Learn kayak skills at a pool
If you’ve been thinking about getting
out on the water but don’t have the
confidence, learn how to kayak paddle (or
take your skills to the next level) at the
Outdoor Recreational Program’s kayak
skills class. In the comfort and safety of
an indoor pool, you learn basic paddling,
self-rescue techniques and buddy rescue,
edging maneuvers, how to roll your
kayak and recover. A skills-building class
is held every third Tuesday of the month
at Kimbro Pool.
Once you feel comfortable with your
paddling techniques, you can join a
group trip on the Puget Sound with
Northwest Adventure Center staff. Check
out upcoming trips in the Adventures

Go fish!
If you love to fish, then JBLM has
what you’re looking for with many lakes
available for fishing. American Lake
offers up rainbow trout, rock bass and
yellow perch. Sequalitchew Lake at Lewis

occasional coho salmon. At Lewis Main,

Cat Lake, Fianders Lake and the many
marshes located in the training areas.
You must have a Washington state fishing license, which can be purchased at
either the Northwest Adventure Center,

Gas-powered boats are only allowed on
American Lake; boats on all other lakes
at JBLM must be electric-powered. Find

FOCUS resiliency tip
of the month
Preparing for the summer
transition
In May, Families start preparing for
school to end and summer to begin!
This can be exciting and stressful at the
same time. For parents, this may mean
changes in routines and schedules, Family vacation planning and looking for

ways to keep children busy.
Now is an ideal time to prepare for
these changes so that the entire Family
can adjust smoothly. At FOCUS, you can
work together to create a Family calendar
of summer activities and to problem
solve around barriers that might get in
the way. You can also learn tools to help
the whole Family communicate and manage feelings during the changing routines
and schedules. Families set goals for the
summer (and feel rewarded when they
achieve these goals!). FOCUS offers tools
that help strengthen communication,
manage feelings, solve problems and set
goals in ways that are fun and engaging
for everyone!
