De-industrialisation, re-industrialisation, new industrial policy: they all reveal the same concern for maintaining an industrial base in our region, essential for our future growth. We know France’s weak points: a lack of specialisation by sector, lagging exports, and tenuous ties with the world of research and higher education, which in turn leads to a lack of innovation… all in a world economy where increasingly competitive products from South Korea, China and Brazil are attractive to European consumers. The Lyon region has been able to preserve its industrial base by playing the specialisation card (life sciences and chemistry), facilitating links between industry and research (from the creation of lnsavalor and Ezus in the late 1980s to the business clusters based in the area) and promoting the advantages of its location. Three recent examples demonstrate this industrial dynamism and we invite you to find out about them in this issue of the newsletter. Aderly has supported the concretisation of these three projects in the Lyon region, confirming that the death of industry predicted by the doomsters is not inevitable. Industry is a priority for both the new Lyon CCI chairman Philippe Grillot and Aderly. Lyon’s industrial dimension is a real competitive advantage in its competition with other European cities! Jacques de Chilly, Executive Director ADERLY AUTUMN 2011 ] INVEST IN [LYON By Aderly Y] S [STOR S E N I S BU The Lyon region stimulates industry The Lyon region would look very different today if it had not benefitted from the presence and development of numerous industries. The industrial sector is an historic marker of the Lyon area, recognised for the diversity of its business portfolio and business fabric, robust with its large number of small and medium industries, the establishment of large French and foreign groups and young companies in strong development. Although Lyon has asser ted itself in a number of scientific and technological sectors, the city remains an industrial capital of the highest order in Europe. Even today, 44.4% of jobs are in industry and industrial services compared with 40.8% on average in France. This is a position it intends to strengthen to promote its advantages in this sector and anchor its developments, in par ticular in the food processing sector, but also that of the chemical industries for which Lyon presents real advantages that set it apar t, as well as all the industries that can benefit from the region’s excellence in ecotechnologies. With a trained workforce and ability to ser ve the entire European market, the Lyon region is favourable to the development of new industrial units. Fur thermore, Lyon is a city with a highly balanced economy and a ver y diverse offer : the sector-based as well as the regional and real estate offer, which extends to its well-ser ved surrounding areas (Beaujolais, east of Lyon, airpor t, etc). Thus every project can be executed easily and find the conditions it needs to boom, benefitting from the proximity of a dynamic European city at the heart of the European market. ZOOM This is why, like Aderly and the Lyon Chamber of Commerce and Industr y, the city’s economic players expect in the coming years to strengthen support for industrial projects to which Lyon could be home (see inset below). The CCI commits to industry Within the framework of the company round table talks organised in 2011 by the Lyon Chamber of Commerce and Industr y, Philippe Grillot (Chairman of the Lyon Chamber of Commerce and Industr y) has launched the 2011/2015 Roadmap, which presents the CCI’s five commitments and five priorities. One of these priorities is as follows: «Reassert the area’s industrial vocation». Thus the Lyon CCI, a major economic player in the area, is strongly committed to acting to consolidate the industrial base, the main source of innovation, expor t growth and development of ser vice businesses. Its ambition is notably to expand industrial SMEs internationally by increasing the exchange of experience, coordinating networks and financing the acceleration in growth with innovation and sustainable development as second nature, but above all by developing an area equipped for industrial development. Consult the «Roadmap» at www.lyon.cci.fr [2] ] INVEST IN [LYON By Aderly AUTUMN 2011 Three new investments in the area: MAPEI, BOSCH and FRESENIUS MEDICAL CARE Yet more proof of Lyon’s attractiveness to the industrial sector, three new major investments have recently been made in the region. Over 200 jobs will be dedicated to this new photovoltaic business on the Vénissieux site. «This investment secures the business and jobs on this production site» said Guy Maugis, President of Bosch France. MAPEI, the world’s leading producer of adhesives and chemical products for construction, will inaugurate a new production plant, its third in France, at the hear t of the Plaine de l’Ain industrial park in Saint-Vulbas in the first half of 2012. This 12,000m² new generation plant will be equipped with an ultra-innovative «powder» manufacturing process with a production capacity of 45T an hour. Comprising a depot and production, quality control, logistics and maintenance depar tments, it will be fully operational in the second half of 2012 and will be one of the MAPEI group’s most modern plants. The group’s objective is to always be as close as possible to its customers, to be more reactive and to be available. It currently has two plants in France, one near Toulouse and the other near Paris. For logistics and procurement reasons, we wanted to locate to the Lyon basin to cover the West of France more effectively. Fur thermore, «Extending our capacity is an impor tant step in our ambition of becoming one of the main suppliers of photovoltaic solutions. Thanks to this production site in France, we are as close as possible to our clients in France and Southern Europe», explains Holger von Hebel, President of the Solar Energy business. In addition to diesel pumps for the automotive industr y, the Lyon–Vénissieux site produces hydraulic components for construction machiner y. These two businesses, along with the production of photovoltaic modules, should be placed under the same coordination. In total, the Bosch group currently employs 1,200 staff at Vénissieux. FRESENIUS MEDICAL CARE SMAD, a German company specialising in dialysis products based near L’Arbresle, will set up a new dialysis machine production line at its site. This major investment of €20M will enable it to double its current dialysis machine production capacity which is around 14 million units per year. In total, this new production line will occupy over 1,000m² and employ around fifty people to operate twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. This comes in addition to an initial investment validated by the group in March 2011 for a production line for concentrates for dialysis which is currently being installed. In total, over a period of two years, the German group would have invested over 30 million Euros in France. To suppor t its growth, Fresenius Medical Care SMAD will recruit between 80 and 100 people by 2013, strengthening its existing team of 400 people at L’Arbresle. © Amsycom BOSCH, a technology and services company, has decided to develop par t of its Lyon-Vénissieux site, its only facility in France and its second largest in the world after Erfur t (Germany), developing a production unit for cutting edge photovoltaic panels. T he production lines will reach a peak capacity of 150 Megawatts. Bosch is investing almost 50 million Euros in this new business. Star t of production is planned for Januar y 2012. Here are a few examples. ISO INGENIERIE: STRATEGIC LOCALISATION TO THE LYON REGION per month. Recognised for its expertise, in January Mediastay became the first French advertising company to be accredited by Facebook. A company offering technical advice and exper tise to industr y, Iso Ingénierie already has over 20 years experience at the ser vice of its clients. With a team of 30 engineers, the company had turnover of 2M€ in 2010. Having experienced regular growth until then, it is now preparing for an acceleration phase. «We are aiming for turnover of 2.5 million Euros by the end of 2011 and our development plan envisages doubling our staff by 2013», explains its director, Rober t Chardon. In response to its strong development, in July 2011 the company chose to open a new technical centre in Lyon and recruit around ten IT developers. And the company doesn’t intend to stop there as it has the objective of expanding this team to around 20 people within 18 months. The choice of Lyon to open this new technical centre resulted in par ticular from the aspirations of two of Mediastay’s Paris employees who wanted to move to the Lyon region. Organised around three skill areas (project performance; instrumentation and control and dependability; and health, safety and environment), last May Iso Ingénierie chose to open a sales office in Lyon, with 5 staff (to rise to 10) in the hear t of the Par t-Dieu business district. The company is already working with clients in the region such as Rhodia, Novapex, Clemessy, Sanofi Pasteur and Arkema. Iso Ingénierie is also part of the APPEL company network which brings together ecocompanies in the Rhône-Alpes region. According to Mediastay founder Eric Bennephtali: «Like other professions in the IT sector, the activity of technical developer can be decentralised. And it is often the colleagues themselves that request this as leaving the Paris region can represent an improvement in their quality of life». www.mediastay.com www.iso-ingenierie.com MEDIASTAY OPENS A TECHNICAL CENTRE IN LYON Founded in 2000, Mediastay is one of Europe’s leading players in on-line gaming audience monetisation via performance advertising. Created in 2000 and based in Paris, the company had turnover in excess of €17M in 2010 and has over 70 employees split between Paris, Brussels and San Francisco. The company publishes over 12 proprietar y brands (Kingoloto, Bananalotto, Yacado.com, etc.) in the field of casual gaming, which combined have over 25 million members in 14 countries and 7 million unique visitors DEAM BASES ITS HEAD OFFICE IN THE LYON REGION Deam, an innovative young company, has been developing innovative Human-Machine Interfaces (HMI), lighting and displays since 2003. Deam’s first innovative development, baptised Liteface, is a new, flexible and dynamic display technology (see picture opposite). It has had successful test phases in several industrial sectors such as the automobile market, home appliances and even the aerospace industr y. New products with Liteface built in will be launched on various markets [4] ] INVEST IN [LYON By Aderly AUTUMN 2011 from 2012. Previously based in Nîmes, in 2011 the company decided to relocate its head office to Chassieu, near Lyon. It benefitted from Aderly’s suppor t in searching for offices suitable to its business and putting it into contact with local businesses. It also concerns the purification of emissions captured by filters before discharging the air into the atmosphere in compliance with environmental standards, the aspiration of ground dust from base stations and transfer to storage, the industrial transpor t of solids by air flow from one point to another and even facility audits and follow-ups. The company is already well integrated in the area as it has been a member of the Lyon Urban Truck&Bus competitiveness cluster for a number of years. In September 2011, Nexair opened a sales agency in the Lyon region at Saint Quentin Fallavier. The idea of locating to the Rhône-Alpes region was influenced in par ticular by the local presence of an experienced manager who wished to remain in Lyon and had previously held an identical position for a group in the Nor th of France which has now ceased trading. Nexair wants to recruit a new staff member by the end of 2011 or early 2012. www.nexair.fr THE OPULENT GROUP CHOOSES LYON One of the key criteria in its relocation was the proximity of Lyon-Saint Exupér y airpor t. Company CEO David Luo explains that Lyon was chosen for the dynamism of its industrial activity in important sectors such as automotive and lighting. Deam has also entered into contact with the Aerospace and Lumière (Lighting) clusters. In June 2011, the Opulent group chose to open a sales office in Lyon. Opulent is a group specialising in the design and manufacture of PCBs (Printed Circuit Boards). Boasting over 25 years experience in industrial manufacturing, Opulent has an international presence with offices in the United States, Europe and Asia. Fur thermore, the company was attracted by the city of Lyon due to its direct proximity with Germany, which is a key market, as well as its potential for development which will enable it to establish new par tnerships and new synergies with local business. Opulent has benefitted from Aderly’s ser vices with setting up, in par ticular in the search for an accommodation solution in a business centre and suppor t in administrative procedures. www.deam.biz NEXAIR LOCATES TO THE LYON REGION Nexair is a company specialising in ventilation engineering and installations, industrial dust removal, centralised cleaning, pneumatic transport and smoke treatment. In other words, its business relates to the cleaning of working environments through aspiration via installations (hoods, duct networks, ventilators, etc.) that capture volatile pollutant emissions (dust, smoke, etc.) primarily of industrial origin. [5] Opulent’s mission is to be a one-stop shop, providing solutions up to the finished product. The company notably offers a complete range of reliable heat solutions using LED lighting. This technology is recognised as an effective energy solution in all sectors and in par ticular in the automotive and electrical industries. The intellectual proper ty rights and patents held on its products bear witness to Opulent’s commitment to innovation and development. http://www.opulent-group.com S ]ITIATIVE [IN N O LY A flight simulator platform at Lyon-Saint Exupéry The start of September saw the official inauguration of the Air Campus flight simulator centre located at the heart of Lyon-Saint Exupéry airport. Basing the Air Campus centre on the Lyon-Saint Exupéry airport site itself facilitates the development of an international client base. The Air Campus aeronautics training centre was established by CFA Rhône-Alpes Auvergne as part of the «Airparc Lyon-Saint Exupéry» tertiary park project. To meet the needs of airlines and flying schools, four complementary businesses primarily aimed at flight personnel will be brought together on the same site: a flight simulator centre (Air Campus Sumuflight Center), a medical centre (Air Campus Medical Air Center), a training academy for pilots and flight attendants (Air Campus Academy) and a residential hotel and restaurant to accommodate the interns (Air Campus Inn). This new tertiary real estate park located at the airport’s south entrance in a 60,000m² landscaped park enriches the European-scale tertiary business cluster which Aéroports de Lyon wishes to develop. Airparc brings together 11,000m² dedicated to the Air Campus aeronautics training centre and 18,500m² comprising tertiary and mixed (offices and businesses) real estate. CFA Rhône-Alpes Auvergne will launch the construction of the first 1,750m² tertiary building to be leased in December 2011 for a handover in December 2012. The Air Campus operations team comprises qualified professionals guaranteeing the technical and commercial success of the centre. In the long term, over 80 direct jobs will be created on the Lyon-Saint Exupéry site thanks to the future development of complementary projects (instructors, medical personnel, office staff and hotel staff).
