig Bennet and Kate O’Driscoll for all their
hard work during my Long Service Leave.
We are now looking forward to the Year 5 PYP Exhibition. The
students are busily working towards the finale in Week 8.
Sports Day is on the last day of this term, and what a lovely way to
finish off a very busy term.

Book Week 2016
This year’s Book Week theme, Australia: Story Country, was a source
of inspiration for the many activities that took place in the Junior
School last week. Students were treated to an entertaining and
engaging talk by Australian author, Michael Wagner. Michael shared
some of his books with the students and also personal experiences
about the importance of making mistakes and learning from them.
The Year 3 students paid a visit to the Woodcroft Community
Library where they heard from Mark McBride about illustrating,
using different techniques and the importance of the choices you
make when you create artworks. A subtheme was being persistent
and demonstrating resilience in the face of rejection.
25 August 2016: Issue 13/2016
To round this year’s celebrations, students will experience a
performance by Splash Theatre.
Special thanks to the Book Week committee and Junior School
staff who contributed their time and efforts to make the week a
memorable time for the students.

Year 6/7 Points Day
Since its inception in 2014, the Year 6/7 Points day has been keenly
contested and provided an opportunity for all students to gain
skills in a range of events that are offered at Athletics Carnival.
The students gain points for their House which contribute to the
overall tally at the Athletics Carnival being held on Wednesday 14
September at Santos Stadium. Our Year 9 House Captains and
Year 8 Student Leaders are heavily involved in the administration,
participation and management of the students, and their care and
guidance are always exceptional.
The freezing wind, and the odd hailstorm in between bursts of
sunshine, could not dampen the enthusiasm and spirit of all our
Year 6/7 students as they went for gold in 8 events. The weather
caused the cancellation of the High Jump, but this was replaced
by the popular “One Chuck Chicken Chuck”. The day was lots of
fun and the success was due to our Middle School leaders who
managed each event, recorded all the results, and encouraged the
younger students to do their best.

Year 8 Immunisations
On Thursday students got into the spirit by dressing up as their
favourite book character. The library was beautifully decorated
with a myriad of artworks, all of which aligned with the theme,
and many classes participated in Book Week activities in their
classrooms and the Junior School Library.
HPV Dose 3 takes place on Thursday 1 September. Students on
this day can wear PE uniform. It is important that students are
hydrated and eat breakfast to support their bodies.

The Present
Many Year 12 students are coming to accept that their schooling
journey is quickly drawing to an end. This is a time of mixed
emotions as they consider what their future might hold. I have
heard that some are asking whether all the hard work is worth it
and whether there will even be employment at the end.
This question reminds me of the story of the aged carpenter
who approached his boss of many years to hand in a letter
of resignation. His boss acknowledged his many years of loyal
service, tremendous effort and attitude, and then asked him to
undertake one final task: to build one last home.
The carpenter reluctantly took on the job. Feeling drained and
half-hearted about the project, he took many short cuts to
accelerate his work and make it easier. At the completion of
the rushed, sub-standard house, he handed over the keys to his
boss. His boss smiled and handed the keys back saying, “My loyal
friend, for all your years had work, I give to you this house as a
parting gift.”
We should remember that we are not necessarily in control of
the future, but we are in charge of the present, and are called to
be the best we can be at all times.

International Student Exhibition 2016
During Week 4 of term 3, the College held its first exhibition
of artworks by International Students. The aim of the exhibition
was to celebrate the wonderful talents of our International
Students and the contributions they make to the College. The
exhibition included photography, drawing, painting, etching and
sculpture.
On opening day, the school gallery was buzzing with students
accompanied by beautiful classical piano, played by International
student, NG WENG (11KO). The students also ran a lunchtime
workshop in making origami cranes, giving all students an
opportunity to contribute to a collaborative artwork. The
exhibition was a great opportunity for our students to celebrate
the cultural diversity of our College. A special thank you to the
International students involved.

Visual Arts Statement
From the earliest times, artistic expression has been common to all
cultures as human beings make statements through a variety of nonverbal forms and create objects that are aesthetically pleasing. Beyond
barriers of language, the discovery of the cultural values of civilizations
through their artistic production is one of the best ways to promote
international understanding.
