Young mum dies
while ‘saving her
daughter’s life’
A STRATFORD mum who died in a collision in the town
on Friday has been hailed a hero.
Rachael Martin, 29, of Elm Road, died on Western
Road after being hit by a car transporter at around
8.45am during what is believed to have been an attempt
to save her daughter’s life.
Rachael’s five-year-old daughter also suffered serious
pelvic injuries in the incident and was airlifted to Birmingham Children’s Hospital where she is still undergoing
treatment but her condition remains stable.
The driver of the car transporter and a seven-year-old
girl, believed to be Rachael’s other daughter, were uninjured in the collision.
Reacting to the news Alison Staley, manager of Willows Primary School, where Rachael was a parent, said:
“I was deeply saddened and shocked to hear about the
incident on Western Road on Friday morning.
“We are working closely with the County Council’s
Educational Psychology Service to support the whole
school community and our thoughts and prayers are
with the family and friends of all those involved.”
Flowers have been left at the scene of Friday’s collision
and tributes to Rachael have flooded in on social media.
Facebook user Chloe Smith wrote: “My best friend,
never be anyone like you. Brave, stubborn, determined,
independent, funny, caring and genuine. Miss you.
Following Friday’s collision a spokesperson from the
West Midlands Ambulance Service praised the actions of
bystanders and staff at a local car dealership for their
assistance at the scene.

A FURTHER £400,000 has been invested in
Alcester’s flood defences as part of an ongoing
scheme of improvement in the town.
Severn Trent has started the replacement of the sewage
main, connecting in the north of the town to the sewage
treatment plant at Oversley.
The work involves the provision of 1.3km of new pipe
to replace a long failing system that has burst on a
number of occasions.
The failures are due to pressures placed upon the
system by flood water entering the failing pipe work.
County Councillor Mike Gittus has driven the
improvements in the town’s flood infrastructure since the
disastrous floods of 2007.
He said: “We have been pressing Severn Trent to
undertake this work for several years after a number of
serious pipe bursts on the old system caused disruption to
the residents of Alcester and Oversley. I am very pleased
that Severn Trent are taking steps and making the investment to alleviate this longstanding problem.”
Alcester Town Councillor, Mark Cargill, said: “I live in
Oversley and the disruption caused by sewage tankers
moving waste water throughout the town each time there
has been a burst has placed a regular strain on the community. I have an engineering background and I appreciate the issues involved in these type of large scale
engineering works.”
Ben Bladen, site agent for the contract, is pleased with
the progress of the work. He confirmed that he continued
to update and liaise with residents and was on schedule to
complete the works by the start of July.

A FORMER student and a lecturer from Moreton
Morrell College are competing against the UK’s
best florists at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show
this week.
Tina Aram, who teaches
at the college, is a finalist
in the show’s Florist of the
Year competition, while
21-year-old Zoe Rowlinson, who left Moreton
Morrell last year, is competing in the Young Florist
of the Year final.
The duo have been
working on their individual
creations for the final for
the past few weeks with a
brief to create a Brazilianinspired headdress for a
carnival.
Tina said: “It’s my first
time competing at Chelsea
so it’s a bit scary but I am
looking forward to it and

THE new medical centre in Wellesbourne and the future development of the village will be on the
agenda at the next Community Forum, which takes place on Thursday, 2nd June, from 6.30pm, at
Wellesbourne Fire Station. There will be representatives there from the police, Warwickshire County
Council and Stratford District Council.

The Shakespeare and Myton Hospices
invited people to share theirs on a Before I
Die wall that was put up in Morrisons’
Stratford store for two days during Dying
Matters Week — a national campaign from
9th to 15th May to encourage people to talk
more openly about dying, death and
bereavement.
Both hospices hope the wall will also
encourage the public to consider how they
may hope to be cared for in the future.
Each year, the two care for nearly 2,000
patients and their families.
Ruth Freeman, Chief Executive at The
Myton Hospices, said: “We understand that
talking about death and dying can be an
uncomfortable topic of conversation but it
is also a very important discussion to
have.”
Angie Arnold, Chief Executive at The
Shakespeare Hospice, added: “We hope the
Before I Die wall encouraged people to
share their hopes and dreams, while recognising the ways in which our services can
help them or a loved one make plans for the
end of their life.”
Homebase in Leamington Spa and
Murcom donated the resources for the
Before I Die wall.
Persimmon Homes South Midlands
recently crowned the Shakespeare Hospice
as one its Community Champions and
awarded the organisation £1,000 to fund its
annual travel costs of its volunteer-run
therapy services.

Prisoner’s story wins
top Amnesty prize
A WARWICK School student
walked away with the top
prize in Amnesty Youth
Awards.
Max Owen entered the human
rights competition in the Further
Education Reporter category and
beat off hundreds of entrants from
across the UK.
The 17-year-old wrote about
Eritrean journalist Dawit Isaak,
who has been in prison since 2003
after being accused of being a
traitor after demanding democratic
reforms.
Amnesty International considers
him to be a prisoner of conscience,
and has called for his immediate
and unconditional release.
Max said: “I had work experience in South Africa, which is
what initially sparked my interest
in the Eritrean journalist Dawit
Isaak, and I decided to write about
it as I wanted to research further
into his case, which is what Power
of 5000 is about.”
Max’s entry was judged by a
prestigious panel, including Ritula
Shah, Susan Roth, of SOAS University of London, Alannah Lewis,
a previous winner, and The
Observer’s Kathryn Bromwich.
The Amnesty Youth Awards
challenge young people, aged
seven to 19, to explore human
rights issues through reporting,
photography, poetry, performing,
campaigning and fundraising.
Kate Allen, director of Amnesty
International UK, said: “The
awards hold a big place in the
hearts of everyone at Amnesty
International.
“In an era when we see tragedies
unfolding on our screens in places
like Syria, the Central African
Republic and Yemen, it is great to
see the next generation cares so
much.”

Trust hosts
members’
surgery
THE first Stratford Town Trust Members’ Surgery takes place this Thursday.
The Trust said it is
hosting the event to ensure
all 2,000 members could
have a say in the way it
operated, but in a less
formal environment than the
summer AGM.
It takes place at Stratford
ArtsHouse, from 12.30pm
to 3pm, and is the first of a
regular series of surgeries.
The Trust has faced fierce
criticism over the past year
over the now scrapped proposed sale of land at Rowley
Fields for housing and the
recent disposal of Mason’s Court.
Chief Executive, Helen
Munro, said: “We have
more than 2,000 members
and we want to ensure they
know their voice is very
important to us. It is from
our
membership
that
Trustees are elected — by
our members — so they
really are at the very heart of
our charity.
“This is a chance for our
members to come along and
sit down with us to give us
their input and discuss any
matters they wish.”
Anyone can be a member
of the Trust as long as they
live within the boundaries of
Stratford town.
Thursday’s surgery is
open to members only and
membership cards will need
to be shown to get in.

The
British
Motor
Museum will host the
Gaydon Festival of Transport on Sunday, while
Ragley Hall will play host
to the Classic Car Motor
Show on Sunday and
Monday.
The event at the motor
museum will feature a range
of motorised transport from
cars to fire tenders and
tanks, with plenty of family
entertainment thrown in.
The aim of the festival is
to highlight some of the best
classics ever produced and
hundreds of vehicles are
expected to take part.
Family activities will
include miniature crazy
golf, bouncy castles, falconry, a gunnery display
featuring rifle shooting,
tank firing and laser clay
pigeon shooting, plus a bug
show and face painting.
As well as entry into the
show, the admission fee also
includes entry into the
newly-refurbished British
Motor Museum and the
new Collections Centre.
Tickets for the show cost
£10 in advance or £14 on
the day for adults, £6 in
advance or £9 on the day for
children and £39 on the day
for a family. Family activities are included in the
admission price except laser
clay pigeon shooting and
bouncy castles.
At Ragley Hall more than
600 vintage, classic, American, kit and custom cars
and
motorcycles
are
expected to take part in the
Classic Motor Show.
New for 2016, the show
will feature an interactive
arena where visitors can
find out more about the
vehicles, as well as listen to
live music and classic memories from the 1940’s to
1980’s.
Jayne Darling, a professional singer, will be performing a collection of
vintage classics throughout
the weekend.
Several car clubs will be
in attendance including the
Metropolitan Owners’ Club
and Austin 10 Driver Club
celebrating the history of
local car production at
Longbridge.

Twelve amateur jockeys raised a total of £20,700 for the Air Ambulance Service at Warwick Racecourse.

TWELVE amateur jockeys raised a total of £20,700
for the Air Ambulance Service at Warwick’s Ardencote Think Pink Ladies’ Day last week.
This was the third meeting
of the course’s May Racing
Carnival, featuring a sevenrace card, together with the
Jockey Club Challenge
Charity Race, supported by
Concept Furniture.
With Topolski unable to
run and Morestead getting
loose before the start, ten
horses tackled the one mile
and five furlong trip and it
was Dove Mountain, trained
in Ireland by Gordon Elliott,
who led all the way in the
hands of Molly Dingwall,
who is the north-west
regional business development executive for Jockey
Club Racecourses.
Best of the Warwickshiretrained horses was Boss Des
Mottes from the Dan Skelton
stable, who finished runnerup for rider Ella Mahon.
Course favourite Dormouse,
trained at Wilmcote by
Anabel Murphy and ridden
by Warwick’s business development executive Sheryl
Caswell, came in fifth.

fund elephant sanctuary
THE Galana Wildlife
Conservancy is hosting
a 200 person dinner and
auction to raise money
to fund an elephant
sanctuary in Kenya.

The Galana Wildlife Conservancy borders Tsavo
East National Park in Kenya
and consists of a 60,000
acre wilderness haven for
some of the most renowned
and rarest African wildlife
species, most notably the
African Bull Elephant.
The conservancy serves
as a crucial buffer between
Tsavo East National Park
and Kulalu Ranches which
are managed by the Agricultural Development Corporation (ADC).
Since 2008 the conservancy have been working
with local communities,
international NGOs and the
ADC to preserve this vital
habitat and the amazing
creatures that rely on it.

farmer,
Sue
Aldersey, who is helping
organise the event, said: “I

Fundraising in
memory of Tash

FRIENDS of a Warwick woman who sadly lost her
battle with cancer earlier this year after raising
nearly £60,000 to fund medical research, have
vowed to carry on fundraising in her memory.
They are hosting a charity
ball in her honour at the
newly-refurbished Coventry
Hilton on Saturday, 25th
June, with the aim of
boosting funds by a further
£15,000.
Natasha Fermor, also
known as Tash, set up the
charity Tash’s Bashes in
2013, after learning that her
breast cancer had spread.
The pinnacle of the
fundraising
success
achieved by Tash and her
friends came at the charity’s
first ball last summer which
saw 200 dinner guests raise
nearly £15,000.
Added to the money
raised by monthly events
such as skydives, walks,
head shaving, marathons
and quizzes, the total raised
reached £59,000, which was
£9,000 more than Tash had
aimed to achieve.
This enabled Tash’s
Bashes to fund a researcher
for a year to carry out
groundbreaking research
into secondary breast cancer
at St Bart’s Medical Institute
in London.
Before Tash died in January, her friends agreed to
host another ball with the
aim of funding additional
vital research into metastasis, the spread of cancer
between organs, at the
Francis Crick Institute in
London. The evening will be
hosted by local Free Radio
DJ, JD and The Rockabellas
will be providing vintage
swing musical entertainment
during the evening.
A silent and a live auction
will also be running during
the evening.
Tickets to the black tie
event are £45 each and
include a three-course
dinner and drinks reception.

New car sales record 13-year April high
NEW car registrations in
the UK made a modest gain
of two per cent in April,
according to figures published by the Society of
Motor Manufacturers and
Traders (SMMT).
Some 189,505 cars were
registered in the month —
the most in April since
2003, when 194,312 new
vehicles found homes.
As in March, the market
growth in April was led by
the fleet and business sectors, where respective
increases of 6.1 per cent and
2.8 per cent counterbalanced a 2.5 per cent fall in
private registrations.
Meanwhile, demand for
both petrol and diesel
models remains high. Registrations of petrol cars
increased 3.4 per cent in
April, while diesel saw a
slight 0.6 per cent decline.
Following the trend set in
the first three months of the
year, uptake of alternative
fuel vehicles jumped by
more than a quarter as
buyers looked to reduce
emissions and running
costs.
April’s performance puts
registrations for 2016 to
date 4.4 per cent up on the
same period last year. It follows a bumper March in
which more than 518,000
cars were registered — the
second-biggest month on
record.

pre-season plans
STRATFORD Town have confirmed eight preseason friendlies for this summer, including
games against Kidderminster Harriers and
National League new boys Solihull Moors.
Harriers, whose 11-year stay in the top tier of nonleague football ended last month following the club’s relegation, will head to the DCS Stadium on Saturday, 9th July
(3pm).
Town then host Worcester City three days later on
Tuesday, 12th July, ahead of an away game at Evesham
United on Saturday, 16th July.
Stratford head to Coleshill Town to take on manager
Carl Adams’ former club on Tuesday, 19th July, before
they are back at the DCS Stadium for friendlies against
Stourbridge and Solihull Moors on 23rd and 26th July
respectively.
Adams’ men end their pre-season with two away fixtures. A trip to Bromsgrove Sporting awaits on Saturday,
30th July, before they wrap it up on 2nd August against
Northern League Premier Division side Sutton Coldfield
Town.
Pre-season fixtures: July 9: Kidderminster Harriers - home
(3pm). July 12: Worcester City - home (3pm). July 16: Evesham

Match is abandoned
STRATFORD Cricket Club’s Birmingham and District
League Division Two match against Shifnal was abandoned as a result of heavy rain.
The league’s highest individual score of the weekend
came from Shifnal’s Steve Leach, who hit 128 not out from
132 balls.
Jack McIver chipped in with 52 and Shifnal’s total of
240 for four had an imposing look about it before the match
was called off.
