EDITOR
Anyone out there looking for a new challenge?
Maybe something to break up the monotony of the same
old racing schedule? Perhaps something a little different
from your home town 5K? How about taking over as
Split Times editor?! Just kidding (well…maybe not)!
Actually, I was thinking of something….dirtier. Oh, get
your mind out of the gutter. How about a new race
destination? One with sand, sun and water. Myrtle
Beach? I suppose that would be fine but I was thinking
of something a bit closer to home. Something with a lot
fewer mini golf courses and a lot more trees. Have you
guessed it yet?

Well, I can’t have my readers (all two of you)
dying of suspense so I guess I’ll just tell you. How about
giving the Springmaid Splash X “stream” Challenge 10K
a whirl? This year’s event will held at 8:30AM on August
25, 2007. This race has it all (if you are really sick in the
head that is). You start out in the middle of a huge field
with about 400 other wackos. At the sound of the gun
you bolt across the pasture, trying to be one of the first
50 or so runners through the gate. You then funnel onto
a one lane “road” that is primarily composed of grass

By now, your legs will be quivering and you should be seeing stars (unless you have blacked out completely –

Side Aches
By Bryan Whitesides MPT, OCS
Most of us have experienced the wrath of the side ache demons. What causes side aches (or stitches) and
how can you get rid of them? Although the cause isn’t well known, most doctors think that the pain is related to
the structures that hold the abdominal organs in place (visceral ligaments) or that the pain is related to the
diaphragm, possibly a muscle cramp. The answers to how you can get rid of a side ache range from altering
your breathing to drinking water upside down.
One popular sports medicine doctor stated that 30% of runners breathe out as they strike with their right foot
and that this causes the ligaments that support the liver to be “stretched and hurt” (I couldn't find any research
that verifies this claim). The doctor advocated breathing out as the left foot hits the ground to avoid a side
ache, and to cure the side ache he suggested putting your fingers into the right side of your belly to push your
liver up. I actually tried the foot strike technique on my next run and concluded that I would become neurotic if
I stuck with this program. However, I have had some luck with applying pressure to the sore area.
Doctor Darren Morton at the Avondale Centre for Exercise Science in Australia has been doing research on
side aches, or exercise related transient abdominal pain (ETAP), for the past six years. Of the sixteen studies
published in the medical journals, nine were written by Dr. Morton. The Doctor is determined to find out more
about this extremely common condition, which he states nearly 60% of runners have experienced.
According to Dr. Morton side aches are most likely an “irritation of the parietal peritoneum…perhaps
exacerbated by friction.” The parietal peritoneum is the outer lining of your abdomen, if you could reach
beneath your abdominal muscles, you would be touching the peritoneum. Dr. Morton presents the case that
side aches are not related to the diaphragm because breathing capacity is not lowered during a side ache, and
horse back riding has a high incidence of side aches although breathing is not vigorous. He also argues
Split Times, page 3
against the theory that the pain arises from the ligaments that support the abdominal organs because
swimmers frequently experience side aches, and swimming does not strain the ligaments.
So, when your training partner asks why you are doubled over in the middle of a run, you can intelligently tell
them how irritated your parietal peritoneum is. Perhaps repeating the phrase “parietal peritoneum” ten times,
quickly, will alleviate the pain, or at least distract you for long enough to regain your composure.
Unfortunately, there is very little research on how to prevent or relieve a side ache. Much of the information on
the Internet is based on the theory that side aches are caused by a “pinched diaphragm” or a “muscle cramp of
the diaphragm,” which according to Dr. Morton may not be the underlying cause. Based on Dr. Morton’s
research some suggestions can be made.
• Run regularly - people who train more days per week tend to have fewer side aches.
• Don’t eat a large meal 1-2 hours prior to a run.
• Avoid fruit or high carbohydrate / electrolyte drinks prior to or during a run if you are susceptible to
stitches (try diluting a drink like Gatorade in half).
• For those who have a more rounded posture in the mid back, performing stretches to improve your
posture may be helpful.
• Anticipate fewer side aches with each birthday (one of the few benefits of aging).
In addition to Dr. Morton's findings runners often report some relief with the following strategies.
• Slow the pace or briefly walk.
• Reach overhead and leaning to the opposite side to stretch the stitch.
• Apply moderate pressure to the stitch for about ten seconds.
Hopefully, with a better understanding of side aches, researchers can provide us with improved methods to
prevent and relieve this condition. Until then, keep running!

been running for over 20 years and is now old enough that he rarely experiences side aches).
I'm Going to Be Last . . . but IT'S OK!
By Donna Bays
Well, I'm proud to say that I have checked off "Run a 10K" from my goal sheet. After a brief Crazy 8
celebration period, I realized it was time to get serious. The Eastman Road Race was just seven weeks away.
My goals for the 10K were a little different from the Crazy 8 race. The main goal was the same, to finish. But
this time I had a time limit. After 80 minutes the organizers would close the course and open the streets back
up to traffic. So there was my mantra . . . BEAT THE BUICK . . . BEAT THE BUICK! As for not finishing last,
well I knew that would be a miracle. I tried to prepare my family and friends for this very real possibility.
Whenever I would tell them they would laugh and say "Oh, you won't be last!" I would look back and say "No,
no, no. Really, I will probably be last and IT'S OK!" I didn't want them to be shocked or think that I had
collapsed somewhere along the way.
In preparing for the 10K I came to realize a couple of things. One, runners have great control over their
bodies. Two, I am no runner. I am a mother of two who didn't heed the warnings to do those ever important
bladder control exercises after giving birth. All I can say is, on race day I had to choose between proper
hydration and bladder control. Road races are just not designed for women like me. They had three water
stations and absolutely no, I mean zero, bathrooms.
Before the Crazy 8 race I had done most of my running alone. I told myself that I enjoyed the solitude, but
really I just couldn't keep up with anyone. However, my friend Cinda (a very accomplished runner – but she
would never tell you that) began running with me. She was happy to let me set the pace. This change was
Split Times, page 4
absolutely wonderful. On the morning of the race, Cinda and I made our way to the starting area and in a few
minutes we were racin'.
As I had expected, even from the very beginning I was in the back of the crowd. I didn't dare look back. I
didn't want to confirm anything too quickly. Then, after about a mile into the race, I spotted him . . . the one
person I thought I could beat. He was a really big guy, I mean Shaquille O'Neal big. As he ran he looked like
a tree swaying in the wind. I told Cinda my plan and she cautioned me not to go after him too fast, it was still
early. So, I paced myself, just inching up on him. At mile two it happened. As I passed him the theme music
from "Chariot's of Fire" played on the loud speakers of my brain. YES, I'M NOT GOING TO BE LAST!!!!
At mile four I realized the race volunteer (you know the one, the one that follows the person in last place) was
circling me like a buzzard over road-kill. "Oh no" I said to Cinda. "Shaq must have quit." "Uh oh" I told myself,
"I'm going to be last, but IT'S OK!"
The end of the race was absolutely wonderful. A few of the folks that I had been training with from the Track
Club had stayed behind and was there to cheer me on as well as my family. And my dear friend Cinda, who
could have finished several minutes before me, stepped back and let me finish in front of her. My time was
1:13:20 . . . not a Buick in sight! My father gave me a wonderful complement. He said he had watched about
300 people finish the race and I was the only one he saw smiling.
As it turned out, Shaq didn't quit. He and one other man came across the finish line just a couple of minutes
later. I cheered like crazy for them. WE WERE LAST AND IT WAS OK!!
SFTC Board?? Say What???
By Brenda Fox
As a member of State of Franklin Track Club Board (how many of you already knew that – raise your hands!), I
thought I’d let you know a few interesting points about your Board.
First of all, did you know that during the last couple of years your SFTC Board designated $10,000 to be
placed in a high-yield CD? Did you know that Rob Schoborg, with the Board’s assistance, is working on a
grant/scholarship program that would award money to different area runners and/or programs? Did you know
the Board instituted a policy to award volunteer points that can be used as club dollars for race registrations,
membership fees, and club merchandise? Did you also know that you can read the Board minutes on the
SFTC website?
Do you know your SFTC Board Members? They are:
President: Steve Pastorek
Past President: David Fox
President-Elect: Matthew Studholme
Treasurer: Jason Goodman
Secretary: Brenda Fox
Bristol Rep: Maria Studholme
Johnson City Rep: David Sullivan
Kingsport Rep: Mark Skelton
Race Walk Rep: Bobby Baker
Split-Times Editor: Rob Schoborg
There are also some other people who fill some very important roles: Bob Townsend - volunteer coordinator;
Matthew Studholme – Course Measurement and King & Queen Competition; Jason and Nicole Goodman –
Membership; David Fox – Race Management & Equipment and Webmaster; Tandy Fleming – Equipment;
Wendy Weidner – Long Distance Series.
Without all of these people donating their time and talents, the Board of SFTC would not be able to accomplish
as much as it does. Do you have to have a “specific” talent to be a Board Member? Not at all – you only need
to be willing to devote a little time each month to the meetings and to have an interest in keeping a fine
organization running smoothly.
Split Times, page 5
SFTC prides itself on promoting running, walking, and healthy lifestyles in the upper East
Tennessee/southwest Virginia/western North Carolina area. As a means to that end, the club either owns or
manages several great local races. And we’re always looking for folks to help us with these as liaisons,
volunteers, or race directors. We can’t do it without the members of our club. And the Board is the entity that
manages those efforts.
I started going to Board Meetings about 2-3 years ago with David, my husband, the runner. He has attended
for several years because of his role as webmaster. At first, I thought he was nuts when he came home and
told me how much fun the meetings could be – I hate meetings! But he would tell me about some of the lively
discussions that were held around different items that came before the Board, and eventually I started going
just so he wouldn’t have to repeat everything when he got home. And you know what? He is nuts, but he was
right about the meetings – they are fun.
Did you know that the meetings are open to any club member who wants to attend? Any club member can
attend any meeting any time of the year. And the best part? You get a volunteer point just for attending! How
easy is that? If you attend all 12 meetings every year, you could almost pay for a race registration with the
volunteer points you would earn. By the way, we often have dinner at the meetings – a lot of times it’s pizza
and homemade cookies (thanks, Nicole). You can find the time and location of the meetings on the race
calendar on the website. You learn a lot about what the issues concerning the club are – like what races we
are hired to manage or own (denoted on the calendar), how we are going to promote running in the area
(grant/scholarship program, Kids Festival of Miles, King & Queen competition, Long Distance Series, and the
issues surrounding these), who’s submitting articles to the Split-times, who we wish was submitting articles to
the Split-Times, and lots of other interesting tidbits.
Okay, reading back over this, maybe I haven’t made being on the Board or even attending a meeting sound
like the most fun you can have in your life, but it is a lot more fun than you’d initially think. And the Board is a
necessity. As with any good organization, a well-organized board of directors is what makes it good or even
great. I think most of us would agree that SFTC is a great organization. So how about showing a little
support, and coming to a meeting or two, or even volunteering for a position on the Board? You might be
surprised by how much you’ll like it!
Girls Shine at 5K Event
By Ani Boyd
Johnson City, TN. — Despite a little rain, 15 participants from the Fairmont Elementary Girls on the Run
program shined bright as they crossed the finish line of a 5K held on Saturday, May 5 at the Liberty Bell
Complex.
The 5K was the culmination of 12 weeks of preparation and training. Since February, the girls have met twice a
week at Fairmont Elementary to participate in Girls on the Run.
Girls on the Run is a non-profit prevention program that encourages 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade girls to develop selfrespect and healthy lifestyles through running. The unique curriculum combines physical training for a 5K
running event with uplifting lessons that encourage positive emotional, social, and mental development.
“It was amazing to watch each girl cross the finish line,” said Ani Boyd, Council Director and Coach. “They
worked so hard to reach this milestone, and it was wonderful for their friends and family to share the
accomplishment with the girls.”
Boyd has been working for the last year to bring Girls on the Run to the Tri Cities. Fairmont Elementary is the
first school to host the program.
“A year ago, I didn’t think this day would ever come,” said Boyd. “To see 15 excited girls complete the 5K was
a dream come true.”
Split Times, page 6
“It was not only a big day for the girls but also for Girls on the Run of Northeast Tennessee,” said Boyd. “The
phone has been ringing off the hook to start the program at elementary and middle schools in Johnson City,
Kingsport, and Greeneville.”
For the 5K, each girl was paired with a running buddy from the Science Hill Women’s Cross Country Team.
Several parents, siblings, and friends also completed the 5K.
Following the event, participants, friends, and family enjoyed a celebration in honor of the girls’
accomplishments. Each girl received a certificate, as well as a goody bag stuffed with healthy snacks and other
goodies donated by Smoothie King, Eastman Health and Wellness, and local volunteers.
Masey Carlson, Kaye Kaye Elrod, Makenzie Grant, Taylor Kelley, Madison Marchant, Cleo Mellish, Molly
Miller, Olivia Pardue, Courtney Patrick, Jennifer Rockhill, Taylor Sparks, Megan Thomas, Morgan Thomas,
Hayden Veronick, and Holly Wagner completed the 5K. The girls were coached by Ani Boyd and Nicole
Goodman, with assistance from Nedra Veronick and Beth Thomas.
Girls on the Run of Northeast Tennessee serves Carter, Greene, Hancock, Hawkins, Johnson, Sullivan,
Unicoi, and Washington counties. For more information, visit www.gotrnetn.org or contact Ani Boyd at 423677-3595 or by email at [email protected].
More Girls on the Run!
Article and photos by Nicole Goodman
Thought you'd like to hear a little more about Northeast Tennessee's inaugural Girls
on the Run 5K on Saturday, May 5.
The event was awesome! Despite a little bit of rain, the 5K went off without a hitch. I
can't tell you how proud I am of the girls. They did great! Our first girl crossed the
finish line in just over 28 minutes, and she's just a 3rd grader. All of our girls finished
under 43 minutes. They were truly amazing.
I ran around like a mad woman the whole time. I started with the girls, and for the first lap kept circling back to
cheer everyone on. Then I turned around and ran the wrong way to catch the first girl on her second lap. I ran
with her until the finish, which was on the track, and then I sprinted to the other side of the track to catch the
next girl coming in. I did
this for all of the girls
until
everyone
had
finished. And the whole
time I'm cheering for
them and screaming and
being a complete nut. It
was great! Jason ran the
entire course with the
front runner and then did

balloons.
The girls were so excited, and as promised, they got to dump a full bucket of water on me. It was freezing!! I
was completely drenched and soooo cold. I've attached a few pictures for you to see.
Split Times, page 7
I can't tell you how rewarding it was to watch those girls today. Ani and I were both in tears by the end. We
can't wait to do it all again in the fall!
Thanks to SFTC for supporting GOTR through the grant program. It looks like we'll have at least 4 sites in the
fall, including a Greenville site, 2-3 Johnson City sites, and potentially 1 Kingsport site. We've also received
several calls from middle schools about the Girls on Track program. We're hosting a GOTR summer camp in
Kingsport that will culminate with the Crazy Mile during Funfest.
We're planning to hold a GOTR 5K race next spring and will open registration to the public. More details to
come... For more information about GOTR, visit www.gotrnetn.org.

Foot Rx Takes a Giant Step into Town with New Approach
Foot Rx is currently ready to open up shop in Johnson City at the Peoples Crossing
Shopping Center off State of Franklin Rd. Opening is expected to be the first week in
June 2007.
Foot Rx is NOT the traditional running store, but a special blend of clinical and retail
knowledge that one would expect to find in cosmopolitan City.
Walk-in customers will get the feeling that they are receiving one on one service.
Individualized biomechanical gait and foot/ankle structure analysis conducted by
Certified Pedorthotists will ensure customers receive the right pair of shoes for
their unique feet. This science-based clinical approach to shoe fitting will completely
replace conventional methods.
Foot Rx will also implement a mobile service where certified experts will visit special
locations to perform on-the-spot gait analysis and provide footwear recommendations
to workshop attendees.
Foot Rx Running fabricates custom orthotics from scratch right to your feet.
Their special blend of functional and accommodative techniques can help bring balance
and relief to aching feet. These are made on site and sold at a fraction of the cost
patients can expect to pay elsewhere. How is this possible? This is made possible by
fabricating these orthotics right on site as you wait, not having to send them off to
expensive laboratories to be made. Foot Rx uses their own orthotic fabrication system
to accomplish this, greatly reducing the need for the "middle man" and greatly reducing
the cost to you, the consumer.

9th Annual VIRGINIA CREEPER MARATHON
Abingdon VA April 1, 2007
Virginia Creeper Trail
I am not sure that Frank Kibler would agree with this statement, but from a spectator’s perspective, the 2007
Virginia Creeper Marathon went off without a hitch. Although a bit warm and wet, the runners seemed relieved
that weather did not live up to its ferocious reputation from past years. Twenty-five of the 102 finishers were
first time marathoners – WOW! Take a gander at what the participants had to say…
"Despite the snafu of not finishing due to major hip issues, the race was gorgeous and the spirit of all the volunteers and
assistants was terrific. I meant it when I said I want to come back next year for another shot at my 'first time' marathon."
M.B., Hillsborough NC
"This was my first marathon and was quite an experience. A super job by all the volunteers, who really made the
difference. I will remember them and this day the rest of my life." C.G., Kingsport TN
"I was the guy who showed up late. Thanks for letting me start anyway, and thanks for the fun course. I had a great race,
and when I 'adjusted my time,' still ended up running my 2nd fastest marathon ever. I look forward to next year, and will
be on time!" K.T., Lebanon VA
"Thank you for letting me fulfill my dream of my first marathon. The whole experience could be summed up as
'outstanding' for me and my family. I am proud of your volunteers’ efforts. I will take lasting memories from my experience
and hope to repeat better next year." B.P., Leesburg VA
"WOW! What a great event. No frills, as advertised, but why would you need them? With a beautiful, scenic, challenging
course, spirited volunteers, a really cool paperweight, a $10 entry fee and the threat of the red bandana, what more do
you need? Your event REALLY brings home what some are missing by only running the 'Biggies.' I didn't have my best
time, but I had a GREAT time. Thanks for the temperate weather, the gentle grade changes, and for softening up the trail
to save these old legs. Thanks to a great group of volunteers who were friendly enough to 'take in' my daughter as one of
their own, which paid dividends each time I heard cheers of 'way to go, Stephanie's dad!' I guess what I really want to say
is, thanks for a great day and a memory of a lifetime!" S.B., Wyoming OH
"Thanks for a very fun and professional event! Excellent support, weather (yes the rain was fun!) and well placed fig bars.
The course was beautiful, especially near one turnaround, with so many bright yellow flowers in the cow pastures
contrasting with the grey rainy sky. Awesome!" A.B., Jefferson NC
"Thanks for such great support! Everyone was great and we had a good time. It was my first marathon, and tho not as
good a time as my training runs, was a good experience. Can't say enough about the friendliness of the folks! We'll come
back." M.D., Durham NC
"I am delighted to have missed a larger marathon a few weeks earlier and to have lucked into your very special event. I
absolutely loved the Virginia Creeper, even with the rain. It's a class act, and I can't thank you enough. I even made a
Boston qualifying time Hope to make the Creeper again." L.G., Radford VA
"Thanks for a great day and a great marathon. It was great to be back again this year among friends old and new. The
volunteers were great on the course and at the finish. They add so very much to our enjoyment in running the marathon in fact I suppose it would be impossible to run without them." C.C., Booneville MS
Split Times, page 11
"The race was well organized and we had a great time. Please let me know when we can sign up for '08! The Virginia
Creeper Marathon is on our 'list' as one of the best!" N.J.M., Stephens City VA
"I had such a positive first marathon experience at the Creeper. The volunteers at all the stations were so encouraging
and helpful, and the scenery every step of the way was incredible. I'm already making plans to return!" C.H., Falls Church
VA
"A wonderful experience. Volunteers, course, and even the weather were all great. I am recommending your race to all my
friends. My paperweight sits proudly on papers on my desk." E.S., Los Angeles CA
"This was a great place to run my first marathon. I was an early starter, and they went out of their way to make sure I got
started correctly and didn't miss any turns. Overall the course is beautiful. I even saw deer running on the course ahead of
me! Even in the rain, supporters were out there cheering me on. Other runners were very supportive also." M.T.,
Hendersonville NC {from www.marathonguide.com}
"The spectators stuck around through the rain and were wonderful cheerleaders. The crew was amazing, a group with
awesome southern hospitality! The course was interesting, and the area was beautiful. All in all, a great way to spend a
weekend!" M.C., Pittsburgh PA {from www.marathonguide.com}
"I loved the Creeper, and didn't mind the out-and-backs on the forgiving dirt trail. I qualified for Boston, but might have to
pass on that one to enjoy the Creeper again. This marathon is a model for what can and should be done more. No bigbusiness sponsor in the race name, and a $10 entry fee! Great, friendly, fun." L.G., Radford VA {from
www.marathonguide.com}
"Not sure what drove me to sign up for this marathon. Was it the name, the cost, the honest website, or the lure of a small,
friendly marathon? The answer is probably a combination of all these factors. No matter the reasons, I will never second
guess my decision to do so. I had the time of my life! The marathon was everything advertised and more. The course
beautiful, the race staff enthused and energetic, the volunteers cheery and hospitable, and the other runners as 'real,'
friendly and supportive as you'll find. If you are looking for big crowds, medals, t-shirts, post-race parties, loud music and
entertainment, skip this one. If you are looking to have one of the most memorable experiences you'll ever have running a
marathon, sign up now!" S.B., Wyoming OH {from www.marathonguide.com}

14th Annual RUN THE TUNNEL
Natural Tunnel State Park - Scott County VA May 19, 2007
Michael Delano claimed his fourth Run the Tunnel title in five years, literally running away from the rest
of the field in the 14th installment of this 3.7 mile road/trail event on May 19th. Delano’s winning time of 23:01
on the grueling course brought him to the finish line more than two minutes ahead of runner-up Hank
Clabaugh, who finished in 25:12. Close behind was Jeremy Faulk (25:19), while David Peters (25:53) and
Jimmy Dodson (26:24) rounded out the top five. Gerald Thompson of Lexington, KY, claimed the men’s
Masters title, finishing seventh overall in 28:23, while 11-time Tunnel veteran Buddy Thomas was the top
Grand Masters finisher, 11th overall in 29:41. Jeanne Parish claimed the women’s crown, finishing 16th overall
in 30:43. Vanessa Gibson was the women’s runner-up in 31:12, followed by eight-year-old Erin Hall (33:53),
Emma Studholme (34:55), and Chelsea Wild (35:47). Chelsea’s mother Pat Wild took the female Masters title
in 35:53, with Janice Hicks the
top Grand Masters in 39:22.
Runners at this unique
event were treated to even
more of an adventure than
usual, as road construction
within Natural Tunnel State
Park led to a few course
adjustments. This year, there
was a slight detour alongside
the section of road to the
cemetery. This was admittedly

dipped down, then had a
longer climb up the other side, all in a section of soft dirt that likened to running on sand dunes. Plus, as an
added bonus, smoke from a large smoldering pile of brush was wafting about. Finally, the runners crossed the
"field" on the dirt road bed, which means they had to go a bit farther along the top of the field before cutting

back into the trails. As race officials noted, this year's distance was a bit longer, perhaps 3.8 miles, but that
would likely go unnoticed, since the course was harder, too. For future reference, once construction is
complete, a new version of the course will be established and measured as best as practicable, and the race's
"more or less" reputation will roll on.

May 2007 Racewalking Report
Happy racewalking to everyone! Summer is now getting here. Hope you’ve
got yourselves a new pair of shoes to break in. Hope your training has been
good. I’ve been out regular doing my walking, plus doing some light weight
lifting. I believe you must have stronger upper body strength to make you
go faster. The Crazy 8’s walk will be here soon and I know everyone is
excited about it. Remember to listen to your body at all times and spend
some time in solitary training. Find yourself a good route in your
neighborhood and make it your track. Don’t forget to smell the flowers as
you walk.
I read where you replace 1% of your cells everyday. This means your body
is brand new today and another 1% will be new tomorrow. You have a
brand new body every three months. Can you believe it? We’re actually
walking and running around in a body that is in the process of becoming brand new. New Muscle, new liver,
new lungs, new skin. Look down at your legs and realize that you will have new ones by the 4th of July.
You choose whether those new cells come in stronger or weaker; whether they grow stronger or decay. Your
cells don’t care which choice you make. They just follow the directions you send. Run, walk, exercise and your
cells get stronger. Sit down and they decay. The reason many can’t walk as they get older is due to lack of hip
movements.
This should be a lesson to all of us as we go thru life. You’ve heard it said “What you don’t use, you lose it”. So
choose to renew your life. Start today. Move, have positive emotions. Your cells are listening.
AMERICOURT USATF 5K RACEWALK CHAMPIONSHIPS
Don’t forget the National Championship coming October 6th. This will be the 14th year and the 28th National
Championship Racewalk for Kingsport. Americourt has come aboard as our major sponsor. This year we will
also be hosting the Junior National Championships for the male and female racewalkers. A lot of planning is
being put into the event. Our Committee members Ruth Ketron, along with Barbara Taylor work very hard to

make it the “best” in the USA. The race will begin Oct 6th at 8 am at Americourt Inn. We hope everyone is still
out there walking and training real hard for this event. On Friday the 5th of Oct at 4:30 pm we will be having a
free racewalk clinic presented by Jim Carmines, a National Masters Champion. We hope to have some course
workouts beginning in August. Let me know if your interested in joining us. Who knows? I might just get in the
race this year and enjoy the competition with everyone. You can find information on our web page.

State of Franklin Track Club Grant-In-Aid Application
Eligibility: Elementary, middle, junior-high and high schools and other non-profit community organizations
from the Tri-cities area (see below) who wish to encourage running/walking as a part of a life-long commitment
to fitness. Organizations that wish to create or improve existing programs to encourage children or adolescents
to participate in the sport of running are particularly encouraged to apply for funds to implement/improve such
programs. Applications from organizations: 1) with a demonstrated track record in implementing community
improvement projects and 2) that encourage children or adolescent involvement in the local community will be
particularly competitive.
Applicant organizations located in the following areas are eligible. Tennessee (Washington Co., Carter
Co., Unicoi Co., Greene Co., Hawkins Co., Hamblen Co. and Sullivan Co.); Virginia (Washington Co.,
Russell Co., Smythe Co., Dickenson Co., Buchanan Co., Wise Co., Lee Co. and Scott Co.).
Award: The Grant-In-Aid is an award of up to $500. The SFTC board shall decide at the beginning of each
year how many grants will be awarded for that year. The SFTC reserves the right to withhold the awards in any
given year if: 1) the funds are not available or 2) none of the submitted applications qualify in the opinion of the
review committee. Once the grant is awarded and the non-profit status of the applicant organization is
confirmed, a check for the total amount will be mailed to the applicant organization. By accepting the check the
applicant organization agrees that: 1) the funds will be utilized ONLY for the purpose described in the
application, 2) the funds will be fully disbursed within 1 year of receipt and 3) a final progress report will be
submitted after all funds are spent. This final report will contain: 1) a one page description of the funded activity
as well as its benefits to the Tri-Cities running community, 2) attached receipts for goods and services totaling
to the award amount and 3) an appendix composed of up to 5 additional pages of supporting material (fliers,
news paper articles, race results) documenting the success of the funded activity. In order to be eligible for
future funding opportunities, an organization MUST submit a final report to SFTC. Please note that this final
report becomes the property of SFTC and may be used for promotional purposes.
Application Process: The applicant should submit an application following the instructions listed below by
June 1st or January 1st of each year. The review committee retains the right to reject late applications,
incomplete applications or those that do not follow instructions without review. An ad hoc committee
composed of at least three State of Franklin members and up to two members of the local scholastic running
community will review the applications. Applicants will be notified of the results within 8 weeks after each
deadline.
Instructions: A complete application will consist of the following:
Split Times, page 22
1) A cover letter listing the applicant’s name, organization name, organization address, organization
tax-free number, applicant’s home phone, applicant’s home address and an e mail address (if
available). It is essential that the contact information be up to date and correct so that the applicant can
receive award notification. If the contact information changes during the application process, it is the
applicant’s responsibility to assure that the review committee has the current address, phone etc. The total
number of pages in the application should also be indicated on this page. The applicant should also
sign the cover letter in ink.
2) A one page (or less) narrative by the applicant. This narrative should outline the proposed
program/activity with emphasis on predicted benefit to the local community and financial need. It is essential
that this narrative be concise and well written. Applicants should note that demonstration of financial need may
significantly increase the probability of grant funding.
3) A one page (or less) detailed budget. The proposed budget for the Grant-In-Aid should be detailed here.
Any single expense greater than $25 should be listed. A short justification of each expenditure (1-2 sentences)
should follow each item listed.
4) A one page (or less) list of the applicants (or applicant organizations) most significant previous
running and/or community service accomplishments (race/meet volunteering, community service activities
etc.). Applicants should note that a previous record of successful service accomplishments may significantly
increase the probability of grant funding.
5) All pages of the application should be type written (word processed from a laser or ink jet printer) on
white paper with one inch margins and 11 point (or larger) Arial font. All pages should be numbered at
the bottom. The applicant should submit the original, signed application and five copies. All copies of
the application should be stapled at the upper right hand corner. Mail the original and copies together
to the following address: Rob Schoborg, Re. State of Franklin Track Club Grant-In-Aid, 623 W. Maple St.,
Johnson City, TN 37601
6) The proposal MUST be post-marked by the due date. Late applications will not be considered for funding in
that funding cycle.
7) Questions? Contact Rob Schoborg at [email protected] or 423-439-6295.

Tennessee State Parks Running Tour
Welcome and Schedule for 2007-2008
Dear Runner,
Welcome to Tennessee State Parks Running Tour. This is the 29th year of this annual event. The Running
Tour was originally started because in the 70’s there were no road races during wintertime. Nowadays, there
are races every weekend all year long. With support from the Parks people, who provide traffic control and a
place to hold registration and award ceremony, and with help from the local running clubs, who provide timing
and post-race snacks, the Running Tour is a low-cost ($5), old fashioned alternative to the other events. By
participating in at least 5 races, the accumulated Grand Prix points are rewarded with a special gift at the end
of the Tour. In addition, the Running Tour is a unique opportunity to visit our beautiful State Parks and
participate in a challenging race that will keep you in good shape for the rest of the year. This year there are
three new courses, a 7.6 mile trail run, a 10K, and a half-marathon. Two new races have been added and one
race moved to a different State Park. There are now 18 races included in the Running Tour beginning with Two
Lakes Trail Run in Montgomery Bell State Park, Burns, on October 13. The other new race is Pioneer 10K in
Davy Crockett Birthplace State Park, Limestone, on December 15. Frostbite Half-marathon will be held in
Cedars of Lebanon State Park, Lebanon, on February 16, 2008. A new award category in the Grand Prix
Split Times, page 26
competition has been added, where race volunteers will get one point for working (race directors are not
eligible). The top ten volunteers will receive an award at the Tour Banquet following the last race on March 1,
2008. Good running and thank you for your support.
Come out, run and support the tour!

Group Runs in the Tri-cities Area
5 PM “Bank” Runs in Johnson City (By Steve Pastorek):
A group of 3-8 runners meets in the parking lot of First Tennessee Bank across State of Franklin Ave
from the East Tennessee State University minidome (at the south entrance of the VA Campus) @ 5:15pm
Monday – Thursday (and sometimes Friday). Most of us are training for various marathons. Our workouts
often follow the following format: Monday- 7 to 9 miles, Tuesday- speed work at the Science Hill outdoor track
or trails, Wednesday- usually an easy day (especially if we are racing or doing a long run on Saturday).
General pace varies from 7 to 8 minutes/mile with some runners running up to 9 minute miles. Our group is
growing and we would like to have more people come out. We do run on the roads so you need to dress
accordingly- if you think you will be out after dark (a pretty long run at this time of year), make sure and bring a
reflective vest! Email Rob Schoborg at [email protected] if you have any questions. Hope to see you out on
the run!
SFTC Sumer Training Program (By David Fox):
Starting on Monday Apr 30th and continuing through early September, the State of Franklin Track Club
will be holding it's Summer Training Program for beginner and intermediate runners. Meet each Monday
5:30pm at the Gold Star Fitness parking lot in Kingsport. Anyone can participate as we walk and jog on the
Greenbelt in small groups. More information can be found at www.RunTriCities.org
Foot Rx 3 and 5 mile Group Runs in Johnson City (By Rob Schoborg):
A group of 15-40 runners meets weekly at Foot Rx-Johnson City (3131 Peoples Street, suite 404,
Johnson City, TN) at 6:30 pm on Thursday. The store is located just south of the intersection between State of
Franklin Ave and I-26 near K-mart. There are two different courses: one that is 3 miles long and one that is 5
miles long; both are moderately hilly. The participants usually break up into 5-8 small groups at widely varying
paces (<7:00 to 10:00 minutes/mile). Steve and Allison provide Gatorade, water and popsicles after the run!
Email or call Steve Pastorek ( at 423-282-2235 or [email protected]) if you have any questions and to confirm
the run date/time (in case of last minute scheduling changes). Hope to see you out on the run!
SFTC Board Meeting Minutes
Feb. 8th, 2007: Members present: David Sullivan, Mark Skelton, Jason & Nicole Goodman, Steve Pastorek,
David & Brenda Fox, Matthew & Maria Studholme. Guests: Rhonda Denham, Wendy Weidner (Long Distance
Series), Harriet Locke, Bob Townsend (Volunteer Coordinator), Oscar Wagner, Rob Schoborg (Split Times
Editor), Alison Pastorek. Minutes from the January 2007 meeting were approved. Announcements (Steve
Pastorek): Knoxville Marathon needs pacers - if more info is needed, contact Steve Pastorek. Knoxville
Marathon held on April 1. Race that Studholmes were going to help with (Cancer Fundraiser) will not be held.
Johnson City Medical Center (Mountain States Health Center) will hold a race on March 10 @ 10:00am. They
need help with the course. Steve Pastorek can give information on this if anyone is interested in helping.
Proposal: Minutes be sent to Board members to be read prior to posting on website. War Party (Bob
Townsend): 167 runners, 35 walkers. Profit of $539.11. Walkers were pleased with participation in the 5K walk
and would like to have the walk again in 2008. They would like for the walk to become a club-owned event.
Board approval given: Incorporate 5K Walk into War Party with help from David Mills, Ruth Ketron and other
area walkers. (Motion - Steve Pastorek, second - David Fox). Issue: Voting members of board: suggestion that
membership coordinator and secretary be given voting rights on board issues. Tabled til next board meeting.
Grant Program (Rob Schoborg): Rob brought rough draft to the board. Board members will email Rob with any
suggestions so he can get all changes made before next meeting. Split Times (Rob Schoborg): Rob needed
list of awards for 2006 to publish in Split Times - he can get these from the website. He has also asked that
when people send race results that they format them in a manner that they can easily be put into Split Times.
Rob will attempt to publish next newsletter in a couple of weeks. Location of meetings (Steve Pastorek):
Discussion about satisfaction with meeting at Eastman Employee Center. Board feels EEC is fine to meet - will
Split Times, page 28
keep meetings there for the time being. King and Queen (Matthew Studholme): Matthew discussed
improvements that could be made to K&Q series: publicize races and requirements more, offer incentives,
provide a tickler a couple of times a year to check the K&Q results. Kids Festival of Miles (David Fox): David
discussed getting fliers out to schools and at area races, and boys and girls clubs in the area. Steve also
discussed possibly advertising club in area newspapers. Liaisons for 2007 Races: All positions filled for year so
far. David Fox pointed out there are some dates that need to be updated on the website by race directors.
Discussions: District reps: board to consider refiguring areas covered by each district rep . Board approved
motion to review Club Bylaws on a yearly basis. (Bylaws will be emailed to each board member for review
soon.) Board will review Bylaws in the next two months. (Motion - Matthew Studholme, second - David Fox).
Club Trip Discussions: Tom King 1/2 Marathon, Nashville, Cotton Row 5K or 10K, Gum Tree 10K, Mississippi,
Kentucky Derby 1/2 and Full Marathon, Kentucky, Fall Creek Falls (beginning of March). It was suggested the
Club pay for entry fees, runners responsible for room and board. Discussion whether club should pay for entry
fees, and should the club support personal preferences - does that meet the mission of the club to support
fitness in the Tri-Cities area? Many felt that is a way for the club to give back to the members. Lots of support
for a club trip in 2007. Suggestions for other club social events: Greeneville Baseball game, and Kingsport
Mets Baseball game, hike and picnic for club members, speaker for a membership meeting. Miscellaneous
(Various): At Wendy Weidner's request, the deadline for registering for the Long Distance Series is June 1.
Board approved advance of $200 to Frank Kibler for VA Creeper Marathon expenses already incurred.
(Motion, Matthew Studholme, second Steve Pastorek). Minutes submitted by secretary, Brenda Fox
Mar. 1st, 2007: Voting Members present: Mark Skelton, Matthew Studholme, David Sullivan, David Fox, Steve
Pastorek. Non Voting Members present: Bob Townsend, Brenda Fox. Minutes from the February 2007 meeting
were approved via email. Announcements (Steve Pastorek): Bristol Outreach 8K has posted to Race Calendar.
Charlie Roe is director. Course hasn't been decided, but they want to get it certified, and have Bristol Outreach
8K as an annual event. Varmint 1/2 Marathon and 5K has been posted to the Race Calendar. Heritage Days in
Rogersville needs a liaison from SFTC. Motion: (Matthew Studholme; 2nd David Fox): Mark Skelton to be
liaison for Heritage Days in Rogersville. Motion passed. Greeneville Astros need a liaison from SFTC for their
race. Motion (Mark Skelton; 2nd Matthew Studholme): Bob Townsend to be liaison for Greeneville Astros race.
Motion passed. Grant Program (Steve Pastorek for Rob Schoborg): Steve has final draft. One issue: whether
to include any counties in North Carolina for eligibility in Grant Program. The Board agreed to exclude all NC
counties from eligibility in the Grant Program. Matthew Studholme will email Rob about this issue, and the
Board will take an email vote. (Scholarship Program will be approved separately. Steve will ask Rob about
getting that ready for approval.). Long Distance Series (David Fox for Wendy Weidner): Wendy is requesting a
"Wild Card" race be added to the LDS for people who can not complete three races from SFTC schedule in
this area. After discussion, the Board elected to remain with present rules for LDS for this season. Kids Festival
of Miles (David Fox): David is looking to offload some responsibility. Jason and Nicole Goodman have taken
responsibility for Duck Island KFOM races. David is open to suggestions for changes in KFOM or getting
someone to take over responsibility for this series. Review of Club By-laws: Reviewed through Article V changes will be noted by club secretary and further reviews will be made at subsequent meetings. Club Social:
Picnic at either Laurel Run Park or Bays Mountain Park. Mark Skelton will co-ordinate this and Bob Townsend
will assist. Club will provide drinks, ice, paper plates, napkins, hot dogs, buns and condiments. Mark is
checking dates and availability of shelters and will add to Race Calendar. Club Trip 2007: Steve Pastorek will
come up with proposals for club Trip to bring to next meeting. Steve also agreed to have merchandise (singlets
and shorts) identified and agreed upon, purchased and delivered (for those that order merchandise) by May 1.
General Membership Meeting with Speaker: Steve Pastorek will bring information about cost of speakers and
other particulars to next meeting. Minutes submitted by secretary, Brenda Fox
Apr. 10th, 2007: Voting Members present: Mark Skelton, David Sullivan, David Fox, Matthew Studholme,
Steve Pastorek, Jason Goodman. Non Voting Members present: Nicole Goodman, Brenda Fox, Bob
Townsend. Guests: Wendy Weidner, Harriet Locke. Minutes from the March 2007 meeting were approved via
email. Davy Crockett State Park Tour Race (Bob Townsend): Bob Townsend was contacted by Karen (?)
about a State Park Running Tour race to be held at Davy Crockett State Park in Greeneville. Bob had
recommended that she talk with the Park Tour Races directors. The race was approved by the State Park
Tours committee. The race co-ordinator would like for SFTC to take ownership of the race. Date would be Dec.
15, 2007. Bob recommends supporting this race, and offered to be director. Motion (Steve Pastorek): SFTC to
take ownership of new Davy Crockett State Park race with Bob Townsend as director. The distance must be
Split Times, page 29
certified. Second by Matthew Studholme. Passed. Split Times (Steve Pastorek for Rob Schoborg): Split Times
has been published, comments are positive. Rob intends to publish it four times per year. Matthew Studholme
recommends emailing club members with email addresses to ask if they would prefer to have only online
copies of Split Times. The option may also be added to membership forms. Grant Program (Steve Pastorek for
Rob Schoborg): No formal application has been put together yet. Recommendation that guidelines for the
application be compiled from the program documentation and put in a Word Document. Deadlines for 2007 will
be June 1 for applications to be received, and August 15 for dispensing money. Steve Pastorek will notify
Bristol Cross of Grant Program so they can apply for it. Long Distance Series (Wendy Weidner): 31 people
have signed up for this race season. Nicole Goodman (Membership) will email Wendy (and all Board
members) a list of all club members. Blue Plum Festival Race (Matthew Studholme): Matthew has noticed that
on the Blue Plum Festival website, the Festival organizers cite a partnership between Blue Plum and SFTC
although SFTC has entered into no partnership with Blue Plum. The concern is that SFTC insures a safe and
well-managed course, and there have been safety issues on the Blue Plum course for the last couple of years.
SFTC does not want to be made to look responsible for the lack of safety on the course. David Fox will speak
to race organizers. Additionally: David Mills has approached the Blue Plum organizers about having a walk at
Blue Plum. David Mills is in charge of the walk. Kids Festival of Miles and Summer Track Meets (David Fox):
Everything for KFOM and Summer Track Meets is going well so far. General Membership Meeting and
Speaker from ZAP Fitness (David Sullivan): David Sullivan has contacted ZAP Fitness about the possibility of
having a speaker at one of our general membership meetings. Fall would be a better time for the club. ZAP
Fitness does not charge a set fee, they ask for donations to be made to ZAP. David Sullivan will continue to
work on this. Club Social (Mark Skelton): Mark Skelton has reserved Laurel Run Park for May 19. Time to be
set. Club Trip 2008 (Steve Pastorek): Fall Creek Falls (March 1, 2008) has been chosen as the proposed Club
Trip for 2008. Too late to get a club trip this year. Steve recommends checking into reserving cabins at Fall
Creek Falls and having club members pay the club. Matthew Studholme cautions against overcrowding the
race schedule. Club Outing (David Fox): Kingsport Mets have not posted their schedule for the year.
Miscellaneous (Various): Wendy Weidner asked when Bridge and Trestle will be scheduled. Steve Pastorek
will ask Rob Schoborg and email date to Wendy. (Roan Mountain will be October 20). Rhythm and Roots:
Harriet Locke, Wendy Weidner and Sharon Fleenor will be co-directors. Wendy asked about what the cost
would be. David Fox says similar to last year, around $350. David Sullivan asked about having a forum on the
website. David Fox is trying to get a new forum, but has not had any luck with it yet. Treasurer's Report (Jason
Goodman) Total Assets: $21,110.81 Net Income YTD: $817.73. Minutes submitted by secretary, Brenda Fox.
