“Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler”
(Let the Good Times Roll!)
This was an event at Fountain Bowl like few
others: part bowling, part Mardi Gras, part
casino—all assembled to take place on Saturday, March 11 to provide much-needed resources for California Elwyn’s mission of helping people turn their challenges into success.
Elwyn was established in 1852 to maximize
the potential of the mentally disadvantaged
among us. Their accredited programs and
services in Orange County are directed toward
providing community employment, training
and placement for men and women of all ethnicities who otherwise may not have the opportunity of entering into the mainstream
workforce.
There was definitely a carnival atmosphere
prevailing at this event. Bowling practice began at 3:45 PM, with the official start of the
Activities in full swing
competition 45 minutes later. Then, the casino tables and dessert bar opened and the
“blue ticket” drawings were held. At 7:00 PM

the bowling trophies were awarded and
the “silent auction” ended. There were
also “green ticket” casino prize drawings,
and there were plenty of quality prizes
which had been donated by 50 sponsors
and donors given out to the many funloving participants.
The bowlers’ food was donated by Albertsons. Coastal Coachworks was the
“platinum” sponsor, and also sponsored
the largest number of bowlers. Time
Warner, The Calvert Company, and Rotary International also contributed generously to this worthy cause. Additionally,
40 businesses and individuals sponsored lanes resulting in many good
hearts giving generously to help those
less fortunate.
Many VIP’s, pictured above left to right,
were in attendance: the Honorary Event
Manager and Fountain Valley Mayor
Cheryl Brothers, was there to show the
city’s support, as were Mark Sorenson,
Time Warner Board Member; Teresa Foster, Time Warner Special Assistant to the
General Manager; Linda Parra, Time Warner Lead Auditor; Michael Danzi, CEO of
Coastal Coachworks; Joan McKinney,
M.R.A., Executive Director of California
Elwyn, who did a marvelous job as the
Event Director; join Dave “Ozzie” Osborn,
VP/General Manager of Fountain Bowl.
Bowling, good-will, and enthusiastic
generosity prevailed in the hundreds of
kindred spirits who participated in various ways in the Elwyn Bowl-A-Thon benefit. It was a successful, exciting day at
Fountain Bowl, and the 9th one is already
scheduled at this time next year. Be
sure to be here!

OF DISTINCTION
Dorothy Viola Bell Woolsey
When she is in a good mood - and you
will know when she isn’t - Dorothy will tell
you she was born in Salem, Oregon on
April 30th “many years ago.” Her family,
father and mother, Jim and Donelda Bell,
and
an
older
brother Glenn, lived
in Salem for about
a year before moving to Larned, Kansas.
The family resided
in Larned for eight
years then picked
up and packed up
to relocate in Buena
Park, California.
There,
Dorothy
finished elementary
school at Dr. Peter Marshall Elementary
School. She then went to Crescent Junior
High and subsequently graduated from
Savanna High in 1970. She then went to
a trade school for one year and then married the “boy next door”. Living just two
houses away, David Anthony “Tony” Woolsey courted Dorothy and won her heart.
They were married in 1971.
For three years they lived in an apartment in Buena Park, until Tony’s mother
decided to move to Texas. Dorothy and
Tony bought his mother’s house, and
they have lived there ever since. They
have raised five children, four boys and
one girl: Nathan, Aaron, Wesley, and
twins Shanna and Gary.
Dorothy has worked at Fountain Bowl
for more than four
years. She started
as the League Coordinator in the front
office. She coordinates the leagues,
but has taken on
the additional duties as the Office
Manager.
When Dorothy is
in a bad mood, you
have to ask her who
she is at that precise time. Sometimes she may answer to
Eve, Sybil, Barbara or Ann. She likes to
teases those who know and love her, and
takes pride in bragging that “The Seven
Faces of Eve” has nothing on her.

From the Junior Department
During the weekend of March 11 and
12, 2006, Fountain Bowl junior bowlers
completed competition in the District
Finals of the Pepsi Championship Tournament held at Linbrook Bowl in Anaheim. 69 Fountain Bowl juniors competed in this qualifying tournament trying
to earn scholarships and the chance to
advance to the State Finals in Fresno,
California. We at Fountain Bowl are
crossing our fingers hoping that many of
our youth bowlers will advance to the
State Finals.
On March 25 & 26, Fountain Bowl will
host the OC USBC Youth Championship
Tournament. Fountain Bowl will host the
team events.
Fountain Valley school leagues ended
March 9, but a No-Tap league to replace
them started March 16 and will continue
until the end of May. It has always been
a fun and popular league for the Junior
bowlers.
A copy of Fountain Bowl’s summer Junior league schedule is in the display case
at the entrance of the center. A copy of
this schedule appears elsewhere in this
newsletter.
From the Youth Coordinator: GOOD
LUCK AND HIGH SCORING TO ALL!!

What Is Your BQ? (Bowling Quotient)
Find out with the following quiz!
Bowling has really been around a long time. Historians have evidence that the ancient Egyptians played a miniaturized version of bowling, and 9-pins, the precursor of the modern sport, was such a popular gambling game in Colonial America that it
was banned for legal and moral reasons. However, the colonists loved to play, so they circumvented the law by adding a tenth
pin to the formation and changed the pin arrangement to its present form. Thus, “modern” bowling was invented!
Bowling now has appeal around the world. It’s an excellent physical and social activity that has found great favor with the
young and old alike.
Since you are reading this now, you are probably “into” bowling at least somewhat, but how much “incidental” information
have you acquired about the sport since your association with it?
To find out, see how many of the following questions you can answer correctly. Some may be easy, but others are a little
more challenging.
By the way, there are no “trick” questions. So, put on your thinking cap and see how much you know about America’s # 1
participation sport, BOWLING! The answers and the “BQ” scale will appear in the next issue of The Fountain Pin.
1. What is the maximum permissible
weight of a regulation bowling ball? (1
point)
2. How many feet is it from the foul
line to the head pin? (1 point)
3. What is the highest game one can
bowl without getting a strike? (1 point)
4. Which pins are considered the only
true “tap” pins? (one pin for lefthanders; a different pin for righties) (2
points)
5. In order to operate quickly, the automatic pinsetter actually has more pins
used in the machine than the ten that
appear on the deck. What is the usual
number of pins each pinsetter uses? (1
point)
6. What is the most number of holes
permitted to be drilled in a regulation
bowling ball and how are they used?
(Careful, this is a tough one!) (3 points)
7. What is the number of the pin traditionally known as the “kingpin”? (1
point)
8. How many “boards” are there
across a regulation bowling lane? (1
point)
9. In normal play, what is the least
number of pins you can hit down when
hitting the headpin first, and which are
they? (two possible correct answers) (3
points)
10. Who is known as “Mr. 900” and
purportedly bowled the first 900 series?
(1 point)
11. Before the first certified and sanctioned 900 series was bowled in 1997,
what was the highest sanctioned, recognized series ever bowled? Extra points
if you know who, where, and when this

score was bowled. (4 points)
12. To date, (February, 2006) how many
sanctioned perfect 900 series have
been bowled? (1 point)
13. What is the only generally accepted
superstition in bowling? (Hint: our house
practices it!) (1 point)
14. In the time before automatic scoring, when scorekeeping was done by
hand, what was a “fence”? (1 point)
15. Before the day of automatic pinsetters, how did the bowler let the pin boy
know to set down a full rack of pins? (1
point)
16. What is the name of the governing
body for sanctioned bowling which has
now replaced the American Bowling
Congress (ABC)? (1 point)
17. What does the term “two lane courtesy” mean? (1 point)
18. What is the rarest score bowled?
(In fact, this score was recorded only
twice last year, among all the millions of
games bowled.) (1 point)
19. In the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) who holds the record for the
most “titles” (tournaments) won? Extra
points if you know how many titles he’s
won, and who is a close second, and
how many titles he has won.) (4 points)
20. What is a “Greek Church”? (1 point)
21. Whenever a bowler had a score of
111 in the 7th frame, what was (s)he
traditionally obligated to do? (1 point)
22. Throughout the history of bowling,
which frame was considered to be the
“beer” frame? (1 point)
23. What does the term “house pattern”
refer to? (1 point)
24. What is the new term for three
“open” frames in a row? (1 point)
25. Which California bowling center was
recently designated as the fifth best
house overall in the nation?
(1 point)
Initial surveys have indicated this is a
fairly tough set of questions, but do your
best because your “BQ” will be figured
“on the curve”. Total possible points:
36. Good luck!
