It was good to see so many parents at the Welcome Evening on Tuesday. This is an
informal occasion when parents new to the school, plus parents of pupils in Reception
and Year 3, have the opportunity to meet each other and to chat to staff. I am very much looking forward to Stokesley Show tomorrow
– do come along and say hello to us on the ‘Yarm’ stand, and do bring your friends and family too! We are
hopeful of some fine weather for the Show, which is one of the major annual events in North Yorkshire.
Hot on the heels of the Show is our Autumn Open Morning, which this year takes place on Saturday 3rd
October. More details to follow!
Safety first
We work hard to keep our pupils safe whilst being
mindful of educating them about risk and its
management. For this reason, we do ask for your
support on all school sites to help keep children
safe at all times. This is why no vehicles should

Remember, remember the 6th November!
Well, not quite how the old rhyme goes, but 6th November is the date of
the very popular annual Social Committee Firework Party. Due to the
building work at the Senior School, the Firework Party is being held this
year at Tall Trees Hotel, Green Lane. Tickets will not be on sale on the
night itself, and must all be pre-ordered by half term (October 16th).
They are priced at £10/adult and £6 for children aged 3 and over. This
price includes food. Thank you to all those of you who signed up for
tickets last Friday at the ‘Tea in the Gazebo’ event – more than 100 have
now been sold, which is a great start. See the advert and the order form
in this week’s newsletter, or contact your Year rep or the Social
Committee direct. Don’t miss it – order your tickets now!
CARS ON PREP SITE
Thank you for observing the ‘no vehicles on site’ request. A few
parents are, however, still driving onto the Prep site to collect
children from clubs or After School Care. Please do not drive onto
the site thus compromising children’s safety.

Did you know? The Prep School has one teacher for every 12 pupils and
within Key Stage 2, we have an equal number of male and female teachers?
Compare this with local state schools and see the Yarm difference!

YEAR 5: ROBINWOOD 2009
As promised in last week’s Phoenix Flier, here is a small selection of photographs
from Year 5’s residential visit to the Robinwood Activity Centre, which took
place at the very beginning of term. More photographs are on display in the Year
5 form rooms, and on the board outside Mrs Hewitt’s office. Do take a look! You
might spot some of the challenging activities, such as Trapeze, Giant Swing,
Zipwire, Nightline, Archery (Mrs T’s favourite!), Canoeing, Caving, Climbing,
Streamwalk, Obstacle Course, Team Challenge and Dragon’s Quest – not
forgetting the perennial favourite, Piranha Pool! Well done to all the children and
a big thank you to Mrs White, Mrs Mavin, Miss Wilson and Mr Taylor, who, like
me, enjoyed taking such a responsive year group on their trip.

I learnt to be
cautious around fire
and electricity.
Francesca 6S
I have learnt that you have to
make tough decisions in life.
Toby 6S
I liked the road safety room
because there was a funny man
who didn’t know anything at all
and we had to correct him.
Georgia 6P
I liked the electricity room when
we watched the videos and the
man turned the volt machine
from 11,000 to 20,000 volts. Did
you know it only takes 50 volts to
kill you?
Rosie 6P
I learnt at Crucial Crew that
nobody should fly a kite or
put a fishing rod next to
electric wires because
electricity can jump gaps.
I was amazed to find
out that if you’re 16 or
over you can be sent
to jail.
Jacob 6S
Josh 6S
Crucial Crew was very good
because it was teaching us what
to do in an emergency but in a
fun way, so Year 5 should look
forward to it.

Furthermore, 64 candidates entered Associated Board of the Royal

class lessons. Amy Sotnick gained a distinction in her Grade 3
examination and 3 candidates (Harriet Scott, Freya Gittens and Daniel
Woodward) gained their Grade 4 examinations. Grade 4 is an excellent
achievement for a Prep School aged pupil as Grades 4-5 are the
national average for GCSE music pupils.

On Sunday mum took me to the circus. I am going to
tell you all about it. The ring master was the boss of
the show, he wore a shiny black top hat and a bright red
coat with long tails. His job was to introduce the acts.
There were many different acts, some of them made my
eyes pop out and made mum hold her breath. There
were elastic people, funny clowns, balancing acts, high
acrobatics, motorbike riders and great magic.
The music at the circus made everything jolly and we
clapped to the music for about an hour. Our favourite
music was ‘When the Saints go Marching in’ which was
played by a clown on his trumpet.
I competed in the LA Academy of dance and
performing arts festival on Sunday 6th September and
successfully came first in my novice character solo as
Snow White out of 12 people. Well done me!
