Three Youth Features!
NORTH CAROLINA DEMOCRATS AT THE WHITE HOUSE!
Darlene Whitted, Corresponding Secretary of the Wake County Democratic Women, was
invited to a Christmas Party at the White House on December 5th. She took her mother, Alexzine
Whitted, as her guest.
Thanks to Darlene and Alexzine for sharing some of their pictures with us!
Ingrid Nurse of Cabarrus County was also a guest at the White House in early December.
Ingrid was an Official Delegate to the 2012 Democratic National Convention.
Katie Gammon of Greensboro and Anderson Miller of Asheville look glamorous in this
picture made at the White House last week. Katie previously worked at the NCDP Headquarters
in Raleigh.
Andy is the Legislative Assistant for State Representative Joe Sam Queen in Raleigh.
FORSYTH SENIOR DEMOCRATS “PASS THE TORCH”
At the December meeting of the Forsyth Senior Democrats, President Jim Shaw passed
the torch of leadership to incoming President Fred Terry. Jim Shaw has been President since
2013. Under his leadership the Forsyth club has been one of the most active Senior Democrats
Clubs in the entire state.

NEW DEMOCRATIC MAYOR IN KNIGHTDALE!
On December 7
th
James Roberson was sworn in as the new Mayor of Knightdale. State
Senator Dan Blue administered the Oath of Office as Mrs. Roberson held the Bible.
Representative Darren Jackson and Wake County Commission Chair James West
participated in the ceremony. Information for this article came from Deans Eatman who says:
“Knightdale is lucky to have a progressive, forward-thinking Mayor and Town Council.”
JUNE ATKINSON FILES FOR RE-ELECTION!
Our popular Democratic Superintendent of Public Schools June Atkinson is shown in
the picture above after she filed for re-election. This energetic lady travels across the state
frequently to promote better education. (This writer remembers once when June spoke in
Southport one night and then spoke in Asheville the next afternoon. She traveled between the two
locations by car.)
On Saturday, December 5th, June drove to the Outer Banks to participate in a Democratic
Rally in Dare County. June really cares about North Carolina’s children!
GUILFORD COUNTY DEMOCRATIC WOMEN HOLIDAY PARTY!
More than 175 Democrats packed into the elegant home of Mayor Nancy Vaughn and former
State Senator Don Vaughn for the Guilford Democratic Women’s Christmas Party on December 5 th.
Don is with Santa Claus in the picture above. He was named Guilford County’s “2015
Democrat of the Year.” Former State Senator Katie Dorsett and Senator Gladys Robinson are on
the right above.

RONALD NEWTON FILES FOR LT. GOVERNOR!
Durham attorney and businessman Ronald Newton has filed for Lt. Governor. This Democrat
has been Owner and CEO of State of the Art Financial Services since 1994. He holds Bachelor of
Arts Degrees in both Political Science and Criminal Justice. He earned his Bachelor of Laws
degree from the School of Law at NC Central University. Since 2012 he has also been a Taxation
Instructor at Durham Technical Community College.
Joining Ronald in the picture above are his wife, Deborah Scarborough Newton, and their
sons, Nicholas Scarborough and Terrence Scarborough. They also have a daughter, Kelli Jean
Pierre.
Ronald was responsible for negotiating two Collective Bargaining Agreements with Duke
University in 1986 and 1989 for support service workers of the American Federation of State,
County, and Municipal Employees Union, an organization of which he remains a life member.

HAYWOOD COUNTY DEMOCRATS WELCOME ROY COOPER!
Attorney General Roy Cooper hosted a fundraising event at the Wells Events and Reception
Center in Waynesville on December 4th. A standing room only crowd of more than 100 people
packed into the room.
Three strong Democratic legislative candidates happily joined Roy for this picture which
was labeled “General Assembly Team.” From the left they are Rhonda Schandevel who is
challenging a GOP incumbent in NC House District 118, our Attorney General, Jane Hipps who is
running against a GOP incumbent in Senate District 50, and State Representative Joe Sam Queen
who is running for re-election in NC House District 119.
Mr. Cooper’s speech was frequently interrupted by applause. Haywood County Democratic
Party Second Vice Chair Dustin Mull said: “We are working very hard here in the mountains to
ensure that we elect Democrats in 2016!”
ERV PORTMAN FILES FOR COUNTY COMMISSIONER!
Wake County Democrats Erv and Susan Portman spent Thanksgiving weekend in New York
with members of their family. They are at the Security Council of the United Nations in the picture
above. Erv and Susan are second and third from the right. They also attended Macy’s
Thanksgiving Day Parade and saw many other New York sights.
Erv and Susan spent several days during the first week of December in San Francisco
where they visited with more relatives. They are second and third from the left in this picture as
they toured San Francisco on segways.
Between the trips Erv filed for Wake County Commissioner on December 1 st. He and Susan
are excited about the upcoming campaign. He has already had experience in that body when he
was appointed to fill out the term for a vacant County Commissioner seat.
Erv was a popular member of the Cary City Council for many years.
NC DEMOCRATS WELCOME PRESIDENT CLINTON TO THE TRIANGLE!
A large crowd of North Carolina Democrats turned out to greet President Bill Clinton at his
fundraiser for Mrs. Hillary Clinton on December 7th.
Strong Democrat Hampton Dellinger of Durham and his son, Jackson Dellinger, are enjoying
talking with Mr. Clinton in the picture above.
State Senator Floyd McKissick joined President Clinton for this happy picture.
CAROLINE SUMPTER INAUGURATED IN RED SPRINGS!
Caroline Sumpter became a friend of many North Carolina Democrats when she was an
Official Delegate to the 2012 Democratic National Convention in Charlotte. Caroline has continued
her Democratic successes.
She ran for her first public office this year and she was the top vote getter in the election
for the Red Springs Town Council. Caroline’s family proudly stood with her as she received the
Oath of Office from Judge John Carter. After being sworn in, Carolina was elected Mayor Pro Tem.
MAYOR JOHN MCNEILL AND HIS TRUSTED ADVISORS!
What a lineup! Red Springs Mayor John McNeill was joined by his four grandchildren at the
December meeting of the Red Springs Town Council.
From the left they are: Anderson McNeill, Meredith McNeill, Silas Proctor, and Ayden
Proctor. The Bible talks about wisdom “from the mouths of babes.”
In April John completed four highly successful years as Chair of the Robeson County Party.
RECEPTION HONORING MATT CALABRIA!
Wake County Commissioner Matt Calabria was honored at a reception at the Raleigh home
of Gerta Stein on December 7th. Gerta presented an elaborate array of food for her guests.
In the picture above, Matt is talking with Virginia Carson and Betsy Carson. Michael
Easley, Jr. is in the back part of the picture.
Matt spoke to the guests about the feeling of joy he is getting from solving some of Wake
County’s problems. An example: He and Wake’s six other Democratic County Commissioners have
paved the way to bring clean water to a minority neighborhood in eastern Wake County which has
had contaminated water for generations.
County Commissioner Sig Hutchinson, Nancy Jane Hutchinson, and Molly Calabria

STAGE A HAPPY CHRISTMAS PARTY!
On December 10
th
lots of Person County Democrats gathered at the Homestead Steak
House in Roxboro for the Christmas Party of the Democratic Women of Person County. One
attendee said: “Amidst the raucous awarding of door prizes, Christmas carols, and great food,
we welcomed old and new Democratic friends.”
From the left in the picture above are Person County native Pete Glidewell who is running
a strong campaign for US Congress in the Sixth Congressional District, State Senator Mike
Woodard, retired State Representative Winkie Wilkins, DW President Vicki Shull, Register of Deeds
candidate Mary Deitz, and County Commissioner Jimmy Clayton.

The best Door Prize of the night: Jack Pleasant donated a mask of Donald Trump and some
buffalo jerky. His Door Prize was entitled: “A Jerk and Some Jerky!”

JUDGE LINDA STEPHENS FILES FOR RE-ELECTION!
Judge Linda Stephens of Raleigh filed for re-election to the North Carolina Court of
Appeals last week. In 2008 she was elected by a victory margin of more than 500,000 votes.
In 2016 all statewide judicial candidates will run with their party label on the ballot.
Of course, Judge Stephens will run as a Democrat. Her web site is www.JudgeLindaStephens.org.
BEAUFORT COUNTY DEMOCRATS ARE ON THE MOVE!
County Chair Kathy Gaynor and the Democrats of Beaufort County are making a big move
to a new headquarters in Washington. Last Saturday they moved several pieces of furniture and
proudly erected Democratic signs. They are energized for a supercharged 2016 campaign.
The window sign proclaims a great slogan: “Caring On The Pamlico!”

JACOB VERDEJO IS READY FOR THE HOLIDAYS!
This is the first Christmas that Jacob Verdejo of Raleigh will be old enough to enjoy the
lights, the music, and the happiness of Christmas!
When his parents, Democratic leaders John Verdejo and Aolani Donegan, took him to get
portraits made, he quickly fell in love with the truck above. He pushed the truck all over the store!
Jacob currently likes everything with wheels, wrestling, bouncy balls, and the Disney
Channel.
GRADUATION FOR TWO OF OUR COLLEGE DEMOCRATIC STARS!
Two College Democrats who have starred in the YOUTH FEATURE of this newsletter
graduated this month.
Deagan Williams is shown above as he graduated from Campbell University. His parents,
Tammy and Ceylon Williams, proudly joined Deagan in this celebratory picture.
In addition to his academic achievements, Deagan has founded his patriotic “Made In
America” company which only markets products made by American workers in American plants.
Claudia Shoemaker graduated from Appalachian State University this month. She has
devoted a lot of time and talent to Democratic crusades while she has been in college.
