EDITORIAL
These are exciting times for international drama as the
demand for channel-defining content of the highest quality
escalates. At STUDIOCANAL we are delighted to have
brand new and exceptional drama series available at
MIPCOM. Series with universal appeal: authentic, relevant
and most importantly, intriguing.
Authentic and relevant because, as well as being great
stories created by leading writers, with high production
values and amazing performances by well-known talent,
they deal with real issues that face us all in today’s
turbulent world. The global war on terror; the value of the
environment versus the lure of money; the professional
and personal dilemmas faced by our law providers; the
insatiable demands of the media and the importance of love
and friendship.
Intriguing simply because they are genuinely unique and
fresh. Each one set in a very different part of the world with
interesting characters and dynamic plots that will captivate
viewers’ interest and have them enthralled from the opening
titles until the very end.
We are delighted to showcase MIDNIGHT SUN from
leading creators Mårlind & Stein (Bron/Broen). A high
concept thriller set in a small mining community in remote
northern Sweden where a series of brutal murders – which
contrast starkly against the beauty of the landscape and the
ethereal daylight – conceal a secret conspiracy. MIDNIGHT
SUN stars French actress Leïla Bekhti (The Prophet) and
Gustaf Hammarsten (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo), and
is produced by Atlantique Productions and Nice Drama for
CANAL+ and SVT.
BAFTA award-winners Søren Sveistrup (The Killing) and
Adam Price (Borgen) join forces with Meta Louise Foldager
Sørensen (A Royal Affair) on a tense, nerve-racking crime
thriller for Denmark’s Kanal 5 – BELOW THE SURFACE. In a
subway train beneath Copenhagen, fifteen innocent people
are taken hostage by three masked, armed men. A terror
taskforce is dispatched to rescue them. As a media frenzy
ensues, the country finds itself divided on whether or not to
negotiate with the terrorists. Over the course of eight days,
growing fear and desperation grip Denmark while those
trapped underground lose all hope for survival.
Produced by RED Production Company, PARANOID stars
Indira Varma (Game of Thrones), Robert Glenister (Hustle),
Neil Stuke (Doctor Foster), Lesley Sharp (Scott & Bailey) and
Kevin Doyle (Downton Abbey). The drama series for ITV and
Netflix opens with a seemingly straightforward small-town
murder investigation quickly turning in an ever-darkening
mystery on a European scale. Written by acclaimed writer
and producer Bill Gallagher (The Paradise), the series’ head
director is Mark Tonderai (The Five).
CRAZYHEAD is a bold new comedy horror series from
BAFTA award-winning creator of Misfits, Howard Overman.
The six-part series is produced by Urban Myth Films for
Channel 4 in association with Netflix. Filled with dark
humour and unexpected twists, CRAZYHEAD is a funny,
gripping, action-packed series about friendship, love and
facing your demons, that follows the angst and exorcisms of
an unlikely duo of demon hunters, played by Cara Theobold
(Downton Abbey) and Susan Wokoma (Chewing Gum).
STUDIOCANAL is very proud of its reputation as the
creator and supporter of award-winning drama. We now
have seven production companies within our group with the
remit to develop and deliver series that are wide-reaching
and bold. This, coupled with our strong relationships with
third party producers, means we have a constant flow of
extraordinary content to offer our clients.
And, as the growing appetite for drama continues
throughout the globe and across multiple platforms,
we’re excited to unveil our new programming in Cannes –
we know you’ll be as intrigued as we are!
