2009 Annual Report
2008-2009 Annual Report
“What we do in life echoes in eternity.”
Loren Price,
LACHSA student
Los Angeles County High School for the Arts Foundation
a message from the President
The Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (Arts High) Foundation extends its most sincere thanks to
the many individuals, foundations and corporations who, through their generous contributions, enabled
570 talented young artists to take great strides forward in their quest to achieve their dreams.
By providing the resources for the school (also known as LACHSA and Arts High) to sustain its awardwinning arts programs—tuition-free—these donors enabled students to explore every aspect of their arts
discipline, develop their talents and skills to their highest levels and artistically express themselves—to the
delight of the public—on stage, in art exhibitions and in the film festival.
Specifically, donor gifts:
• Underwrote studio classes in which the aesthetics, skills and techniques of the arts were taught by
distinguished professional artists
the arts high where students thrive...
• Supported the productions of plays, musicals, an opera, dance and music concerts and recitals, a ballet,
art exhibitions and a film festival
• Supplied students with art-making materials and equipment
• Brought prominent visiting artists from each discipline to teach Master Classes
• Enabled students to visit galleries, museums, film and animation studios and professional dance performances
• Made possible the awarding of 29 merit scholarships totaling $46,267
Toward its goal of expanding its base of donors, an Arts High Foundation Guild was founded in
September 2008. It hosted a holiday friend-raising event at the elegant home of Michael and Margo
Leonetti O’Connell, the daughter of the Foundation’s co-founder, the late Caroline Ahmanson. In the
Spring, Board member Laifun Chung and her husband, Ted Kotcheff, hosted the Guild’s first fundraiser—
Come to the Cabaret—that featured the music of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller and performances by
LACHSA students and alumni. We are most grateful to these gracious hosts and to the many friends—
old and new—who attended and made the events such successes.
Another milestone was achieved in the Foundation’s history when an Honorary Trustee Society was
formally established in May 2009 at the California Club, hosted by Guild member Cara Esposito. Made up
of prominent artists, business and philanthropic leaders, the Society Trustees, chaired by Ted Kotcheff,
personally endorse the work of the Arts High Foundation in supporting the quality of the arts education
at Arts High and in advocating for arts education for all youth. This Annual Report proudly acknowledges
and thanks all of our donors and illustrates how their giving enhanced the arts education of Los Angeles’
most promising young artists and gave the Foundation the resources to continue its work on their
behalf. Enjoy!

Administration
The Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) has enjoyed a 24-year, unique public-private
partnership with the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts Foundation.
With the Foundation’s invaluable and ongoing support, LACOE has been able to develop and sustain
award-winning arts training programs in dance, theatre, music, musical theatre, visual arts, and film
at LACHSA. Proud to have again served up to 600 of the most talented young artists in the County,
LACHSA simply would not be what it is today without the nearly $8 million that the Foundation has
contributed since the school’s founding in 1985.
During this past 2008-2009 school year, the Foundation provided over $730,000 to sustain the school’s
arts programs, enhancing the education of every student, ensuring that top quality teaching artists
could be hired to implement comprehensive arts curriculums and making it possible for all students
to perform or exhibit their work throughout the year. On behalf of the Los Angeles County Board of
Education, the faculty and staff of LACHSA, and, most importantly, the students, I both thank and
congratulate the Arts High Foundation for a job well done!

a message from the Principal
It is my pleasure to share how much I appreciate the Arts High Foundation for its encouragement and
support during my first year as principal of this remarkable school. In addition to being supportive of
me personally, I wish to thank them for, despite this being a very challenging financial environment,
bridging the gap between State funding and the
actual costs of running the school’s arts programs.
In addition to making quality arts education
available for LACHSA’s students, the Foundation
funded the school’s extensive Outreach Program
that brought thousands of underserved youth to
our performances, hosted an elegant friend-raising
event in December, helped underwrite teacher appreciation events, offered hospitality for parent
meetings and hosted the Senior Awards Reception where it presented $46,267 in scholarships. And,
those are just of few of the extra special things that the Foundation provided.
I strongly believe that the unique and historic public/private partnership between LACHSA and the
Arts High Foundation is essential for the school’s continued and unparalleled success. I look forward
to doing everything possible to nurture and strengthen this relationship for our students and for
Los Angeles County. I believe, that like me, you will be very impressed with what this outstanding
organization has achieved as you review this Annual Report. My hat is off to them!

a message from the
Executive Director
“A dream
you dream
alone is only
a dream.
A dream
you dream
together is
reality.” John Lennon
Like many others involved in the struggle to keep arts education in the schools, I was thrilled when
First Lady Michelle Obama recently said:
“My husband and I believe strongly that arts education is essential for building innovative
thinkers who will be our nation’s leaders for tomorrow. It’s our hope that we can all work
together to expose, enrich and empower Americans of all ages through the arts.”
Echoing that idea here in Los Angeles, the Arts High Foundation has been most fortunate to meet and
work together with numerous individual (current/former parents and citizens of Los Angeles), corporate and
foundation donors, the new Arts High Foundation Guild, the new Honorary Trustee Society and a dedicated
Board of Trustees Directors, all of whom also have a strong commitment to arts education. Through donors’
generous gifts, proudly acknowledged on pages 22 to 24, the 570 nascent artists at LACHSA were able to
come to the campus each day and take a broad spectrum of arts classes taught by outstanding professional
artists—tuition-free. Through those classes and numerous performing and exhibition opportunities, the
students were carefully guided through a comprehensive curriculum in each arts area. Nurtured and
inspired by their teaching artists and the many special learning experiences donors have made possible for
them, the students at LACHSA developed their talents, stretched their imagination, discovered new ways
to express themselves and, as seniors, earned admission to the nation’s finest colleges and conservatories
(95%) or prepared to launch their careers immediately (5%). Further, donors enabled LACHSA to continue to
reach out to thousands of underserved middle school youth and give them the opportunity to see LACHSA
performances and learn about how they can access the education the school offers.
The 2008-2009 Annual Report illustrates how our valued donor gifts were used in each arts area and how
the resulting high quality arts education helped students win awards and scholarships for outstanding
merit and acceptances into the colleges of their choice. Woven through these pages is a profound sense
of gratitude from the Arts High Foundation for how the Los Angeles community has so warmly embraced
our mission, supported our work and enabled us to sustain quality arts education at LACHSA.

The Arts High Foundation Guild
In September 2008 a small group of dedicated supporters met at the home of William Weinberger
to consider how they could assist the Foundation in broadening its base of support. Through their
leadership and enthusiasm the Arts High Foundation Guild was formed that evening. They began by
hosting a holiday event at their Hancock Park home of LACHSA Founder Caroline Leonetti Ahmanson’s
daughter, Margo Leonetti O’Connell and her husband Michael on December 12, 2008. Featuring
performances by all arts disciplines and visual artists busily sketching portraits of the guests, the event
introduced over 100 people to LACHSA and the Foundation.
In May 2009, Guild members Laifun Chung and her husband Ted Kotcheff hosted the Guild’s first
fundraiser—Come to the Cabaret!—in their beautiful Beverly Hills home. With Jerry Leiber in
attendance, the music of the Leiber/Stoller songwriting duo of Smoky Joe’s Café fame provided much
of the entertainment—with their songs performed by Vocal Jazz/Gospel Choir directed by Pat Bass,
LACHSA soloist Michael Mayo, alumna Samantha Sidley and pianist Jeff Lass. Alumni Thomas Kotcheff
thrilled the guests with new compositions for piano and cello (played by alumni Hilary Smith) from his
studies at the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University. Robert Lee, the 12-year old Program
Officer of the California Foundation for Stronger Communities made a surprise gift in honor of Ted
Kotcheff. These events raised a total of $65,000 for the Arts High Foundation.
