ere we go again. We have taken some rest; the
summer break was useful to think about new
initiatives, but also to acknowledge that we
must consolidate existing relationships, we
must look back to our history to continue - through innovation - to be what we are. Loyally.
This October issue is a tangible example: as you will see,
in the following pages we propose – as always – a magazine to read, full of contents.
This applies for the section dedicated to the world gathered during a great event such as Sicam, and it applies
to all the pages where we tell many other stories about
our industry, technology, made in Italy products.
This time as well we present many interviews, many
meetings… Maybe we are wrong, but we keep thinking
that our increasingly smaller (unfortunately) wood world
is made of people, people it is a great honor to meet and
a pleasure to talk to. If made in Italy is still successful
today, if the global markets look at our products with confidence and “willingness”, it is not only thanks to technology standards or quality/price/performance ratio, but
also to the people who have created, designed, developed, proposed, sold and installed those products and
are ready to ensure efficient post-sales service. It will not
always be a bed of roses, but when people show to be
willing to meet and understand each other, the benefit is
immediate!

RESEARCH
Wood fiber batteries
MARKETS
Timber harvests in Europe
Liangbing Hu and Nicholas Weadock from the University of Maryland, are working on a "wooden" battery. The idea is to use the
natural fibrous structures present in the structure, to stimulate the
charged particles and to create an electric current.
These batteries also would replace the commonly used lithium
with sodium.
Since sodium is not as effective in the maintenance phase of
charging, these batteries won’t be used for mobile phones, but
they could be useful for storing large amounts of energy from
sources such as the sun and the wind.
The batteries of "wood" are made of fiber a thousand times thinner than a sheet of paper. These fibers are woven and then coated with a thin layer of tin which helps the flow of current to pass
through the device. The combination of these elements is then
placed inside a metal disc.
The combination of wood and sodium is more abundant and affordable. The team is also examining the possibility of creating
a long-lasting and eco-friendly battery. ■
Timber harvests, wood consumption, log trade and sawlog
prices in Central Europe have seen substantial change during the past ten years with a shift in log production and consumption from western regions to countries in the east, reports the “Wood resource quarterly”. Harvests of timber in
Europe have remained practically unchanged for
three years at around 370 million cubic meters annually, according to the Unece. A closer look at the timber harvest
trends for Central Europe the past ten years reveals the interesting development that the average annual harvests in
the “Central West” region (Austria, Germany, Italy and
Switzerland) were 15 percent higher in the five years between 2003 through 2007 than between 2008 and 2012.
During the same period, the timber removals in the “Central East” region increased four percent, and this region now
harvests more than the “Central West”, a reversal from the
historical position when more timber was removed in the
western countries. ■

EVENTS
Eplf meeting of members in Salzburg
At the invitation of Kaindl, the members
of the Eplf (European panel laminate
flooring) met near Salzburg for their annual general meeting. Many exciting
topics were discussed at the meeting
of members, including the situation on
the world market, the Wood Flooring
Summit 2014 and international standardisation. The president of the association, Ludger Schindler, welcomed
Çamsan Entegre Agaç (Hendek –
Sakarya, Turkey), a manufacturer of Mdf
board and laminate flooring, to
Salzburg as a new ordinary member.
The Eplf currently has 22 ordinary and
23 associate member companies. The
ordinary members include the manufacturers of laminate flooring while the
associate members are their suppliers.
One of the main topics of the meeting
of members was the economic situation in the European laminate flooring
industry. Positive developments in
2012 once again confirm how well laminate flooring is accepted by the general public. Compared with the same
period in the previous year, the market
for laminate flooring produced in Eu-
rope by member firms was relatively
stable overall in the 1st quarter of
2013, although there were differences
on the individual sales markets: figures
for Asia and South America were up
and Eastern Europe increased slightly too while North America and Western Europe remained stable at a relatively high level. Between 2007 and
2012, global sales of laminate flooring
increased by 1.5 percent, but fell in Europe by 4.4 percent.
The Eplf is working with trade fair organizer Deutsche Messe Ag. on preparations for the second Wood Flooring
Summit, which will take place in 2014
at Domotex in Hanover. It is highly probable that the event will attract more exhibitors and be larger than the first summit in 2012.
The international standardisation
projects undertaken by the Eplf's Technology working group remain highly diverse. Good progress has been made
on work to revise En 14041 for elastic,
textile flooring and laminate floors. The
technical details in En 13329, 14897 and
15468 are no longer up to date. ■
EVENTS
Workshop “Impact of climate change on forest work”
In Europe, there are roughly 50,000
forestry contractors. They are crucial
to the forest sector and its transition towards a green economy. By harvesting
wood from the forests, they not only provide raw material to the forest industry
and renewable energy producers; they
also contribute to the sustainable management of forests.
Climate change is expected to directly
impact forest contractors by, for example, generating arduous labour
conditions, limiting harvest time (reduced period with frozen soil) or increasing volume harvested in forest,
which have been damaged by pests,
diseases, storm and fires. This will have
bearing on the health and safety of forest workers, as well as the way forest
operations are organised and conducted. Such consequences should be
taken into consideration when developing related policies and training
programmes.
The Ece/Fao/Ilo Joint Expert Network,
to implement sustainable forest management, is organizing a workshop to
identify climate change related impacts on forestry work. ■

The “Endless Stair”
The Endless Stair, landmark project for this year’s London Design Festival, has been inaugurated on 16 September and placed on the lawn in front of the worldrenowned Tate Modern. The construction of the Endless
Stair, which will be the first-ever such structure to use American tulipwood cross-laminated timber (Clt). The
project, which was conceived in January 2013, is
pushing the boundaries of
hardwood in construction.
Starting from a fantasy
Esher-inspired drawing
utilising, for the first time, tulipwood cross-laminated timber (Clt), dRMM and Arup have worked with specialist
teams in Italy and Switzerland to research and test the
strength of the material and develop the design to allow
public access to the structure at this exciting cultural destination. In Italy, Imola Legno, a long-established family owned timber specialist, has been making the Clt panels in its factory, one of the most ‘green’ in the country.
With a large installation of photovoltaics (solar panels)
and either by burning or selling the timber waste as pellets, the plant is a net exporter of electricity. ■

Wood chips imports in China
On the occasion of the General Assembly of the shareholders, the Board

With recent pulpmill expansion, China
has surpassed Japan to become the
world’s largest importer of hardwood
chips, reports the Wood Resource

Major expansion of pulp manufacturing
capacity in China the past five years has
resulted in a dramatic increase in the importation of wood chips to supply the
new pulp mills, and the country became
the world’s largest importer of hardwood
chips in the 2Q/13, reports the Wood
Resource Quarterly. Australia, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam are the major suppliers of wood chips, with Vietnam accounting for over 50 percent of
the imported supply.
Growing demand for paper in China has
not only forced the country to import large
volumes of pulp to supply the country’s
paper machines, but also resulted in investments in new pulp production within China. Because of a lack of competitively priced wood fiber in China, the two
pulp companies with the largest pulp
mills in the country, Asia Pacific Resources International Ltd (APRIL) and
Asia Pulp and Paper (APP), are procuring much of their wood fiber needs from
out-of-country sources. As a consequence, importation of wood chips to
China has surged the past few years. ■

FEDERLEGNOARREDO
Roberto Snaidero candidate to the presidency
At the end of the meeting recently held
in Milan, the Committee of FederlegnoArredo decided with very large majority to reapply Roberto Snaidero to
the head of the federation for the
2014-2017 period.
"I thank my colleagues for their confidence. This trust confirms the quality

be brought to a conclusion with continuity, providing the right support to our

Snaidero after the meeting. ■

Sawmills in Sweden and Finland have
expanded shipments of lumber to
markets outside Europe from 27 to 43
percent of total exports the past five
years, reports the Wood Resource
Quarterly (www.woodprices.com)
Just five years ago, sawmills in Finland

to countries within Europe. By 2012, this
share had fallen to 57 percent. ■
MARKETS
The Global Forest Industry in the 2Q/13
The Global sawlog price index (Gspi) increased for the
fourth consecutive quarter. Hardwood wood fiber price
index (Hfpi) has fallen every quarter for two years with one
exception. In the 2Q/13, the Hfpi was 3.1 percent lower
than the previous quarter and 14.8 percent below the alltime high. The Softwood wood fiber price index (Sfpi) was
also down in the 2Q/13, but the decline over the past two
years has been less dramatic than that of Hfpi. Higher demand for pulp added upward pressure on prices of both
softwood pulp (Nbsk) and hardwood pulp (Bhk) during
the 2Q/13. North American lumber production was up 7.5
percent during the first five months of 2013.
After the sharp increase in Us lumber prices in 2012 and
early 2013, douglas-fir and spruce-pine-fir (Spf) prices fell
from their ten-year peak in January.
The trend of sawmills in the Nordic countries diversifying
their geographical customer base has continued in
2013. Lumber prices in Japan had trended downward
during much of 2012 and early 2013 but suddenly
turned around late in the 2Q/13. Us South pellet export
volumes to Europe resumed their double-digit growth after a brief pause in the fourth quarter of 2012. ■

EUMABOIS
A NEW BOARD FOR EUMABOIS
A strong, functional assembly which led to some interesting points for consideration and some issues
which we need to dedicate greater energy to in the
near future. Very briefly, these are the results of the
Eumabois annual assembly – the European federation that unites 13 national associations of woodworking technology, tools and accessories manufacturers - held on 6 September in Jyvaskyla.
The representatives from the different organisations,
hosted by the Finnish association of woodworking technology manufacturers, appointed a
new board for the association. The new president
is Ambrogio Delachi, president of Acimall, the Italian woodworking technology manufacturers association, while the position of vice-president falls to
Juergen Koeppel, member of the Homag Group
board, representing German association Vdma.
The other members were confirmed for new term:
Zdenek Bezdek (Svdsz, Czech Republic), Heikki
Sonninen (Technology Industries of Finland, Finland)
and Erich Zeller (HBT, Switzerland), in addition to
Treasurer Jean Paul Balz (HBT, Switzerland).
The retiring president, Franz-Joseph Buetfering,
opened the meeting with his report, which gave a particularly significant review of the European group's
work over the last six years.
Buetfering immediately emphasised the importance
of the presence, for the first time in the federation's
16 XYLON INTERNATIONAL September-October 2013
history, of two new companies, Belgian Robland and
Turkish Toskar.
“With them – commented Mr Buetfering – we are
embarking on a new, highly interesting period which,
I am certain, will provide a strong stimulus to the
growth of our federation. In fact, we have decided,
in cases where there is no national association for
the sector, to accept other associations which can
provide credibility and representation within their
home countries. This has a double purpose: to gain
access to first-hand information on individual
countries, while also stimulating the creation of national associations within Europe".
Mr Buetfering then continued by recalling the
most important milestones during his mandate,
which coincided with one of the most difficult periods for the entire global economy, thanking each
association for “… having done everything within
their power to support firms”.
The retiring president also drew attention to the hard
work put in to set up a high quality trade fair network, creating events that, under the sponsorship
of the European Federation, can act as a reference
point for the entire production chain in the various
economic areas (we should emphasise that from
2014, the "Iwf” from Atlanta (Us) will also be part
of the Eumabois circuit).
Mr Buetfering moved on to mention the activities
of the “Tool Group” and the “good work on com-
munications”, starting with the new website and has allowed us, beyond all expectations, to ratiothe creation of the Eumabois Newsletter and the nalise the international trade fair calendar as well

WEAK MARKET,
EXPORT RISING
Selling “made in Italy” instrumental goods
to foreign countries provides the industries
represented by Federmacchine with
“pure oxygen”. Unfortunately, the national
market is still lifeless, although Italy
keeps up with the European “giants”.
2012 was a “weary” year for the Italian industry
of instrumental goods, with stable production (minus 0.8 percent), shrinking domestic demand
(minus 8.1 percent) and an export level that was
confirmed as the only reassuring figure (plus 2.2
percent).
The results of the industry were illustrated in the figures processed by the statistics department of Federmacchine, the Italian federation gathering the
associations of the manufacturers of instrumental
goods used for industry and handicraft manufacturing processes, member of Confindustria, where
also Acimall is included.
Essentially – after two years of rally that allowed a
partial recovery of business lost during the crisis –
in 2012 Italian instrumental goods stayed still, in line
with the more general trend of the Eurozone market.
The production value reached 29 billion Euros, with
export attaining 21.8 billion Euros. A scenario where
half of the member associations of Federmacchine
recorded 8.9 percent turnover decrease, with do-
mestic supplies decreased by 8.9 percent (less than
7.2 billion), while the weakness of the Italian market penalized importers as well (minus 6.8 percent,
4.2 billion).
RESCUE EXPORT
Despite enduring difficulties on the domestic market, exports keep on strengthening. Export orientation (export/production according to the figures
of 2012 preliminary balance) for the whole industry represented by Federmacchine reached 75 percent, with Acimall at 78 percent, above the average level, while the overall trade balance of the industries covered by Federmacchine was positive,
with 17.6 billion Euros (plus 4.7 percent), the
fourth year of growth since the collapse in 2009, with
an overall balance of goods in 2012 that was positive by only 11 billion Euros. The industry of mechanical equipment and machinery alone (also including the machines of Federmacchine manufacturers) reached a trade balance of 48 billion euros.

The main destination markets, defined according
to figures covering seven out of twelve member associations (72 percent of the total export value), featured European Union in the first position with a 27.5
percent share; countries out of the EU accounted for
10 percent. The domestic market, reaching 24.8 percent of the total, brought the total value to 52.3 percent, considering that in five years the European market has lost some ten percentage points.
This trend, according to Federmacchine, shows the
weakness of demand expressed by these countries
(and first of all by the Italian market) as well as the
capacity of Italian companies to modify their markets
significantly and within a short time. As to extra European areas, 15 percent of exported products were
headed towards Asia, followed by the Nafta Countries (9.1 percent), South-America (5.9 percent), Africa
(4 percent), the Middle East (3 percent) and Oceania (0.8 percent).
The areas that gained more shares included Asia and
Latin America, but progress was also recorded in the
Middle East and Africa and, in the past two years, in
North America, driven by the re-industrialization of the
United States.
2012 recorded a very diversified trend in foreign sales
of Italian machinery. In the European Union countries, sales reached a value of 8 billion Euros (plus
1.5 percent against 2011). Good results were recorded on the German market, which exceeded 1,900 million Euros (plus 6.5 percent); the French market was
a non-starter (plus 1 percent, 1,400 million Euros approximately). Sales in the United Kingdom recorded
huge increase (669 million, plus 20 percent), while
Poland (651 million, plus 1.8 percent) surpassed Spain
(571 million, minus 18 percent). Italian exports towards
extra-EU Countries gained 6.3 percent over 2011
(2.9 billion).
Sales in Turkey were stable (minus 0.3 percent, 974
million) as well as in the Switzerland (plus 1.1 percent,
432 million), while Russia (967 million, plus 18 percent) and Ukraine recorded growth (125 million, plus
8.7 percent).
Southern and Eastern Asia ranked second among
the foreign destinations with 4.4 billion Euros, despite the drop by 4.7 percent (China 2 billion, minus 11 percent; India 666 million, minus 8.6 percent). Good results were recorded by Indonesia
(plus 44 percent), Japan (plus 13 percent) and Thailand (plus 16 percent).
More generally, North America got close to an in-

crease by 20 percent for a value of 2.6 billion. The
growth involved the whole area: the United States (1.9
billion, plus 17 percent), Mexico (560 million, plus 31
percent) and Canada (206 million, plus 14 percent).
South America imported machinery for a value of
1.7 billion Euros, minus 1.1 percent against 2011.
Brazil experienced a crisis (779 million, minus 10.6
percent), ranking ahead of Argentine (208 million),
Venezuela (155 million) and Colombia (134 million).
Africa bought Italian machines for 1.2 billion Euros
(plus 2.4 percent). The first customer is South Africa
(219 million, plus 16.5 percent); good results also for
Algeria (193 million, plus 24 percent) and Tunisia (145
million, plus 17 percent). Export towards Egypt was
decreasing (minus 15 percent), as well as Morocco
(minus 12 percent) and Nigeria (minus 19 percent).
In the Middle-East, after sales decreased by 5.6 percent (859 million euros), the Arab Countries of the Gulf
recorded good results (Saudi Arabia plus 12 percent,
Emirates plus 23.5 percent), while Iran (minus 31 percent) and Israel (minus 11 percent) decreased. Sales
in Oceania reached 208 million (169 were headed towards Australia, 31 towards New Zealand).
ITALY, “SMALL” AND COMPETITIVE
There are 3,650 Italian companies belonging to the
twelve industries represented by Federmacchine for
a production accounting for 1.9 percent of the national
gross domestic product; the sales of machines in foreign countries covered a share of 4.6 percent of total Italian export (5.6 percent considering only export
of goods).

Employment, in 2012, accounted for 3.5 percent of
the total of employees in the Italian manufacturing
industry. In the international scenario, Made in Italy
products for instrumental mechanics continued to
cover relevant positions. According to the figures
processed by the Statistics Department of Federmacchine on Eurostat data referring to 2010,
Nace Rev 2 “Machinery and equipment“ (the
closest industry to instrumental goods, though it is
wider), Italy accounted for 12.6 percent on European GDP (13.6 percent for industry and 18.2 percent for machinery) ranking fourth after Germany,
the United Kingdom and France.
As to the manufacturing industry, Germany consolidated its position in the first ranking (with a share of
27.3%). It was followed by Italy, which gained two positions, with 13.6%, before France and the United
Kingdom. If we talk about machinery, Germany still
experienced an increase of its market share (38.5 percent),and Italy consolidated its second place (18.2
percent). France (7.9 percent) and the United Kingdom (7.1 percent) lag behind.
20 XYLON INTERNATIONAL September-October 2013
Italy ranked first as to the number of companies, that
featured much smaller size compared to main European competitors (26 percent over the total), followed by Germans (17 percent). The difference in
terms of industrial size against Germany and France
does not reduce the competitive potential of made
in Italy on foreign markets: with an average European
turnover per employee equal to 194 thousand Euros,
Italy reached 216 thousand Euros, only surpassed
by France (237 thousand) and before Germany (203
thousand).
TARGETED EFFORTS FOR RECOVERY
What is the balance we can draw after another year
characterized by the economic crisis and recession?
“According to these data – said Giancarlo Losma,
president of Federmacchine, during the presentation of the figures at the last annual assembly of the
federation – it is obvious that the Italian industry knew
how to face the crisis, helped by the federation that
operates to support companies in the development
process and to represent the requests of industry
companies”. In order to make the recovery start, we
need targeted efforts to support the domestic
consumption of instrumental goods, starting from the
liberalization of amortization rates.
“In our proposal – continued Losma – investments
in instrumental goods are tax-deductible from income taxes, with shares that are freely decided by
the companies. This measure does not have an influence – in the medium term – on the state balance,
for it only implies a transfer of income for the inland
revenue service. A minimum measure to adopt, in
the shortest time possible, is to revise coefficients, so as to adjust the amortization quotas according to the real useful life of instrumental good,
so that the investments of companies will be no
longer penalized”.
The fiscal leverage and the facilitations to promote
research and innovation are, according to Losma,
the suitable tools on which to operate, but he also
added: “Strong tax pressure makes everything very
complicated. While understanding the need to keep
this line to keep State accounts in order, machinery manufacturers ask to reduce the Irap tax (the
regional tax on production activities) on staff by a
percentage equal to the export/turnover ratio of the
company, with the goal to support the most virtuous companies and to boost the internationalization process of the companies that are still strongly oriented at operating in the domestic market”. ■

ITALIAN WOODWORKING TECHNOLOGY:
STABLE TREND ALSO IN THE SECOND QUARTER
Once again, “stability” is the
most suitable definition for
the trend of made-in-Italy
technology in the woodworking and wood-based materials industry. Just like the first
three months of this year,
also the second quarter was
characterized by substantial
stability on the domestic and
international markets. And
also in the April-June period,
we must underline an essential difference: while stability
in orders from abroad is a further positive step towards
the consolidation of Italy’s
strong export propensity, the
same “stability” on the Italian
market once again means
that Italian companies using
woodworking technology
show no signs of liveliness,
suggesting no recovery, how-
ever moderate, in the short
term.
The traditional survey by the
Studies Office of Acimall (the
Italian woodworking machinery and tools manufacturers’ association), based on
a statistic sample of manufacturers of all types and
sizes, reveals decreasing
orders down by 1.1 percent
compared to the same period of 2012. Demand from
abroad decreased by 0.9
percent, while the decline
on the domestic market was
1.4 percent. The book of
orders is at 2.6 months,
while prices have been
growing by 0.9 percent since
the beginning of the year.
Revenues in the quarter under scrutiny dropped by 3
percent compared to April-
June 2012. According to the
quality survey, 35 percent
of the interviewed companies
indicate a positive production trend, 42 percent stable
and 23 percent decreasing.
Employment is considered
stationary by 81 percent of
the sample and falling by the
remaining 19 percent. Available stocks are stationary
according to 46 percent, decreasing according to 31
percent and growing according to the remaining 23
percent.
The forecast survey outlines possible short-term industry trends: moderate optimism for export, but nobody expects a rally of sales
in Italy. Foreign orders will
record growth according to
27 percent of the sample,
while they are expected to
stay at the same level according to 54 percent. The
remaining 19 percent expects a drop (balance is
plus 8). The domestic market
will be shrinking further according to 27 percent of the
sample, remain stable according to 73 percent (negative balance minus 27).
A look at the index of confidence of Italian manufacturers, slightly improving for
foreign markets after a long
period of alternate positive
and negative feelings, offers a small positive signal
within a generally “wait-andsee” attitude for the future developments of international
market and economy. Pessimism about the domestic
market has become solid.
The April-June 2013 period is
the eleventh consecutive
quarter with negative expectations, the seventh with
a negative balance exceeding 20 points. Recovery is inevitably associated to government measures to revive
domestic demand: everyone is waiting to see the impact of recent measures offer tax allowances for building renovation and a “furniture bonus”, for which a further extension at least to

urged by many. ■

EPF: THE PANEL INDUSTRY
MET IN DUBLIN
The European Panel Federation, representing the European manufacturers of particleboard, Mdf, Osb, hardboard and softboard, held its
Annual General Meeting in
Dublin, Ireland (3 - 5 July
2013).
In his presentation during the
Open Part of the General Assembly on Friday 5 July, Epf
President Ladislau Döry reported that the European particleboard production shrunk
further by 5.5 percent in 2012
and amounted to 28.7 million
m3. This production level thus
remains far below the output
peak at 37.8 million m3 observed in 2007. The furniture
industry and the construction
sector are the two main drivers behind the particleboard
activity. Both remained subdued in 2012, reflecting the
European economic context
and the stagnant consumption
especially for durable goods.
The reduction of excess production capacities for particleboard will continue in 2013
and is not expected to end before 2014.
Following two years of moderate growth in 2010 and
2011, Mdf production in Europe contracted by 6 percent in 2012, reaching almost
11 million m3, excluding Turkish and Russian production.
This production level is significantly lower than the peak
of 2007 at 13.3 million m3. Mdf
production capacities continue to adapt slowly to lower demand.
In 2012, European production of Osb contracted moderately by 2.3 percent and still
exceeded 3.5 million m3. This
level remains somewhat below
the production peak at 3.7 million m3 in 2007.
Finally, production of hardboard in Europe increased
moderately by 1percent in
2012 compared to 2011,
reaching 1.2 million m³ and a
capacity utilisation rate around
75 percent. Following a decrease by 5 percent in 2011,
the European production of

softboard upturned by 2.1
percent in 2012.
The wood-based panels industry is trying slowly to get
out of the economic downturn
though it stagnated at low level during the year 2012 and
continues to face significant
challenges such as the limited availability of wood and increases in production costs,
especially resins and energy.
Mr. Döry also underlined the
major event of the past year:
the exhibition in the European Parliament during the
first week of December 2012.
Epf has embraced the opportunity given by Mep Gaston Franco to establish again
an exhibition in the European Parliament in Brussels
in close co-operation with
Cei-Bois, Eos and other partners in the woodworking sector with the ambition to enhance the knowledge of the
EU decision makers at the
highest level of the concerns
of the woodworking and panel industries on key issues
such as carbon storage and
wood availability and com-
petition with the biomass energy sector. Attention was
appealed through wooden
artworks of famous European
contemporary artists that like
to work with wood and woodbased products.
Epf advocacy action was successful in 2012 and EpfPF
saluted the work of the European Commission and the
Parliament to approve the report on the accounting rules
and national plans for emissions resulting from land use
and land use change from
agricultural and forest activities (Lulucf). Epf expects that
the new Lulucf rules will
prompt governments to support the sector concretely, for
example by encouraging the
replacement of more energyintensive materials for wood in
new construction and renovation.
To conclude, Mr Döry expressed its gratitude to Coillte
Panel Products for the invitation to come to Ireland and
their tremendous help in making this Annual General Meeting successful. ■

The recent edition of Ligna 2013 gave Giben the opportunity to present
their latest innovations connected to the world of panel sawing solutions.
In cooperation with Politecnico di Milano, Giben
(www.giben.it) has finally developed – after the presentation of the prototypes which
took place two years ago –
“Prisma6000 Ecotech”, a
panel saw presented during
the latest edition of Ligna in
Hannover.
This patented machine,
equipped with linear motors,
both on the saw carriage and
pusher, features prismatic
guides to keep a perfectly
constant distance between
slide and magnetic rail, a
basic requirement for the operation of linear motors. These
motors allow to eliminate the
friction of mechanical components such as gears,
chains and belts and, con-
sequently, also reduce noise,
wear and maintenance.
The main benefit is, without
any doubt, the remarkable
saw carriage speed reaching
over 230 meters per minute
as well as the pusher speed
of 170 meters per minute.
This enables to carry out up
to 15 cuts per minute, combined with very high acceleration. The blade motor can
reach up to 37 kW.
The saw carriage and the
pusher move on a magnetic
rail and thus expensive maintenance operations of a pressure cutting machine are
simply eliminated.
Another key benefit is the
adoption of “Kers” (Kinetic
energy saving system), resulting from acceleration and
“Icon1-Spv”.

deceleration. Each time the
saw carriage moves, its energy, that is normally wasted,
is gathered inside an accumulator which conveys the
energy to the cutting machines when it is full. The results processed in cooperation with the university yield
average energy saving by
over 30 percent generated
from the saw carriage motion.
In the “Ecotech” version, lubrication is forced and managed by the computer, a
brand new generation device
as well. “GdriveQ” indeed is
a totally innovative and extremely user friendly user interface based on touch
screen icons as optional elements.
The easy accessibility to all
mechanical units is ensured
by four wide doors that allow
the operator to easily and
comfortably access the machine in all the areas of the
saw carriage.
Another patented innovation
by Giben was the launch of
“Icon1-Spv”. It is the evolution
of “Icon1” sawing machine,
conceived without motors onboard the saw carriage.
An additional frame to support a stack of panels above
the worktable, and forks that
act as intermediate station
allow to carry out loading
operations without interfering with machining operations. The result is remarkable saving in terms of footprint behind the machine
and time, because the machine can be loaded during
operation. ■

STRATEGIC INNOVATIONS
TO BE MORE COMPETITIVE
From gluing systems and equipment to the supply of turnkey plants
for panel production, mostly osb, for the Italian market.
This is the story of Group Imal Pal Globus, getting ready
for further development in the Italian woodworking landscape.
Loris Zanasi.
Let us tell you: the company we are going
to talk about has been waving the Italian
banner up high in the panel production
business. In an industry where our country has gradually lost market shares, they
decided to expand business, starting a
challenging "virtuous circle" that shuffled
all cards on the table. Here's the story...
The industrial story of Group Imal Pal Globus – respectively based in San Damaso (Modena), Ponte
di Piave (Treviso) and Galliate (Novara) – arouses curiosity for its combination of several decades of experience in chip preparation and gluing technology, inline equipment for quality control, process control, panel handling and new expansion visions that
supported an effective aggregation strategy. In recent years, the group has developed and invested
in continuous forming and pressing technology,
complementing its product portfolio for the supply
of turnkey plants for particleboard, mdf and osb production, as well as insulating panels, pellets, pallet
blocks, waste treatment and management.
The holding company, Imal (an acronym for
“Impianti macchine automatiche legno”), founded
by Paolo Benedetti in 1970, is a model of “made in
Italy” business, born in a garage like many others.
26 XYLON INTERNATIONAL September-October 2013
No big investments, much creativity and the right
knowledge at the right time, generating successful
synergy. From the original production of glue mixers (and later on, gluing machines, scales and other gluing equipment), in 38 years Imal and Pal have
developed some eighty industrial patents and a
diversified core business through a strategy of acquisitions that has finally involved also Globus, specializing in wood grinding and refining machinery.
A view of the Imal factory
in San Damaso (Modena).
Today, the group is run by the
Benedetti, Zanasi and Dal Ben families, with 350 employees and total revenues above 100 million Euros, mostly generated by export that account
for close to 90 percent of production.
“The history of our group is closely related to Paolo Benedetti”, says Loris
Zanasi, managing director and Ceo at
Imal. “A genius, and a hard-working
man, who started his career as electrical chief engineer in a particleboard
plant, setting up his own business after many jobs. The turning point was
the invention of the first automatic
machine for glue mixture preparation.
That’s how Imal, Impianti macchine
automatiche legno, was born in 1969.
Water kept flowing and the product
range expanded gradually.ddd Today
the company offers all it takes to manufacture mdf, particleboard and osb,
with solutions built within the group or
as contractor. This mission is supported by tighter and tighter collaboration
with Pal, resulting into a merger in 1998,
and Globus, a manufacturer of chipping machines, enabling Imal-Pal to
“close the loop” and handle virtually all
process stages with their own technology.
Producing different plants to produce panels requires a wide spectrum of expertise...
“We have excellent staff”, Zanasi says. “A company
is great if they have great people. Our staff have
been with us for decades, their loyalty is amazing.
This adds to continuity at management level, with
different generations of our families running the companies... a unique value...
For all these years, we have been able to work in
a changing world, always expressing what we are,
what we can do, often contributing with our experience in processing waste management, also in
industries other than wood.
We have built and delivered plants for different products all over the world! Just to give you a clear example of what we can do, we also make “cubes”
for pallets from woodworking scraps, without cutting a single tree!

Globus”.
Pal is a global leader in wood cleaning and recycling.
What’s the secret of a good panel?
“Raw material is definitely on top, with the right grain
size to press fiber and strands efficiently and
achieve a consistent layer. This is Globus’ specialty,
they manufacture the world’s biggest knife cutting
machine for chip refining. It’s the only one with 690
millimeter knife, an effective patented system that executes a uniform distribution of material, all along the
knife, achieving an hourly capacity of 18 tons”.
Why are Italians so good in panel processing, but
you are virtually the only specialist in panel production technology?
“It’s a strange business, difficult, small… many Italian panel manufacturers have closed down, the “big
ones” are fighting hard. German competitors can rely
on a “country system” and government support, especially for export and easy credit to customers. Here

quality product made of a raw material grown with
sustainable methods and very lightweight. This is a
major achievement, not only from a technical standpoint, as the product offers high added value".
Do you think osb is the panel of the future?
“We see different destinations for each type of panel: a certain type of osb panel might also penetrate
the furniture sector, subtracting market shares to
particleboard and mdf, but clearly each panel has
specific destinations based on its physical and mechanical properties.
We can say that, with IPan, we have invented a new
opportunity for a panel that is stronger than particleboard and can be laminated, coated or veneered
to make lighter kitchen and office furniture.
in Italy, we have no support, and we are even burdened by the heavy bureaucracy of our country.
One of your latest creations is the production plant
for poplar osb installed at IPan of Group Bonzano…
“Osb is increasingly popular and its applications are
expanding, mostly in constructions and packaging, which is trying to replace plywood. Osb production from poplar is an important project for Italy,
as we have imported 100 percent of osb from abroad
until few months ago. Once up and running, the IPan
plant will deliver 500 cubic meters per day, a high
28 XYLON INTERNATIONAL September-October 2013
Mr Zanasi, it seems you are growing against the
general market trend: the Imal Pal Globus does not
seem to know what crisis means….
“We are working hard: that’s the only way to stay in
business in the global market and keep growing. We
are not afraid of working in a mature industry and
we try to exploit all niches. Take the example of plywood, we supply dedicated machinery for quality
control, having focused the resources of our electronic department on this segment; we have a few
dozens of highly skilled engineers and technicians.
Or panel measurement with ultrasound devices to
identify possible separations, non homogeneous areas or air pockets inside the panel.
Last year we developed a system to inject steam into
the mat before the press, which helps increase productivity by 10 to 25 percent as a result of an additional "cooking" phase for the bottom layer. I can also
mention our X-ray detectors for foreign bodies in
panels, or another Xray system to measure mdf panel density inline, or again our solutions to measure
formaldehyde emissions, a digital camera shooting
one million pictures per minute to check the grain
size of mdf or particleboard chips, and “turnkey” laboratories to measure all panel properties.
How do we manage? We listen to customers and
put together our expertise to give a successful answer”. ■
SOFTWARE
FROM THE HEART OF THE MACHINE
TO THE BRAIN OF THE COMPANY
The future of software is clear: maximum flexibility and adaptation,
ease of use and tight integration with business operations management.
Because producing effectively, also with a working center, is no longer enough…
Behind the brand of an international giant in the woodworking software industry, we find Italian roots. And
a boom that has supported and pushed the growth
of numerical control machines in the domestic scenario. We are talking about Licom Systems, a company of Bollengo (Torino), with a subsidiary in the
Triveneto area in Gaiarine (Treviso), founded in
1992 by Marco Silva and Giovanni Pichioldi, Italian subsidiary of British Vero Software and exclusive
distributor of Alphacam software for wood, stone and
plastic processing and mechanical operations.
Licom System is a “made in Italy” company that has
found the winning path for internationalization and
that is a leading actor in the development and diffusion of working centers for wood, plastics, marble and metal. In 1995 some of the shares of the
company were sold to Licom Systems Limited, in
UK, the company developing “Alphacam” software
for NC machine programming. In 2001, Licom Limited was sold to the Planit Group, a giant in the software industry, which in 2011 merged with Vero Software, a company listed on the stock exchange. An
irresistible ascent that has brought the turnover of
the reference system at over 100 million dollars; two
million (dollars) collected in our country by Licom
Systems srl, 60 percent of which in the wood, marble, metal and plastics industries.
The customization of software and the increasingly
strong integration between technology and enterprise management are the new frontiers for Alphacam and Licom System, as we were told by
Marco Silva, the owner, together with his business
partner Giovanni Pichioldi.
wood, marble and metal – and this is an important
benefit, for it allows us to work in different fields. We
can count on several customers, though they are
very "attentive" to investments. Fortunately, we
have adapted to the changes of recent years: until 2011, for example, we achieved our turnover mainly thanks to machine and equipment manufacturers rather than with the final customers. The balance
moved and we moved as well, with excellent results
in 2012, bucking the trend against what we were seeing and we were hearing around us.
Another aspect that is evolving directly involves our
traditional customers, namely machine manufac-

An important role is played by maintenance contracts that the customers sign together with us and
that push us more strongly towards performance
and services: continuity is not only an important economic base for a consolidated and constructive relationship, but it allows us and our customers to look

turers, who are becoming our competitors: they directly propose their own software solutions and, thus,
they are eroding the shares of first installations. Also
for this reason, we moved in advance so as to find
different application fields, addressing to all the customers who have more complicated needs not really from a geometrical-functional point of view, but
from a management point of view, proposing solutions allowing them to interface with external databases or third-party software – an approach that is
ensuring satisfaction with important customers that
ask us to integrate a specific software solution in their
chain. A long, continuous line, thus, where integration between different packages is absolute”.
“There is a third element that is characterizing this
season”, continued Silva. “Today more than ever,
we have a competitive benefit as part of a great
group: constant technology exchange. It’s not
mere chance that the motto is “share technology”.
The latest release of “Alphacam” software features
several implementations, with important graphical
simulations integrated in the package. You can
“touch” the higher performance of the product compared to only four, five years ago.
30 XYLON INTERNATIONAL September-October 2013
The time when the joiner looked at the working center as a space shuttle is over, isn’t it?
“Many things have changed, I say it again. Today
software is a basic element for production assets
and I am convinced that there is a lot of room for
companies such as ours. We have experience, we
know new technologies, and, at the same time, we
have the skills to increase the performance of those
companies that have some years of working experience.
The fact that the generations of our customers have
changed has not to be neglected: in the laboratories and in the factories, we talk with young people
between twenty and thirty years, much more "inside
the topic" than their parents or company owners.
I also want to say that there are more and more customers convinced that dealing with an independent company, specializing in software development,
allows them to be supported better and more effectively, because we can deliver a strongly customized product and leverage experience from different fields. Very often we see more preparation,
a stronger open-minded approach towards advanced systems in industries different from the wood
sector, entrepreneurs in the plastics and metal industries, who do understand the importance of a
good software solution and are not frightened by
the costs or the need to carry out a minimal training process. This makes us think. In the world of
wood, maybe, this is a bit more difficult…”.
Well, the working center is no longer an unknown
innovation, but difficulties are not lacking…
“We started at the beginning of the Nineties and we
directly experienced this situation. Our software was
one of the first solutions to be implemented in the
wood industry. We have simplified many things; today we live in a new stage of this evolution; the
needs of contemporary design imply higher
complexity in production, despite a difficult economic situation such as the current one.
We need something more and better, but invest-
ments are postponed, people try to make the most
of what they already have, both in terms of machinery and software. And we send a strong message in this scenario: if you do not want to buy a
new machine, make the most of the one you have
optimizing its software. We can operate on outdated
machines and increase their flexibility and productivity, improving performance also significantly, allowing them to carry out machining processes that could not be imagined! And all this has been
confirmed by facts allowing us to achieve – as I were
saying at the beginning of our meeting – excellent
results in 2012”.
What is the most requested feature?
“…no limits to the machine, it has to carry out what
was considered as impossible before. Today we
tend to leverage a technology more, to make the
most of it thanks to suitable programming. Many entrepreneurs prefer to carry out “in-house” operations
rather than relying on subcontractors, in the past
they thought they were not able to do that. On the
contrary, with definitely more limited investments
compared to the purchase of a new machine, today they do not only carry out more difficult operations with great simplicity, but they also increase
the productivity.
Our customers ask us to improve feasibility to move
towards this direction: with “Alphacam” we go beyond the limits of “on-board software” and we offer effective solutions, proving that each machine
can perform more effectively if it is adequately managed”.
Can a good software solution reveal unknown sides
of a machine?
“Sure! We have some customers who have fun in
processing particularly complex workpieces and
we have unleash our creativity with them. They are
our favorite customers, because they spur us to develop the most diverse applications. During the past
three years, we have defined special systems and
controls for designers that probably we would have
not even considered without customers' motivation
such as in the case of wave panels for trendy
kitchens, panels for public venues, restaurants, discos and so on.
The product, however, always stems from customer
needs: through our site we gather different requests
that the mother company evaluates and then – if
they have a value – they are developed.
The same applies to classical furniture, a field
where our systems allow users to import grey-scale
drawings to machine capitals and very classical
decorations or low-reliefs requested by Russian and
Arab markets.
Subcontractors for us remain the most stimulating players because, having a varied customer portfolio, they are a source of inspiration and challenges
for us and they provide us with precious information and hints from the market”.
As to future prospects, you are confident…
“… and we would be even more confident if we saw
more attention on training. We struggle too much to
make people understand that this is not a cost, but
a real investment! Leveraging good software and
making the most of it requires constant training: we organize courses
in our facilities or in cooperation with
category associations, companies
and local administrations, to explain
how to leverage what they have in
the best possible way.
We need to be more active also in
schools: we have provided several
professional institutes in Italy and
abroad with free “Alphacam” software licenses, because we want to
contribute to the knowledge of new
systems and, thus, create future
customers”. (l.r.) ■

KITCHENS AND BEDROOM DOORS IN 24 HOURS:
THE BROWNS 2000 CHALLENGE
Delivering cabinet doors or components for kitchen sets within 24 hours
from order entry is a sci-fi challenge. UK company Browns 2000 has won this
challenge with a revolutionary business model and Scm Group’s technology.
Peter Brown puts you at ease. He is an Englishman who can laugh and live life for what it brings.
As soon as you meet him, you feel like going out
for a beer, talking about football and plans for Saturday night.
Then, surprisingly, you realize Peter is a sort of "furniture genius", who has invented his own way of doing business in this complicated world. An ingen-
ious Englishman, if you allow this definition, who – with a recipe all of his own
– proves that there is still much to invent…
But how? We are going to tell you. Not before telling you we had the pleasure to
meet him in Rimini, at the Scm Group

At Browns 2000 (www.browns2000.co

TEHNOLOGY DAYS EDGEBANDING & MORE
The laser edging in the spotlight

we learned about a new way of doing business, or
at least, a way we did not know.
Let’s start from a significant economic figure, i.e. the
woodworking business in England is worth one
hundred million Euros approximately, considering new
equipment, a bit less than fifty percent built by Italian companies. But let’s listen to Peter Brown.
“The adventure began in 1983, in a garage, as it often happens”, Mister Brown said. “I was struck by
wood, and how I could transform it. Real passion. I
involved my wife, and together, we created the story of Browns 2000.
In thirty years, many things have changed: today we
have approximately 20 million Euro revenues, about
eighty people, including our children, and we specialize in cabinet doors for kitchens and bedrooms.
We do not just process wood but, in order to provide

34 XYLON INTERNATIONAL September-October 2013
full and fast service, we have learned to process also
marble and glass. We are more independent, we
have acquired more expertise to manage the entire
process directly. This makes the difference with other companies: we provide complete high-quality solutions, using the best materials and technology available. That’s our philosophy...”.
“Sales and manufacturing somehow coincide in our
company”, Peter Brown continues. “Customers who
come to us don’t just see products, but also how we
build them, what we do, with which tools. Also for this
reason, we have invested much in machinery and
equipment, in order to be sure we achieve the final
result through flexibility, speed and productivity.
If you choose one of our cabinet doors or kitchen sets,
you don’t buy a piece of panel, glass or marble, you
buy us, what we are: you buy Browns 2000.”
“Those who know the peculiarities of the British market can easily understand the Browns 2000 phenomenon”, said Gabriele De Col managing director of Scm Group in the United Kingdom, who, together with Ian McCarthy, sales manager, is the link
between Browns and Italian wood technology.
“When Peter says “customers”, he means something like two thousand installers. Not a few hundred resellers of a big customer, but thousands of
joiners, however inaccurate this definition may be,
who collect orders from final consumers to manufacture a new kitchen or renovate an old one. They
don’t produce or they manufacture made-to-measure carcasses: they choose with the final customer,
they identify what they need and they purchase
what is necessary.
An order arrives at Browns 2000 and is immediately
sent to production, and executed in few hours. Then
it is delivered directly to the final consumer, where
it is installed. Very often, especially in big cities, installers come from outside, so it is convenient to find
the kitchen at its final destination, and costs are optimized as well. With this approach, the "price variant" has a lower impact and profit margins are more
interesting”.
“The value chain is minimized: the drawing is supplied by the installer, goes into production where nesting machines, powerful membrane presses or highspeed edgebanding machines help deliver the order within the day. Very often, design is carried out
in a dedicated area of the company website, where
you can select models, finishing, handles and accessories, set dimensions, choose complements, color, type of drawer or door closure…”.
“Your readers should consider – De Col adds – that
the construction heritage in the United Kingdom is
often “historical”, so it’s almost impossible to implement standard sizes or solutions. Everything is
made to measure, tailor-made; the standard production concerns only few large manufacturers.
We are not talking about big volumes, but rather big
service! An unknown model elsewhere , and even in
England only the best companies work like that”.
We are talking about higher quality production, to the
extent that laser edge banding is justified.
Peter Brown totally believes in the Stefani’s laser technology and he has recently invested in the world’s first
Stefani double-sided first and second pass linked
combination laser edgebanding line. It will be delivered in November 2013 together with the Stefani
“J profile” soft-forming single side edgebander for handle-less doors, another exclusive solution embraced
by Browns 2000.
“Laser edge banding is one of our latest investments”,
Peter Brown said. “In the latest fifteen years we have
spent over 70 million Euros on new machines, but I
was blown away by laser edge banding by Stefani!
It's a wonderful gluing method, offering great results
especially for high-gloss cabinet doors. We switched
from an excellent “Slim line”, which also ensures highquality edge banding, with a virtually invisible glue
line, to a laser machine. The result was so convincing that we immediately purchased a second machine
and decided you can bear higher costs if you can
work with excellent results at high speed.
We have selected all our machines based on quality, and always considering we don't make one thousand identical cabinet doors, but one thousand doors
all different from one another.
In Great Britain, the in-line manufacturing concept is
still dominant amongst large manufacturers, but more

and more companies, also in view of the economic
situation and modified demand structure, realize that
having to deal with large stocks or warehouses of
semifinished materials can be a huge problem…”.
Mr. Brown, how did you choose Scm Group as your
reference technology partner?
“The first experience was an edge banding machine
we really liked. In those years, we had business relationships with other Italian suppliers, but the level of satisfaction was not the same. The rise of nesting technology, an ideal method for our production
patterns, brought us closer to Scm and their “Ergon” machining centres. Today we have sixteen,
which handle virtually all the components we produce; five centers are equipped with handling units
connecting them directly to the sanding line followed
by membrane presses. Having chosen this system,
we have grown much and we can now go from
drawing to finished product in one day.
When customers decide to change their kitchen, they
don’t want to wait. We decided to work to make this
possible, and we accelerated into that direction, which
is basically the same as the batch one everyone is
talking about….
If you allow this expression, our challenge is producing big volumes of made-to-measure elements
for small installers, a sort of contradiction that technology can solve. In addition, each time we see the
opportunity to work differently, faster, better and cheaper, we meet our installers, we inform them about our
projects, what we want to do, and we think together about the best way to implement change. And it
works...”. (l.r.) ■

“BSOLID”: SOFTWARE
FOR NEW PERFORMANCE
Lower costs, short machining time, greater benefits, more competitiveness.
This is the result obtained by Mcm in Cantù, the “home country” of furniture,
thanks to “bSolid”, the new software by Biesse.
Visiting Mcm in Cantù – still a stronghold of Italian furniture, though slightly
“faded" – is like a teaching lesson. Here,
you immediately understand that high
quality furniture always comes from excellent craftsmanship and great expertise, but it would be impossible to
stay in the market – however small and
“niche” – without the aid of technology.
And actually, advanced technology. Including software, because a “custom” solution can revolutionize
high-end furniture production, reducing machining
times and costs. At Mcm – the acronym for MolteniCaldera-Molteni, fifteen employees and strong roots
in the legendary Brianza of the Fifties, founded by Giorgio and Ernesto Molteni with their business partner Augusto Caldera (still working in the company) – they
know this, as they have been experiencing directly for
a long time. And successfully.
They have always produced custom furniture,
unique items that often complete the production of
renowned brands, very famous brands: “…anything
too difficult to manage for them – they told us at
Mcm – is often entrusted to us…”. A great business
card, we must admit.
In the Eighties, the market went
through a transformation phase, and
also at Mcm changes occurred and
the company approached new technology. More versatile machines, working centers, software. A challenge that

pany, namely Mirco Molteni, his
brother Jonni and his cousin Matteo
Molteni, faced in person. With a reference partner
such as Biesse from Pesaro.
“We have always been producing only medium-high
end furniture”, explained Mirco Molteni. “70 percent of our customers are private consumers who
reach us through their architect or interior designer, though our organization enables us to work as
subcontractors and to react to market fluctuations
in a flexible way.
Last year, for instance, we acquired a major customer who placed an order for a significant number of kitchen units for a renovation project. We
are close to one and a half million revenues and we
export 30 percent of our production to Switzerland,
France and Germany”.
Manual skills are still
a key added value for
high-end tailor-made
products.

BIESSE INSIDE IS BACK
From 17 to 19 October 2013, open doors at
Biesse Inside, the traditional open house event
that gathers customers and prospects to Pesaro. An opportunity to see machinery and plants in operation
and experience their contribution to enhanced process
management, with a focus on
flexibility and productivity.
Spotlights on “Winstore”, the
automated warehouse offering effective response to more and more
complex storage needs.
Much space also for the revolutionary software
“bSolid”, an easy and intuitive tool to control
a machine and much more….
Two topics will attract great attention: on one
side nesting, for which Biesse has devised
new solutions, on the other egebanding, with
a system that won the “Visionary” award at the
latest Awfs exhibition in Las Vegas.
The furniture district of Brianza has changed a lot
in the past few decades: how have you reacted to
this trend?
“It was not easy to keep up with this revolution: high
labor costs and low availability of skilled staff have
driven us closer to technology, in order to preserve
certain production standards. We started to invest
in innovation about thirty years ago, taking the most
significant steps in recent years. in 1997 we purchased our first horizontal panel saw, a cantilever
and forklift truck for efficient logistics, saving up to
30 percent in handling operations and transferring
the corresponding resources to furniture production.
We started to work with Biesse in 1992, when we
bought our first working center, a “Rover 464” model that was at the top of the range in those years…
Biesse has always been a reference for us, but today, with “bSolid” software (we illustrated the features of this new poerful software in the May-June
issue of Italianwoodtech, editor’s note), we have
scaled up to new levels. We have collaborated with
them to bring the software closer and closer to user
requirements, to develop this solution into a real tool
for our daily work.
We have been working intensively at this project,

running a five-axis working center, which we selected in order to have a machine with virtually unlimited capabilities. And we did the same with the
new “bSolid”, which has become gradually easier to use as it approached its final shape.
For almost one year now, the software has been running onboard our “Rover Alpha”, a prototype of current “Rover Bg”, and everything has become
much easier and intuitive”.
How has your work changed?
“First of all, we are no longer dependent on subcontractors equipped with five-axis machines,
we are self-sufficient also for complex operations.
We machine unique parts, whereby the ease of use
of “bSolid” ensures short cycle time: shorter
time from order entry to production start, shorter time
to manufacture the required elements and move on
to assembly. It is so “comfortable” that we are transferring more and more operations, even simple one,
to the working center driven by “bSolid”.
What’s the difference with three-axis software you
used before?
“As I mentioned, in one hour we can complete the
design and send it to the machine, while in the past
it took one day. “bSolid” is intuitive, parametric, more
powerful and versatile especially for surfaces. Just
think of a craftsman who is approaching the world
of working centers. He has attended a training
course, but he receives an order
for a specific element and cannot
remember how it can be made.
With “bSolid” you simply define
geometry with few clicks, follow instructions, and the screen displays
the workpiece ready for production, while the software develops
all operations to manufacture it.
What can I add?
Today we receive an order in
.dwg format (a “classical” design
software format, editor’s note) and
the drawing is immediately “translated” into the machine logic”.
“I must say – adds Mirco Molteni
– that we have created an internal
technical department, and now
things are much easier because
we have valuable specific skills;
however, even companies without
a technical department can benefit from significant process simplification with “bSolid”, both for
basic and for complex projects.
Once a design is in the system,
"bSolid" sets up the necessary operations, up to the required tooling.
If you design a complex part and
you realize you have made a mistake, you don’t need to re-compile
the entire program from scratch:
you just insert the required modifications and you’re done.
The new Biesse software executes all checks and shows a 3D simulation,
highlighting possible issues of any nature, thanks
to its collision detection system. So, in few
steps and very easily, an operator can program the
workpiece, check toolpaths, identify the most
suitable tool and review all machining steps, up to
the final result. And finally, production can be
launched in full safety and reliability!
Besides the huge potential of parameter-based
changes directly onboard the machine, allowing to
execute the same operation on two different panels
without any additional programming, I really appreciate the artificial intelligence of “bSolid”,
those processes that, once the geometry has been
acquired, allow the software to "think about" and sug-
gest possible operations to achieve the final result.
Another plus is the collision detection system I have
already mentioned, tuned to the machine's numerical control, therefore absolutely realistic and reliable.
Two more solutions
“made in Biesse”
installed at Mcm.
“Rover 30” working
center and “Ebl110L”
panel saw.
“Collaborating with Biesse to develop a software
that could take into account our requirements and
working methods was really a great opportunity”,
Molteni concludes. “They have been able to understand what we need, and to create an advanced
tool that is also easy to use, setting even the most
“conservative” joiner at ease...”.

A proven exhibition, with a valuable audience, and

there are no worries for overlapping dates with Made,

Carlo Giobbi.
Here we are, everything is
ready. A few more days,
and Sicam – the event to
be held in Pordenone,
completely dedicated to
semifinished materials,
supplies and components
– is starting off. There is no
need for long introductions, as we believe the story of this event (this year celebrating the fifth edition, though its origins date much farther back...)
is well known to everyone. The same is true for its
role of annual even, only second to Interzum, which
is a biennial exhibition.
News for this year starts with a different calendar:
the exhibition – running from 15 to 18 October – is
not going from Wednesday to Saturday, but from
Tuesday to Friday, as decided by exhibitors themselves.
This is no actually new, as organizers informed industry people and press immediately after the exhibitors’ opinion poll

The event has become a leading exhi-

“If you love your job, you
never get bored”, he answers with his usual confidence. “If you work with
passion, if you do your best,
that word has no meaning.
And I add that you don’t
have to run after new ideas
for their own sake; after all, it is not easy to do something unexpected. We are in a mature economic and
historical period: much has been done, much has
already been invented. Nevertheless, if you have
better ideas, you can always find opportunities. But
let me tell you that, at least in fair organization, in
this kind of services to companies, you cannot start
a new age.
Many things have changed, we have experienced
many adventures, we have seen many stories. We
like the stories where we work well, we give all we
can to our exhibitors and our visitors in terms of service and hosting, so that they can focus on their business.
The “Sicam model” – if you allow his definition,
which I have always found excessive – aims exactly
at unifying all services to leave all exhibitors and
visitors exclusively to their business”.
So, what's left to do?
“As usual, work hard to keep the results achieved,
without relaxing. I don’t need to tell you that, in times
like these, it’s not bad keeping a constant trend…
We are also recording a reduction of square meters, but it's just few percent points below the average value of the previous four shows, and this year
again we are around 13 thousand net square meters.
You know better than me that many companies have
closed down, many others have merged, more
again have been taken over. On the whole, the number of actors has decreased, but I repeat we cannot complain.
However, let me stress that in Pordenone you will
find all leading companies in the different industries,
and we are proud to host major multinational companies such as Akzo Nobel, Porcellanosa, Renolit and Kronoswiss, just to mention a few names: in
a year when everyone says the Italian market is
standing still, it’s not easy to draw the attention of
big names...”.
A solid event, that the market shows to appreciate.
What about collective stands? Could they open up
new opportunities?
“I keep saying that collective delegations are our
core business. We have always done that, that’s
where we come from. Since long ago, in different
industries and different
countries. Our company
Business International has
always done and keeps
doing that, although it is
not a matter of business
for us; the purpose is to
support exhibitors willing
to approach certain markets, leveraging our experience and organization
skills”.
We repeat it: nothing to get bored...
“… and I repeat I don’t know what that word means.
Sicam is a matter of quality, and as such it requires
constant commitment. The problem is not selling
more space, because Pordenone is not a big expo
center and we cannot grow beyond a certain size.
But this is a satisfactory formula for our exhibitors,
whom we constantly ask advice and suggestions. We want to do what our customers need, and
SOME FIGURES...
Pordenone is ready to host the fifth edition of
Sicam, the international exhibition of components, semifinished materials and accessories for the furniture industry.
Here are a few figures to give you an idea of
what you are talking about: in 2012 there were
17 thousand visitors, 30 percent from abroad.
The overall figure is relevant (basically stable,
compared to the show record, almost a miracle right now…), as well as the fact that operators came to Pordenone from 94 countries;
the international scope of visitors is an added
value that even organizers would not have
imagined few years ago. Visitor figures from
Europe were excellent (more than 70 percent
of foreign visitors, with Germany, Russia,
France and Spain in the lead), and "growing
interest" from Turkey and Asia.
Exhibitors were 500, one more or one less, and
also among them many interesting companies
came from across the border…
Dates have already been fixed and communicate also for next year, from Tuesday 14 to
Friday 17 October 2014, again in Pordenone.
the recipe we have created keeps working, as
facts prove…”.
For the first time, you will
have a technology manufacturer...
“Cefla Group requested
and got an information
booth to greet their customers, as many of them
exhibit at our show, and
other operators who visit the show and can be interested in their offer. There will not be any machine,
I want to stress this, because this is not our business; there will only be painted semifinished materials, produced with Cefla technology by their customers.
An experience that I consider positive and might
be extended to other exhibitors, but always with the
same approach”. (l.r.) ■

THE EDGE IN ITALY GETS BIGGER

NEW COMPANY
“The growth of a company follows a clearly defined
route which we all must adhere to": so spoke the
patron of Giplast Group spa, Giuseppe Marozzi:
"competent managers, efficient business organization, accurately-sized production capacity".
Today, after the acquisition of Flexibord spa, Giplast Group spa is ready to meet all of these requirements.
“We needed to adapt the business organization to the new
headquarters and the new goals
we had to pursue”.
From the handicraft business
created by grandpa Adamo to the
creation of Giplast Srl in the early Nineties, it was an easy step.
Now the incorporation as a stock
company (S.p.A.) indicates a
clear project: refocus the company with a strong industrial approach and prepare it to collect
funds in a different way.
"Companies are currently experiencing a critical period due to
the credit crunch, therefore we
need to seek and create optimal
financial conditions to be competitive in Italy and most of all
worldwide. Sure, it is not easy to
accept losing absolute control on your own company, but if you want to create a stronger and more
reliable business, then you have to adapt your attitude and envision a different way of doing business, closer to real market needs and trends".
Given this premise, we can state that Giplast Group
is ready to face all types of commercial and financial
challenges.
NEW GENERATION
NEW DIMENSIONS
A new generation of entrepreneurs is ready to seize
the company’s steering wheel.
Patrizio Marozzi, currently sales manager of the
group, is showing his competence and skills in the
field. With strong technical skills acquired in many
years spent on the plant floor, he represents the third
generation, after grandfather Adamo and father
Giuseppe,
who was the main creator of the success and growth
of Giplast Group spa.
"You cannot invent the future, you build it day after day with commitment and determination, while
ensuring quality, continuity and reliability to the companies that put their trust in you is the best way to
support your marketing”, continues Ceo Marozzi.
"Our company pursued harmonic and balanced
growth until 2008", Marozzi continues, "but after the
devastating economic crisis of recent years, we had
to renovate both production and organization, involving all departments. We laid the foundations to
reverse the trend and start growing again, investing in modernization and research while everyone
else was cutting costs.
At the beginning of 2012 we saw early results, with
a 15 percent growth trend, resulting from reaffirmed
customer trust and the contribution of new products like methacrylate edges.
We also launched a new plant for the production
of laser edges. In the second half of 2012, we
recorded an upsurge in orders, which forced us to

accelerate our development plans. It was necessary to adapt the size of our plants to the increasing pressure from our customers. In that period we
decided to buy a competitor, and specific events
guided us towards Flexibord spa. In September
2012 we met the former owners and, after the initial approach, we signed a preliminary agreement
in December 2012. Negotiations continued with alternate and uncertain phases until May; then, after drafting the final contracts, on August 2, 2013,
we acquired the entire stock capital of Flexibord.
Having closed the transaction, we finalized the reorganization of production at Giplast Group spa:
the historical site in Giulianova (Teramo), specializing in customer service, guarantees quick and
flexible production across more than two thousand
colors, thanks to several small and medium-sized
plants. In Luzzara (Reggio Emilia), the Flexibord spa
site, we will focus on few colors and large batches, leveraging plants that can manufacture Abs or
Pvc foils up to 700 mm width.
The Flexibord plants, that were out of size for a highly fragmented market, have acquired an essential
role in our development project, as we can leverage the commercial and production synergies of
both sites".
With total 50 thousand kilos per day capacity, 140
employees, over 25 thousand square meters of indoor facilities, and consolidated turnover exceeding 26 million Euros, Giplast Group will try to
reach direct European competitors in the short term,
establishing themselves as unique Italian reference
for plastic edges.
Service, reliability and size will be the trumps to conquer a more and more demanding market. ■

THE “URBAN MATTER” RANGE
TAKING CARE OF QUALITY
The world of Ica Group
(www.icagroupspa.com) is
continually evolving, with an
unerring focus on the latest design trends and on the requirements flagged up by designers and architects. For
this reason, the R&D laboratory
has dedicated its energies to
the development of wood coatings with a distinctly metropolitan flavor.
The “Urban Matter” range −
composed of high-impact,
material-like effects − embodies a style that's at once contemporary, refined,
realistic and "imperfect" (due to the deliberate unevenness of the coated surface). It's a style that's very
much inspired by the everyday. Using this range, it
is possible to produce surfaces with “Cement” and
“Corten” effects, retaining the rough appearance of
the material being simulated while also offering the
warmth to the touch that only wood can provide. The
Urban Matter range can be deployed for a plethora of creative uses, giving the imagination free rein,
with the potential to come up with an infinite variety
of ever-changing and unique effects.
An industrial look and “powdery” colors characterize the “cement-effect” finish. The range encompasses three gray tones, which are the fruit of Ica
Group's research into the latest trends in contemporary interior design.
The effect is produced through a coating cycle that
combines the use of the water-based base coat,
mixed using a spatula, with the special effect “Vellumatt”, in three different shades.
The “Corten” effect embodies a contemporary style
that is even more "lived-in", with an uneven surface
characterized by light and dark nuances that reproduce the deep coloration of natural “Corten” steel.
The effect is produced through a coating cycle, that
combines the matt black base coat with water-based
aging agents, flower yellow and oxide red, with the
color movement being generated by means of a jet
of compressed air on the coated surface. ■

DANZER SHOWCASED NEW PRODUCTS
At interzum 2013, the
world’s leading trade fair
for the furniture supplier industry and interior design,
the global hardwood and
veneer specialist Danzer
(www.danzer.com) showcased their product range.
With the new materials and
visual appearances, customers can turn their ideas
into reality – which explains
this year’s slogan of Danzer’s fair booth: Imagine.
“Linea”, “Figura”
und “Vintage Style”
Examples for new surfaces
are Danzer “Linea” und
Danzer “Figura”. Danzer
“Linea” is a cut-to-size high
quality veneer, which exhibits an attractive rift cut appearance. Made from the
real species, industrial
process ensures a reliable
and cost-effective supply.
Danzer presented “Linea” in

An impressive example for
the use of 3D-Veneers is

Visitors of the Danzer fair booth couldparticipate daily in a drawing for
Danzer’s natural “WoodCover for iPad®”, which

Danzer’s ability to combine
wood with other materials is
highlighted by an extraordinary example from the
automotive industry: “Aluminum Beaufort”, a development for German car
maker Audi, exhibits aluminum pinstripes as an elegant accent. ■
OECE (Sherwin-Williams)
SAYERLACK
PAINTS FOR GLASS
“TOTAL BLOCK” AND “TOTAL WHITE”
Creating measure-made solutions to turn customer
ideas into reality is a core value for Oece (a SherwinWilliams brand), an established supplier of innovative solutions for high-impact glass painting, addressed to the furniture and design sectors.
Oece delivers strength and beauty to glass surfaces
with a wide portfolio of
customizable solutions.
Besides matte lacquers, they offer a line
of special effects for
glass, delivering original solutions to innovative companies, while
responding to all creative challenges and
visual requirements.
Water-based pigmented finishes for glass
offer specific sustainability and environmental protection features. Versatility, excellent adhesion and inalterable chemical-physical properties are the result of advanced production technology ensuring original and innovative chromatic results, meeting the most sophisticated requirements.
Simple application, a wide range of available solutions and customization options make Oece special
paints a valuable and effective tool for handicraft and
industrial furniture manufacturers and architects.
A series of special effects can be applied to glass
or wood, with different methods, to achieve the same
final visual impact.
Metal effects, glittering “Stardust”, sand, drops, iridescent, fluorescent, craquelé, marble, granite and
mirror effects are just the most popular special finishes by Oece, mainly consisting of water-based
products conceived for innovative high-quality applications.
“Safety Glass” is the water-based finish designed
to guarantee the safety of glazing and mirrors. It creates a thin film that, in case of accidental crash, retains all glass or mirror fragments, preventing damage and wounds. ■
The R&D laboratory of Sherwin-Williams Italy
(www.sherwin-williams.com), after intensive research work, has achieved results with water-based
products that so far could only be obtained only
with a solvent-based cycle. That’s the origin of Sayerlack “Total Block” and Sayerlack “Total White”,
respectively a transparent water-based sealer
and a white water-based paint.Until today, bleached
and natural effects on oak and woods with a high
tannin content in general, could be obtained only
using solvent-based stains and solvent-based
acrylic coating systems. This is due to the fact that
traditional water-based products extract compounds from wood, such as tannins and its derivatives, and bring them to the surface, where they
oxidize when they come into contact with the air
and assume various shades and cause streaks or
blotches of yellow, green or grey. The new transparent sealer “Total
Block Acv2306/00”
and the new shade
of white “Total White
Acv2306/13” are formulated based on
an innovative, highperformance binding agent which
makes it possible to
obtain bleached oak
and natural oak effects on woods with a high tannin content, using a fully waterborne coating system. Water-based technology with minimized
volatile organic compound emissions, protects the
environment and human health. Tannin is blocked
during the first application of “Acv2306/00”, while
the substrate is sealed during the subsequent application phases. The products with the code
“Acv2306/XX” can be overcoated with any waterbased primer or topcoat, avoiding the formation of
tannin stains. The shade “Total White Acv2306/13”
(applied using spray + rag, or paintbrush) is used
either pure or diluted with the transparent sealer
“Total Block Acv2306/00” to obtain different gradations of white. The product “Total Block
Acv2306/00” is spray-applied as a sealer and, once
dry, a water-based primer coat can be applied followed by a water-based topcoat, to achieve a natural oak effect. ■

LATEST NEWS FROM CLEAF
Cleaf’s (www.cleaf.it) constant research and innovation have found further and prestigious acknowledgment in the award “High Product Quality" of
2013 Interzum - intelligent material & design”.
Centre-piece of Interzum, the international fair
and acclaimed show-case of the field, the award
selected Cleaf’s Fusion surface in recognition of
its innovative aspects of material, function and design, within a highly-selective list of candidates.
The Cleaf's exploration in style and technology carries over references from the worlds of design, architecture and fashion, adopting their codes and
then re-writing them on surfaces in a new alphabet
of leading-edge technical and functional performance, as well as tactile and visual content.
Research, innovation and technology are the distintive features of the “Fusion” line of products,
brought forth by the commitment and passion of
Cleaf Research Lab. “Fusion” results from the incorporation of textiles and threads to panels and
laminated surfaces through state of the art technology, and provides the world of interior design with
highly innovative solutions in both aesthetics and
functionality.
“Fusion” is creativity: a new surface with a versatile, original and eclectic personality, interpreting up
to date trends through surprising textures and
palettes to offer projects and productions a whole
new range of solutions in style.
The entire line was developed by Italian expertise:
high profile techniques and processing for a product of top quality and creativity, further proof of
Cleaf’s commitment to innovation.
Inspired by the soft wood of red pines, “Millennium”
finishing features the very same, characteristically
polished and textural quality, especially noticeable

to the touch. The main trait of this new finishing is its
foremost flaming look, creating intriguing visual effects with an unpredictable alternation of opaque and
polished levels.
The contrast makes for a truly remarkable and impactful decorative design.
Warm and refined, with a vintage look, “Engadina”
is a new finishing inspired by the typical grain of
sanded pinewood, available in a wide range of colors. A pleasant and vaguely retro solution, in
keeping with Cleaf distinctive style of re-elaborating traditional aesthetics within a perfectly contemporary perspective.
Exciting new reflexes for the new surface “Kristall”,
the result of the consistent and painstaking work at
Cleaf research lab.
B.M.
“MADE IN ITALY”
“Kristall” explores the reflection of lights and images,
its polished surface elicits visions, feelings, and light
effects.
The color offer, ranging from white nuances through
warm and cold gray shades to dark blue, reflects
the latest trends and style in design, emphasizing
the surfaces distinctive personality.
The range can also be coordinated with “Tss” Cleaf
products, to generate amazing combinations. Besides its specific aesthetics, the significant depth
of the acrylic material makes Kristall highly reflective and especially resistant to scratching, spots and
humidity, for the widest possible versatility in interior design applications.
“Syncro Coated” is a specific final varnishing
process applied to “Tss” panels and generated by
Cleaf Research Lab in cooperation with expert craftsmen. It was brought forth as a revisiting of coating
and weathering techniques, with the aim to accentuate and emphasize the texture of finishings.
The color also plays a major role in the final look
of surfaces, as it is employed to fill in or subtract,
depending on the depth desired, yet always to an
impactful and remarkable effect.
And then, the new “Azimut” embossing is inspired
by the lively texture of cedar wood, aged and worn
by the passing of time. The wood grain evokes
memories and times long past, for a warm and enveloping atmosphere. The grooves bear a reassuring witness to the past, carrying it into contemporary life style. Cleaf is offering Azimut in a
range of opaque and solid colors, ranging from optic white to pitch-black. ■

A SOLID GROWTH FOR NASTROFLEX
Nastroflex (www.nastroflex.it), a historic company
located in the Veneto Region and leader in the field
of abrasives all over the
world, is witnessing a solid
growth: its turnover has increased by 13.5 percent
during the first seven
months of 2013 compared
to last year.
Founded in 1970, the company of Ponte di Piave is
one of the most important
and internationally recognized in the production of
coated abrasives for sanding with a wide application
in the wood and furniture
sectors, as well as engineering, textile, ceramic,
footwear, glassmaking and
tanning.
In spite of the long crisis that
has hit crucial sectors for Nastroflex − such as that of wood
and furniture − the company
has successfully increased
its business and aims to reach
a turnover of 19 million Euros
by the end of 2013.
In production terms, this
corresponds to nearly 6
million square metres of
abrasive papers and cloth
produced, and over one
million belts and rolls, which
are the most used shapes in
the furniture industry.
In the face of aggressive
markets and fierce competition, Nastroflex has been
able to maintain its leadership and continues to offer
its clients the highest quality, efficiency and competitiveness. The use of abrasives is a crucial step in the
execution of a product and
often the deciding factor in
its success or failure. Consider for a moment particular finishes such as polished and matte in the first
place, to understand the
importance of this process.
As for Nastroflex markets,
the best news comes from
abroad with double-digit
growth in Brazil and Chile,
a trend which is confirmed
in Central America.
In Europe, they are growing
at a fast pace, especially in
Germany, Poland, the UK
and Scandinavia, while in
Italy there are signs of a
slow, yet difficult, recovery:
in the first seven months of
this year there was a drop of
-5 percent, but recovery is
expected by the end of the
year. The Middle East – a
traditional market for the
Venetian group − is once
again particularly dynamic
with a 33 percent increase
over last year, which bodes
well. In total, the foreign
52 XYLON INTERNATIONAL September-October 2013
markets amount to 43 percent of Nastroflex’s turnover.
Over the next few months
the company aims to exceed 50 percent.
Gianluca Pellicciari, Ceo of
Nastroflex, commenting on
the positive results of the
first part of the year,
stressed that the company
has hit major strategic objectives: "The growth of Nastroflex, in challenging times
such as these, is due to a
process of reorganization
undertaken between 2010
and 2011 that has led to
greater efficiency, quality
and innovation. All of our
departments are currently
fully engaged with our product and maintain a close relationship with our customers. We have also begun to invest in young people by launching a hiring
programme and ad hoc vocational training. Many of
our most innovative solutions are enhanced by involving the supply chain
and the main producers of
sanding and painting machines and systems, including Cefla, Costa, VietBiesse. Customer training
and assistance are our
greatest strengths: we
reach our customers in
every part of the world, test
the machines next to them,
and apply all that is needed to optimise their performance. Impeccable quality, training and assistance
are the reasons for our
growth".
In sharp contrast with what
has been and is still happening in our country, Nastroflex relies on Italian workmanship to assure quality:
they have brought back “in
house” processing that requires tight control by company technicians. To this
end, Nastroflex launched
a multi-year investment plan
in 2012 that is already bearing fruit in terms of even
greater quality and efficiency. ■

functional advantages of
modern tambour door systems. The perfect complement for kitchens and offices, Rehau’s solution offers
new design options and customization of spaces, thanks
to its linear, compact design.
“Rauvolet pure-line” transforms the "slat appearance"
of conventional tambour door

combines the advantages
of polymer tambour door
systems, such as excellent
running properties, space

OMNIDECOR
FERRARI
PRECIOUS REFLEXES
HINGE WITH INTEGRATED DAMPER
…such are the effects that OmniDecor (www.omnidecor.net) has been creating for years, through
a more and more in-depth and productive interplay
of know-how, technological experimentation and
state-of-the-art design.
Among the recent Falegnameria 1946 releases,
“Fabric” finishing, by Dutch designer Kiki van
Eijk, has found an innovative and enchanting application. The pattern, applied to a historical OmniDecor product, “DecorFlou Mirror”, results in an
amazing surface, rich in light, reflexes and sophisticated visual geometries.
By combining fabric “patches” and a mirror, the design acquires a powerful visual impact through subtle threads of light, ever changing with the perspective, light and surrounding objects, thus
transforming any environment.
Falegnameria 1946 employed this original and
unique surface to create a full range of bedroom
furnishings, emerging from Omnidecor research as
a treasure cove of light and reflexes.
The main concept of project is the use of mirrored
surfaces instead of the more traditional wood in the
manufacturing of the major components for a contemporary bed-room: spacious wardrobes, chests
of drawers, bedside tables.
The beauty and care for detail in all items focuses attention exclusively on their refined quality. ■
Ferrari, the Italian hardware furniture manufacturer
(www.ferrarispa.it), during the last Interzum in Köln,
has introduced to its customers the new soft-closing hinge with integrated damper.
This hinge is equipped with a hydraulic damper that
is concealed under the hinge arm, ensuring a silent
and smooth closing of doors.
Through a lever on the hinge arm the damping effect can be easily adjusted.
Ferrari hinges are available also in different finishing
to comply with the needs of the most demanding
furniture makers and meet the last design trends.
Hinges with higher finishing, for example, are specific for environments with aggressive elements to
the metal where an high quality guarantee it is needed with the same aestetic.
The ancient brass finishing was developed following
the latest trends in furniture design, in this way
hinges can be even more integrated into cabinets,
especially in matt lacquered furniture or the darkest kinds of wood.
Ferrari is creativity, intelligence, expertise and knowhow applied to the furniture industry.
We believe in constant innovation, that is why we

CONFALONIERI
FORGING TRADITION
“TOUCH” SYSTEM: INVISIBLE HANDLE
In Carpeneda di Vobarno, near Brescia, a land
where metalworking is part of the historical identity, Fama International (www.famainternational.it)
has built its success on a solid and heartfelt tradition. The material is in fact forged according to
an ancient technique that has remained unchanged over the centuries, thereby reflecting passion, skills, and
the love for the
craft.
All this has led
the company to
the creation of a
range that stands out for its artisanal excellence: Fama Italian Design, a
section dedicated to the creation of handles
and accesso ries for doors,
windows and furniture. This range
consists of handmade bronze
products.
Fama allows designers, clients,
and architects to
dream and have a product created especially for
them. In addition to the products available in the
catalogue, the company can turn any requirement
into reality, from the idea, passing through the wooden model and casting process, to tailor-made creations. ■
“Touch” is a furniture opening system (international
patent) made by Confalonieri (www.gruppoconfalonieri.com).
It 's totally hidden. A new idea of furniture handle:
minimal, simple, elegant and customizable directly
by the manufacturer. The system allows a movement that reveals the socket, but the material, finish and the same handle will be implemented directly by the furniture manufacturer, so as to create a fully integrated opening solution.
Vertical or horizontal. It can also be used for sliding doors. Thanks to the flexibility of the system and
its chameleon-like adaptability, “Touch” always
guarantees a different look to the cabinet.
The system is composed of a bar of aluminum and
some (at least two) hinges. The bar allows the continuity with the door and the perfect alignment with
the hinges.
The grip cover must be made of Mdf, which will be
(depending on the choice of the manufacturer / designer) the same finish or a finish in contrast with
the door. Decorative materials (mirror, laminate ...)
can be placed on the cover of the handle for a different characterization.
Given the enormous success on the market, Confalonieri has studied a new evolution. At Interzum
was premiered and at Sicam there will be the presentation of the final version of the opening system
with “Touch” damped closure which increases
both comfort and elegance. ■

NEW DECOR TRENDS BY PFLEIDERER
Pfleiderer (www.pfleiderer.com) presented its new
world at last Interzum in
Cologne, the world's leading trade fair for suppliers to
the furniture industry and interior finishing. With a new
management and product
structure, working under a
strong umbrella brand, the
company completely restructured its business and already is seeing the many
advantages of its new world
coming to fruition.
It was not without reason that
green, the colour of sustainability and ecology, is the
favourite of trend researchers.
With its new decors “Carambola”, “Granny”, “Smith” and
“Lime”, Pfleiderer focuses on
three shades of green that
blend in very well with natural
woods. The same goes for the
new range of yellow hues in
Pfleiderer's decor collection:
“Curcuma” and “Saffron”
brighten up dark areas.
Also new are two completely different oak reproduc-
tions, each available in two
variants.
The dark and rustic “Salina
Oak” creates a powerful impression, which looks great
on worktops in combination
with light woods. Whereas
the lighter “Shetland Oak”
recedes and is a perfect
match to furniture with an elegant solid wood character.
The same goes for “Madison
Walnut”, a fine walnut decor,
newly interpreted by Pfleiderer for its latest collection.
entice visitors to have a close
look at them, touch them
and marvel at their impressive depth, maximum authenticity and nearly forgotten handicraft skills.
Ten out of those 16 textures
are also available in Pfleiderer's unique “Dstsystem”. This means:
these 10 textures can
be combined with a
total of 180 decors
and 16 core materials.
At present, the wood
texture "Montana" is
very popular. Its
unique glossy-matt effect allows the pores
to shine while its surfaces remain matt.
The expressive, linear surface "Linea" plays with light
and shadow as well. It’s fine,
irregularly lined texture enhances plain woods and upgrades plain and metallic
decors.
The portfolio that Pfleiderer
presented at Interzum 2013
is anything but superficial: 16
different surface textures will
With “Authentic wood pore”
Pfleiderer has created another wood texture that is
very close to natural wood.
The matt wood grain of "Natural wood pore" (NH) gives
wood finishes the characteristics of real, untreated freshly-cut wood. With its evenly
distributed pores, it gives a
very natural impression. Another highlight is "High
Gloss". Whether directly coated or applied on Duropal
Hpl, this texture exceeds by
far all existing glossy finishes.
The "Enhanced High Gloss"
variant is abrasion resistant
and used for selected decors
as Hpl.
An outstanding example is
the new Duropal Hpl texture
"Hammered effect", a tribute
to traditional handicraft techniques. With this evenly embossed texture that looks
like hammer strokes and enhances any plain decor, Pfleiderer won the "interior innovation award 2013”. ■

EGGER: “TIMELESS-SPIRIT OF THE TIME”
The new Egger decors are defined
by even more extensive
combination possibilities
and new surface developments.
The Tyrolean wood-based material manufacturer Egger (www.egger.com) is presenting its new decors
for the furniture industry this year at the Interzum 2013
trade fair under the dual trend “Timeless - Spirit of
the Time”. Here, the focus is on strong accent colours,
timeless wood types and entirely new combination
possibilities. New surfaces under the motto “Tangible – Visible” are also coming into focus, led by the
synchronised pore named “Feelwood”. “Over the last
few years, neutral colours were mainly combined with
lively types of wood. Now we also have strong uni
colours for use as accents available to us. In place
of expressive wood, balanced and timeless wood
types are making a comeback. These are then combined with neutral and/or light accent colours,”
Klaus Monhoff, Head of Design and Decor Management, explains the duality of the “Timeless - Spirit of the Time” trend. New decors are offering a never-before-seen range of combination possibilities.
Egger and its partner akustik+ were honoured with
the highest award “Best of the Best” at the interzum award: “intelligent material & design 2013”.
The acoustically effective solutions with custom

perforation patterns that were submitted, convinced
the jury of “an outstanding service that sets new standards for form and function in the industry”.
Only nine products were honoured with the “Best of
the Best” award at this year’s interzum award out of
a total of 200 submissions from 16 countries. Egger
and akustik+ submitted acoustically effective solutions with custom perforation patterns in the “Materials and Surfaces” category.
CLIC TECHNOLOGY
FOR PORTABLE FURNITURE
Egger presented pre-fabricated furniture components
with clic joints for the first time at Interzum. Egger has
already established itself as a successful pioneer with
the clic joint in the laminate flooring segment. Now
the wood-based material manufacturer has developed
this technology further for use in furniture construction. As a partner Egger will support its furniture industry customers for shared product development,
in addition to licensing the patented system for in-
novative furniture designs in cooperation with Unilin. The clic system makes it possible to assemble furniture without tools. Instead of glue, screws or dowels,
the individual components are
joined using a tongue & groove
joint system milled into the material, reminiscent of the click principle used in laminate flooring. As
a result, end customers need
nothing more than their hands to
assemble the clic system. Multiple benefits of the clic
system: Disassembly in case of a move is just as
straightforward as assembling the furniture – without
any structural damage whatsoever. Powerful accents
and Egger is presenting countless design possibilities with an extensive selection of decors, material
combinations and the “Zoom” Design Guide under
the motto “Everything from one source” at Interzum.
The “Zoom” Collection encompassing around 270
decors allows planners and fabricators to realise
countless combination possibilities from the 12
decor worlds used to classify the wood types, uni
colours and material reproductions. Thanks to the
building block principle of the “Zoom” Collection, a
wide variety of room atmospheres can be created to
meet the highest standards for residential and commercial applications. All Egger coreboards can be
laminated with the “Zoom” decors and the respective matching edging is available as well.
In addition, digital printing offers virtually endless possibilities for furniture construction. For example, the
twelve digital printing decors in the “Zoom” Collection offer unusual design possibilities even for small
order volumes. The new edition of the “Zoom” Design
Guide features 29 furnishing situations in private and
public room sets, presenting a range of design and
combination possibilities with “Zoom” decors. Along
with design suggestions, it provides inspiration for projects, provides material recommendations, supports
the fabricator with aids for customer consultations and
is a practical and straightforward tool. The practical
binder with 29 main cards that hold original laminate
samples, 29 printed secondary cards with 2 combination suggestions each and four application
cards makes decor consultations far easier. The “Inspirations” book included with the Guide picks up
on current trends that underlie decor development
at Egger. The broad range of applications and examples accounts for all decor groups in the “Zoom”
Collection. The application images
in the Design Guide are also coordinated with the Virtual Design
Studio (VDS), a visualisation software for designing and presenting decors in room sets.
SOME ECONOMICAL
DATA
The wood-based material manufacturer Egger finished the
2012/2013 business year with a
preliminary 11 percent increase in turnover against
the last year. Preliminary group turnover for the past
2012/2013 business year amounts to approximately Eur 2.2 billion. (turnover of the Egger Group in
2011/12 was Eur 2.0 billion).
Rising raw material prices and the European government debt crisis continue to represent challenges. The company is confident in the
2013/2014 business year and continues
to invest in its existing plants.
“Notwithstanding the crises in some European countries and the problematic
shortage of wood as a resource, the business year came to a favourable conclusion for us. This proves that we are on the
right track, both with our strategic decision
for investments and growth and with our
product developments,” says Ulrich Bühler, Head of
Marketing and Sales Egger Group.
The outlook for the 2013/2014 business year is cautiously optimistic.
While the government debt crises in the Eurozone continues to represent the risk of a downturn and although
the poor development of the employment markets in
some EU member states could continue to weaken
domestic demand, overall economic growth of 0.5
percent is expected in 2013 for Germany, as a driver of the European economy.
Egger believes that market development in the
Dach region and Eastern Europe will remain stable,
notwithstanding differences between individual
countries. Minor growth is expected in Great Britain,
while stagnation or even shrinkage can be expected for Southern Europe. Over the long term, the debt
crisis may affect the wood-based material industry
by slowing down demand as prosperity in Europe declines, and by promoting ongoing consolidation
among suppliers, the logistics sector, industry, distributors and producers. ■

OSTERMANN:
NOT ALL WHITES ARE THE SAME!
Ostermann

edgings
to its range.
On its own each
board/edging
looks white.
If you place the
various shades
next to each
other, then
differences
quickly become
clear.
In western culture the colour
white is associated with
happiness and cleanliness.
That’s probably why it is
such a popular colour in
furniture. However, not all
whites are the same. In Ostermann’s (www.ostermann.eu)
extensive range there are more
than 80 different white edgings.
In commercial construction the
colour white is still the main
colour and ever popular for
laboratories, clinics and
doctors’ practices. In the
furniture industry white is
once again becoming
very popular. White furniture used to be more of
a standard colour, but for
some years now the ‘colour without colour’ is a genuine design trend.
Not only are more and more cars, computers and mobile phones produced in white, but
in the home this bright furniture colour is increasingly making a comeback. In shop fitting, cool white
– frequently in high gloss – is the trend and shows
products and goods to their best advantage
through deliberately minimalist design.
In the Ral colour palette there are seven different
shades of white: from oyster white, cream and grey
white over signal white and pure white to traffic white
and papyrus white. The percentage of pigments determines the whiteness. On its own each Ral
shade looks white. If you place the various shades

next to each other the differences quickly become
clear. So it is with good reason that architects and
planners define an exact shade for white furniture
in shop fitting and commercial construction. Only
by doing this can we be sure that the desired shade
of white is consistently observed. This applies not
only to the surfaces but also to the matching edges.
In the Ostermann range of white edgings there are
many more variations apart from the seven Ral
shades. Ostermann has selected the matching
edges for more than 65 European board manufacturers. Ostermann’s extraordinary variety of
white edgings has been made possible by the fact
that almost every manufacturer has the popular
white surfaces in its range.
SURFACE FINISH
Apart from the various shades of white, it is mainly the style and the surface finish which differentiate the individual white edgings. That’s why Ostermann has smooth and super matt, gloss and high
gloss white edgings in its range. The styles range
from minipearl to ash pore, wood pore linear and
wood structure to edgings with textile and stone
style finish. In addition there are the popular light
edgings in various materials e.g. in ABS, in 3-D
acrylic edgings and melamine as well as T-bar edgings. Not to mention that the edgings are available
from Ostermann in many different widths and
thicknesses.

Maco srl (www.maco.it), leader in the production of
adjustable push-latches, is happy to show the last
product.
It’s a concealed push-latch which has two main characteristics: functionality combined to aesthetic.
Functionality: you can conceal this push-latch also
in furnitures of reduced thickness, because you don’t
need to make a hole in the furniture, but just a milling.
Aesthetic: the push-latch has an elegant design, of
strong impact, which makes the furniture even
more precious.
There are two versions available: with neodymium
magnet (art. 0476) or with shock-absorber (art. 0477).
Both of them have a stroke of 14 millimetres and they
are adjustable till 3 millimetres. They’re available in
the light grey and nickel painted colours. ■
New in Ostermann range: “High gloss” edgings to
match the metallic finish of Pfleiderer Design Collection. Gloss remains the trend. And that’s why
Metallic-Look is exactly what you need. As the latest trends is to move towards more glitz and glamour as well as delicate pastel tones for interior designs. Ostermann edgings matching the Pfleiderer Design Collection meet all requirements as they
are available in beige, mango, platinum, mint,
nougat, gold and crystal. You can get it in 23x2mm
and even in small quantities from 1 meter.
In contrast to the high gloss level of more than 85
gloss units, Ostermann supplies “Super matt”
edgings in every length from just 1 metre and upwards. They are available in every width from 16 100 mm. All edgings are also available laser compatible or with hot melt adhesive upon request. Deliveries always come with a film covering in order

INNOVATIONS AND TRENDS
FROM SCHATTDECOR
After Cologne, the German company
Schattdecor Schattdecor will showcase
also at Sicam Pordenone the latest
trending topics in the world of furniture,
with many new decoratives
and innovations in digital printing.
Schattdecor (www.schattdecor.it),
headquarter in Thansau, Germany and Italian seat based in
Rosate (Milan) is satisfied with its
results for 2012. Sales increased
to approx. €480 million, while the
workforce rose to almost 1,400 employees at eleven production facilities worldwide.
The company also performed
well in the first quarter 2013. The
figures are equal to or higher
than those for the same period in
the previous year in all product areas. The sales trend in the individual world regions bodes well for
the rest of the year.
The major trend for the 2013/14 furniture season is
decors with natural authenticity. Another very up-todate theme remains the perfect combination of tactile and optical elements through synchronous structures and decor-enhancing surface effects on
melamine and film surfaces.
66 XYLON INTERNATIONAL September-October 2013
Rooms once again express their character. Exceptional inspirations and personal desires provide the living space with an individual touch. The
new interiors reveal greater influence of creativity, emotion and
personality.
In essence, home furnish is mainly characterised again by a
stronger focus on individual and
modular ways of shaping living
spaces. And as a way of underscoring individuality and creative freedom,
use is being made of strong touches of colour.
The furniture in the “Progress” trend makes a
fascinating impact with bright colours and
modular material combinations. Individual furniture elements provide plenty of scope for singular
solutions. Wooden items are simple, but offer unexpected colour details. Unusual forms and lines, and
daring material mixes give the furniture its unmistakable look. Intensive colours are used for accents,
yet are never overdone or too garish. Light shades
of grey and extraordinary contrasts shape style.
This furniture trend is characterized by light Nordic
woods in natural colours and matt surface textures.
Typical exponents of this trend include:
“Tokaj” is a fine-grained decor offering elongated
flame figures, partial rays and attractive colour treatment. Lighter streaks introduce a touch of interest in
the balanced composition.
Rustic oak table-boards provided the inspiration for
“Beaufort Oak” decor. The lively grain in the broad
planking and the large and small knots all contribute
to an extremely natural look.
DIGITAL VISIONS BY SCHATTDECOR
Schattdecor displays its most interesting new developments, and
on its new website at www.digitalvisions-schattdecor.de customers
can now obtain comprehensive information about all former and
new digital print decors.
Fascinating design possibilities for use in shop design, trade show
booths and distinctive interior
decoration can be seen at
the website in the form of
over 120 digital-print decors.
With its two decors “Giant
Wood” and “Paint Splatter”, the company has repeatedly been honoured for
its creative ideas with the
prestigious international Arena Design Award.
“Poetry” trend is characterised by individual furniture items that take their cue from the Scandinavian
country house style. Simplicity and longevity are the
fundamental criteria in a look that can best be described as “Poetry coupled with modernity”.
Nevertheless, the furniture never makes an austere
impression, but captivates with an air of casual chic.
At the same time, it also creates contrasts of light and
heavy. A modern effect is created by combinations
of white-stained items with various pastel hues for a
dream-like touch.
The wood surfaces are primarily an encounter with
white and grey stained wood; these panel woodgrains
have a used look which embody character and
longevity.
The colours principally include white and a broad
palette of pastels, including rosé and mineral pigments
with black as an accent. The following decors well
represent this trend: “Bonifacio Oak” and “Sibiu
Larch”.
The living ambience is determined by masculine
colours, as well as solid-looking furniture accentuated
with metals such as copper, brass and steel.
Classic items and new, modern designer furniture are
combined with each other. Concrete surfaces are particularly in evidence in the interiors.
Reddish timbers in particular make a daring appearance with vintage surfaces. This trend is typified by heat-treated wood and dark oak. It also includes:
Developed in line with the trend for using concrete
in interior design, “Loft” decor shows fair-faced concrete in a somewhat structured layout featuring many
of the details typical of the material. Created for various applications, it is suitable for worktops, wall surfaces and furniture elements alike.
Thanks to its arresting 3D look, “Sheffield Oak”
makes a powerful visual impact, with striking negative pores in the growth lines and narrow figures further contributing to this effect. The decor is particularly attractive in dark colours.
Indigo, teal, cinnamon, graphite and subtle concrete
grey are the colour schemes of this furniture trend.
With its new second “Unique Colours” by
Schattdecor collection, the company is presenting
a range of new highly current trend colours in line with
the latest trend themes, and which are perfectly
matched with the new modern wood decors.
Another new collection will be displayed: the
“Smartfoil CP+”. Crystal-clear printed decors (Crystal Print) offer a more natural appeal. A plus for more
naturalness – in short, the added value that
Schattdecor offers its customers with this
unique collection. ■

POLLMEIER
3C
LAMINATE BEECH VENEER LUMBER
BENT PLYWOOD PRODUCTS
The new laminated beech veneer lumber will be exhibited by
Pollmeier (www.pollmeier.com) at Made expo in Milan, from 25 October, together with several studies on the application of this
new material that will attract customers and visitors’ curiosity. This
innovative product for the construction industry will be available
starting from January 2014.
Laminated veneer lumber, also called “Lvl”, consists of veneers
bonded together and placed in longitudinal direction compared
to the beam axis. “The high resistance of beech is fully leveraged
with our layered
beams. Bending
resistance is three
times higher than
standard fir veneers”, said Ralf
Pollmeier. “Laminated beech veneer lumber offers
brand new opportunities to architects. Wider spans could be covered with original architectural
solutions, designs made of thin wooden frames could be implemented with state-of-the-art technique. In this way we can seriously compete with steel and concrete leveraging a sustainable
raw material such as wood. But also in the flooring, stair and furniture industries we can see interesting applications".
The Pollmeier group employs about 600 people and manages
– in the facilities based in Creuzburg and Aschaffenburg – two
of the biggest hardwood sawmills in Europe. Pollmeier sawmills
are specializing in the processing of European beech coming
from German sustainable forestry economies. Pollmeier beech
is exported in more than 70 countries all over the world. With
the introduction of the new production plant for laminated veneer lumber “LvL”, Pollmeier has entered a new market. ■

FANTONI GROUP
ZETAGÌ
CONTINUOUS RESEARCH…
"HOLZFREUND" COATING, LONG LIVE
One of the main features of the Fantoni Group
(www.fantoni.it) is its ability to keep pace with the
times. The panel "Isb” is a perfect demonstration
as the product , designed and developed by Fantoni Research Centre, perfectly suited to the needs
of the construction market recovery. The high level
of expertise has allowed us to develop a product
whose main qualities, strength and light weight make
it an ideal candidate to be more
than just an alternative in the construction world.
"Isb" is a wood
product extremely
versatile and can
be used both in
the construction
standards as well
flooring, roof panels and interior design. Its main features make it one of the most versatile, durable and
environmentally efficient panels available on the market. The attractive appearance of natural wood reveals the strength and endurance of this panel. Tests
have shown an incredible strength to tensile resistance, torsion and compression, but what most impresses is the adaptability of "Isb". The strength of
the panel is that the screws and nails firmly hold even
in the outer areas, ensuring stability and durability.
But "Isb" panel offers even more : it lends itself easily to the sizing and coating, allows a very fast and
efficient installation for its lightness and above all, allows the construction in wetlands.
The panel “Is” is made for structural use in humid environment, which is distinguished at first sight for the
look pleasantly smooth , but shows immediately for
his technical skills. Insulation board certified Ce and
Fsc, is suitable for several uses in the building, also
in combination with other materials. It is also fire retardant and moisture-resistant , rugged and durable,
available in a wide range of thicknesses. Interesting
the exposure of a wall cross-section of a house built
by Stratex with this panel. ■
"Holzfreund" is a product brand by Zetagi (www.zetagi.it) that encompasses a wide range of intermediate, primers and outdoor top coats, with high technological content, for the processing of windows,
doors and other outdoor wooden elements.
The high quality standards of "Holzfreund" waterbased coatings are certified by their compliance to
Catas requirements for multiple cycles.
Insulating coats are water-based one-component
products for flow-coating processes, formulated with
modified acrylic resins, recommended as insulating
base coats for exotic or tough wood, as they create
a barrier against the action of substances contained
in wood, with a filming process.
Clear water-based one-component base coats for
outdoors are created with acrylic water-soluble oilmodified resins suitable for window pre-treatment,
as they build up a base that, following the finishing
operation, creates a consistent film.
A wide range of clear or pigmented water-based
primers is available. Their formula with special resins
makes them suitable for windows of exotic wood or
rich in tannin. "Holzfreund"
primers exceed the En 152
standard, provided they are applied according to the conditions fixed by the standard itself.
There is a wide range of
"Holzfreund" one-component
water-based clear or slightly
pigmented top coats, suitable
for different types of wood.
Their formulas are based on
acrylic resins and feature high
resistance to weather agents,
Uv rays and bleaching.
The technical features of
"Holzfreund" coatings ensure
high film surface hardness and high elasticity even
at low temperature. Such features, combined with excellent water resistance, deliver highly consistent filming even in critical conditions such as edges, sharp
corners and joints. With high resistance to blocking,
highly transparent and solid dry film, and superior
verticality, these coatings are particularly suitable for
any application, especially industrial operations, doors
and windows. ■

Natural, processed and
blanched structures and
sand-blasted looks provide
the whole topic with the perfect framework.
“E.Novation”
is oriented on
technologydominated living environments, in which
the natural is
virtually indistinguishable
from the artificial. Its range of colours is

For next year, 2014, in occasion of its fifty years of
activity − spent pursuing quality and innovation in the
market of the furniture industry − EffegiBrevetti
(www.effegibrevetti.com) proposes “Infinito”, the revolutionary modular system for the movement of coplanar sliding doors.
This system allows designers to be free from constraints and limits dictated by the mechanics required
to move inline doors.
It will be possible to create chest of drawers at sight,
shelves, storage or anything else inside compositions
of furniture with coplanar doors.
The problem of doors up to the ceiling for niche furniture will be solved, since 4 mm of gap will be
enough; furthermore it will be possible to keep the
doors at 17mm of distance from the ground.
For this year, in the meantime, the company has enlarged the “Ghost” family of invisible hardware with
two new versions: “Monoghost”, shelf support with
single dowel with high holding power and “Ghost
20”, versatile and multifunctional shelf support.
Furthermore, as from January 2013, with a view to
continuous development and quality improvement,
EffegiBrevetti has obtained the Iso 9001 certification
and has enhanced its “customer service” to improve
and refine, in addition to its products, the relationship of trust and cooperation with its customers. ■

INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS
BY BOSCH REXROTH
Bosch Rexroth (www.boschrexroth.it) is one of the
world’s leading specialists in the field of drive and control technologies. Bosch Rexroth is an industrial automation partner for mobile and machinery applications as well as renewable energies. It develops,
produces and sells components and systems in more
than 80 countries.
Last May, during Sps/Ipc/Drives Italia, the company
presented a brand new solution, “Open Core Engineering”, a completely integrated platform that combines Plc and It automation and provides developers with a greater degree of freedom in software engineering. OEMs can flexibly access the control core

el languages. This allows them to deploy customized
solutions independently and more easily, and at a lower cost than before.
During the Hannover Exhibition, “Open Core Engineering” was honored with the international “Hermes
Awards 2013”, which represents one of the most desired industrial awards at global level.
“Open Core Engineering” brings the requirements
from previously separated engineering worlds together
in one integrated solution. At its core are software tools
and function toolkits that build entirely on open standards and technologies. The new “Open Core Interface” enhances the software engineering – which
until now has been focused on PLC automation – enabling it to work with applications based on high-level languages. With numerous function libraries which
are adapted to different development environments
it is now possible to have functions directly access
the control core.
Specific examples are the integration of simulation
tools or the use of smart devices with native apps.
“Open Core Interface” makes it possible to integrate
production machine functions and data out of IT-based
applications such as management execution systems.
The standardized, cost-effective realization of
functional safety is increasingly important for
OEMs. To simplify the development of complex machines, Rexroth is integrating safety technology into
the “Sercos” automation network. The “Cip Safety on Sercos” safety protocol ensures safe communication from the control unit to the drive without any additional wiring.
Energy saving, operating costs minimization, noise
level reduction, high machine availability: all this can
be obtained thanks to “Sytronix”, the new offer of
combined hydraulic and electric drives by Bosch
Rexroth.
Quick response time for greater precision in measurement and greater dynamics: the new “IndraControl S20” real time I/O system by Rexroth
meets these requirement and, through Sercos
bus, simplifies peripheral connections.
Lowered compressed air consumption is endured
through “Aes”, the new electronic control for
“Av03” valve system, which connects the pneumatics to all common industrial controls via fieldbus and Ethernet.
Variable speed control for electronic drives is a main
factor for increasing energy efficiency in machine engineering. With the newly developed “Efc 3600” variable frequency drive series, Bosch Rexroth offers the
economic benefits for general automation, material
handling and pumps, fans and compressors, which
had up to now been operated continuously and inefficiently.
The “Efc 3600” variable frequency drive is a completely new design by Bosch Rexroth that complements the existing product portfolio including the “Fe”
and “Fv” frequency converters as well as the highly dynamic “IndraDrive” platform. The “Efc 3600” improves the process control through integrated Pid controller as well as through a system to define a customized speed profile.
The settings enable an energy efficient operation
of equipment and machines at their optimal operating point. Due to its high intermittent overload capacity of up to 200 percent as well as the high initial torque of up to 150 percent, the “Efc 3600” can
be used for a wide range of applications with the
most varying requirements. The freely scalable V/f
characteristic allows load-dependent adjustment
of the voltage/frequency curve, which ensures a
longer motor service life.
The “Efc 3600” can be connected to other automation topologies via optional Modbus or Profibus field-

bus interfaces or via digital and analog inputs and
outputs. In the first roll-out, the “Efc 3600” will be offered covering the performance spectrum from 400
W to 4 kW. Due to the integrated brake choppers and
mains filters, additional peripheral devices are not required. The converter complies with the Emc directives for industrial applications. The simple program
structure and easy parameter input provide for
quick commissioning and start-up without the need
for a PC. Harmonized parameters apply to all converters of the series. Via the removable control panel with memory and copy function, the user can quickly configure several electronic frequency converters.
This also reduces integration- and downtime in
case of system expansion or in case of replacement.
The service technician would simply use the control
panel and copy the existing parameters to the new
device. Due to its compact design which is complemented by the plug-able I/O terminals and optimized cooling concept, a gapless side-by-side and
space-saving installation is possible. For devices up
to 0.75 kW, fans are not required and subsequently
are supplied fan-free. Devices with performance level 1.5kW and higher are supplied with integrated fans
that can be easily accessed without requiring tools.
The “Efc 3600” complements Rexroth’s frequency
converter series “Fe” and “Fv”, which cover the performance spectrum up to 160 kW. ■

THE VACUUM PUMP
PUTS THE BRAKES ON COSTS
A brake on maintenance and energy costs: using innovative components for
the construction of numerical control woodworking machinery helps increase
business competitiveness.
The Busch headquarters in Maulburg (Germany).
“Mink” pumps
for the
wood industry...
Providing woodworking machine manufacturers with
high flexibility in component application is the first
target achieved. The second one is cutting energy costs and the expense to preserve equipment
efficiency over time.
This is the business focus of Group Busch, a German multinational corporation with fifty years of history, headquartered in Maulburg (Germany), with an
Italian branch in Nova Milanese (Monza Brianza)
hosting thirty employees, a 4-thousand-square-meter factory with warehouse and mechanical workshop.
Busch has 2,300 employees approximately and 56
companies in 39 countries; the group specialize in
the production of vacuum pumps and systems,
blowers and compressors, used all around the world
in several industries, including wood.
74 XYLON INTERNATIONAL September-October 2013
Vacuum technology is extensively used in woodworking for pneumatic conveyors, parts handling
and lifting, veneer heat-forming, chip drying and
removal, and all locking/clamping applications on
numerical control machines.
Busch pumps, blowers and vacuum systems are
used worldwide also in turning, sanding, finishing
and handling equipment, forming and laminating
presses.
The Busch brand includes the “Mink” series of
vacuum pumps based non-contacting claw technology, recently launched on the Italian market:
adding to traditional oil-lubricated vane pumps
(“R5”) and oil-free/dry vane pumps (“Seco”), the
new “Mink” series is establishing itself as an application standard among most numerical control
machinery manufacturers, as it offers great performance in terms of efficiency, durability and energy saving.
Applications include loading and clamping operations on working centers, handling and transport
of semifinished and finished products, vacuum drying of sawn wood and impregnation under vacuum. The series includes 50 to 500 cubic meter/h
vacuum pumps, with end pressure up to 20 hPa
(mbar) in the two-stage version, and up to 250 hPa
(mbar) with 500 cubic meter/h suction capacity.

overpressure values with 62 to 500 cubic meter/hour
capacity. To achieve higher suction or volume displacement ratings, the “Mink” vacuum pumps
and compressors can be combined in pre-assembled units, so as to ensure a perfect matching of the vacuum/pressure generator to the required
processes, with suction/volume capacity up to 1,080
cubic meter/hour.
NO CONTACTING PARTS
Complete vacuum systems (consisting of several pumps and other vacuum equipment and accessories, controlled through electric panels and plc’s) sold in Italy are designed and manufactured
at Busch Italia, “tailored” to the requirements of national customers. In
the Italian wood industry, Busch is
planning to launch new sales strategies to strengthen the brand leadership. Luigi Lionetti, general manager at Busch Italia, says: “In 2011,

percent compared to 2010. In Italy,
we want to replicate the same growth rates. Busch Italia has established solid business relations with the leading Italian manufacturers of woodworking numerical control machinery, they have
adopted our “Mink” systems and we are now approaching also

“Low environmental impact – Lionetti adds – and cost cutting
can help open up new opportunities in the Smb segment, also with
targeted investments including communications. “Although small
and medium companies in Italy seem less sensitive to eco-sustainability issues than their European competitors, awareness on
energy saving and maintenance is still strong”.
The “Mink” series features dry-running non-contacting technology, ensuring constant pump performance and suction capacity over time. Two rotors run in synch in opposite direction inside the
pump body with no mechanical contact, supporting air suction and compression to the pump discharge.

RESEARCH
THE “WOOD COMFORT”
PROJECT
Why does the presence of
wood contribute to make a living space more comfortable?
A team of researchers of the
University of Padua is answering this question with the
implementation of the project
“Wood comfort: the analysis
of comfort generated by
wood as construction and
furniture material”.
The goal of the research program is double: understanding why wood is considered
as a pleasant material and
promoting its use against other competitive materials. Indeed, as to the construction
and furniture industry, besides playing an important
environmental role for it is a
deposit of carbon – accumulated during the development
of the tree – and being appreciated for its technological
features, wood also ensures
other features that can generate a sense of pleasure
and comfort while dealing
with items or environments
made of this material.
Environmental comfort reflects
the psychophysical wellness
of people that live in an environment (house, office). It is a
feeling that depends on specific environmental conditions
(temperature, moisture, brightness, materials, etc.) that can
be mostly measurable and,
thus, they are included in the
designer’s responsibilities.
In order to get a
definition of comfort
based on objective
considerations, it is
necessary to approach the problem
from a psychophysical point of view,
by defining, for example, what are the
physical features
that can be perceived from an item
or an environment
that generate pleasant feelings.
This is exactly the goal of
“Wood Comfort”: defining
what are the physical features that make wood the preferred material against other
competitor materials and evaluating the comfort level in an
environment where wood material is predominant; this definition will be possible through
the implementation of objective/quantitative measures of
the parameters that might influence the choice of a material against another one and of
psychophysical scaling tests
carried out to understand the
kind of relationship between a
specific physical feature and
the pleasure that it generates. The study will try to understand how the main aesthetical elements of wood,
such as color or design, can
influence the choice expressed by a group of people.
78 XYLON INTERNATIONAL September-October 2013
In the specializing press for
the architecture and interior
decoration industry, it is frequent to find articles or advertisements claiming that the
presence of a ceiling with the
beams showing, wooden flooring or finishing contributes to
increase the value of a home
or an environment for the
sense of well-being generated by wood.
The trump of this project is the
multidisciplinary approach
that characterizes the research
team: technical know-how
on materials will be combined
with psychological evaluation
so as to define, quantify and
express – through the results
of statistical analysis – which
physical parameters and/or
social or cognitive aspects influence the choice of users.
The results of the project will
be advertised at national and
international level to promote
wood, a material with which
we have been sharing our
lives for thousand years.
The duration of the project is
24 months and it is expected
to start in September 2013.

PALLET, A SYMBOL
OF ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
Created over seventy years
ago, wooden pallets do not
only continue to play an undisputed leading role in the logistics industry, but they can
also enter private houses and
become comfortable and
charming furniture items at the
end of their life cycle. Indeed,
TV shows are increasingly
using them for “special” settings, interior designers use
them for trendy houses, websites explain how to leverage
them at best to obtain flexible
product design items. Pallet –
thanks to the recycle philosophy and an industrial style increasingly appreciated by
designers and consumers –
seems to be a topical element. From the specific domain of goods handling indeed, it is now expanding into
areas that are far from its
“vocational” use.
We are talking about wooden
pallets, which today still count
on undisputed leadership in
the logistics industry (accounting for 90 percent, overcoming the plastics segment)
and – among their many benefits – feature an environmental impact five times lower than plastics, as certified by
a recent study carried out by
Politecnico di Milano commissioned by Conlegno, a
consortium that deals with
the management and promotion of high-quality brands
aiming to promote the culture
of wood at national and inter-
national level. Well, throughout
its lifecycle, an Epal pallet (the
most widespread standard
pallet) reduces the quantity of
CO2 in the atmosphere by a
total of 18.4 kg. It is not mere
chance that – although research and technology
progress always propose synthetic materials that can be applied to all production segments – pallets continue to be
produced with
wood still today.
Since its introduction, the pallet was
the subject of regulatory processes
that defined the
standardization of
sizes as well as
the safety from the
point of view of
plant health, forest and environment: the international brand
FitOk was then introduced,
setting a kind of ID card of pallets to support the traceability of plants with severe and
constant controls.
Since 2002, the Italian reference for the management of
these two main technical
brands (together with other
certifications) is Conlegno,
the service Consortium of
wood and cork (www.conlegno.eu), a particularly proactive institution for the promotion and protection of high
quality brands, control and
standard compliance, legal
protection and development of
initiative to protect the environment.
A multiple activity that – besides promoting the use of
pallets and wood – is also
aimed at protecting the
forestry heritage (the protection of certified wood-based
objects and materials, indeed,
cannot be implemented without constant control over forest areas) and developing a
real environmental sustainability culture that characterizes the green economy as
one of the most real and pragmatic growth areas for the future industry. ■

WOOD, MACHINES AND FURNITURE:
INTERNATIONAL COMPETITORS
observatory
In this article we illustrate the export figures referred to the January-June
2013 period for machinery, wood and
furniture, by those countries identified
as major competitors worldwide.
Export trend of woodworking machinery, over the period, shows a
negative trend: both Italy and Germany
confirm difficulties of a global economic deficit.
Wood and semi-finished products
(logs, sawnwood and panels) show
positive flows for North American exporters, while Russia is stable compared to 2012.
The trend in furniture industry shows
ever more the consolidation of China in
the role of world leader, increasing
every year the gap with its main competitors. Italy is confirmed to be the first
European exporter for wooden furniture
with over 2 billion Euros in the first half
of 2013. ■

stocks. Fixed investments increased
by 4.1 percent pushed by the residential factor. Import increase (+ 5.4
percent) was higher than export increase (+2.9%), generating a sales
deficit. Public expenditure decreased
by 4.1 percent, after a reduction of 7
percent in the fourth quarter of 2012.
In April, employment increased by
165,000 units (+ 176,000 in the private
sector, -11,000 in public administration). The unemployment rate was reduced at 7.5 percent. As to the inflation, the consumer price index increased by 1.5 percent (April 2012 March 2013).
As to economic perspectives for
2013-17, the real growth of Gdp is estimated at 2.3 percent in 2012. Despite
the unknown elements relating to the
fiscal balance and the debt limits,
growth Gdp rates of 2.1 percent are
expected in 2013 and 2.3-2.4 percent
in the four years 2014-17. The economic growth in the forecast period will
be guided by the increase of private
consumption, and by a significant high
growth of investments, mainly in the
sector of private construction. ■
