ADMINISTRATION OFFICE
The first phase of the Club’s renovations began 26
May with work beginning in the Sports & Recreation
building to prepare for our Administration Office to
move to its new location on the fourth floor. The
Admin team moved to its new office space at the end
of July and is getting settled nicely.
The additional space in the main clubhouse vacated
by the Admin Office has now been freed for Member
use. This space will be converted into our Chinese
Restaurant, which will commence construction in
early August and run until the end of the year. We
will also begin renovations to our function rooms in
September, which will last until the end of October.

We ask that Members use Club towels to

First Aid Training
The Club has 50 staff certified in first aid including
CPR and Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
Every alternate year our First Aiders attend a
re-certification course on Occupational First Aid,
which covers first aid, CPR, AED, and work safety.
Beside the bi-annual certification course, the
Security Manager also conducts an annual CPR
and AED practice session for first aiders ensuring
that they are ready to react to emergencies.
You can identify the first aiders among our
staff by the red cross badges pinned to their
uniforms. Emergency response procedures are
also in place with the security and maintenance
departments as the key personnel to lead. To
date, the Club has a total of 20 first aid boxes at
various locations around the Club and Heads of
Department are tasked to conduct first aid box
audits on a quarterly basis to ensure all essential
items are replenished.
Food Safety Training
The Club engaged a food consultancy company
to conduct food safety training for our kitchen
brigade. So far 45 staff have attended the training
where they learn in depth technical food safety
information required for food operations. The
training will help us maintain a high level of food
safety in the products we produce.
Cooking Demonstration by Chef Louis
The staff had the opportunity to learn two of
Executive Chef Louis’s personal recipes. These
simple to whip up yet delicious dishes—Porridge

the selection of our Star Employees. Previously only
Heads of Department could select candidates for
this monthly initiative where staff who display an
exemplary attitude towards work and colleagues are
recognised. Now we accept nominations from all staff.
Each month, two candidates will be recognised—one
from back of house, the other front of house. These

17 September, Churchill Room, 7.30pm

Travis Lemm came to wine via food. His career began in his hometown of Adelaide, where he was the Assistant
Manager of fine dining restaurant Grange Jetty, before going on to manage To Relish in Hyde Park. Food
and wine pairing was the bridge that would deliver him to winemaking, never to look back. While completing
his Bachelor of Agricultural Science (Oenology) degree at the University of Adelaide, Travis worked parttime in the Adelaide Hills. Travis started off selling wine at Shaw + Smith through their innovative tutored
wine tastings; before working as a cellar hand at Normans. Having fallen for Voyager Estate’s wines during
his restaurant days, Travis travelled to Western Australia in the hope of securing a position with a leading
Chardonnay producer.
A week after his final exam in 2004, Travis started at Voyager Estate as Asistant
Winemaker under the tutelage of then-Chief Winemaker, Cliff Royle. Within five years, he’d worked his way
to Winery Manager, and couldn’t be more excited about what lies ahead for the winery.

CHOIR COMMITTEE OF 2015: Patricia Hancock-Teoh, Jocelyne Hill, Sybil Schwencke
The Tanglin Club Choir takes pleasure in introducing it’s
first official three member Choir Committee for 2015.
Patricia Hancock-Teoh......Choir Section Leader
Patricia who is better known as Tricia to all, is a practising
Dental Surgeon in Singapore. Hers is a familiar face to
members as she has served on the Events Committee for
more than 8 years and has been Master of Ceremonies for
many major events in the Club. Tricia’s responsibilities will
centre around liaison with the General Committee, Events
Committees, Club Management and promoting membership
of the Choir to newcomers of the club.
Jocelyne Hill....Choir Administrator
Jocelyne has been involved with the Tanglin Club since
2012 after her move to Singapore in 2011. She comes to
us equipped with a Bachelor of Commerce (NZ), a Graduate
Diploma in Arts Management (NZ) and with an LTCL (Flute).
With these qualifications Jocelyne held the position as
Accountant for the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra in
the early 2000’s. This, coupled with her involvement in a
number of committees with a variety of schools and music
groups over the years has provided her with a broad base
of experience to offer to the Choir Committee and it’s
members. As a member of the Committee, Jocelyne will
provide the administrative structure and communication
within the group.
Sybil Schwencke.....Choir / Public Relations
Sybil is no newcomer to the field of Marketing and Public
Relations. She was the Public Relations Manager for Rollei,
a German Camera Company during their startup venture
in Singapore from 1970 to 1973. She then switched to
marketing and was tasked with the responsibility of taking
34
charge of the then little known family owned American
Cosmetic Brand, Estee Lauder. During her 17 year tenure
(1973-1990) with Estee Lauder, she was responsible for
building up the image and sales volume of the Brand for
the Singapore and Malaysian Markets. Today, Estee Lauder
is one of the top prestigious, luxury Cosmetic brands
worldwide. Sybil’s objective in her choir role is to improve
visibility of the Tanglin Club Choir.
All three ladies have one thing in common - their love for
singing. Together they will strive towards a well run section
of the Club, the artistic progress of the Choir, promoting a
sense of community for it’s members and making singing
an enjoyable experience for everyone involved. Please feel
free to talk to any of these friendly ladies when you meet
them in the Club and let them encourage you to join the
Choir one Wednesday evening for a different type of Club
recreation!

CROSS-TRAINING IN THE GYM
Cross-training
is
a
technique
that
involves
using
different types of exercise to provide variety, train for
sports, and/or reduce the risk of repetitive injuries.
Do not think fitness means mastering a single sport or
activity. You could be a power lifter and able to bench
press twice your bodyweight but when you try to climb
a flight of stairs, you almost feel that you are out of
breath. Or you jog three times a week without fail but
when you try to bend down to pick up something, you
pull your back and hamstrings, which lasts for weeks.
If you gravitate towards certain activities, like running
or the elliptical trainer, it’s a great idea to cross-train
with different activities. Not only do you use your
muscles in a different way, which is refreshing for your
body, you also keep your mind engaged. Using just one
set of muscles repeatedly can also increase your risk of
repetitive injury. The harder you train your body for just
one activity, the more stress you put on all the muscles
and bones involved in that one activity, so the more you
do, and the better you get, the more you risk overuse,
and the greater your risk of injury.
Some tips for cross-training:
• Change your impact. If you usually do no-impact
exercises like stationary cycling or swimming, try
running for a change to add a little impact to your
workouts.
• Another way to cross-train is to incorporate exercises
that are completely different than what you’re doing.
If you’re a hard-core lifter, try a little more cardio now
and then. Doing something new can get you out of a rut.
• Martial art, Muay Thai for example, is another great

for the Kinabalu Bowls Tournament and some of our
members participated but other better teams won.
We also hosted a practice session for a company group
from a Tanglin Club Member. It was a good opportunity
to initiate the game to the wider public in order to
popularize our lawn bowls. It was a great evening of
fun and sociable gathering as one of them declared “I

FUN-FILLED YEAR OF DIVING AND DIVE ACTIVITIES
Scuba Section Members convened in June at the section’s Annual General Meeting to reflect upon yet another
fun-filled year of diving and dive related activities. Some notable moments included Michael Flecker’s fascinating
talk on marine archaeology, and assorted trips to the Bahamas, Japan, and the Philippines.
Reports by the conveyor and the treasurer showed the section to be in good health both socially and financially,
and as the meeting drew to a close, all that stood between hungry divers and a sumptuous meal was the small
matter of voting in a new committee; this was swiftly done just in time for everyone to start tucking in.

SQUASH SECTION ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
The Squash AGM was held on Friday, 12 June, and
was
very
well
attended.
The
Squash
Committee
Members presented a summary of the past year, which
encompassed many of the activities the Squash Section
has been involved with. These ranged from the squash
referee’s clinic held by Munir Shah to a visit by Ong
Beng Hee, the Malaysian number 1 squash player who
gave us an amazing demonstration of his squash skills.
Peter Von Selkey with Lood Van Rooyen
All of the inter club tournaments got mentioned, which
are too numerous to list here, as well as the big doubles
tournaments—the 16th International Jumbo Doubles
tournament held in January this year and the Singapore
Closed Jumbo Doubles tournament held at the end of
February. The Squash Section would also like to express
great thanks to all of our sponsors, especially Daryl
Arnold as our main sponsor for the International Jumbo
Doubles and Graham Dare as our main sponsor for the
Singapore Closed Doubles Tournaments.
From left to right: Alan Jones, Darcy McColl, Paul Gelardi and Graham Dare
There were also a few awards given in the following categories:
1. Most Improved Singles Squash Player went to Thomas
Bouvagnet
2. Most Improved Doubles Squash Player went to Puneet
Chadha
3. Most Improved Singles Player went to Sean Le Mesurier
4. Squash Personality of the Year went to Peter Von Selkey
There were also a few humorous awards given out,
which were the “Tin Bashing” award given to Rishaal
Jadoo, and the Referees Clinic Award (for better lets
and strokes) was presented to Shane Hagan in Satyen
Desai’s absence.
All in all a very good night was had by all with a good
general overall feeling that the Squash Section had a busy
but very enjoyable year. The new Squash Committee
was formed without a vote as the squash convenor has
decided to stay on, which raises certain questions about
the state of his mind. The new committee is:
SQUASH BIRTHDAY BASH
The Squash Section held their quarterly birthday bash
on Saturday, 27 June. We were celebrating birthdays
for Puneet Chadha, Steve Wright, Jeffrey Beh, and
Rasik Ahuja. The day started with a very good turnout
of Squash Members both in singles and doubles. The
celebrations got started around 17.30 with a few beers
and a sumptuous Northern Curry buffet. Along with
celebrating the birthday boys, on more somber note we
all had to say good-bye to Rishaal Jadoo who has been
a great Squash Member and player who will be sorely
missed, with the exception of the court maintenance
personnel who won’t have to fill up so many holes in
the wall and repairs to the tin given Rishaal’s quite
aggressive hitting of the ball. We presented Rishaal with
a Tanglin shield wishing him well for his future life in the
US; he is welcome back to the club at any time.
Many thanks Rishaal, we will all miss you.

LEE KUAN YEW: THE MAN AND HIS IDEAS
by Han Fook Kwang, Warren Fernandez, and Sumiko Tan
Lee Kuan Yew passed away on 23 March 2015 at the age of 92. This book, which was first
published in 1998, tells the story of his life from when the Japanese occupied Singapore in 1941
until 1998 when he was Senior Minister.
Based on thirteen exclusive interviews held over thirty hours, this book chronicles the events,
people, and political fortunes that were to shape Lee’s view of the world, as well as the path he
set for the transformation of Singapore. It delves into the choices he made, the political turnings
he took, the insights gained, and lessons learnt, some of which were expounded to the authors
for the first time, with wit, wisdom, candour, and vivid recollection.
Written by three leading journalists from The Straits Times, this book features photographs from
the family’s private collection.

The film’s plot centers on rival lion dance
troupes in Singapore—a liberal-looking faction
of a traditional troupe, Tiger Crane, breaks
away from it to form a new one called Storm
Riders, which advocates a new style of lion
dance with more modern influences of hip hop
dance and more flashy acrobatics.
The Lion Men: Ultimate Showdown picks up
after Mikey (Wang Weiliang)’s and Babyface
(Maxi Lim)’s superb performance in the first
round of the competition. Shi Shen becomes
jealous of Mikey, especially after he discovers
Mikey’s feelings for Xiao Yu.
The film opens with the Republic of Singapore
apparently being under an immense invasion
from a fictional army, with iconic Singaporean
landmarks coming under fire and many civilians
killed brutally.

When a chance to save his ailing diner goes belly up, Onassis Hernandez, an émigré and single-father living in affluent Singapore, is pushed over the
edge. He takes a motley group of citizens hostage in a designer bungalow and publicises his act on Youtube. As the police and international media
descend on the crime scene and riots break out in in the city, an increasingly desperate Onassis forces the situation to a violent, heart-stopping
conclusion.
Meet writer and director Ken Kwek
after the film! Ken graduated
from
Cambridge
University

a

assistant and journalist before
turning into film making in 2008.
His writing credits include The

Great World (2011), and Trafficker (2013). He made his

The film won
accolades overseas but was banned in Singapore and
Malaysia for its racial and sexual content. Ken’s first
feature UNLUCKY PLAZA premiered at the 2014 Toronto
