Welcome to Fiesta del Sol 2014
Why Fiesta del Sol for Your Company?
Fiesta del Sol provides an ideal, direct marketing opportunity as it attracts over one million visitors each year. Fiesta del Sol’s
increasing diversity and popularity make it an ideal vehicle for exposing or reinforcing your brand.
As the migrant community flourished on Chicago’s south side, young Latinos sought to self identify in a multitude of diverse
cultures. This was never more prevalent in the heart of the working class migrant community of Pilsen. The fight to create
a safe learning environment for a growing community of youth began in 1974 – a block party known today as Fiesta del
Sol. The first Fiesta del Sol gathered more than 2,000 attendees from across the Midwest to raise funds to establish the first
community high school and after 41 years has over 1.3 million visitors from across the country.
We invite you to join us in celebrating this venue as an opportunity to reach a diverse population of Latinos on July 31 – August
3, 2014. Your generosity makes it possible for us to provide visitors with the best in educational resources, scholarships, arts,
entertainment and more. We look forward to creating options to expand your scope of interest within the Latino community
as we celebrate our 42nd Annual Fiesta del Sol.
Additionally, 2014 is a special year for Pilsen Neighbors Community Council (PNCC), as we will be celebrating its 60th
anniversary. Celebrate with us, a legacy of community organizing and leadership development in the community. As a partner
of Fiesta del Sol, your support is essential in making a difference in people’s lives.
Respectfully,
Juan F. Soto

Who We Are
Long time PNCC board member, Carmen Velasquez breaks ground by founding Alivio Medical Center to offer affordable and accessible healthcare, and
continues to be an active presence in the community.
Pilsen Neighbors Community Council (PNCC) will be celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2014! For 40 years, PNCC and Fiesta del Sol have
been working with, “Ordinary People doing Extraordinary Things.”
In 1994, PNCC wins an agreement from the City of Chicago to replace dangerous vaulted sidewalks in Pilsen.
PNCC is a non-profit, community-based organization (1954) whose mission is to work to establish policies and practices in the Pilsen and
Southwest areas of Chicago around the needs of the community. PNCC invests in the development of new community leaders through
leadership training to bring about civic engagement and action.
PNCC works on issues such as economic development, education funding, universal healthcare, older adult social well being and workforce
development. PNCC has been historically instrumental in organizing parents to upgrade school buildings as well as to build new schools
to end overcrowding. PNCC currently leads parent leadership trainings in Pilsen and the Midway area, is now organizing the 7th Pilsen
Education summit, and its organizing work in Early Childhood Education is going strong.
Also in 1994, PNCC creates Proyecto Vivienda which organized residents to identify city owned vacant lots and under Mayor Daley’s, “New Homes
for Chicago” program, PNCC builds the first affordable home in Pilsen. This model of community-directed development caught the interest of then
Governor Bill Clinton during his exploratory campaign for President. The young and proud new homeowners hosted PNCC leadership in this historic
meeting. Under Proyecto Vivienda, PNCC built six homes - one of them the PNCC office.
In a strategy to decrease the number of taverns in Pilsen, PNCC organized to close troublesome and rowdy establishments. The City of Chicago began by
closing and revoking liquor licenses without the right to renew. A moratorium on any new liquor licenses in Pilsen was also enforced.
The Fiesta del Sol Guadalupe A. Reyes Scholarship Program was created in 1996 to address the financial need of college-bound Latinos in the Southwest
Side. To this date, over $800,000 has been awarded to over 500 students. In 2005, the Guadalupe A. Reyes Scholarship Program broke a record and
awarded 56 scholarships.
PNCC is part of an international organization, the Gamaliel Network, a grassroots network of non-partisan, faith-based organizations in
17 U.S. states, South Africa and the United Kingdom that organizes to empower ordinary people to effectively participate in the political,
environmental, social and economic decisions affecting their lives.
Mayor Daley appoints PNCC Board member, Teresa Fraga to the City Colleges of Chicago Board of Trustees. Fraga’s work within the City of Colleges
Chicago in 1995, resulted in the long-awaited Arturo Velasquez West Side Technical Institute.
The 60 year legacy continues…
Fiesta del Sol outgrew Blue Island Avenue (its original site) and moved to Cermak Road.
1950’s - PNCC is incorporated in 1954.
2000’s - PNCC’s work expands into metro Chicago.
1960’s – PNCC’s focus becomes community organizing on the issue of garbage pick-up and rodent control.
PNCC launches the Gamaliel of Metro Chicago Immigration Legal Clinic
1970’s - PNCC leaders began organizing with a community vision to build a much needed high school in Pilsen.
The Pilsen Paseo becomes a vision soon to become reality.
In 1972, organizing began for a new High School, and after a year of hard work, leaders organized a block party which is now Fiesta del Sol. Finally, in
September 16, 1977 Benito Juarez Community Academy was officially inaugurated.
Fiesta del Sol continues to grow along with its community.
PNCC fought to stop the Chicago 21 Plan, which would have displaced many families East of Ashland. In 1976, PNCC and the City of Chicago came to
an agreement and an alternate plan was embraced for Pilsen.
PNCC led a strong and effective organizing effort by demanding a moratorium that resulted in removing 18th Street from the proposed Pilsen TIF.
2010’s - Fiesta del Sol turns 40 years and reaches a mile long! PNCC expands its work evolving into Gamaliel of Metro Chicago and Gamaliel of Illinois.
PNCC continues its work on immigration and in 2013 launched the nation-wide campaign a “Dream for All”.
PNCC’s rehab housing project, a first of its kind to address the issue of abandoned buildings in Pilsen was launched and became its own organization –
which is now Eighteenth Street Development Corporation.
1980’s - PNCC led organizing efforts against redlining by Pilsen banks, and agreements were reached to give mortgages to families living East of Ashland,
including advertising in Spanish for the new Hispanic market.
After two fires claimed the lives of 17 Pilsen residents, PNCC organized to demand that the Chicago Fire Department hire Latino and Spanish speaking
fire fighters. PNCC won an agreement with the city and 40 Latino firemen joined the ranks that year.
1990’s - PNCC and community leaders organized to make Fiesta del Sol an alcohol and tobacco sponsorship free event, attracting even more visitors
and being recognized as a family-friendly event.

The Señorita Fiesta del Sol amplifies the beauty of contestants, but more importantly—contestants are leaders that represent
different communities. The winner is active with PNCC throughout the year, and she encourages other young leaders to
become active and involved. Contestants learn about their culture, roots, and heritage, and use this opportunity to create
positive changes in their community. The Señorita Fiesta del Sol promotes self-esteem, and enriches the lives of all its
contestants.
Señorita Fiesta del Sol takes place in June 2014, two months before Fiesta del Sol. A winner is crowned, Señorita Fiesta del

she devoted her life to improving the plight of children, seniors, and the disabled. After one of her eleven children suffered
severe disabilities caused by spinal meningitis in the 1950s, she began a 50-year campaign addressing the needs of people
with disabilities. In 1969, she established a school for children with developmental disabilities called Esperanza School –
“esperanza” meaning “hope” in Spanish. In 1973, she founded El Valor, which means “courage.”
