Young Democrats Plan for Summer Activities, Seeking Volunteers On Wednesday, May 18, the Young Democrats of Frederick had a very productive and successful meeting. We had a wonderful discussion about outreach and about the direction and purpose of our group. Before I get into that though, I want everyone to know about a few upcoming opportunities and would like to know if anyone is interested. There are three volunteer opportunities coming up: Wednesday, June 29, 11:30 - 2:00 and Friday, July 1, 11:45 - 2:00 - serve lunch and help in the kitchen as a cafeteria aide at the Rescue Mission. The Rescue Mission helps to meet the needs of the homeless, needy, and chemical dependent citizens of our area. Volunteers will work in a group of 10 to set up, serve lunch, and clean up the cafeteria and kitchen. Thursday, June 16, 5:00-7:00 Frederick County 4-H Therapeutic Riding provides therapy through horseback riding for children and adults with special needs. A group of volunteers is needed to come help Pin the Tag on the Tack, i.e., help to tag saddles, tack, bridles, and everything else equestrian for a tag sale they will be having next March. Two individuals would need to be able to lift 30 pounds and would be helping to bring all of the equestrian materials out from storage, and then the other three volunteers would be helping to tag the items with the appropriate price (prices will be decided by the 4-H project leader). All proceeds from the tag sale go to benefit 4-H Therapeutic Riding. Monday, June 13, 6:00 - 7:30 volunteers are needed to help the setup of bingo, calling the numbers, ensuring the residents at Montevue have a great time during Bingo night. Also, we are going to hold a fundraiser at a local bowling alley. It is our hope to be able to pay for a new website by the end 2 If you have any interest in any of these things, please email Melissa Joseph, [email protected], or Ryan Trout, [email protected], to be included in future updates. 2011 Jefferson-Jackson Day Dinner At our meeting we also discussed the successful Woodsboro Town election, where Young Democrats knocked doors for a write-in candidate, and he won! We are looking for assistance with the building of a website, re-branding of the Young Democrats, and the formation of a web presence through YouTube and Facebook. Any people with these skills or ideas are welcomed. We would also like to have a monthly Internet video show. The Young Democrats are also going to begin outreach to schools, churches and businesses. Anybody with connections at church, the Chamber of Commerce, minority organizations, farm groups, and local high schools and colleges, please assist with our outreach. Melissa Joseph is the Outreach Committee chairperson, and would love to have your help on the committee. Finally, if you have interest in getting to speak one-on-one with your local elected officials, please contact me about our mentorship program. The Young Democrats Mentorship Program will pair an elected official, or previously elected official, with a young person to meet every few weeks over coffee or lunch to discuss politics, business, or just life.
