Sonabank New sletter
On August 25th the four branches of the
former Prince George’s Federal Savings Bank
opened their doors as Sonabank. PGFSB
brought to Sona an excellent core deposit
base reflecting its tenure in the communities
it serves. The Board of PGFSB saw the merger as an opportunity to broaden the services
offered to its customers. Sonabank will
provide new products like Remote Deposit
Capture, ACH Payment/Payroll Processing,
Merchant Services, Analysis and Sweep
Accounts.
PGFSB was
headquartered in Upper
Marlboro, which was the County Seat of the
then rural, tobacco-growing communities of
Prince George’s County. As PGFSB grew to
four offices (all in MD), it increased its staff
from 3 people (doing all bookkeeping by
hand) to 21 employees. It evolved from a
Building Association into a Mutual Savings
Bank and finally into a Federal Stock Corporation. Interestingly enough, Upper Marlboro
has retained a small town feel, with a diner
and a barber shop and rural areas still intact.
“Prince George's County has experienced
tremendous growth over the past decade and
is rapidly becoming the epicenter for economic
development in the Washington metropolitan
region. We boast a Triple A Bond rating, a
highly skilled workforce, and a large supply of
undeveloped land. These attributes, along with
our proximity to the nation's capital, have made
Prince George's County the new destination
for developers, businesses and residents.”
says Gwen S. McCall, President and CEO
Prince George’s County Economic Development Corporation.
Nevada-based gaming giant MGM Resorts
International will build a luxury casino resort
on the banks of the Potomac River at National
Harbor in P.G. County. Expected to create
4,000 permanent jobs, it will open summer
2016. Another announcement this year, P.G.
was one of 24 recipients in the U.S. to receive
funding from the $107 million Youth Career
Connect Grant program, designed for high
schools to develop innovative programs to
prepare students for success in a highly competitive global workforce.
With the current
economic climate in Prince George’s County,
Sonabank’s preferred lending status with the
Small Business Administration will be a major
benefit to these local communities.

Deep Roots In the Community - Article by Laura Davimes
I had the recent pleasure of meeting the CEO of PGFSB, Robert
Clagett at the Brandywine Branch
which is now part of Sonabank.
The interior is elegant but warm.
I learned that Bob’s wife, Rhea
Prince George’s Federal Savings
Bank along with the editor of the
local paper and other businessmen.
The Building Association would
answer the call of the WagnerSteagall Housing Act, a piece of
New Deal legislation that reflected
President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s
recognition of adequate housing as
an important societal need.
If you spend any time in Prince
George’s County you will see the
Clagett family name on road signs
and some of the oldest farms in
existence in Maryland. Weston
was part of the initial tract of land
granted from the British governTobacco in Bloom “Nicotiana”
ment to the Clagetts in 1670.
Watercolor By Felicita Clagett
Eleven generations of Clagetts
have lived at Weston which in
designed the look of the branch
more recent decades has produced
from exterior to interior to reflect
many award winning thoroughthe tobacco-growing community’s
st
breds. All of this information was
transition into the 21 Century.
Tobacco baskets hang from the wall modestly withheld during my
meeting with Bob, so I had to renear Bob’s mother’s many watersearch historical records. I found a
color renderings of farm & equine
scenes. Bob spoke briefly about his family tree that included not just
land barons, farmers, lawyers, and
grandfather, Thomas Van Clagett
who founded the “Building Associ- judges, but distinguished combat
veterans, politicians, founders of
ation” which would later become
schools and libraries, and even a woman
knighted by the Queen of the Netherlands and
the first Episcopal Bishop consecrated in the
New World. That’s a lot of community
service. But the story goes on. Clagett Farm
in Upper Marlboro was bequeathed to the
Chesapeake Bay Foundation for the purpose
of protecting the bay and creating awareness.
Food is still sustainably farmed there and
given to the Capital Area Food Bank and
Mellwood Woman’s shelter. Sonabank is
proud to have Robert Clagett on our
Board of Directors.

Sona Picnic 2014
Sona staffers gather each year for fun in the sun at beautiful Marblehead Farm (home of Rod, Georgia & Devon).
This year’s activities included a live band, pony rides, a magic show, inflatable water slide and trampoline. Our
BBQ was managed by Chef Joey and included Marblehead Farm sausage, hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken
with tons of side dishes and desserts. Thanks to everyone who brought something to share. Thanks especially to
the Porter Family for putting on this great event! Thanks to our photographers Joyce Harding & Sarah Padden.
Great day for a pool party!

Recently, Rod Porter joined in the ribbon cutting
ceremony for a New Hampton Inn and Suites of
Baltimore at Woodlawn. Sonabank provided the
construction financing. Located off I-695, the hotel
opened in April and is only 12 miles from the
