Fall is in the Air. . . Finally!
After a long hot summer, the new chill is energizing. And good for moms, we need a lot of
energy this time of year.
As school begins, we turn our energies to
keeping the kids healthy and busy. In this
edition, we offer some ways to Avoid Those
School/Daycare Sickness Blues, and a partial
listing of many of the Extracurricular Activities
available for our kids. Check out everything
from art to guitar lessons to tumbling to taekwondo.
Then it seems the kids are barely back in
school and fall and holiday activity is upon us!
Features in this edition include Fun Family
Activities as we move into fall, Top 5 Things To
Do This Fall, TriCityMom.com Calendar Highlights, and a great list of Halloween Activities
throughout the region.
Continuing the fall theme, we also offer some
healthy, safe, and fun treat alternatives for
your Halloween tricksters, Fall Fitness for You
and Your Family, and the latest Fall Fashion
Trends for You.
Last quarter, TriCityMom.com attempted to
address mom concerns about the recent trend
of Cyber Bullying. This quarter, we wanted to
pass along to you area resources when dealing with child abuse.
And on a lighter note, Holiday Events are
coming to a town near you! We have updated information on holiday events throughout the region!
As we approach fall, we at TriCityMom.com
want to say a big “thank you” to all area
moms for the support, enthusiasm, and encouragement you’ve shown us since we started
this website dedicated to you. October 6,
2010, will mark our one-year anniversary,
and as of this writing, we have over 3,200
registered moms on the site, and many others
who haven’t had the time to sign up yet! Our
pledge to you is to continue to do our best to
be your “one-stop” mom resource in the TriCities. Please let us know how we’re doing.

Summer is gone, but summer fun doesn’t necessarily
have to be! Sure, crisper temperatures are here, but
summer time activities here in the Tri-Cities don’t have
to stop. There is still a lot to do, and 60 degree weather
shouldn’t scare a mom away! Kids are up for anything, and their
energy is in need of a good release. What can you do?
Love to Swim? Freedom Hall in Johnson City has fall and winter themed swim sessions.
If you and your kids are missing dips in the water, see if you can take a few hours and get
your swimming fix one Saturday. If your kids want even more, you can check out swim
team lessons. Call 423-461-4872 for more information.
Animal Lovin’ Fun. Colder temperatures mean the zoos don’t have a huge selection
of favorites to look at. During the entire season of autumn, take the kids on a day trip to
Briarwood Ranch Safari Park in Bybee (Morristown), Tennessee. Open from 10 until 4,
Monday through Saturday, the tour is done in the comfort of your car! Later you can feed
animals, enjoy the petting zoo, and even treat your family to a gourmet lunch. For more
information call 865-919-5072.
Tooty-Fruity Pickin’. Strawberries, blueberries, and cherries are almost done for the
year, but don’t loose heart because apples are ripe and ready for picking! Rogersville has
a young apple orchard that has lots for the taking. Get your family outside on a sunny day
and go learn about the apple, get some and take home to make a yummy fruit pie. Melody
Orchard is open through October, usually 9 to 5. Call first to make sure you can come at
423-591-0586.
Ring around the Campfire. Pocket full of s’mores! Campfires are great in twilight in
summer and are even better at autumn time. Get out the lawn chairs, don the sweater, and
let your kids roast goodies over an open flame. It’s a great way to relax for both parent and
child. Tell stories and jokes around the fire and make new family memories. After the kids
go to bed, mom and dad can enjoy alone time before the fire goes out. It makes for a nice
evening, no matter the season!
What’s worked before will work once more. Fire up a little grill in the park and
enjoy a cookout and hike with the kids. See how far you and your brood can race up and
down the Greenbelt in Kingsport.

SHOULDN’T HURT!
Child abuse is a serious matter, one that can be hidden and can take place everyday. As
moms, we find it hard to believe that people can abuse children. They need us to lead them
and protect them. But national figures confirm that the problem is real and the Children’s
Advocacy Centers of the Tri-Cities are available to help and provide confidential treatment.
On the Child’s Advocacy Center of Bristol, VA website http://virginia.nationalchildrensalliance.
org/index.php?s=3353, several statistics and information about child abuse is given:
• More than 800,000 children are confirmed as victims of abuse or neglect each year in the U.S.
• Neglect is the most common form of child maltreatment, followed by physical abuse.
• Younger children (ages 0-6) are the most vulnerable to abuse.
• One in three girls and one in five boys will be sexually assaulted
before they reach the age of 18.
• Perpetrators often consist of family members, friends, and acquaintances. 95% of all
victims know their perpetrators.
• There are a large percentage of children who do not disclose abuse until
adulthood,if ever at all.
• Some consequences of child sexual abuse include fear, loneliness, selfblame, poor self-esteem, anger, and mental health issues.
• Disclosure of child sexual abuse is a process. It is estimated that only
one in ten child victims disclose abuse.
The Children’s Advocacy Center has offices throughout the TriCities to
help victims of child abuse:
Children’s Advocacy Center in Johnson City: You can get short or long term
counseling, group therapy, special, private interviewing as well as participate
in educational and prevention programs. There is support for court
appearances, and help with finding extra housing, medical, and financial
assistance. For information, call 423-926-6528.
13
Children’s Advocacy Center in Sullivan County: Everything is confidential and the process to
help a child who is a victim is swift and painless as possible. To avoid multiple interviewing and
examination, the CAC of Sullivan County works to write down the answers to pass along to the
appropriate departments, keeping the child away from too many repetitive questions and feeling
even more traumatized. They also provide community education to help others learn how to
report abuse. For information, call 423-279-1222.
Children’s Advocacy Center of Bristol, VA: This non-profit organization has several centers
across the state of Virginia, and is able to help children who have been witness to or victimized
in an abusive situation. The CACVA looks to minimize traumatic events that children have gone
through, eliminate being interviewed over and over again, and help lead a child to recovery from
what they have been exposed to. For information, call 276-645-5867.
How can you prevent child abuse?
1. Tell your kids to never go anywhere with anyone, even with relatives, until they clear it with
you first. Most abuse cases are caused from family friends and relatives, usually from a
person who the child trusts. Strangers are much less likely to abuse.
2. Have your child carry or memorize their phone number and street address. Kids can soak
up a lot. Make a song out of your address and phone number so they can sing it to a police
officer or to someone who can help them if need be.
3. Teach your child that if they even feel weird or uncomfortable, to run
away as fast as they can. There is nothing wrong with getting
out of something if they don’t like what they see or hear.
4. Consider getting a pay-by-the-month phone for
emergencies for younger children.
5. Use the buddy system. Whether it is with their friends
or siblings, never let them go anywhere alone.
6. Communicate all the time with your children about
being safe. You don’t have to overdo it, but it’s a good
idea to go over this stuff every month or so, just to
make sure they understand.
As moms, we cannot imagine what it would be like to learn
that our own children have been abused on any level. But,
it is a very real thing that cannot be ignored. Many times
children will want to clamp up and not reveal anything that
might have happened or is going on, but we have to work
to lovingly and caringly seek help and recovery for any
child who has been traumatized. Moms, you are the
shield, the help, and many times the voice of your child –
protect now and listen when there is a need!
To share ways on how to protect your children and
others, please speak out at www.TriCityMom.com

Get those kids to EAT!
Do you like being sneaky and tricky? Do you
like to scam people into doing things they
might otherwise not do? Well, we have an
outlet for you, a new idea that is taking over
kitchens across the country!
These days, it is hard to get our kids to eat
good, healthy food. It is no trouble trying
to get them to consume cake, candy, and
cookies; but when it comes to salads, steamed
veggies, and whole grains, kids are more than
likely to say “No thanks….I’ll go hungry.” They
are missing out on vital nutrients their bodies
need, and we moms feel the guilt over it.
Sure, they might get a vitamin every day, but is
it enough? How can you get your kids to eat
the goodies that are good for their body?
Jessica Seinfeld, Jerry Seinfeld’s wife, has
written a book called “Deceptively Delicious,”
which gives tips and recipes on how to cook
your tasty favorites with special ingredients.
She talks about how your can puree
vegetables and put them into fun, everyday
foods like macaroni and cheese and brownies.
The kids never know that they’re eating their
veggies! That means, no more telling them to
have just three more bites because they will
scarf down their dinner with no suspicions they
have been “tricked!”
You can buy her book on the web or at a
bookstore, but to give you an idea of what
we’re talking about, here are is an idea of a
recipe you can use and see if the “Deceiving”
idea works on your kids:
Mac and Cheese – Healthy Style:
Take one onion, a stick of butter and sauté
over medium heat; make sure the onion is
see-through before moving on to the next step.
Add two tablespoons of flour and 1.5 cups of
milk. Lower the heat and stir until thick. Bring
a large pot of water to boil and cook one box
of elbow macaroni, drain and set aside.
Meanwhile, take a cup of carrots OR a cup of
cauliflower and puree.
Shred 24 oz of sharp cheddar; use 16 oz.
to mix into the thickened mixture on the stove
and set aside the other 8 oz. Also mix in the
veggie puree and let it become one melted
bliss.
Mix in the cooked macaroni with the cheese/
veggie mixture and coat well. Pour into a
baking pan and top off with the remaining
cheese. Cook at 350 degrees for 30 to 45
minutes, until golden brown.
Your kids won’t even know that they’re eating
extra nutrition, and they will ask for seconds.
Other dishes you can get creative with
are brownies, spaghetti, soup, bread, and
meatloaf –really anything that can bake/cook
with a puree. Spinach, tomato, peas, green
beans, and more can all be used to hide extra
nutrition in with your recipe that kids already
love. Get creative, fun, and most importantly,
deceitful!
Local farmer’s markets have a wide variety of
choices to play these healthy pranks on your
kids. Bristol, Kingsport, and Johnson City will
have their markets open through the fall time,
usually on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Check
them out, get cooking, and starting tricking
those children!

THAT’S BETTER FOR YOU.
Now is the best time of year to think about a
workout routine because evenings outside will
be getting chillier for pleasant jogs and walks,
and gyms are open to welcoming new members
now more than ever. As we prepare to go
into winter time, it would be nice to keep from
getting pudgier by getting a head start on fitness
now. Fitness in fall, that has a nice ring to it,
doesn’t it?
Get outside and get active! Lifestyle exercise
is encouraged when it comes to working out.
Raking leaves together, outside home projects
such as planting new curb appeal items, or just
running around with the family dog are great
ways to keep active with the family.

Shore or the Overlook Trails, as both are just ½
a mile each, so they are easy for kids. For a
more challenging hike, try the Devil’s Backbone
Trail at 2.5 miles or the Sinking Waters Trail
System at 3 miles in 3 loops. For information,

THE
SICKNESS BLUES
School and day care are in full swing and it’s almost the time of year when flu season and
other sicknesses will hit. You can’t see an illness coming, and when it does hit your child,
it can feel like a ton of bricks! What is the best way to prevent sickness? Become familiar
with the procedures at your child’s day care and school, and get involved when you feel
they aren’t doing enough. Also, how can you get through sickness when it does hit your
family? Mom is always thought of as a “robo-doc” when it comes to caring for sick kids.
Your needs and cares go out the window completely, but you need to care for yourself just
as much as you care for your little sick one(s)!
HOW CAN YOU PREVENT
SICKNESS?
An article from WebMD (www.webmd.
com/cold-and-flu/cold-guide/germs-inschool-room) gives nine tips on keeping
well in school and daycare, tips that can be
followed for years to come:
Wash your hands frequently throughout
the day.
Soap up under warm water and pass the
time by singing a song for no less than
20 seconds. The “ABC” song is great for
younger kids.
Verify the hand-washing policy of staff.
For many families, daycare is essential.
Check the policy with the staff and see how
many sinks there are for frequent hand
washing.
Send your child equipped with
mechanical pencils.
Studies have shown that the dirtiest thing
in any classroom is the community pencil
sharpener, says Charles Gerba, PhD, a
professor of microbiology at University of
Arizona in Tucson. “Pack mechanical pencils
in your child’s school supplies so he or she
doesn’t have to use it.”
Wipe down common surfaces with
disinfectant.
Doorknobs, desks, handles, and more are
often not cleaned in school. Remind the
teacher to do this, or offer to volunteer to
disinfect the classroom yourself!
Carefully wipe down desks and
keyboards.
Keyboards and mouses have a lot of germs
– make sure those are disinfected regularly,
too. Maybe send antibiotic wipes with your
child to school and remind them to clean the
computer before use.
Send functional tissues to school with
your child.
Anit-virus tissues are on the market, and are
made to kill germs when used. These are
best for keeping germs at bay. Also, sneeze
into tissues and cough into your elbow
instead of your hands. If you cough into
your hands, wash right away.
Don’t borrow crayons.
These surfaces carry germs – make sure
your child has enough art and school
supplies to not have to borrow – or share.
Make sure community toys are clean.
Disinfecting wipes can clean hard surface
toys. Washing soft, plush stuffed toys can be
done frequently to keep germs away.
22
Hang your backpack in the restroom.
“The bottom of women’s purses are pretty bad,” says Charles Gerba, PhD, a professor of
microbiology at University of Arizona in Tucson. “About 25% have fecal bacteria because
women put it down on the toilet floor in restroom,” he explains. “Encourage your son or
daughter to hang their
backpack on a hook if
they take it to the school
restroom.”
HOW CAN YOU
COPE WHEN
YOUR CHILD
GETS SICK?
Even though you have
worked to prevent sickness
in your school and daycare,
your child still got sick! That
will happen – there is no
magic way to keep all kids
completely healthy and
safe. Your child is sick and
you need to become Nurse Mom! How can you cope with this new demand?
1.
Make sure you get rest! Sleep when your child sleeps and maintain some level of rest.
2.
Keep disinfecting the house while your child is sick in the bed. Spray and wipe down
the house, and even take this time to clean the germiest areas: the phone, door
handles, banisters, and chairs.
3.
Make it comfy for two. Stay with your child while they watch a movie and suck down
chicken noodle soup. Take time to relax while they are down – their lack of energy
means mom can actually sit for a moment.
4.
If they can stomach it, make their favorite meal. It will be therapeutic to escape to the
kitchen and make something yummy, and then will feel great when you can share it
together. Plus, the rest of your family won’t go hungry during this tough time.
5.
Keep the other kids and hubby away – sickness should be stopped in its tracks. Make
them do jobs around the house while you stay and care for the cute, little sick-o.
You can never be too sure of sickness and being free from germs is a never ending battle.
Caring for yourself and your children is a full time job, but is necessary during the colder
seasons.

“Sometimes it takes
the right message
to get your attention.”
“I’ve been fit and healthy all
my life, but I was ignoring
my chest pains. Thankfully,
they found the heart disease
in time ... even though I was
a little stubborn.”
Ignoring chest pains
is just as ridiculous
as ignoring a fire.
