Community Emergency Response Training (CERT).
Are YOU prepared?
What if:
• Tornadoes swept through Tremont and fire/EMS couldn’t reach you?
• Flash flooding isolated you and kept emergency responders from
•
•
helping you?
Terrorist activities knocked out communications towers and the
power grid?
Any type of disaster overwhelmed the emergency system and left
your family without immediate help?
Could you handle the situation? Would you know how to protect your
family or your home? How to help your neighbors? Provide emergency
first aid?
Not many can answer the questions posed above. So the Cleveland City
Department of Homeland Security Office is offering Community
Emergency Response Training (CERT) instruction to Tremont’s residents
for the first time.
The CERT program is part of a national Department of Homeland
Security initiative to better prepare ordinary American citizens for the
hazards and disasters that could threaten their communities. It was
initially developed to assist communities in taking care of themselves
when first responders are overwhelmed or unable to respond due to
transportation or communication difficulties.
To understand how necessary and vital such emergency preparedness is
today, you only have to imagine what could have been in post-Katrina
New Orleans had such training been in place…and then contrasting that
image with the sobering reality of what really transpired in the aftermath
of that storm.
An excellent opportunity—free to Cleveland residents—to become better
trained to handle an emergency situation, this class is being offered in
Tremont. Certification will take 20 hours, broken into 4—4 hour class
modules and one final disaster drill.
Classes will meet from 6-10pm on the following four Mondays: 6/16,
6/23, 7/7 & 7/14, with dinner provided each evening. Disaster
drill/graduation will be planned after the coursework has been
completed. Participants will be trained in the following:
•
•
•
•
•
•
Disaster preparedness & psychology
Fire safety
Emergency medical operations
Search & rescue operations
CERT organizations
Terrorism & CERT
All participants will also receive a ‘disaster-pack,’ a kit filled with tools,
manual, hardhat and reflective vest to be used in the event of an
emergency. The backpack is theirs to keep—funded by a DHS grant to the
City of Cleveland—with the sincerest hope that it will never, ever be
needed. Although the CERT course and emergency-preparedness
materials are free to Cleveland residents, space is limited and you must
pre-register to attend the class.
Please contact David Mehring,
TWDC Safety Committee Chair, for
more information and to reserve
your spot in Tremont’s first-ever
CERT class!

Executive Director’s Letter
June, 2008
Dear Friends in Tremont,
Over the past few weeks, I’ve had the opportunity to witness
some amazing volunteer efforts. The Friends of the Dog
Park organized a great spring cleaning for our four-legged
friends. The Tremont Gardeners hosted another successful
flower sale – raising money for ongoing beautification of
Lincoln Park. Volunteers from the TWDC Marketing Committee set a very high bar
in producing a first annual Art & Cocktails fundraiser. (Special thanks to our host,
Dana Depew of Asterisk * Gallery). And a handful of concerned Tremonters
coordinated with city officials to host some healthy discussion about
Fire Station #21.
Moreover, I should mention a couple of recent neighborhood cleanups: Willey
Avenue Cleanup (May 20), Metro North Block Club (May 17) and RiverSweep (May
10). This being my first experience with RiverSweep, I really didn’t know what to
expect. Suffice it to say, I was amazed. Volunteers scoured every edge of Tremont
from Scranton to West 3rd – from Clark Field to Lincoln Park and of course,
Holmden Hill. It’s an amazing combination of local resources, goodwill and goodold-fashioned / get-your-hands-dirty volunteerism.
But if, perchance, you were not able to take part in any of these springtime efforts –
there are still plenty of opportunities. There are always roles for volunteers with the
summer’s many events: Taste of Tremont, Arts in August, and the Tremont Arts &
Cultural Festival, just to name a few. And for those of you who are looking for
cleanups and beautification projects – you can find out more by checking with a
variety of neighborhood organizations: Tremont Gardeners or the Friends of Clark
Field, or your block club.
I look forward to seeing you all enjoying everything that Tremont has to offer all
season long.
All the best to you and yours,
Thanks to all of those who made our
May 3rd Cocktails & Art Fundraiser a success!

BLOCK CLUB HAPPENINGS

“Block Club Happenings” is compiled by TWDC staff with direct input from Block Club chairs.
Auburn
Holmden Buhrer Rowley/Mentor Castle Clark
The block club returned to Pilgrim Church following the advocacy of resident, Ric Torres, and
Pilgrim Church Associate Pastor, Rev. Tricia Gilbert. Our thanks to them! Special guests
included Commander Keith Sultzer of the Cleveland Police Second District, Marty Barnes of
the Tremont Safety Committee who sought volunteers to scout out light pole locations in
the block club area as part of a neighborhood-wide Light Poles Audit (thanks to Frank and
Sue Scialabba for volunteering!), and Lindsey Sacher of ESOP (Empowering and
Strengthening Ohio’s People) who shared information with residents about Foreclosure
Prevention and avoiding Predatory Lending. She encouraged residents facing foreclosure to
contact ESOP early enough in the process to get help in in renegotiating mortgages.
Residents received an update about Visible Voice Bookstore and the wine permit &
expansion of permit for the bookstore’s patio, and were encouraged to attend a public
meeting sponsored by Councilman Cimperman with the Department of Fire and Public
Safety to save Firehouse #21. Residents were encouraged to participate in the area-wide
Riversweep Clean-up and to make plans for the proposed July 26th Cookout and Clean-up.
The next meeting is Thursday, June 12th – 7:00 pm at Pilgrim Church.
The HBR and MCC Block Clubs welcomed several guests to the
meeting this month including Mike Norman from Cleveland Fire
Fighters Local 93 to speak about the “browning out” of Fire Station
#21. The block clubs wrote letters to numerous city officials in
support of Station #21. Mary Beth Holdford, Corporate
Responsibility Manager for ArcelorMittal USA, and Ralph Myers,
member of the company’s corporate response team, spoke to the
block club about the company and its role in the neighborhood.
They answered questions and provided a hotline number that can be
used to report complaints relating to ArcelorMittal USA. Jorge Zayas,
a new vendor at Clark Field, also visited the group. Jorge will be
selling yummy homemade foods every Sunday from 7:00am4:00pm in Clark Field. The block club made plans for their
community garden – the garden will be located on Holmden Hill.
The group has been working with Steps to A Healthier Cleveland and
Councilman Cimperman and will be building raised beds using
recycled bricks this summer. Members of the group participated in
RiverSweep to clean their area of the neighborhood. The next block
club meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 4th at 6:30pm at the
Clark Bar. Community garden meeting to follow.
South of Jefferson
Members of the South of Jefferson Block Club signed a letter in support of Fire Station #21
and sent the letter to several city officials. Michael DeNicola presented an overview of the
Long Range Planning and Economic Development Committee to the block club. Michael
also presented information about CERT – Community Emergency Response Team –training
which will be available to Tremont residents in June. Marty Barnes, a member of the Safety
Committee, also gathered volunteers from the block club to inventory the street lights in the
South of Jefferson area of the neighborhood. Members of the block club learned about free
rain barrels that will be available through the Model Blocks program. Stay tuned for details
about an upcoming rain barrel workshop! The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, June
10th at 7:00pm at Post #58 at 2442 Professor Avenue.
Lincoln Heights
The Block Club main agenda was to discuss and develop ideas on the role of TWDC
Community Organizer Kristen Ciofani within the monthly block club meetings. The
consensus of the members present was to add an agenda item to each months meeting
titled (TWDC Report/Announcements). This action item will appear on the agenda’s after
the completion of any guest speakers that have been scheduled are concluded. Our Second
agenda item, discussion with Tom Cook, Co-Chair of the TWDC Economic Development/
Long Range Planning Committee has been rescheduled to our June meeting due to a
scheduling conflict. Membership was updated on several items of old business: With the
help of Robert Rodgers the non-compliant car repair facility on Branch Ave. has closed its
doors and moved to the joy of the residents that were negatively impacted. Outgoing
Co-Chair Henry Senyak went over the final Cooperation Agreement document that was
crafted with the City of Cleveland Law Department, the Block Club, and Mr. Mario Nemr
owner of the Matinee Cleveland. This document will be presented to the Board of Zoning
Appeals as the official request for conditions of use to gain Block Club and residential
support for the expansion of use and a nightclub variance. Outgoing Co-Chair Georgiann
Franko addressed the great community support at BOZA regarding the denial of a variance
request to re-establish Monroe’s Adult Cabaret located near the Metro North Block Club
service area. Special Thanks to Court Community Service, and Matt Martin for their
assistance and for a fine job removing 47 bags of trash from underneath the Starkweather
and Kenilworth overpasses on May 12. Next Meeting: Thursday, June 12th---12th----6:30p.m.
----6:30p.m. At Zion Church.

Old Tremont
Members of the Old Tremont Block Club again welcomed Commander Bill Likes from CMHA
Police to their May meeting to discuss security concerns in the Scranton Castle Building.
Commander Likes spoke to the members of the block club about their concerns. The block
club is looking forward to Cuyahoga County Board of Elections attending their June meeting
and to continuing their work in their garden over the next month. The group is beginning to
plan for the fall deadline for a Neighborhood Connections grant for a computer room. The
next block club meeting will be held on Thursday, June 26th at 6:30pm at Scranton Castle.
Duck Island
The first meeting of the spring/summer season was held in early May. Residents were
encouraged to participate in the area-wide Riversweep Clean-up as well as to make use of a
dumpster, provided by Ward 14 Councilman Joe Santiago, available to residents on May
17th and 18. Special guests at the May meeting included Commander Keith Sultzer of the
Second District Police who discussed safety concerns with residents, Scott Nagy of the
Tremont West Long Range Planning Committee who sought resident input, and Marty
Barnes of the Safety Committee who sought a block club volunteer to survey all Duck Island
light poles’ locations as part of a wider neighborhood Light Pole audit. Community
Organizer, Scott Rosenstein, worked cooperatively with residents on West 20th Street and
CPP to get street lights working on that street. Tremont West Executive Director, Chris
Garland, was also in attendance at the May meeting. Volunteers from Key Bank and Ward
14 Neighborhood Service Provider, Matt Martin, along with TWDC Community Organizer,
Kristen Ciofani, and Ward 14 Code Enforcement Officer, Robert Rodgers, will continue a
graffiti removal and clean-up project along Willey Avenue. The next block club meetings are
Tuesdays, June 3rd and July 1st— 6:00 pm at Abbey Playground. Please join us!
Central Tremont
The Central Tremont Block Club received a Neighborhood
Connections grant for beautification efforts along Jefferson Avenue
and community building in the Central Tremont area! A street clean
up will be held on June 7th at 10:00am and flower planting will be
held on June 14th at 10:00am. All are welcome! The block club
received a response from the Chief, Division of Fire, in regards to
their letters of support for Fire Station #21. The members discussed
their next steps as a block club to continue to support Station #21.
The block club also heard a presentation on CERT – Community
Emergency Response Team training sponsored by the City of
Cleveland and was updated on the progress of the street light survey
in their area of the neighborhood. Members of the block club also
learned about a community garden opportunity in the Central
Tremont area. The next meeting will be held on June 24th at 6:30pm
at the Jefferson Library.
Metro North
On the agenda of the late April meeting was a discussion of the
annual Spring Fling Neighborhood Clean-up Day scheduled for
mid-May. Residents and neighborhood youth join together for the
Clean-up with support from the community organizer and Ward 14
Neighborhood Service Provider, Matt Martin. A cookout followed the
Clean-up. Our thanks to all participants and to Councilman Joe
Santiago for providing a dumpster. At the meeting, residents
discussed safety and housing conditions in the neighborhood, and
received an update on the Monroe’s cabaret situation on West 25th
Street with the decision of the City’s Board of Zoning Appeals (BOZA)
to deny the variances requested by the owners. Some residents
attended the BOZA hearing in opposition to the variances, with one
neighbor expressing support. Following a late May meeting, the next
meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, June 24th 6 pm at MetroHealth
Medical Center.

North of Literary
At the May meeting, neighbors in the northern portion of Tremont
were to talk with John Egan of Cleveland Public Power

with SynDee Klingenberg & Wendy Thompson, co-owners of a
bakery, A Cookie and a Cupcake, who are seeking block club support
for a business proposed for 2173 Professor, #2 (former site of
Azure Stained Glass). Residents were to receive updates on: Court
Watch activities by resident, Deane Malaker; and Riversweep and
Industry Park Clean-ups (thank you to the number of NOL
residents who participated!). A representative of the 2nd District
Police was also invited. Don’t forget the the Show Your Stuff

"Global Action on ArcelorMittal"
Tremont resident Phil Pavarini, Jr.and Ohio Citizen Action Cleveland Program Director Liz Ilg traveled to Luxembourg to attend the annual
shareholders meeting of ArcelorMittal on May 12. Liz and Phil met up with neighbors of ArcelorMittal plants from around the world, including
the Czech Republic, South Africa, Kazakhstan, and groups working with neighbors in the Ukraine, Romania, and India.
The groups produced a joint report about ArcelorMittal's international environmental record, held a press conference, and met with an
ArcelorMittal board member. Liz and Phil attended the shareholders meeting itself and Liz was able to ask direct questions to Lakshmi and
Aditya Mittal about the company's environmental performance at the Cleveland plant and around the world.
Anyone interested in learning more about what happened at the meeting, or in reading the media coverage of the event, can visit
www.ohiocitizen.org.
The new international neighbors group will be called "Global Action on ArcelorMittal" and will be continuing to work together in the coming
months to clean up ArcelorMittals' steel plants around the world.
Ohio Citizen Action will be releasing a documentary on Mittal Steel and Cleveland at the Museum of Contemporary Art (8501 Carnegie Ave.)
on Friday, June 6th at 7 pm.

INSIDE TREMONT
Tremont West Development Board of Directors and Staff
Offers Thanks and Best Wishes
to Marcia Leslie
For her service on the Tremont West Board of Directors and her
service to the wider Tremont community. First elected to the Board
in 2005 and re-elected in 2007, Marcia served on the Executive
Director Search Committee and co-chaired the most recent
Nominating Committee. She also represented Tremont five times
before Neighborhood Connections grant review panels—with all five
grants awarded (Tremont Arts & Cultural Festival—2005, 2006,
2008; Holmden-Buhrer-Rowley’s Neighborhood Clean-up and
Beautification—2007, and Metro North’s Security Camera Initiative—
2008)! Marcia volunteered for the Arts and Cultural Festival,
Riversweep, and Auburn and Metro North Clean-ups for several
years—and staffed Tremont West tables at the Cleveland L/G/B/T
Pride Festival, the Tremont Arts & Cultural Festival, and Taste of
Tremont. She represented Tremont at resident leadership training
offered by Neighborhood Housing Services in Kansas City, Missouri,
and facilitated resident leadership training on diversity and on
homelessness through the Cleveland Leadership Summit.
Marcia has been a resident of Tremont since 2002, moving here
from Collinwood. After a number of years commuting to work, first
in Painesville and more recently in Chardon, the increasing price of
gasoline necessitates a move to Geauga or Lake county to be closer
to work. Marcia hopes to return often to visit and volunteer for
special events. We wish her well and look forward to her visits back!
