Working in a room just big enough for two drafting tables, we learned what it means to start a small business from the ground up. From those humble beginnings, we moved into a spacious 400 square foot building across from the County Court House on Main Street in Prince Frederick. With prosperous economic times, Main Street exposure and the benefit of a developing good reputation, we soon outgrew that locaTion and, in 1998, renovated and moved into a small bungalow at 81 Armory Road. While there, Patuxent Architects, Inc. grew to include four more employees and we designed, constructed and moved into our current location at 75 Armory Road. During our growth, Patuxent Architects, Inc. has had the pleasure and privilege of working with many local professionals, businesses, developers and land owners throught the Calvert, Charles, St. Mary’s, Anne Arundel and Prince George’s county region. We realize the importance of building productive relationships with local businesses and private citizens as well, for these relationships are what a strong, healthy business is founded on. We are a licensed professional architecture firm specializing in design and construction management services for a wide variety of clients including military, industrial, commercial, public, religious, historic preservation and private residential projects. Our services have varied from just a few hours of consulting time to complete designs for projects with large construction costs. Not only are we experts in design and construction management, but we are experienced in feasibility studies, building and zon- ing code review and compliance, life safety evaluation, coordinationa and organization of professional consulting engineers, cost analysis and project management. We are also experienced in coordinating and integrating civil, structural, mechanical and architectural elements to provide a complete engineering and architectural package. Patuxent Architects, Inc. uses the latest in BIM (Building Informatin Modeling) technology to communicate ideas and information from the preliminary design phase through the construction document phase and fruition of a project. Our firm places great importance on conserving the earth’s resources and environment. We staff a LEED AP and continue our education in this area to provide greener, healthier facilities. NARRATIVE APPROACH Patuxent Architects, Inc., a well-established Prince Frederick firm, assures your building committee that a professional can, and will, respond quickly to any construction emergency or problem that requires immediate attention. During the course of the project Patuxent Architect principals will be available and will attend all crucial meetings and participate in major design decisions. For day-to-day operations our Architect will be in constant contact with the Building Committee. Patuxent Architects, Inc. has the capabilities of providing high performance design to whatever level is desired. We staff a LEED Accredited Professional and is a member of the United State Green Building Council. Our architects and engineers are dedicated to providing state of the art energy conservation designs. Many energy efficient design measures can be done at little or no additional first cost with significant life cycle cost paybacks. You can be assured that Patuxent Architects, Inc. will be aggressive in terms of energy conservation in its design. Energy Efficient Goals and Recommendations Our commitment to energy efficiency can be measured through our four Energy Efficient Engineering and Design Goals: Analyze the buildings for Energy Efficiency Analyze the building for Deferred Maintenance issues Perform a condition assessment including a review of electrical, mechanical, plumbing systems, as well as the building envelopes Improve Energy Efficiency of all facilities Our recommendations from our Engineering and design Goals typically include: Wholesale upgrade of all or partial Mechanical Systems Replacement of all or partial Lighting Systems Upgrade of Electrical Systems Installation of a Building Management System Upgrade of Energy-critical building components including roof, windows and doors By implementing sustainable design and energy conservation solutions, Patuxent Architects, Inc. can: Save the client money by reducing both energy costs and the building’s impact on the site’s infrastructure Promote healthy, effective and productive learning and work environments “Sustainable development is the challenge of meeting growing human needs for natural resources, industrial products, energy, food, transportation, shelter and effective water management while conserving and protecting environmental quality and the natural resource base essential for future life and development. This concept recognizes that meeting long-term human needs will be impossible unless we also conserve the earth’s natural, physical, chemical and biological systems.” Definition of Sustainable Development -From the Civil Engineering Research Foundation, Washington, DC Key Components of Patuxent Architects, Inc.’s Sustainable Building Design Site Selection, Site Planning, and Landscape Design Develop the site in an environmentally sensitive manner Maximize existing natural site conditions Design site for easy pedestrian, bicycle, and mass transit access Minimize hardscape Minimize heat island effects Minimize light pollution Natural Lighting - Daylighting Maximize natural interior lighting and views as much as possible Orient buildings to maximize southern exposure and minimize east-west walls Utilize lighting controls to minimize energy costs Energy Efficient Building Shell Design the building shell to address radiant energy and conductive heat gains and losses Select glazing to optimize energy efficiency Provide window treatments to maximize winter solar gain and minimize summer solar gain Renewable Energy Consider various renewable energy alternatives to reduce grid energy costs Energy Efficient Lighting and Electrical Systems Employ lighting systems with energy efficient fixtures that are compatible with the chosen day lighting strategy Use occupancy sensors as much as possible Use Energy Star rated equipment and high efficiency transformers Utilize building-wide controls of lighting, mechanical and electrical systems with an energy management system We love Mother Earth and want to help preserve it. As professionals in the design and building industry, we have a tremendous responsiblity to that creed, and therefore we always strive to influence our clients to utilize as many techniques as possbile to reduce dependency on valuable fuel and material resources, some irreplaceable. Energy Efficient HVAC and R Systems Employ energy efficient HVAC and R systems Employ energy recovery systems Allow for individual occupant control of systems wherever possible Environmentally Sensitive Products and Systems Specify products made of recycled materials Specify locally harvested and manufactured materials Control waste diverted to landfills Reuse materials wherever possible Use materials with low ozone depletion potential and low greenhouse effects Specify rapidly renewal materials whenever possible Indoor Air Quality Use low or no VOC containing materials Incorporate ASHRAE standards and better them when possible Use natural ventilation where possible During construction, employ various strategies to insure adequate indoor air quality Monitor air quality during construction and after occupancy Flush building with fresh air prior to occupancy Water Conservation Utilize low flow and water conserving fixtures Irrigate as little as possible Consider greywater reuse for irrigation and/or waste transport Recycling Sytems and Waste Management Require contractors to recycle waste materials during construction Provide recycling stations for occupants Utilize pre- and post-consumer recycled materials whenever possible Commissioning Develop and implement an effective commissioning process that includes commissioning of a least the lighting controls, HVAC and R systems, domestic hot water and renewable energy systems Encourage enhanced building-wide commissioning Building Information Modeling A Building Information Model is a digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a facility. As such, it serves as a shared knowledge resource for information about a facility forming a reliable basis for decisions during its life-cycle from inception onward. Building Information Modeling (BIM) is an approach to building design, construction and management. It supports the continuous and immediate availability of project design scope, schedule and cost information that is high quality, reliable, integrated and fully coordinated. Patuxent Architects, Inc. is highly focused on ways in which new technologies can help us to develop our architecture. The BIM method represents a whole new way to communicate; a method in which data is efficiently provided to everyone working with the same model. BIM is an effective and 3D-oriented means of electronic communication which secures better communication between the stakeholders in a project, and reduces the risk of construction errors. The result is increased quality in both the design and the finished construction.
