FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES
Building a Research Strategy for Next Generation Green Buildings Workshop, March 25, 2014
Focused on the future of learning.
Syllabus Projections
•  Students waiting to be notified when BSc.
(Arch) opens: 275
•  Over 1000 students graduate from
architectural technology programs in
Canada each year
•  Projected Enrollment by 2023: 290
Enrollments (2023 Projected)
Research
•  On March 25th the RAIC Centre for Architecture
at Athabasca University hosted a research
workshop to develop a research strategy for next
generation green buildings
•  It was attended by 50 of the country’s top
architects, engineers, building product
manufacturers and researchers representing all
regions of the country
•  It was agreed that we would develop a
mechanism for us to move forward together
Broadly Experienced Foreign
Architects (BEFA)
•  Every year some 30 foreign-trained
architects are directed to our professional
practice courses (ARCH 645 and ARCH
655)
•  More than 100 have taken ARCH 645
since 2011
•  This number is expected to grow as the
RAIC’s BEFA program does
General Interest Stream
•  Many students have expressed interest in
a general interest stream of architectural
studies
•  It would be clear that this would not lead
to licensing through the Syllabus
•  It would also provide a means for
students who cannot continue to be
employed by an architect to still attain a
degree
General Interest Stream
•  One student is already taking a course
with the Centre to improve their GPA for
entry into a Masters program of
Architecture
•  An NAAB student has registered for ENG
255 & ARCH 645
Making the Most of the Online
World
•  Virtual research institute in collaboration
with industry
•  Repositories of Architectural Learning
Objects
•  Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC’s)
•  Grant from Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation
•  Apps
•  Virtual Design Labs

Summary
•  The Syllabus is not a fast-track or short-cut to
licensing
•  BUT, it does provide invaluable work
experience
•  The new structure provides more options for
more students
•  The innovative, online delivery mechanism
holds significant opportunities for the profession
