An Alternative Pathway: The RAIC Syllabus constitutes an alternative path to professional licensure as an architect in Canada 2. Work/Study: In the Syllabus program students can keep working while studying 3. Upgrading: The Syllabus is a pathway for working students to upgrade their educational and professional credentials 4. Syllabus Curriculum Sequence Academic Courses at Athabasca Key Features of the Academic Courses 1. Flexibility (1): At the Centre students can work on their academic courses anytime, anywhere 2. Flexibility (2): At the Centre students can start a course in any month of the year 3. Accessible: Through its Learner Support Services Athabasca University is making architectural education more accessible and inclusive 4. Syllabus Projections • Students waiting to be notified when BSc. (Arch) opens: 275 • Over 1000 students graduate from architectural technology programs in Canada each year • Projected Enrollment by 2023: 290 Enrollments (2023 Projected) Research • On March 25th the RAIC Centre for Architecture at Athabasca University hosted a research workshop to develop a research strategy for next generation green buildings • It was attended by 50 of the country’s top architects, engineers, building product manufacturers and researchers representing all regions of the country • It was agreed that we would develop a mechanism for us to move forward together Broadly Experienced Foreign Architects (BEFA) • Every year some 30 foreign-trained architects are directed to our professional practice courses (ARCH 645 and ARCH 655) • More than 100 have taken ARCH 645 since 2011 • This number is expected to grow as the RAIC’s BEFA program does General Interest Stream • Many students have expressed interest in a general interest stream of architectural studies • It would be clear that this would not lead to licensing through the Syllabus • It would also provide a means for students who cannot continue to be employed by an architect to still attain a degree General Interest Stream • One student is already taking a course with the Centre to improve their GPA for entry into a Masters program of Architecture • An NAAB student has registered for ENG 255 & ARCH 645 Making the Most of the Online World • Virtual research institute in collaboration with industry • Repositories of Architectural Learning Objects • Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC’s) • Grant from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation • Apps • Virtual Design Labs Apps: The Idea Calculator for Architects Source: http://www.fastepp.com/index.php/en/concept-app A new free iPhone app giving architects the tools to visualize their structural concepts at the early stages of design.
