There are several icons that might appear to you when editing your syllabus. ○ ○ This icon (intended to look like a quill or pen) indicates that you can edit this element. This icon indicates that the item can be deleted. ○ These icons indicate that the element can be reordered (moved up and down in the order presented on the syllabus). ○ Note: There are elements included in all syllabi that should not be altered or edited by instructors. These include UCLA Extension institutional policies, contact information for program departments and UCLA Extension’s Office of Instructional Enhancement, and some of the course policies. 2 Updated: 03/17/15 General Structure of Syllabus Elements Concourse provides a few of levels for organizing the elements of your syllabus: ● Syllabus ○ Meeting Times ■ Add meeting time ○ Contact Information ■ Contact entry ● Office Hours ○ Description ○ Objectives ○ Outcomes ○ Materials ■ Add Book ■ Add Other ○ Deliverables ■ Add Deliverable ○ Evaluation ■ Add Criteria ■ Add Breakdown ○ Course Policies ■ Individual course policies ○ Institutional Policies (instructors cannot edit these) ○ Schedule ■ Add Schedule Entry As depicted above, Level 1 is the entire syllabus. The syllabus is comprised of the Level 2 elements (e.g., Meeting Times, Contact Information, Description, Objectives, Outcomes, etc.). Some of these allow you to offer even more granular information about that particular element. For example, within Meeting Times, you can add multiple meeting time entries, depending on whether you have multiple classroom locations or if you have class meetings that change from week to week. Similarly, with Materials, you can add individual book entries for multiple required or optional texts and/or equipment. These details comprise the larger category (Meeting Times and Materials, respectively). 3 Updated: 03/17/15 Updating Your Syllabus Schedule The schedule in Concourse refers to what you might know as the weekly outline or weekly schedule. This section of the syllabus delineates the breakdown of the course by weekly module (or some other unit or interval), coupled with the topic for the module and any associated deliverables (or items that students should be turning in for instructor feedback and/or grading). For working with your syllabus schedule in Concourse, you have the ability to add and edit a) Schedule Entries, as well as b) general Notes about the schedule. A. Adding and Editing Schedule Entries 1. Scroll to the bottom of your syllabus. The schedule will always appear there. The following depicts an empty schedule. 2. Click on “Add Schedule Entry.” 3. In the popup dialog box, enter the information for the schedule entry. In general, one weekly module should be given its own schedule entry. Click “Save” when you have added all information for your schedule entry. 4 Updated: 03/17/15 5 Updated: 03/17/15 4. The following is an example of what might be included in the schedule entry. 6 Updated: 03/17/15 5. When you have completed your schedule entry, the information that you added will appear in your syllabus like this: 6. Repeats steps 2 and 3 for each schedule entry (or weekly module). Concourse will place each newly added schedule entry below the entries that have previously been added. 7 Updated: 03/17/15 B. Adding and Editing General Notes about the Schedule Sometimes, instructors like to add a general note to the schedule to add further information to the schedule as a whole. For example, you might want to add a statement that the instructor reserves the right to update or adjust the schedule depending on the progress of the class. This can be done easily by clicking on the quill/pen icon that appears beside Schedule in your syllabus. Once you have clicked on the icon, Concourse will display a popup dialog box that prompts you to enter your general notes about your course schedule. 8 Updated: 03/17/15 Remember to click “Save” when your notes are ready to be added to your syllabus! 9 Updated: 03/17/15
