Balaam`s Donkey
The voice of the students of Ambrose University College DECEMBER 2010 Balaam’s Donkey An ‘Advent’ageous Read Around the World Christmas On Friday December 3rd, the Ambrose community was treated to a night of music and fellowship as everyone from the musical side of Ambrose put on an “Around the World” Christmas concert in the Lion’s Den! The Den was packed with people young and old with ears eagerly anticipating the music to tran- scend them from this plane to a heavenly one, and they were not disappointed. Some of my personal highlights from the evening were when the community singers got right into their songs and started clapping away or how they broke into whispers during another song. The best thing, however, was when the 2nd Jazz Ensemble did “Winter Wonderland”. I could not help but dance in my seat a bit. It was a lot of fun! The guitar ensemble also was a delight to see and hear. They brought guitarists in from every discipline, but they were all united by wearing Christmas sweaters. The last thing I would like to mention about the Christmas Concert is how it brought the school and community together. Intertwined between all the different amazing singers that our ears had the pleasure of hearing were opportunities for the audience to sing along! I mean, I love singing even though I am terrible at it, but it did not matter as we all sang our hearts out to some classic Christmas carols. All in all it was just a fun filled evening and based on what I experienced that night, I would love to go to more Ambrose musical events. -Joshua Aitkenhead CONTENTS: Christmas 2 Entertainment 3 Confessions, Story 4 Athletics 5 Exposition, Yearbook 6 Campus Stuff 7 Logic Puzzle, Quotable Quotes, Editor’s Note 8 Hong Kong Holidays Final Exam Advice These tips were collected from several Ambrose Students. Hope they can help a bit! - study - start early, if you’re reading this now, you should’ve started weeks ago - Don’t grow disheartened and think you can’t possibly learn it all. Stop getting down on yourself and Go! (just jump in, the beginning is a very good place to start if it’s accumulative) - don’t sacrifice sleep for studying the night before - try not to take excessive amounts of naps whilst trying to study - don’t stress (relaxing music?) - throw things - write stuff out over and over - say it out loud – walk around, recite it to yourself - teach someone else, (even if it is a stuffed animal, or your cat) - eat chocolate - eat bananas - eat almonds, drink water - eat a good breakfast the day of, must include FRUIT - if you need sugar, try honey. - Take breaks, and when you do, make them purposeful and FULLY DISENGAGE, get out of the environment, do something completely different (a 10 minute facebook break is not gonna be effective when you’re on your laptop all day studying) - set up a schedule for yourself, 2 hours on, ½ off. Or 45 mins on, 15 off. - Set a goal and reward yourself (ex. Read all notes tonight, then take rest of night off) cont’d pg 7 In Hong Kong, We don’t get any snow for Christmas. We send Christmas cards to family and friends, many of which are homemade u s i n g Chinese craft techniques. Poinsettias flowers and Nativity scenes decorate homes, churches and public places, as well as big red and gold letters from the Chinese alphabet and decorated streamers and paper chains. In Hong Kong, Santa Claus is known as “Sing Daan Lou Yan” (Christmas Old Man) in Cantonese or “Sheng Dan Lo Ren” in Mandarin. Every year in Hong Kong there is a ‘Winterfest’. It’s a huge winter party that involves the shops, theme parks and other attractions in Hong Kong. cont’d next page... 2 Christmas Hong Kong Christmas cont. A Goat for Christmas Winterfest is from t h e 2 8 t h of November to the 4th of January and includes a giant Christmas tree in Statue Square, a sparkling castle at Disneyland Hong Kong and a forest of 200 Christmas trees and an ice skating extravaganza at Ocean Park! We also have a lot of Christmas light decorations. Real Christmas tress (evergreens) are hard to find in Hong Kong; therefore, we make Christmas trees with light. For Christmas dinner we have hot pot instead of turkey. There is a pot w i t h chicken b r o t h and you have raw beef, raw chicken , vegetables etc. You cook it all on the table and eat it with different sauces.. Families will have gatherings and celebrate Christmas together. We often exchange gifts and go on a bus tour to see and enjoy the Christmas lights everywhere. - Suyi Chan 10 Things To Do Over Christmas 1) Bake - everybody loves cookies! 2) Watch old family videos - Who wouldn’t want to watch themselves getting a brand new puppy, complete with bowl cut! 3) Decorate your house - C’mon, the bathroom doesn’t have any lights in it! Where are the lights? 4) Make gifts - nothing like homemade gifts on a college student budget! 5) Go Shopping - If you aren’t into #4, or like to catch those post Christmas sales. 6) Put on a talent show with your siblings and cousins - Remember the good old days when you lip synced Backstreet Boys into your hairbrush? Time to do it again, and ya never know, one day it might become part of #2 Christmas time is right around the corner. I know, it shocked me too when I realized that there was only sixteen days till Christmas. And that means even less shopping days. It can be hard to find that right gift, you know the one that catches them by complete surprise, and is better than anything that they could have imagined. But when it comes down to it, what do we really need? Seriously, ask yourself: Do I really need anything? I know we don’t need another person to tell you all about how Christmas is not about commercialism. We have fun little sayings like “Jesus, is the reason for the season” to help us remember that. If this by chance is a new message to you, go watch “A Charlie Brown Christmas” and maybe that will help you figure it out. The point being, we don’t need to give each other and our families more junk than we already have. Maybe it i s time that we become good stewards of our money and do something helpful with it. There really are multiple ways to get somebody a gift and help others in need. Being a Nazarene, I am well affiliated with Nazarene Compassionate Ministries Canada (NCMC). NCMC offers a gift catalogue where you can purchase things that families need in developing countries for relatively cheap prices. For the past 4 years, my brother and I have each received goats, chickens, and cows for Christmas. A pair of goats will run you about $100, but think about what they provide. Milk can be a costly thing in developing countries, and because of this many families just do without. Goats can provide milk for a family, as well as meat. Maybe goats just don’t do it for you. What about chickens? Two hens, and a rooster will only cost you $50 and this will provide a family with a steady diet of protein from the eggs, as well as the opportunity for the family to make a business out of it by raising chickens. It really is not a lot of money, and it goes a long way. Take the time and seriously consider it this Christmas. A new video game cost $60-$70, and we buy them without hesitation, so why the hesitation? Go check it out. See for yourself what you can do for families around the world, as well as for your family. If this is something that means something to you I would also consider checking out the Canada Foodgrains Bank (which NCMC has partnered up with). CFB has a program that is set up where every dollar is matched 4:1. This means when you give $1, it really equals $5. These are incredible opportunities to be a part of; give a gift that will make a difference. Skating? If not, try it out! If you are an expert at them all, try out snow golf! (It is a real sport!) 8) Do a good deed - Whether it is shoveling your elderly neighbour’s walkway or taking your younger siblings out to give your parents a break, doing nice things makes you feel good inside. 9) Send Howard Wilson an email and tell him what you are doing! - He loves hearing from us, heck, he made a contest out of it this summer! hwilson@ ambrose.edu* 10) Get ahead with reading your new textbooks! - Okay, nobody in their right mind is going to want to do this, but I thought I would throw it in because I am not going to be able to stop reading for my Matt McCabe and Alex Sanderson classes! (I’ve seen the booklist Matt!) *note: There is no contest over the Christmas break, but if you do something cool this break, I am sure that Howard would be very interested! -Kristen Lynne Entertainment Christmas Playlist I can appreciate that not everyone is as gung-ho on Bing Crosby jams as the rest of the Christmas enthusiasts, so I’ve compiled a playlist that isn’t completely supercharged with flaming chestnuts, Jack Frost’s cannibalistic tendencies and mom getting jiggy with Santa: one that will hopefully be of use to you during preparations for the “F” word swiftly approaching us. I hope everyone is getting excited for an extravagant evening of delicious food and fantastic entertainment. Months of planning have gone into this banquet with the hopes of giving everyone an evening to enjoy the Christmas season with their friends and take a break from the chaos of school. It is a joy for me, as the VP of Social Events, to serve our student body through running this event. As you all should know (through the advertisements and information on your tickets) the Christmas Banquet is also teaming up with two organizations in Calgary: Calgary Interfaith Food Bank and Inn from the Cold. Calgary Interfaith Food Bank serves countless of people in Calgary who struggle with hunger. Their mission statement is: “We are a charitable organization dedicated to the gathering and distributing of quality emergency foods to those in need.” Inn from the Cold assists homeless families in Calgary by offering them shelter and support in the midst of their crisis. Inn from the Cold’s Vision Statement is “A community where no family is homeless.” We as a student body have been blessed with an opportunity to support these phenomenal groups and share the true beauty of Christmas with people who are facing some un- Have a wonderful, blessed Christmas and a smashing New Year!!! - Erin Case imaginable grief this holiday season. Remember that you are required to bring TWO non-perishable food items, along with your ticket, for entry into the banquet. The food donated will all go directly to the Calgary Interfaith Food Bank. Also make sure to remember that we will have a few different items being auctioned off during the evening (specific details about those items can be found on the paper stapled to your ticket). All the money raised from that auction will be donated to Inn from the Cold in support of their efforts to end homelessness in Calgary. It is our privilege to join with these service organizations as we celebrate the Christmas season at Ambrose! See you all on December 10th, I absolutely cannot wait! J Sincerely, Meredith Buschart VP of Social Events To find out more about Calgary Interfaith Food Bank and Inn From the Cold check out their websites: www.innfromthecold.org & www.calgaryfoodbank.com or look for them on Facebook! 3 Merry Carol This month’s focus hymn takes on the Christmas theme and acts as an excellent reminder of the peace and restoration that came to our world as a result of Christ’s birth. Read through this carefully and just really reflect on what is being said here. It’s not just another festive jingle to get us hyped up on hitting the malls or getting all revved for the holiday traditions. This is all about the true reason for the season- and that is what’s worth getting hyped up about!! 1. God rest ye merry, gentlemen, Let nothing you dismay, Remember Christ our Saviour Was born on Christmas Day To save us all from Satan’s power When we were gone astray: O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy,w O tidings of comfort and joy. 2. In Bethlehem, in Israel, This blessed Babe was born, And laid within a manger Upon this blessèd morn, The which His Mother Mary Did nothing take in scorn: O tidings ... 3. From God our heavenly Father A blessèd angel came, And unto certain shepherds Brought tidings of the same, How that in Bethlehem was born The Son of God by Name: O tidings ... 4. The shepherds at those tidings Rejoicèd much in mind, And left their flocks a-feeding In tempest, storm and wind, And went to Bethlehem straightway, This blessèd Babe to find: O tidings ... 5. But when to Bethlehem they came, Whereat this Infant lay, They found Him in a manger, Where oxen feed on hay; His mother Mary kneeling, Unto the Lord did pray: O tidings ... 6. Now to the Lord sing praises, All you within this place, And with true love and brotherhood Each other now embrace; This holy tide of Christmas All others doth deface: O tidings ... - 1833 unknown author 4 Confessions of an Extrovert 2 Have you ever wanted a reset button? How cool would it be if we were going through something and we realized that all we needed to do was press the button. Just reach into our pocket and Voila! We can start over again! Oh MAN! In the last few months of being here this semester I could have used that thing a bunch of times… Oh father time and your no going backness… So how does an extroverted guy like me deal with my own dumbness or “not quite gettingitness”? To be frankly honest, not very well all the time, but there are cases where I’ve realized an error in my ways and decided to pull a 180 and get away from it, even when the situation is already almost too sticky to do that. Obviously this General Studies student is no professional when it comes to… well anything at all really, but I have a few things to say: (I know right... Chris Hennink wants to say something, -WEIRD!) When I’ve found myself in a pickle (the Vlasic kind) where the reset button needs to be pressed, (no matter how late in the thick) I realize there is nothing I can do but change the way I’m handling myself. I take a look at a few things, such as Pride. Am I just protecting my pride and worried about the consequences of my dumbness? Sometimes you deserve a little cut down…I know I do all the time. Has this pickle got here by itself or has it been a variety of things that are just coming to a close, and finally is it just time to stop the madness. For this extravertor, when it’s time to stop the madness, I realize I should have pressed The Wall - Part III a short story by Andrew Love Continued from last month.... “You’re still not completely safe,” the green-eyed man warned me. “They’ll soon notice that you escaped.” I stared quizzically at the construction workers, still laying down brick after brick, though now the bricks and the wall were blue. “What would’ve happened if we’d been any later?” My supposed rescuer (though from what, I still didn’t know) gave me a glance that seemed to say “Isn’t it obvious?” After a few awkward seconds, he explained, “They just completed a layer. Now the entire wall is higher than the maximum height you can climb over.” “Wait, so why did it turn blue, then?” He didn’t answer. He simply pulled a small red fish out of his pocket, probably a herring, and took a large bite off of its head, all the while staring directly at me. It was unsettling, to say the least. It was then that I finally worked out what he said earlier. “What does this wall have to do with me?” “Simple,” he said. “What is the purpose of a wall?” “Uh… it keeps people out?” “It goes both ways. A wall keeps people outside from coming in, but it also keeps people inside from going out. Such is the case here.” “Wait a minute. Didn’t we just go around the wall? What’s there to keep me from going around it again?” “Sure, you could,” he told me. “But you won’t.” the button a looong time before this point, and that from now on, the way I deal with things should be entirely different. I need to not let words of apology or regretfulness take over. Instead, my actions from this moment on need to show who I really am, a child of Christ, who’s realized his wrong and is pulling the e-break to make that 180 and go the right way. It’s a tough thing to do as an extrovert because you are around people so much that they will notice that you are trying to do something differently. That’s the hardest part I think: starting to rebuild publicly from the rubble of what’s been brought down privately. One thing I’m truly glad for is Jesus and the grace that he brings, I thank Him for getting me out of the small problems (though seemingly large at the time) I get myself into, and the major issues where the only way I can get out is by his powerful hand. How GREAT is our God! So basically I just wanted to share a little more into the mind of Chris Hennink the extravertor, who falls short (yes…I know I’m short, I’m talking the other kinda of short…smart aleck) quite a bit and messes up, I’m sorry… I guess we all do, that’s kinda annoying… But OH Amazing Grace, How sweet the sound! Well friends, Have a great Christmas season, and remember to Stay away from those petty things, and continue to avoid petting those sweaty things... -Chris Hennink Confused, I asked, “What do you mean by that, Benjamin?” Why did I just call him Benjamin? It just slipped out. Of all the possible names anyone could have, why did I say Benjamin? “You obviously don’t understand how the wall works,” the man who may or may not be named Benjamin told me. “And by the way, just plain Ben is fine.” So his name was Benjamin after all. But that wasn’t important now. The fact is, I didn’t know what was going on, and Ben wasn’t helping, either. “What do you mean, I don’t know how the wall works? A wall’s a wall, isn’t it? Are you trying to tell me that there’s some kind of elaborate plot involved in this wall? “Besides, why do I even have to listen to you? You just barge into my house one night, drag me out of bed, tell me I’m in danger, drag me through the streets, all to look at some wall they’re building? And all I know about you is that your name’s Ben, which was a total fluke, and that you’re not human, so you say. How do I know you’re not pulling my leg? Or that you’re not schizo, or one of those nerds who got too much into their games? Well? How can I trust you?” Ben said nothing. He just kept staring at me. “You could at least tell me who you are.” The seconds passed. Neither of us moved. Finally, Ben gave a heavy sigh, looked downward, and said, “I’m the man you could’ve become.” Athletics 5 Volleyball Season Comes to a Close This past month has seen a fair amount of Ambrose athletic action. Nearly three weeks ago our men’s and women’s volleyball teams traveled to Olds for the ACAL finals. Although the trip was about an hour from Calgary, all of our Lions fans were able to watch the games online. The men took the floor first on Friday and made easy work of the Portage Voyageurs. The women were next as they battled Olds. Having traded wins during the regular season the game was up for grabs. Olds won the first two sets, but our girls fought back to win the third in convincing fashion, but could not hold on as Olds won their third game to move to the finals. In the bronze medal game our girls were up against the Prairie Pilots. This was not a huge challenge as our Lions dominated all three sets to take the bronze medal. The men also battled the Pilots but this was for the championship. The Pilots surprised everybody by taking the first set. This woke our boys up as they picked up their game and dominated the next three. Dan Reid said, “It was our defense that won us that game.” Thanks to everyone who came out for the championship. The following weekend both our men’s and women’s teams traveled to Saskatoon, SK for the Western Final. After the long drive and a number of games in a short amount of time our teams finished 5th and 4th. It was a solid season for both our volleyball teams, thanks to all the athletes for putting in such a great effort, it was fun to watch. You wouldn’t have known that basketball doesn’t really start till second semester with all the games that have been going on. This past weekend our men’s team played the University of Lethbridge’s Junior Varsity team. Although our boys were down by a lot early on, they turned it around and ended up losing by only ten, 82-72. On the women’s side, practices have been going on for quite some time. Both team and individual training sessions have been looking promising. The first women’s exhibition game is this Saturday against St. Mary’s at 7pm. Come on out and cheer our girls to victory. In hockey news our boys have been improving more and more. Unfortunately this has yet to produce another win, but has generated some nail biters. Games against the Pillagers (5th place) and Zig Zags (8th place) were one goal losses, with the final goal coming in the final five minutes of the game. Thanks to our faithful fans who continue to make it out for every game. As we go into Christmas let’s hope that our athletes don’t eat too much turkey, considering we still have half the hockey season, and both the Basketball and Futsal seasons left. Games of the month: men’s volleyball gold medal game, and women’s bronze medal game. -Jon Pettigrew 6 The Importance of Listening to Expositional Preaching 2 Timothy 4:1-2 “I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.” Firstly my apologies for the break from my series of Foundation articles, I will return to them next semester when there is sufficient time to deal with the subjects properly. Secondly, why expository preaching? What is it anyway? Mark Dever (of the website 9Marks of A Healthy Church) states, "An expositional sermon takes the main point of a passage of Scripture, makes it the main point of the sermon, and applies it to life today." The text is not merely a spring-board to the preacher's points or a supporting proof-text. The Church, corporately and individually, needs God's Word. Pastors need to preach in an expositional manner and the rest of us need to listen to this type of preaching for the following reasons: Expositional preaching most glorifies God it lets God speak and it humbles man. God has spoken to us in 66 books and though He may not have given them directly to our culture 1 Cor 10:11 says, “Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.” Expositional preaching reveals the whole counsel of God and the fullness of His character instead of teachings favoured by the preacher; the preacher must give the main points of the text, regardless of how comfortably it may sit with himself or the congregation. Glory is given to God in that he cannot lean upon his own giftings and instead must seek God to fulfil 2 Tim 2:15 which says, “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.” The preacher then, as John, can say that Christ must increase and he must decrease. By systematically expounding the word the preacher demonstrates that man does not live by bread alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. The preacher must then also rely on God's Spirit to work through His word. When God's Word is preached, God is sought to have His word rightly divide, and God alone works through His word. Expositional preaching leaves no room for the arm of the flesh, no room for boasting, and only opportunity to praise and thank God for the opportunity to be His mouthpiece. Expositional preaching is necessary "because God’s Word is what convicts, converts, builds up, and sanctifies God’s people (9Marks, Heb. 4:12; 1 Pet. 1:23; 1 Thess. 2:13; Jn. 17:17)." There are several passages that describe the work of the Holy Spirit as regeneration (i.e. Being born again), like in John 3 and Titus 3:5, and as sanctification, in Romans 8:14. But the Bible also clearly states that we are born again by the word of God (1 Peter 1:23) and we are sanctified by God's word (John 17:17). The work of the Spirit and the work of God's word are presented as the same. This led the reformers to say, "The Spirit never speaks apart from the word and the word never speaks apart from the Spirit." It is through His word's that God has chosen to save and sanctify us and we must submit to His will, for as John Calvin said, "As soon as men depart, even in the smallest degree from God’s Word, they cannot preach anything but falsehoods, vanities, impostures, errors, and deceits." To caution, all of this does not imply that it is out of place to hold Bible studies or other services in a church that may study doctrines, Bible characters, or even Christian biographies. These studies are excellent opportunities for growth but they cannot be the central focus of a church’s teaching—which should be expositional preaching—for to do otherwise is in effect to say that God's word is not quite sufficient for God's people and instead must be replaced with something else. Therefore let us preach and listen to expositional preaching because Scripture alone, “is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17)." -Jordan Los Calendar Events December January 10- Christmas Banquet 13-17 Final Exams 17 -The Wise Men’s Wives BEd Presentation 19 - Res move out by noon 25- Christmas Day! 10 - 9am Res Move-in 12- Classes Begin 14 - Upperclassmen Banff Trip Yearbook Bit Dearest Fellow Students, YOUR 2010/11 Ambrose Undergrad Yearbook is getting underway and I want you to know that you can play a significant role in the creation of it! Campus Happenings Exam Tips Cont’d ...cont’d from pg 1 - make study notes, rewrite them - be born with a near photographic memory - study faithfully (love the lord your God with all your MIND), pray really hard From Will Weatherall: (1) find someone with cue cards (2) if (1) is successful study with them and quiz them on what you are weakest and they can quiz you on what they are weakest at. (3) if (1) is unsuccessful do not waste your time making cue cards unless writing things helps you retain information. Find your notes or slides and take turns being quizzed in a similar format to the above with a friend in your class. (4) Do physical activity while you study (pace, do push-ups, sit-ups, or whatever). You will be able con- centrate better. (5) Coffee is literally legal cheating when it comes to retention on the day of your exam, but don’t drink too much. (6) Explain concepts to your friends or family; it will bore them, but that is not the point. (7) That thing teachers told you about not remembering anything you cram within an hour before your exam is a lie, but sleeping on information is good, especially if you learn it that hour before you fall asleep. - don’t study in a group, but if you do make sure they’re less intelligent than you so you can go into the exam with a sense of confidence (albeit false, but at least you’ll be happy for the time leading up to the test) - bring kleenex, despair happens ...also, if you have a cold the Movember/No Shave ‘Hair’lights Collage perpetual sniffle during exams can seriously get on people’s nerves - bring water (don’t drink too much), bring lots of pens and pencils (just dumping them out on the table gives you an air of preparedness) shift positions throughout the exam, it stimulates blood flow, etc. - -This too shall pass, and you shall pass, and even if you don’t, it’ll be okay :) JOIN CLUBS! Banff Hot Springs Trip This year for our upperclassmen event I’m really excited to let you know we’ll be going to the Banff Hot Springs! This event will take place on Friday, January 14th. There has been a lot of concern about the cost, which is dependent on the amount of people who confirm on Facebook that they will be attending, but the cost will be $5 or less! This will be a very fun night full of laughter and community and I hope everyone can make it! Confirming for this event is important because it determines the kind of transportation we will use. If a lot of people sign up we will rent vans to take us there, and if only a few people confirm I will look into car pooling. Upon arrival we will spend roughly two hours in the hot springs and then head back to Ambrose. The possible cost will cover both entrance and transportation. Depending on numbers we may rent the entire pool, or pay per person. It is very important to confirm asap as I will move ahead with arranging transportation with the numbers available on Friday, December 17th. - Jahnaya Cey Upperclassmen Rep fin Quotable Quotes “I don’t want to eat chocolate cheesecake because it goes to my thighs” “You really don’t think I listen to Enrique Iglesias, but I do” - Ken Nickel “Evil is a circle and right in the centre of all that evil is math” - Meredith Buschart “Sometimes I forget I’m not a woman” -Adam Southgate “I want a flannelgraph instead of a powerpoint” - Tim Heath Decembrrr Contributors Wilbert Yee/Matthew Pope: “Men are like PCs and Women are like Macs.” Adam Southgate: “Yeah, like how women are complicated and hard to use. ...wait.” Michelle Elliott Moss Moustache “Don’t quote me on this in Balaam’s Donkey” - Ian Charter Kristen Lynne Breaker Have any quotes worthy of quoting?
